10 Countries with the Fewest Atheists. (Some real shockers)

- Today we are talking about countries with the smallest portion of the population that claim to be atheists. If you don’t know what atheism is, it can simply be explained as a person who doesn’t believe in God or some other higher power. There are several flavors of atheism that I’m not going to get into, we are just broad brushing with people that don’t believe in the big man upstairs.
In the video where we looked at countries with the most Athiest, I said there will be people in the comment section talking about the different types of Atheists and how I just can’t label them all as atheists. I was right, they showed up.
That being said this time I will go a step further and include the numbers for convinced Atheists and none religious people.

I've known no Thai people, but Filipino immigrants have a huge presence in the city where I live. I believe what you are saying. Buddhist idolatry is disgusting
and degrading. Roman Catholics ought to know better, because the Bible forbids use of idolatrous images in worship. Catholics have access to the Truth, but the Vatican has done much to hide it, or twist it out of shape.

Having religion is different from being religious.
Quite easy to measure having religion, but it would find difficulties when one to measure religiosity (being religious).
Agreed, for instance both Poland and Spain are fervently Catholic countries, but such fervor is differently expressed, and is seen/experienced differently by outside observers.
@@hd-xc2lz Yea right, you still have religion but not religious. There is definitely a scale.
Talk is cheap. Someone can be a professing Christian, yet not know and love the Lord or His word.
Matthew 15:8 - This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.
That's true. In religions where monasticism is common, number of vocations could be a decent metric, but some religions (e.g. Protestantism, the various traditional Chinese religions described as "Confucianism") take Han Yu's stand that monasticism is wasteful and antisocial, so you couldn't use this metric everywhere. Church attendance could be a good metric, but there are a few religions that don't really have an equivalent of the Sunday Obligation (e.g. Buddhism). Overall, I would say the ideal metric is how religion changes peoples lives, and by that metric, some nations that we don't think of as that religious (e.g. Japan) may actually be highly religious.
Thank you for mentioning my country which is Romania 🙏🏽😊🇷🇴

Everyone in the Vatican (there are only around 800) are Catholic and have a major role in the Church.
The population is 1000 and all of em are Christians
But it's not a real country nobody except a handful of largely male clerics live there -most people come from other countries and are temporary inhabitants-nobody rears families there. If you go back about 150 years then it was a kind of real country that occupied about one third of Italy and the pope ruled as a king(in other words a theocracy)Italian revolutionaries confined the pope to a very small area when they took over Rome in 1870 and Mussolini signed a concordat(peace treaty) with the pope that gave the Vatican recognition of its tiny area no bigger than a small park! That was in 1920 and later the United Nations recognized as a country -the only religion that is also a sovereign state.

Edit: another commenter pointed out that the city Briggs showed while talking about Ghana is not even in Africa at all. It is Gold Coast, Brisbane, Australia (so no telling what he shows is correct or not). The former British colonial name of Ghana used to be Gold Coast, so that must be the source of Briggs' confusion.

I'm not even surprised to see Philippines in this list. As a non-religious person, it makes me sad when people automatically assume that you're a bad person just because you don't believe in religion. It's kinda sad. I once got into an argument with my father just because I told him I don't really believe in his religion. And mind you, I said it nicely. He got so mad and accused me of being an evil person who's influenced by the devil. When I told him, I want to move out and live on my own as I don't feel close emotional bonds with the family, he blames it on the devil. Seriously, I tried my best to get close to them and open up to them emotionally but they always shut me down. They even used religion as an form of manipulation to make me blindly do as they say. My mom even said you should help people even when they are being horrible to you.
I've also seen so many people get into petty arguments due to religion. In this country, there are many forms of christianity and they often argue amongst themselves on which one is right or wrong.
I often had to hide that I'm non-religious to avoid being judged.
Girl, I fully understand you and support you, I also really don't believe in religion and it's total shit made to control people, but the people can't realise it and also some says that if you don't belive in religion you don't believe in God, but it's completely wrong. My parents even took me to some stupid witch and they were like that I'm influenced by the devil and that like some saints are going to "save" me from him. And what you mention that they are arguing about religion or whatever, it's because even they don't know in what to believe and what they want. Be yourself and don't take anything personally what the speak to you because they are really brainless, not you, you just refuse to believe in bullshit. I'm really glad I read this and I wish you everything best in your live, greatings ❤️
And also I have the same problems as to when it comes to parents, always when I'm trying to open emotionally to them, they don't care and always use it against me, but I'm above to move out but we will see how will it go.
I'm also Filipino and I got my religious trauma from catholism I hate religion so much

You said that Romania was kind of, or halfway, in the Balkans. Well, I lived in Romania for two years, and have spent a lot of time there, and all Romanians consider their country to be totally in the Balkans - so much so, that they have social habits and customs that they commonly refer to as "Balkanisms".
As a romanian I would say its a lot more complicated. The concept of 'balkanism' is somewhat more nuanced. Ie its usually used as self deprecation with some overtly bigoted connotations.Personally I would consider Romania in a transition zone between the Balkans and Central Europe. We romanians use it in jest to imply we're not as developed as the more 'enghlitened' central europeans as opposed to the 'barbaric' peoples of the Balkans. Trust me there is a strong element of bigotry and xenophobia to our 'balkanism' concept. We actually hate it when we say 'we're in the Balkans' because we imply 'we're just like those 'illiterate savages/corrupt criminals/muslims''. We don't actually want to be part of it and honestly geographically we're not. We're really not except for the Dobrogea region. But its a self deprecation with some very disturbing connotations of far right extremism. I don't know if you noticed it but 90% of us romanians are highly bigoted towards anyone who is not us.

Maybe YOU hate that we are a Balkan country (in terms of history and culture, not geography), but I am proud of it. Only those who worship the West hate the Balkans.
Having met and spoken with Buddhists, I know that some adherents practise it as a religion, and others only as a philosophy for living. One devout Buddhist told me his whole family followed Buddhism as strongly as himself, but he (and they) had no belief in any supernatural power. In the context of this video, I think it is important to discriminate between the spiritual and atheistic forms of Buddhism.
Buddhists count in fact under Atheists.
Either way, both are considered religious.
I was thinking of this regarding Buddhism and Taoism as well. Depending on the forms of Buddhism and Taoism, they can be considered atheist/nontheist. So I wonder if they're included in the data.
Buddhism is widely regarded as an atheistic religion. Buddhist scriptures either do not promote or actively reject the existence of a creator god, the existence of "lesser" gods who are the source of morality and that humans owe any duties to any gods. At the same time, though, these scriptures accept the existence of supernatural beings which might be described as gods. Some Buddhists today believe in the existence of such beings and are theists. Others dismiss these beings and are atheists. Since there is nothing about Buddhism which requires a belief in gods, atheism in Buddhism is easy to maintain.
Buddhism simply based on mind, its dominating thoughts & consequences of that for the present & for the future.
Though there are basically 4 Hells & 6 Heavens [ total with subdivisions 33 ], one inevitably would reach a one after life according to one's dominating thoughts in the present life, no creator for any of that, all as a result of Natural causes. But Buddhism mainly geared for how not to reach any of that 33 worlds.
I don't see Buddhism as a successful religion/ Philosophy because of its pessimistic theories though the principles of mind almost parallel with modern psychology.

In the Philippines, announcing one's atheism could lead to exclusion from some social circles that could affect quality of life. Best to keep it to oneself. I am an atheist and have witnessed the drifting away of family and acquaintances who found me out. Some job applications even ask about religious preference or affiliation and your answer may spell rejection if you're not "the right kind."
they drift away from you because of your personality that's all! don't blame them because you just want to be "pa cool" and finding job? they will reject you because you're an atheist, tell that to the marines!
That's not really exclusive experience for Atheist only, it's happened usually when one's leaves or differed from the usual majority leanings of acceptance, for example, most of my friends that's subscribe into Iglesia ni Cristo are somehow being departed by their usual Devout Catholic Parents where they usually Catholic Families for Generations. It also somehow similar to experience of Former Christians turned Muslims, or the other way around, Plus if you're a Biblical Christian Believer, there's verses in the Bible where Believers will tend to be isolated when they leave their parents/familes home to follow Christ by carrying his cross.
By the way, As a Subscribe Christian who doesn't aligned with the any established Denominations or Sects, but only through Following the Bible, is somehow have some values of Atheist, Humanist and Agnostics. The only problem that I observed on the so-called Official Atheist is their Prescribe Values that pushes the over belief on science and logic, while dismissed the other values and wisdom as Nonsensical and False. Which somehow misplaced Ideology, and In the process turn off people into somehow going into them deeply for much more understanding. Because we know there are things and matters that Science and Logic cannot Easily Comprehend and Understand without going to the Other side of the Spectrum of Knowledge, that is Beyond Science and Logic.
Lmao stay in the closet if you know their reaction will gonna be sour

Well, we got also other countries like saudi Arabia that are like 99% Muslim, and generally many other Islamic states, and then we got the Vatican wich is 100% Christian. Well, really nice list but it's not absolute
Not really. Saudi Arabia only have 92.7% Muslim. But yeah Vatican is 100% Christian
I would be very very surprised if there were 'not' any Atheists in the Vatican, for an organization that is so blatantly corrupt and dysfunctional it seems highly unlikely that 100% of the upper echelons actually believe the BS they spread around the world.
As for Saudi Arabia, there a loads of Atheists, they are just too afraid to come out and admit it. The free Arabic translation of Richard Dawkins' book 'The God Delusion' has been downloaded over 13 Million times.

I would be interested to know from your perspective how the former Communist dictatorship dealt with the question of 'religious observance'.
I understand that the Orthodox church is pre-eminent among the churches in Romania, although just before Ceausescu fell I heard that some of the Hungarian churches in Transylvania were agitating for change.
@@marcusonesimus3400 i really have no idea about that what happens in Transilvania . But the interesting fact is that in the comunist time when was Ceaușescu was forbiden to go to Church . And after fall of comunism , Romanians are going to church and pray . We are a land of believers

That answer is clear enough for me. Thanks. God bless Romania.
More than 3% are atheists. I know some places in Romania where most people won't even flinch near a church. I hope that Romania, Russia, Serbia and Greece are still the most orthodox countries in the world/ Europe.

India, Thailand sees religion the opposite way
Religion in India is intertwined with cultural identity and tradition, so most people tend to say that they r from a particular religion (even if they arnt religious) but overall religion dominates India's politics, culture and history
India is extremely religious. How they express it is a bit different from in the west, but it is too religious for its own good.

Can you do a coorelation between religion versus poverty, violence, and inftrastructure?
Thanks for the video man. The last video on this subject was interesting but kind of depressing too. It's truly sad that there are so many athiests in this world! :(
I thought I was the only one who felt like that
Exactly my thoughts.
So sad that you are so foolish to think that because your god created atheists.
Why should that make you sad?
@@JCT75 I am happy to be an atheist. the sad part is that a lot of theists think it is better that others believe in opposing religions than having none at all.
I thought that the Gold coast was in Australia, not Ghana 7:25
Which rank are the USA in terms of religiosity? I'm surprised the USA aren't part of the list.
As a Romanian I'm actually surprised we made into this top 10, I expected this top to be exclusively made of South American and Arabic countries.
7:16 This skyline is that of city of Gold Coast here in Australia but Briggs shows it as that of Ghana!!! Such a blatant oversight really compromises the trust in the contents of the video. Not to mention, by far the most religious countries in the world would be the Muslim countries, definitely all of the top-10 would be Muslim countries. Hello, bloody Saudi Arabia.
I wasn't sure where it was of!
Thanks for the heads up!
Religious oppression is rampant in Muslim countries, a survey would not be reliable.
I was shocked to see India before pakistan because pakistan is one hell of religious country! Most current generation indians don't believe in god.

Wow I didn’t expect Thailand to be number 1!
Just curious. Where does Poland rank?
I'm astounded that Vatican City and Saudi Arabia didn't make the list. Were they never polled?
Because the video is about countries that have fewest atheists, not the most religious population!
Once I met some missionaries from Spain and they told me that is way more Christians believer in Africa and China than Spain and the neighboring countries. It surprised me because when you think of Spain= Catholic Church but …, the new generations don’t care about traditions or any form of religion. It is sad to hear that for me but that it’s not the subject. Good video
China has 1.3 billion people. Africa has about 700 million, and about half of them are Christian, give or take. Spain and her neighbors have maybe 100 million people. So these missionaries were correct. Go figure.
In india government estimates that the Christian population is only 2% but they are wrong.. i guess it'll be around 30 to 40% of the population... How did i know?? Just like you, I've met dozens of these church workers and it's not just Roman catholic Church (in India the top most educational institutions are run by Christian organization and even world class private Hospitals) there are dozens of different Christians denominations... And guess , which Holidays are the biggest in India?? Diwali and Christmas... It is such a big Deal. The South and Eastern parts of India are all Christian.
@@outbackigloo6489 correction , China's population is 1.4 billion and India's population is 1.3 billion.
@@thisnthat7760 - “Close enough for government work.” My point was that there would be more Christians in China and in Africa than in Spain or her neighboring countries (Portugal, France, Andorra, Gibraltar and possibly Morocco) as China and Africa have far more people. I did not look up the population numbers prior to my post as I had seen them before. If my numbers were off, they weren’t off by much. And, BTW, Fany Sweeny’s original post mentioned Africa, not India.
Still plenty of Christians in South America though due to the Spanish spreading the loving word of god with a sword. I'm glad to hear the youth in Spain realized what a horror show religion is.
6:49 that’s now Ghana… that’s actually Gold Coast here in Australia, I live on the Gold Coast 😂
How authentic are the stats. Are these taken from census stats . Is it based on belief systems of the major religion s. What about those that subscribe to traditional practices.
Good info to learn. About Ghana and West Africa, the fundamental belief system of most is Animism. Not mere beliefs and practices from village life. People's commitment to Islam and Christianity are veneered on top of Animism.
I'm agnostic animism from indonesia
Hey buddy we don't call it Adam's bridge it's Rama Setu . Angkor wat is not in Thailand, it's in Combodia 😑
Bro why were you showing the Gold Coast city for Ghana? That city is the Gold Coast in Australia, I live there btw
interesting video. FYI you missed Malta is 94 percent of respondents identified as Catholic, 3.9 percent as atheist, and 1.3 percent reported belonging to non-Catholic Christian denominations.
2:47 “Columbia” 😂
I always notice it’s the more poorer Countries or states to be most religious, or as least those that feel like a third-world countries
Because atheists worship money that’s why they have the richest countries . Religious people don’t care much about money though .
So true
Not true at all. Romania is not poor, we are religious because in the communism era religion was forbidden. But our parents and our grand parents took care to educate us in the spirit of believing in God. I would not say that we are religious, we don't go every day to the church, I would say that we are spiritual, we believe in God.

My home country the United States of America has the most Christians than any other country in the world even though it's slowly losing Christianity.
Nope. The Rural States of America has the most "White SUPREMACISTS" than any other country in the world. (They're just impostors who call themselves "Christians" to gain the support of other guilt-ridden White Supremacists/White Nationalists like Donald Trump, who "hides behind" a Christian Bible that he does not even read.)
They're losing religion in general due to education
