- The Indian Air Force's Leh base, the challenge from the China and Pakistan two-front threat, protecting India's borders from Chinese aggression and preserving Tibet's Buddhism from Chinese repression is the subject of this documentary. In 'The Himalayan Frontier' Part VII here's a look at Shakti & Shanti (Power & Peace) in Ladakh. We record a day in the life of the Indian Air Force's Air Warriors at the Air Force Station (AFS), Leh in Ladakh which is at the frontline of dealing with the China and Pakistan two-front threat. Continuing our series, a StratNews Global team of Amitabh P. Revi, Rohit Pandita and Karan Marwaha document the IAF Mig-29, Sukhoi-MKI and Rafale fighter jets, the C-17 Globemaster, Il-76 and An-32 transport aircraft and the Cheetals of the 'Siachen Pioneers' 114 Helicopter Unit in their operations at, to and from the Indian Air Force's AFS, Leh. India has ramped up its military posture along the Northern borders after the deadly 2020 Galwan clashes with China's People's Liberation Army (PLA) forces. And the Indian Air Force's AFS Leh plays a significant role.
'The Himalayan Frontier' Part VII
In this episode, we film the Indian Air Force's Mig-29, Su-MKI and Rafale fighter jets, the C-17, Il-76 and An-32 transport aircraft, the IAF and Indian Army Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) Dhruv & Rudra and sorties conducted by the Cheetal helicopters, speak to the Air Officer Commanding (AOC), the Commanding Officer (CO) of the 114 Helicopter Unit (HU), Mig-29 and Cheetal pilots and the Engineering Officer, 114 HU to document the Indian Air Force's operations in the northern Himalayan frontier along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China in Eastern and Southern Ladakh and China-occupied Tibet, and in the Siachen Glacier as well as along the Line of Control (LoC) and the Actual Ground Position Line (AGPL) with Pakistan. We also visit the Thiksey Gompa or Monastery modelled on the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet. Priceless Buddhist religious literature, documents, and thangkas at the Gompa have been smuggled out of Tibet to preserve them from Chinese repression.

I had been to NEFA then (now Arunachala Pradesh), at Chaku that was the last point the PLA had come upto. In the thick forest around there were many tomb stones erected for our fallen soldiers (Shaheed). Most of them or may be all were from Madras regiment.

Thanks to SNG, Amitabh Revi and the camera crew, for this amazing presentation of the Leh airfield set in mountainous landscape, and the overview of Air Force operations handled there. But this airfield is well more than just a military base, as this video shows.
The visit to the Tibetan Buddhist monastery painted in red, yellow and white and its library of scrolls and 'tangkhas,' as well as the stupa were also fascinating and unique. The life-size cut-out of His Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama, inside the monastery attests to its significance as a hub of Tibetan Buddhist culture.
Wonderful to meet some crew members of the choppers that are the lifeline for troops deployed in the Siachen glacier and its environs! The azure skies, as well as the opening and closing shots of the sliver-moon in the twilight, with the silhouette of a flying crane, and then an airborne chopper, against this backdrop, certainly added an artistic touch to the video!

As a business owner and an Indian I'd be keen to invest in this area if the govt. can come up with an investment strategy for civilians. Just developing army installations will become very costly without developing the tourism potential. Dual use infra development should be the goal

It's an understatement to call Sqn 114 personnel brave. And the same applies to the people from Sqn 21 and Sqn 3 (Operating Mig-21 Bis) also. In fact I would call these people crazy/insanely brave to be flying these relic machines in such extreme terrains. The air force keeps talking about the agility and robustness of Chetah and Mig-21 whenever an accident happens to justify their continued use but I am pretty sure everyone wants to see these machines decomissioned asap. Air force certainly demands a lot and these people deserve all the respect, appreciation and credit for this. Jai hind.
