- Today we're asking Billy Billingham, an ex member of the SAS Special Forces to react to a selection of tactical shooters games, virtual special forces operations as well as tactics in games like Battlefield 3 or Ghost Recon.
Mark “Billy” Billingham served in the British SAS for over 20 years, has been responsible for planning and executing strategic operations across the world, is a certified counter terrorism instructor, has led countless hostage rescues, as well as much more.
Previously he worked as an A-list bodyguard for Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, and now acts as Chief Instructor on hit show SAS: Who Dares Wins as well as putting celebrities through gruelling challenges in Fox TV's Special Forces: World's Toughest Test.
But what does he think of Rainbow Six: Siege's SAS members Sledge and Mute? How realistic are the weapons of Escape from Tarkov and the battles of Squad? What does he make of the tactics of Ready or not?
00:00 Intro
00:41 Rainbow Six: Siege - SAS Operators
04:07 The Regiment - Iranian Embassy
07:27 Escape From Tarkov - Weapon handling, behind enemy lines + more
13:15 Ghost Recon: Breakpoint - Sync shot sniping and action
15:52 Squad - British troops & battlefield simulation
18:40 Ready or Not - Breaching tactics, door breaching and using gas
22:51 Battlefield 3 - Sniper Mission

love how much respect every expert has for tarkov.
Is it respect? Or just an acknowledgment of the accuracy of the games models?
@@Yung_potentate tomato tomato
Tarkov is very watchable but a nightmare to play if you actually have a life.
If only BSG was only a competent dev. Great game but man how they handle cheaters, content release, etc is abysmal.
@@rundown132 They're a very competent game dev but not a competent anti-cheat dev. I'd guess Tarkov is at a point where they're mainly just milking the game now because of top level greed. Same's happened with Activision.
This man is so perfect for this. He’s well spoken and speaks in a positive but serious manner. Very professional.
Cant agree more, so well thought out in the way he's positive. A lot of these guys that have been there just mock the games, but he seems to point out why it is realistic first and then why it isn't.
@@oliveradams1555Ive noticed this in Jonathan Fergusson's vids on YT too - they're happy to gibe leniences based on the obvious game restrictions. Its much more critical of what's there than what isnt
He was a paratrooper then served 17 years in the SAS. Not many better than him.
Yes i agree. No joke
Most SAS members or ex members speak similar, it's part of their training and how they operate. They don't mess about, very direct. In all aspects including how they communicate.
Billy should really be reacting to Karmakut gameplay for "Ready or Not" and other similar games. They have full squads with organised tactics and comms. Would be cool to see him critique that.
Yea depending on who you watch a few of these games can look a lot better but the majority of people don’t play the game like the mil-sim crowd
@@helpumuch6887Good point, it would only work with Billy if the person playing had experience with the game and played it like an operation.
Or GLID
Agreeeeed
This is how me and my boys play. We go for gas? Whole teams goes in with gas masks. We go sneaky? Nocto + silencers + mirror at every single door. We have shield? Entry goes C4/ram + flash + guy with the shield as entryman.
i love how disgusted he sounds when he mentions the SA80 at the start. brilliant video
British too
😂 Thought he was going to tear into it more
@@Prometheus7272 you could tell he was holding back lol
The moment I saw it, I knew something was going to be said 😂😂
I love my country, but not the people running it. The SA80 still being our primary service rifle is just one of many reasons.
Ooooh a moment where i actually know different as a qualified rock climbing instructor, forward abseiling is rather easier than he realises these days, technology has actually moved on since he was an active member of the forces, we now have self tending belay devices that can be operated 1 handed and automatically hold the line if you let go, so shooting would be entirely possible.
Can't blame him for that though as they only became available on the market in the last 10 years or so and he cannot be expected to be up to date with the lateat climbing apparatus.
interesting
I noticed that too. Siege's devs trained with real climbers to ensure they had authentic rappelling back before they decided they didn't want their game to be tactical anymore. There's some BTS footage of them doing the same maneuvers
Gri-gris have been around for a while. I will say that a forward rappel takes a whole lot more practice to perfect than a standard rappel, especially from higher heights as the weight of the rope itself can cause issues. Had a friend try to set up a forward rappel on a 30m climb and he was fighting his rope for the first half of the rappel.
Possible but how effective can you shoot? Quicker and easier to just to backwards
I imagine he'd never see it anyway unless he bought it himself. British Army always use outdated kit cause they're too cheap to properly equip their troops.
Feels like he's so hyped about Tarkov, he's ready to end the session and download the game right away 😂 that was really cool. Can't blame him, the games looks awesome.
He cannot know it from footage only but if he played it or was told how the guns behave in Tarkov he would puke bc Tarkov has the worst gun mechanics out of all FPS. Yeah it is detailed but Tarkov guns punishes tapping or bursting. The recoil is ridiculous for tapping nowhere near realistic. also the elite soldiers are quickly exhausted when holding their guns. He would hate Tarkov
@@ReuterLIs how being a scav in the game any different to playing bear or the usa guys?
@@flowerpower003 playing scav is different. It has no risks, people sprint around or just chill. It has a long cooldown though, so you cannot only play scavs
@@ReuterL I meant more so gunplay the recoil and such but that’s a shame it’s got a long cool down.
@@ReuterL I wouldn't say it has the worst gunplay, its just, very unique and occasionally annoying.
Would be great to see him look into Tarkov some more, look at more of guns, attachments and other elements like NODs and IR flashlights and lasers. Maybe some of the ridiculous weapon modding like the 100 round magazine on the M4A1 and fitting 8 flashlights to the firearm.
He was definitely digging Tarkov the most out of them all. He liked Squad's atmosphere, but he was duly into in the Tarkov content.
This ^
unfortunately that would require the gamespot journalists to be able to play tarkov
@@ravynbunny7193 all of their footage they use seems to be offline raids, so this wouldnt be a problem
@@peepoclap9479you have to grind that stuff to unlock it and if they play SPT BSG will stike the video.
What I love about “Billy” is he can both check the realism and appreciate shock and awe entertainment value
Love to see him look at some Arma ops, maybe some more Tarkov squad tactics, squad, give him doing samples of great tactical games that show more than just the one person since I'm sure he'd tell you: your best bet for survival is another gun on your side
Arma is so simultaneously awesome and frustrating!
"None of this automatic nonsense" Ha Haha.... ha...... no one tell him the Tarkov meta.
I respect his opinion he's been in the thick of it and gives his honest thoughts about what he has experienced with the scenarios shown but he also understands the entertainment factor and in the end it's a game he's not a hardass about everything
If he ever sees this, the mask that the first guy from Siege was wearing, was a mask that has cheek filters. The filters are inserted from inside the mask, so they don't have any outside visible ones, except the relief valves
And the reason to wear a mask is that he is destroying walls which means there could be asbest and other dangerous chemicals.
One thing he missed chatting about that we learned later in basic training was that if you're up against an adversary that is commonly using the same ammunition as you (pretty rare, in reality), it's always worth nicking their magazines and keeping them as a last resort if you run low on your own supply, the important factor being LAST RESORT, as you cannot guarantee that your enemy's ammo is going to be as reliable as your own, but if you're certain that the man you're pilfering from hasn't needed to move through a body of water or been standing in torrential rain for hours before engaging you, then you're about 80% sure his ammo is no more unreliable than your own... Having an extra 40-60 rounds of ammunition that you've nicked from dead bodies never goes astray... This advice can be completely ignored in any part of the African or South American continent, as their handling of weapon supplies is well-known as being sub-par, and it's just not worth picking up and lugging around 3-4kg worth of ammo that may prove to be full of jams...
The Regiment part unlocked some memories! It was my first tactical shooter before I was even into tactical shooters. Didn't know what I was doing either back in the days.
This guy is very professional. He should make a book and start a tour.
You can see 3 of his books in the background, plus dates for his tour at the start of this video 😂
@@RBoh its a joke
That Eric Cantona comment just shows Billy is truly a peoples man 😂👏🏼
Billy's reaction videoes are my favorite gaming content on YT, he respects and totally gets into the source video despite not being a gamer and in the same time educate you on how a real life operation would go. Very charismatic and well articulated man, love to see more of him, thanks GS.
Billy is a legend, I've listened to his book "The Hard Way" as an audiobook and wow, he's incredible, and to see him helping make content in something I'm interested in (video gaming) is just really heartwarming. He really is an inspiration.
Sorry kinda fanboying a bit but yeah I just have major respect for the man.
The Suppressive Fire tips were brilliant, as expected of an expert. The whole Tarkov analysis was great, in fact.
I laughed at the SA80’s rep being so bad as to deserve such a firm "definitely not used"
It’s a decent weapon now by all accounts
@@eddiel7635 It's usable, but way too heavy for a 5.56. The claims of accuracy were obtained through dubious tests with dubious definitions (all they really showed was practical accuracy was improved with a scoped rifle over iron sights)
Wonder if Billy does consulting for video games? He has great understanding and breakdown and unlike some he seems to be able to highlight positives without slandering game elements. I bet he has so much knowledge that could be so useful and he could provide some 'inspiration' for missions/operations. Great video. The coordinated snipers was very interesting, would have thought that was more fantasy.
'The coordinated snipers was very interesting, would have thought that was more fantasy.' Actually a common tactic. I seen a video from Afghanistan where regular British infantry, not SAS, had spotted a Taliban patrol, and that was how the officer ordered his men to engage. Snipers and guys with the marksmen rifles pick targets first and once they open fire, everyone else can freely engage.
As a player of tarkov, and already played battlefield 3 and others, i just love how impressed people get on tarkov LOL
im a multi year Tarkov player. i have military and ec mil friends that cant play it cause the bullet snaps are super realistic. thanks for the PROS view on these shooters
its also amazing that you can see that the people that do the gameplay go out of their way to showcase all the stuff you can do, instead of just popping up some wacky highlights
I'd be curious about his take on SOCOM, Operation Flashpoint, World in Conflict (though that is an RTS) and then for a laugh just throw in some mgsv: thephantom pain as a giant curveball - like water pistol action, cardboard box disguises, whatever.
Good stuff! Always fun to see their takes on Tarkov!
He’s the real deal
This guy had a real nice vibe, hope you guys get to have him on again someday! :)
This is the best expert review video I've seen for tactical fps games. The gameplay demos could be better for some, but the variety of games and the input from the expert were excellent
Love, Billy. I’d love to see more videos
Amazing job Billy, nice to see someone who has been there and done it give credit to games that have tried to be as authentic as games will allow. Super cool to see 🤙
always great watching Billy reacting to these things.
love these reactions from Billy keep em coming GameSpot!
please ask him to take a look at 6 days in Fallujah
This guy is from sas who dares wins! great guy!
I love these videos so much! No matter who the expert talking is, keep them coming!
5:34 He's looking over the aperture sights, not through it. That means the gun is canted up quite a bit. Beyond 5 metres you would shoot much too high.
5:35 Scopes are zeroed at distances between 25 and 100m (usually). Since the the scope is mounted about 5-7cm above the barrel that means on shorter distances the bullet travels below your sight of aim. In this case you would have put a hole in the hostages arm for sure.
This dude is a legend. Love how he can just take everything and measure it up against real world experience and give us the rundown. Awesome 😎
Would be cool if Billy did full review on Escape from Tarkov, with weapons customizations etc.
I’d enjoy watching him react to a game called Ground Branch since it really focuses on some details other games miss
I've watched all of his vids so far.
The most consistent remark is they never go full auto. They want controlled, accurate bursts. I think I'll play that way from now on just to get more immersive.
this dude is so uplifting and encouraging.
Absolutely love this guy. More of him!
I wonder what squad does to sample their weaponry audio
As a firearm enthusiast myself I can say it he the most authentic audio of any game I’ve ever heard
I don’t have a gaming pc so have never played it but can just tell from the videos. And for me as someone who knows what real military weapons sound like this massively boosts the realism
My question though is what do they do to get that audio I mean I’m sure most games from AAA studios sample real weapons like you can tell they are real guns but something about the sampling process doesn’t translate
With rounds are fired there is this like after sound almost like an echo but not as well as echos too depending on your surroundings and they just nail it in squad so I wonder what they actually do process wise to get such good samples
It's pretty awesome to see games inspired by the SAS' work and to have it come back around in front of an SAS badass. CT is very inspiring work.
Now I wonder what Mr. Billy would think about Splinter Cell series, 'cuz I love his analysis
This guy is awesome. I luv his input 🔥 The real deal 💯
Should’ve shown him running 30 feet then being winded in tarkov. Bet he would’ve had a word to say about that
This man is awesome! He gets to live out our gameplay experiences irl, what a chad!
This guy is really entertaining to watch. He know the limitations for games, but you can tell that he knows what he is talking about.
Love these videos with billy
I love these. Billy is perfect for this
We are privileged to hear a soldier of Billingham's caliber critique these games.
the looting in Tarkov justs make me imagine SAS just henry hovering the enemies after they finished an engagement.
An honourable mention of the King Cantona 👍🏻
When billy says it’s realistic developers must be like oh yeah. Listening to him is so good because many of the things are sense of course but you don’t think of some of them and when he says it in like oh yeah of course. To think what he and his fellow soldiers have actually really been through and faced. When they are getting shot at there’s no start game again option, I genuinely can’t begin to get my mind round it
Thank you for putting John McAleese in. It's nice to know what Billy thinks about the legend 😁
Would love to see Billy on Rainbow Six Rogue Spear actually planning the missions. Would be great to see how successful his approach would be when executed.
1:05 I mean it's actually interesting. Like he said they'd never have the Union Cross on their Uniforms, but for the Lore in R6 it does make a lot of sense, with there being multiple ppl from different countries. It just makes it easier to see who is from where
This man is the difference between having a bodycount and having a bodycount.
Loved the appreciation for tarkov!
What I like about games with malfunctions is that you get that feeling of "The loudest sound in the world is a 'click' when you want a 'bang' and a 'bang' when you want a 'click'"
his reaction to the tarkov shotgun makes me feel he has tried doing the setup quest haha - excellent game
This guy is the real deal, remember tho bring him again please.
Mans, I played The Regiment so much back in the day. Best tutorial to this day
when i aim down sights with an mp5, i make sure to not use the front and rear sights together as they were designed.
Funny how he compliments Tarkov´s Sound :D:D:D anyways i love it when it´s not buggy, really satisfying :O great video thumbs up !
Every time the expert starts talking about not game itself but rather players actions you know - it's a good game
Like how the main nods are to tarkov, ready or not and squad exactly the games that I'd expect.
Show him Ground Branch with decent sized units playing properly I'm part of a milsim team that could give you guys footage if you need it, think he'd be well impressed with that game.
I would love to see Billy critique 6 days in fallujah, if you do a part 2 :)
PLEASE GET BILLY SETUP TO TRY ESCAPE FROM TARKOV!! I'd love to see him play it, especially when it's not a level 1 account with base gear playing Offline runs
When you're moving in on a target, you have to departmentalize the situation correctly and as quick as possible the nearer you get to the target
Would've been interesting to hear him talk about Insurgency.
Could here this all day
I would love to see this guy review different GunTuber's "Tactics". No holds barred.
I wanna see him watch more of the squad game
There are flat respirators that go into cheeks. I have an old slavic one. The canisters are important to western militaries because unlike flat ones, which are inserted into the cheeks inside the mask, they can be changed out while still in an unsafe atmosphere.
Please use this man for future Cod or battlefield games 🇬🇧
Despite he knows about gaming, he give me a vibe of grandpa being shock by games, and start recounting his war story. Love it
How amazing is Billy ..
Such a humble, nice guy
I love this man
Be interesting to see him review band of brothers and the pacific
(23:54) Regarding abseiling forward down a wall Mark?? ...... It's just a ball bag tester I LOVE YOU MARK!!!
him saying "canistah" over and over while viewing siege is so pleasing
"i won't say who but they sent a dog in" tell us it's a seal team without telling us it's a seal team 😂😂
Imagine being the literal inspiration for cap. Price from COD...no matter what tabble ur sitting, there´s a solid chance you ARE the most badass on the tabble...
The thing is most of the mistakes in Ready Or Not are actually in the game but aren't shown in the clips, for example. You have to wear a mask if you use CS gas, it is a mechanic. There's also a mechanic that allows you to tell a hostage/hostile to move somewhere or to come to you once they surrender, shame that wasn't shown.
shoots out lights to hide friendly insertion. friendly comes in with headlights on
This is top content.
It’s not that they are doing bad reactions it’s just the gameplay is kinda like the game demos you would see for upcoming games. It’s just like there is so much better gameplay you could use that would better demonstrate the game.
Yes! Finally someone looked at The Regiment, such a good game!
the model for the mp5 may have been good but the game character was not using his rear sight aperture...not sure that's advised
The character got Balidan batch on his left shoulder. Balidan(sacrifice) is the batch used by Indian Parachute special forces.
Billy's reaction to Breakpoint was the exact same as mine! Still fun to play, but so cartoonish.
i'd always learned that you don't want to press check roller-delayed firearms, such as the MP5. I thought for those, you'd want to perform a *chamber* check.
Why is it a bad idea for roller-delayed arms? Does it stop the rollers engaging the recesses?
@josedorsaith5261 I'm not ignoring you, I just can't recall for certain where I heard this! lol
I *think* it might have been Johnathan Ferguson, keeper of Firearms and Artillery at the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds, England. if not mistaken, he is a huge fan of the MP5.
if this is the case, I'll have to figure out which video it was... I'll try to get back with you...
@@daegiovanni5864
Ah, that's quite alright! I'll have a search around myself and edit this comment, should I find an answer
not surprised he loves tarkov; that game is a masterpiece.
For those who played the regiment back in the day on pc, here's a hit of nostalgia for you "WOTASHAMBLES!" a remake of it would be nice, but Konami isn't really a company that gives people what they want these days.
he's like "I'm putting myself in this guys state of mind", average tarkov player - "ruble"
this guy knows his stuff
How did Ground Branch not make the review list?
