ONESTOP.MID on SB16 Voyetra SuperSAPI OPL3 FM MIDI

  • Here is the Windows XP ONESTOP.MID file as played in Windows 3.11 on an original Sound Blaster 16 CT1740 card with Yamaha OPL3 FM Synthesis, with the MIDI Mapper set to "SB16 Ext FM", which uses the 4-operator Voyetra SuperSAPI instrument patches.
    This gives it much smoother-sounding FM synthesis from the OPL3 chip, at the expense of a reduced number of available instrument channels. Because of this, sometimes it doesn't have enough channels to play all the instruments in the song, causing an instrument to momentarily drop out. But despite that and some aberrant clicking noises, the result is far superior to the Basic FM driver, which produces the chintzy kazoo-like 2-operator OPL3 sounds normally associated with MIDI FM synthesis.

    256color.bmp! Wow, haven't seen that in ages! Worst part is there's probably a lot of people out there today that don't know what any of this stuff (background or MIDI) was.
    I seem to think uxwbill's presentation of this on an Aztech Labs 2320 had considerably more depth to it. I remember the days of paying more for a "better" soundcard that was the same otherwise, just had better MIDI capability. Again, most of the modern-day "social media" crowd couldn't tell you what any of this was except old.

    I used to have a SoundBlaster in my old Windows XP computer. It suppoted many different soundfonts and officially supported 5.1 surround sound. I think I might have the original soundcard in my new PC that has Windows 7 on it. And it works☺

    The 4-op mode is courtesy of the Voyetra SuperSAPI! FM driver that some SB16 driver packages load under Windows 3.1x, not so much the MIDI Mapper. Sounds like that is installed, look for the file called opl!sapi.drv. Its by far a superior sounding driver over the default Microsoft one. Support for the SAPI 4-op patches was being added to the Windows 7 FM emulator MIDI driver, but I haven't heard any updates on it.

      @vwestlife  Před 10 lety

      You're right! I looked in the MIDI Mapper configuration and the SB Ext FM setting has channels 1 through 10 mapped to the Voyetra Super Sapi FM synthesis. If I try enabling channels 11 through 16, the sound gets really screwed up because it just doesn't have enough polyphony to handle those extra channels. AFAIK this is what the SB16 software came with, since there is no other Voyetra software installed (such as the Voyetra media player, which I've seen some other sound cards install).

    I'll have to try this on my Compaq Evo D510 SFF sometime. It's got a SoundMAX chip in it, and while its own MIDI set that it provides is emulated (afaik) it still sounds better than Microsoft's own POS that's on every version of Windows.
    For reference, here's canyon.mid played through it. (ignore the "test" bit, i actually uploaded this for Roadgeek, who always runs the canyon test on his new machines!)
    Canyon.mid Test on a Compaq Evo D510 (SoundMAX wavetable)
    Compare that to the MS driver, the SoundMAX synth sounds far, FAR better IMO.

    I love the 3:27 when the soundcard driver is trying to circumvent polyphony limitation playing something like... scratching? It sounds really cool! :)

    I should play this file on my 1998 Compaq Deskpro EP with a Sound Blaster AWE64 Gold ISA card. Unfortunately its running Windows XP Pro SP3 on a PII 400 MHz with 384 MB of RAM, but thankfully the drivers still work completely under XP so I shouldn't have a problem with it.

    The YMF262(OPL3) as far as I'm aware has three mode's of operation, the first one is a YM3812 compatibility mode (with some other sub modes you can set) it's hardwired to be in by default, unless setup otherwise. The second is an 18 channel mode with 2 operators per channel and the third is a 9 channel mode with 4 operators per channel. with the last mode effectively allowing it to work like a YM2151 with an extra 9th channel.

    • @vwestlife
      @vwestlife  Před 10 lety +2

      The OPL3 has four modes:
      ● 18 2-operator channels
      ● 15 2-operator channels + 5 drum channels (drum setting on)
      ● 6 2-operator channels + 6 4-operator channels (4-op setting on)
      ● 3 2-operator channels + 6 4-operator channels + 5 drum channels (both settings on)

    • @Honthetube
      @Honthetube Před 10 lety

      AHH! so what I read about this chip in the first place was wrong.
      it seams a shame to me they didn't give the ymf262 more operators per channel to play with. the authors of game music could have gotten quite creative if they had 18 4op channels at there disposal, instead of 2op's per channel.

  • @SudosFTW
    @SudosFTW Před 10 lety +1

    Definitely a different rendition than I'm used to. This is with 4-operator mode going? it sounds completely alien from what I'm used to with my CT1740 in the Compaq.
    If someone ever figures out how to run it in 4-operator mode on Windows 9x, I'd love to know, just to get that ability.
    *EDIT:* Oh, it's an extended MIDI set. I had no idea such a thing existed.

    • @vwestlife
      @vwestlife  Před 10 lety

      ***** The Windows 3.1 SB16 drivers let you choose Basic FM, All FM, or Ext(ended) FM. Basic FM sounds like the usual "bunch of kazoos". Extended FM is what you hear here. All FM is the combination of both, which sounds very odd!

      No, the sound of the MIDI depends on your hardware. Modern computer play it through a crappy virtual Roland GM soundbank by Microsoft, which is terrible in sound.

    • @Dan-TechAndMusic
      @Dan-TechAndMusic Před 10 lety +1

      Baz B As in "playing through", I do not mean the device you play the sound through like a mixer, but a virtual soundbank. The MIDI file doesn't contain waveforms like a MP3 or WAV file, but just mostly commands such as BPM, what instruments play what, ect. The music player on your PC translates this to sound using that soundbank, or maps it to a synthesizer you hook up. I can for instance hook my Yamaha keyboard up to my PC and play MIDI files through there, and it will sound different.

      The software synth that comes with the Mac for playing MIDI files is pretty bad too really, I've got some MIDI files of music from old NES games that I downloaded from Nintendo MIDI music years ago, they play on my mac, but they sound like rubbish, the volume goes up and down like crazy, and other odd things happen. Does anyone know of a software player for modern Windows or the Mac that can emulate the sounds of the Yamaha OPL2/OPL3 chipset or wavetable synthesisers like the Roland MT-32 or Roland Sound Canvas or things like that?
