  • What if Breath of the Wild 2 were to take inspiration from every other installment in the series? Which aspect from each game could the sequel utilize? Today, I explore this question together with Xenogamer. This part 1 covers half of the total list. After watching this one, be sure to head over to Xenogamer's Channel and watch part 2!

    I really hope it’s like a more open game like BotW but with great story and dungeons like all the other Zeldas. This could really be the best one yet.

    Basically:
    - An even better feeling of exploration, as in the original Zelda game (for example, finding dungeons in any place and not been signaled to you).
    - The game doesn't need to be afraid of being different and not being like the other Zelda games including BotW.
    - A parallelism between two different worlds, as did A Link to the Past with the light and the dark world.
    - A feeling of mystery like in Link's Awakening.
    - A big "plot twist" or difference in the story and gameplay like in Ocarina of Time with Young Link and Adult Link.
    - Amazing side-quests.
    - A relation with Breath of the Wild, as if some aspects of your game were also in the sequel (tunics...).
    - A new villain.
    - A better exploration of the sea.
    *Seems right to me.*

      On the 'difference in gameplay' aspect: a simplistic but defined difference would be to have whatever mechanic repopulates the monsters (like the blood moon did in BotW) not kick in until Ganon is found and resurrected and for him to be found partway through the game. Probably wouldn't be enough for everyone, but I think it would be interesting.

    It would be really cool to find dungeons randomly while exploring but I feel like it could be too frustrating if you were missing a dungeon since you may have overlooked an area, maybe if you could find them before you are told about them but npcs in the region would give you hints if you were struggling.

      I think hidden stuff is great, but they should always give you a resource to rely on if you're not sure where else to look or what to do. I think too many games try too hard to EITHER hold your hand and mark everything right away, OR tell you nothing, even if you're willing to accept some help. It's like in Morrowind how you can wander on your own and find crazy stuff if you look in the right places, or you can take on quests and you'll be guided to interesting places. (Unless you're getting directions from Mehrunes Dagon. That guy's terrible at giving directions. XD )

    I like a lot of the ideas here. Although I will say I honestly enjoyed the memory bit from BOTW. That itself brought the element of mystery you want to take from Link's Awakening. I enjoyed finding out what the heck happened beyond just the obvious stuff. How did Link interact with the other characters and Zelda? Piecing together that relationship was a great drive for me to keep exploring and looking for the next memory.
    Obviously wouldn't ask for them to do that again. But I do appreciate it doing what it did.

  • @jasonnewbery

      Also I'm 80% certain they'll keep it that way in the sequel despite the complaining. After all its a bunch of dlc ideas they wanted to do but couldn't due to how many they had.
      The ghost of Kakariko (a sheikah woman, already theorized to be dorian's late wife), might make an appearance. There was also talk of the aliens from MM reappearing and stealing cows...far as I know off the top of my head, there _is_ a stable or two that actually has cows and would be perfect. Them or poes would be good in the overworld. Poes around ruins, and the aliens in the open fields near the stables with cows and the ranch ruins. I really want them to put Epona in the game, not as amiibo, but have a group of horses nearby that have a chance to spawn Epona. _Something._ instead of rupees, they could've given out more exclusive gear or something. The mini game on Eventide could've given us the option to change our paraglinder's color--given we have materials.

      *Now read your reply assuming there is one.*
      Memories just bog things down when every NPC speaks about how Link fell, Zelda was sealed, Zelda and Link failed. Those memories literally can be summed up in to 4 memories, Zelda, Zelda 2, Link, Link 2. This is why people hated it.
      Memories are used to create HONEST contradictions, new reasoning, and questioning what you know. When a memory plot or subplot doesn't do that it tends to be disliked because it did literally nothing.

  • @gregpl9363
    @gregpl9363 Před 3 lety +10

    was thinking on a theory on how, link and Zelda might be back in time in the first cutscene, trying to prevent the calamity from happening by finding the source they've learned about. but in their attempt doing so they awaken the source itself, being Ganondorf. might be the reason for the shrines not being above ground and hyrule castle, though from a distance, looks in better shape than it was in BOTW. (again, as far as the eye can see). perhaps the hint of the music playing in the trailer, sounding like it is in reverse no matter which way you listen to it ( reversing the theme still sounds like a reversed version and vice versa.... try saying that 3 times...). again its just a thought but to me it kind of fits.. seeing as the Zonai structures seem a bit less old within the location where Ganondorf is kept. ah well

    • @MonsterMaze
      @MonsterMaze  Před 3 lety +2

      Indeed. NBC did a great theory on that one. And I guess in many ways it does make sense. The only thing that debunk's this theory is that we still see some ruins in the overworld seen in the trailer. The wall of the great plateau for instance still looks as heavily damaged as it did after the Calamity.

    • @gregpl9363
      @gregpl9363 Před 3 lety

      @@MonsterMaze yeah I noticed that too, but which calamity is the question, seeing as the Great calamity of 10 000 years ago, though won, was a fight also. and according to the scripture/image of the previous hero and princess versus the calamity, it appears to be taking place in the midst of Hyrule field. so even then some damage couldve been done you know?, and if we go by other theories that great plateau is old castle town etc. it might've been partially ruined already seeing as its ancient.. its too bad you can't spot any settlements around in the footage. they would've given a bit more confirmation

    @anonymousfellow8879 Před 3 lety +7

    Edit: Overall, absolutely fantastic list that I can mostly agree with for once.
    -
    -
    (I’d argue that BotW’s use of memories to tell the story of Hyrule’s fall was absolutely brilliant-it told a much more complete story than the franchise typically does, and BotW’s Map made the utter ruin of the kingdom much more impactful. In most games Ganon(dorf) or some other villain takes over, but other than a change of leadership and maybe the castle and/or castletown getting destroyed, the peoples’ daily lives aren’t affected at all. But that simply isn’t the case in BotW, and you’re constantly reminded of the Ruin and failure Link’s struggling to remember, even after being told about it directly and indirectly. The memories still have a different impact.
    (It’s quite honestly one of the very few times I’ve seen the Amnesia Trope used well and following how ACTUAL amnesia works in any source of media, and it complimented the NonLinear Approach of gameplay perfectly to tell one of the best albeit still simple stories in the franchise (and competing with top storytellers like MM, LA, and LBW). So in a way, BotW *did* have a Mystery in that it’s via memories and intentionally seeking out journals and listening to various NPCs vs speeding through their dialogue that we learn HOW Hyrule was destroyed so utterly)

      @MonsterMaze  Před 3 lety +2

      thats a great perspective on it. It if of course at the end of the day a matter of preference. I didn't mind the meories. But I feel like there could have been more story present in the present day, and not have everything confined to the past. But thats just me ^^

      I think LBW handled a good compromise in terms of storytelling, despite having a very nonlinear approach as well:
      Specific Events and Cutscenes were activated by how many pendants or sages Link collected or rescued.

You often felt like you could not use your good weapons cause they would break, but you can't use the weak ones, because they don't do enough damage. It would be awesome to have a way to repair weapons, the repair cost could be equivalent to the type of weapon, rank of weapon, magical properties, and how damaged the weapon is.

    I agree on every point, but you forgot one point shared between Ocarina of Time and Majoras Mask, as well as Twiglight Princess!
    Atmoshpere!
    I originally had 3 things I missed in Breath of the Wild.
    1-A secoundary, personal villain (I.E Vati, Zant, Ghirrahim)
    2-The Hook Shoot or Grapling Hook.(Would make climbing in the rain a lot better)
    3-The dark atmosphere.(This is the big one)
    When I play OoT, MM or TP I have the feeling that, while things look fine on the surface, if I where to look deeper into it all, I'd quickly discover that something is very wrong with the world.
    Like Kakariko Village from OoT, a happy vibrant town that hiddes a mind scarring darkness.
    Yes, you have a thin layer of niceity and wholesomeness, but once you look back at what drives you, you see how all of that with come crashing down if you don't do anything!
    It's like a large lake, it's shores are beautifull and vibrant, the shallow parts are clean and clear.
    Then you go out to the middle, and when you look down you see nothing but a deep dark abyss that contains something that will break the tranquility of the lake.
    That cold, deep dread of what is unknown and laying in wait at the bottom of the deep.
    Hope I didn't lose you in the allegory...
    But that's the best way I can explain it!

    The save transfer idea reminds me of Golden Sun and its sequel on the GBA. The things that were transferred were:
    - Your inventory and stats, but I think that wouldn't work well for a Zelda game
    - Wether or not you completed certain sidequests: this would give you a few bonus unique items throughout the game, which were good but didn't break the game. I think that would actually fit well for Tarrey Town for example
    - It allowed you to access a bonus dungeon if you had found all (or almost all) djinn which were some sort of rare collectibles (roughly equivalent to heart pieces in terms of rarity and usefulness). I'm not sure if locking away an entire dungeon to people who haven't, say, completed all shrines for example, would be a good idea, but getting some sort of powerful unique item could be great

    My feelings on the matter- trying not to copy your list.
    LoZ: Open exploration but with limits. Too much freedom takes away from the essential Zelda experience.
    AoL: Link's original appearance. I know we won't get this, based on the trailer, so at least give us early access to Link's original green tunic. His new design sucks.
    LttP: Non-essential items like the canes of Byrna and of Somaria.
    LA: A menu screen with music. Seriously.
    OoT: A more interesting and varied inventory and items.
    MM: Nailed this one, I need say no more.
    Oracles: More directly useful (or just fun) collectibles like the rings.
    WW: A magical musical instrument.
    FS: Is the Four Sword too much to hope for? Maybe as an amiibo reward?
    FSA: Dark Link as an actual character.
    MC: Kinstones! These are a great collectible which have an awesome variety of effects, some event altering the course of events in the game in small ways. It's so sad kinstones have never made a return!
    TP: More substantial ties to previous games. Lore is better than Easter egg references.
    PH: A well fleshed-out companion for your travels like Linebeck. Linebeck does not get enough love.
    ST: Zelda as a straight-up playable character. I want co-op or at least switchable character control, like with Gongoron in PH and Kafei in MM, but specifically for Zelda.
    SS: What you said, but to add something more general, an unbreakable Master Sword.
    HW: Linkle
    ALBW: So much I want to take from my favorite game in the series, but to name just one: More varied puzzle-solving, that uses more than just the items in your inventory.
    TFH: A kickass soundtrack! 90% of BotW's soundtrack can go suck on a cucco. TFH has one of the best in the series. Take notes!
    BotW: Ruins to explore and theorize about!

    I think the Majora's Mask's characters feel the most alive in part because their mortality is actually relevant in the game's story. Not only that, people's lives are greatly changed by some of your actions. People in Breath of the Wild have lives that don't really change, which at times can even be frustrating because you keep bumping into them randomly when they're in trouble again.
    The only exception is Tarrey Town, where people actually moved to somewhere else permanently and even experienced major life changes there. In that vein, I think it'd be awesome if Breath 2 had a major mechanic with rebuilding Hyrule and changing the world instead of having all enemies regenerate endlessly. It would give more purpose to the combat too since you'd have battles that permanently change things on the map. :) Just maybe avoid things like generic 'settlement attack' quests and stuff. We don't need Preston Garvey coming to warn us about another settlement that needs help every 20 minutes. XD
    (I also think Link and Zelda wandering Hyrule rebuilding peoples' lives and homes is really cute. :) )

    It would be awesome to have to find the Dungeons yourself, I never finished it but one of the many Zelda style maps I tried to make in Minecraft, that's how I did it a lot of them were hidden and you might find some hint to where they were and the outside usually had some kind of statue or something outside it the idea being you'd see something out of place and find the entrance near by. Maybe one day I'll go back and finish at least one of my Zelda worlds in Minecraft because making the Dungeons puzzles and music was a lot of fun just kind of abandoned them. Anyway sorry for that off topic rant.

      It's only challenging because of the limited movement you can do in that game. Also you constantly get hurt because you aren't invincible while being hit but for what seems to be for only half a second. And the damage adds up fast because of that. Also things just hurt.

    It’s been accepted at face value that Aonuma’s quote about the sequel means that the map will be the same one we had in BotW, however, that kind of detail of their plans has not been confirmed. The translation is: ‘we wanted to revisit the same world’, but that doesn’t meant they will reuse the same map or areas. It simply could mean that they wanted to continue the story in another location.

  • @ChaoticHoly
    @ChaoticHoly Před 3 lety +1

    The more I think of it, then more I want this:
    Game-spanning "politicking/questing" (with Zelda) with the various Tribes of Hyrule to rebuild Central Hyrule - player ability to "barter/bargain/mediate" between the races results in different quality/size/composition/richness of city quarters, etc. Example: Who do you have rebuild Lon Lon Ranch: Hylians, Zora, Goron, Rito, Sheikah, or Gerudo?
    1-Hylians neither exceed nor suck at rebuilding & running the ranch - Average in every way,
    2-Zora have no idea how to ride horses, but they are business savvy and will introduce specific mini-games to play on horseback,
    3-Goron also have no idea how to ride horses, but they can sure tame those wild stallions for you (they terrify the horses),
    4-Rito are the exact opposite of the Zora: they can ride of all things, but they need a lot of help/player attention figuring-out how to run the place ,
    5-Sheikah are very adept with horses but have absolutely no clue how to operate a ranch in the open, may have to fight them tooth-and-nail depending on player choices to keep them from "hiding the ranch away",
    6-Gerudo are absolutely excellent at running the ranch (and can even give toss-backs to the little teaser of wearing the Gerudo mask to Talon or Nabooru), but no-one initially trusts them so they're the slowest/hardest to rebuild the Ranch with.
    --Now, combine that concept with the various little village & garrison remains around Central Hyrule where the player can decide how to divvy-up Central Hyrule between the peoples in both sections and sizes (which reflects on Hyrule Castle Town or vice-verse)...maybe even some light resource management (who gets certain resources first, what resources to give out, etc., which effects both rebuild speed and quality for those specific peoples), politicking when it comes to disputes (like discovering and then having to deal with ancient rivalries between the peoples like the Rito & the Zora, for instance), things like that.
    Other things I want to see / see return from past games:
    Zelda as a guide (or even playable) character
    Classic/Updated dungeons, explorable caves (if not a full-fledged "Underworld"), etc.
    Return of ("ruined") previous dungeons (Level 1, Eastern Palace, Snowpeak Ruins)
    Expanded Overworld
    Upgradable Items (like a "Legendary Bow" that starts weak but upgrades & is unbreakable)
    Customizable combinable Weapons (Two words: "Bomb Spear". Three Words: "Boomerang Electric Hammer")
    Magic (BotW kinda did this with the Champion abilities, but Bombos)
    Sword Skills (like in Adventure of Link, Minish Cap, SoulCalibur II, etc.)
    Greater variety in enemies
    Diving
    Quality Subquests. BotW subquests were meh as the NPCs were mostly one-and-done while the rewards were lame. Gimme higher durable weapons/shields, Heart/Stamina Pieces, Treasure Maps, Clues to dungeon locations/access - and make the NPCs memorable!
    More weird abilities like shield surfing & "pot-lid time" (like walk on water as in AoL)

      @Manek Iridius Oh, I dunno. It's more Zelda than Hyrule Warriors, that's for certain. This is, after all, a world-building/Kingdom re-building concept. BoTW2 needs time travel and epic dungeons a la OoT, a sense of impending doom and an intricate tactic to avoid it along with an interwoven plot a la Majora's Mask (also love the mask abilities dynamics), a rewarding storyline and super interesting side quest locations like Windwaker, a dark-esque alternate world and GREAT non-generic terrain like Twilight Princess, some level of freshness and engaging gameplay like Skyward Sword, and an open world feel with lots of weapon choices like BoTW.
