My first playtrough, did the temples got like 13 hearts, then destroyed Ganon. Its what a hero must do. Second, I am just enjoying going around completing quests, building death machines and exploring. Well worth the 65 euros man. I still have the golden cartridge from the original NES zelda. That costed a lot of money back in the day, but dad was cool enough to say: "you did well at school, here is a chest with the gold cartridge". Quest completed. Just now I was going for a chasm, and I saw Naydra, grabbed a claw, then I forgot what I was doing. Yeah so much fun, and at 42 years old (until november) I felt the magic from 36 years ago. I hope Nintendo keeps their tradition of well made games. I know Mario is the mascot, but link is the appointed knight. This resonates so much with me, dunno why. Also 1000 korok seeds? Not gonna do it. I know what you get from it...

I was one of those people who came across the 5th dungeon on "accident". At first, I was exploring the underground and randomly came across the Construct Factory. It looked epic, but after climbing around for a bit I couldn't find anything to do, so I just left knowing that there was something important, likely story related, that would happen there later. Little later, I wanted to explore those thunderclouds in the sky because I figured obviously there had to be something cool hidden there. I entered the storm and the first island I landed on happened to be Dragonhead Island. Stumbled around for a bit, found a shrine and Mineru's mask and did the quest from there.
At least I managed to do the memories in order and didn't entirely get the Zelda reveal spoiled. I found the abandoned shrine with the map and took pictures of all the wall paintings so I could look up the order while I was out exploring. Early on I did think "wouldn't it be funny if Zelda turned out to be the Light Dragon, lol jk XD" so I saw the reveal coming, but it was still awesome when it was confirmed.

I was exploring in the depths and came across it
I assumed that I was missing something since the gate thingies kept turning red when I tried to interact with them, but I had no idea it could be plot related (this was before I did the fire temple so I didn't know sage content could be in the depths)
I googled it and immediately got spoiled that there was a fifth sage and that it was mineru
I wish the game was a tiny bit more linear because it just made me kinda bored when I returned to it

    • @BaffledAlways

I came across the construct depots and the dragonhead isles first too, and at the time I liked it because I got to discover stuff on my own without the game telling me to, but when I eventually found out the whole point of the ring ruins was part of a quest to lead you to the spirit temple, I felt like I had robbed myself of part of the game.
On the memories though I didn't mind watching them out of order. Reminded me of the Netflix show kaleidoscope, and I embraced the messiness of finding out what happens out of order

1:04:35 I think Elden Ring did this the right way. While letting you freely explore around 5 open world areas the second you step into the world, it locks you away from the endgame by blocking you from going to the capital unless you defeated atleast 2 of the 4 possible main bosses you can kill at this point in time.
It also constantly shows you the directions to go down the main paths, without forcing you to do any of them if you dont want to.

Yeah I easily got the memo on the memories' order, but beefed it with Mineru. I found the factory on my own because I live in the Depths. The sheer cliffs in darkness, the looming froxes, the weird flora, the gloom and lightroots, it's perfect. Then, I discovered Thunderhead Island because I wanted to see the big cloud mystery and had the exact number of hearts needed to get the door to open. Mineru was my second sage in the game after Tulin 😂. I still only have three sages, but I've discovered every single lightroot and have all three sages upgraded lolll. Idk I love the exploration in the game so much that I keep getting sidetracked, and the game kinda punishes you for not doing things in the intended linear order. I don't think linearity is necessarily the solution, though; rather, I think that the stuff should be hidden better and have better consequences when doing it out of order. Strict linearity in open world games is pretty bad when it's done. I think a few soft linearity checks could work, though. Make Thunderhead Island unreachable unless the player gets the lightning attack up armor like usual, explores enough to find the lightning resist armor and levels it up to level 2, or has the Lightning Helm replica from the Yiga hideout. Make it so the Light Dragon only offers the Master Sword to you after she sheds her last tear or you've talked to the Great Deku Tree or you've restored the giant Hylia statue and it tells you to seek the Light Dragon. Having multiple things that can trigger one event happening is a brilliant way to make players feel like they're playing how they want to play while still making things difficult to discover early unless you're actively seeking them out.

So I kinda managed to make my way to dragon head island and the spirit temple before finishing the region phenomenon quests (a couple of hours of squinting through the fog on the map and drinking sticky potions in case you were wondering). While it was kinda cool to discover before it was mentioned, I would not advise it for a first playthrough 😅 it made the narrative feel a bit wonky when they lead up to revealing that there must be another sage only to be like "Oh.. You found it. Cool, moving on". And the following quest to clear up the island felt kinda pointless. It made the hot research dude happy though.
So that and finding all the dragon tears while everyone continues to scratch their heads about the Zelda sightings lead to a few narratively jarring moments. Love the game though and I am looking forward to replaying it with full control over the pacing

For a "Zonai-less run," I think that you should still be allowed to use the Zonai devices that are strewn about, and only use zonai capsules when ABSOLUTELY necessary (which is only like twice as far as I know - getting to Eventide Sky Island and Akkala Sky Labyrinth). There are a lot of things the devs probably intended for you to use certain devices, and they will often provide those in the area.

BOTW & TOTK both sitting over 250hrs (lol). I ended up using maps to find the last 10 or so shrines, and looked up shrine walkthrough for just one bc I couldn’t get the damn thing to curve properly (guide said to bomb the switch). I only upgraded armour that I used, didn’t get monster trophies bc lazy.
Fumbling with the devices in an attempt to make something that drives/flies straight was.,, interesting. I saw loads of amazing builds people made, and I’m here like “lol it go straight yay!”
I enjoy open games, it lets me do everything I want while ignoring the main story. I did find the 5th sage early, the lightning sky isle just seemed too appealing!
Bosses were all fine. I died in Ganons lair when I found it early (like 5 hearts early, with 1 sage!)… all other deaths were misadventures or while running from a lynel.

Because if he permanently takes you down to 1 heart, everytime he hits you, you get brought down to a quarter of a heart no matter what attack he uses. So then you can just use eat 2 apples and repeat, you're practically invincible

This is an amazing video Klubb, definitely your best one no doubt about it! I share the exact same thoughts about this game as you my friend.
The shrines in this game are a big step up from Breath of the Wild. While I did love Breath of the Wild's; this game goes even further! I did enjoy the dungeons, but I'll be honest, I didn't like that they were all activate terminals. I thought the water temple was too easy. The wind temple definitely seemed to be the one to do first with it being smaller in scope, I enjoyed the lightning temple and the fire temple because I really had to think about what I was doing. Yes, I did the Fire Temple without cheating and for that I found it to be the best dungeon in the game.
About the Spirit Temple, I had that exact thing happen, I stumbled across it completely by accident, while there was a BIG wow factor to that for me, I missed that entire build up, which would've been so much more meaningful and better paced. On the topic of build up, I fully agree that the memories should be shown in order, it would make the story have the proper impact it really does. I wouldn't be bothered if the glyphs stayed the same, they could be an easter egg as to where you're supposed to go. Thankfully, my memory findings weren't too messed up and did leave a big impact on me, and I didn't find the Master Sword until I'd seen the memories. I would like if we could've actually played through some bits as Zelda and maybe interacted with the characters in that time, even if they were linear sections, I'd be fine with that.
On the topic of linear, while BotW and TotK use non-linearity to it's advantage that allow for complete exploration without disruption, like you say, the story's impact suffers for it greatly.
I do like that there's a lot more side things to do in the game. Once I'd done the shrines and side quests in BotW, I was finished with the game. But with TotK, I've still got way more to do. With the addition of all these quests, it makes the world feel more alive, something that was very much needed for me to love it a second time round.
DLC-wise, I'm glad this game isn't getting any, there's more than enough here for this game to last, plus I like that the game is a complete package, that's how games should be (most of the time). I thought it was cool for BotW to get DLC, I still miss my precious Master-Cycle Zero, but I don't want DLC to be a reoccurring thing in Zelda games.

With traditional zelda dungeons, yes I like them, but they're essentially fetch quests with a boss fight at the end. Whereas with these dungeons, it's more like ''you have a goal, find your own way there'' - and I love that you can cheese them if you really want to! There's many ways to solve a given dungeon, and you can do the parts of a dungeon in nearly any order.
    I love it!

I also thought Yona was a villain because of her toxic-purple, acid-green color scheme. Since Link hadn't met her before the Upheaval, I suspected that she was the evil mastermind behind all the pollution. The fact that Mipha's statue seemed to have been replaced also rubbed me the wrong way (that is, until I stumbled upon Mipha's Court). After realizing that Yona was a genuine sweetheart all along, I just felt super stoked for my fish boi Sidon. great video! i agree with a ton of your points, especially about the memories, but i definitely have to say that i cant relate to your disappointment that you can find the spirit temple early. maybe that's because i've never been a huge fan of zelda games (aside from the two most recent ones, which i've heard from several people "don't count"), as i find often their linear nature to be too restricting or frustrating. I was so floored and excited to find a completely unknown dungeon all on my own (even if it's kind of obvious in retrospect). i didn't even clear the clouds beforehand; i saw the weird shape of the clouds and thought "there's DEFINITELY something cool in there." i went through the thunderhead isles stumbling around in the fog, honestly just looking for the shrine, because i had no idea you COULD clear the clouds. finding the mask, taking it down, having my growing suspicions about a fifth dungeon confirmed; it was thrilling. notably, i also did this after collecting all of the memories (which i skipped upon receiving and watched cohesively later, which i am very happy i did lol), so my story experience wasn't affected.
i loved the thunder temple, it was awesome! honestly the whole gerudo region was stunningly cool. loved the cold shock that i got when i first walked into the once-bustling town, made even more effective by playing botw beforehand. plus the early boss reveal! super cool. the atmosphere inside the dungeon is amazing, and the puzzles were engaging, and i loved the way they linked into each other. a good amount of wiggle room for me, personally. not to mention how absolutely amazing the final boss was!! such a stellar improvement over botw, and it also makes for some very interesting speedruns.
ultimately, i think the open world gameplay is an extremely delicate tightrope for a zelda game to walk. where is the line between too much freedom and too little? it obviously depends on who you ask, because everyone wants something different out of a game. i think it hits the mark near-perfectly for me (i have some grievances with the way the great sky island tutorial is structured but that's me being salty). i will forever remember the rush of joy i felt when i realized there was a fifth dungeon; in a way, i feel that it was more effective and special than if i had the fanfare and buildup of the quests beforehand. i'm intrigued to see where the next game lands on the linear to non-linear scale. anyway, wonderful video! i'll make sure to look into your other stuff, because you clearly make these videos with care (i absolutely cannot imagine going through all the koroks, good lord. i admire your persistence). thanks for your work :)

It was so fun and I was a little proud of myself for finding a sage without the yellow blinking dots.
To me it feels like the true problem is that nintendo made it very obvious that this is the "wrong way to progress". Like you said, Purrah just tells you "whaaaat? You where there already???" OO and its really anoying like you did a bad thing or something. In a truely free open world experience there should have been a way to progress that feels just as natural.
I do agree on the memories and dungeans standing to be more linear tho. Sometimes railroading can absolutley be a good thing

I really liked ur video and how u talked about all the topics. I agree with u on a lot of the topics. the only thing that is different for me is that u told ur perspective fully without trying to see the other perspective. There are a lot of people who likes to have the choice after running it down correctly the first time to do some stuff easier like a dungun speedrun or whatever. Personally I like to have the freedom or i like that I have the freedom to just either fully the story or run blind in. I do wish they make it more clear on the tears order cuz I saw that Sona died as 3rd video and like at 5th I saw when mineru mentions swallowing the Secret Stone and my brain connected the dots immediately. Still loved ur opinion and that u mentioned everything it just felt a little bit one sided for me personally. I am looking forward for more videos like this. Sorry for my bad English xD

Great recap! Even with all my gripes about TOTK, it's still one of my favorite games of all time. I see myself revisiting it again in a year or two and starting over.

i feel like a better comparison to the depths would be Lorule from a link between worlds, dispite being essentially the same, there are differences, such as the fact that a link between worlds tries much harder to imply that lorule is a mirrored version of hyrule, while a link to the past's dark world is just, a dark world that had to stay within the confines of a similar map because of hardware.

the thing about BotW's Champion Abilities, vs TotK's Sage Powers, is that the Champions were like an "extension" of Link's abilities-- hold the Jump button for a second, and Revali's Gale will send you wayyy up; hold the Shield button, and Daruk's Protection will nullify any and all damage; hold the Attack button (charge a spin) and Urbosa's Fury will expand your effective radius; and of course, Mipha's Grace can undo fatal damage and then some...
...whereas TotK's powers were more like the Sages directly helping Link, since you have to walk up and Ask them to activate it each time...in my opinion, Nintendo couldve made the squad much easier to use by simply changing the input needed-- for example, Holding a D-Pad Direction usually brings up a menu (for swapping weapons/bows, shields, or hand-runes)...and the direction Relates to the function-- Link holds his shield in his Left hand, so holding D-Pad Left pulls up the Shield Menu...
so why not use "Hold D-Pad Down" to bring up a Sages Menu? just Tapping it could stay as the Whistle button (which RARELY works as advertised, at "summoning" your companions), but Holding it should let you select a specific sage and automatically Activate their ability (like making the water-bubble, or expanding the lightning-circle)...
...there are a lot of 'small misses' that start to overshadow the 'great hits' that this game achieved...hell, even limiting the House Building to FIFTEEN PARTS, and decorations like Flower Beds counting toward that limit, is just another example of how they were just So Close to what couldve been called a 'perfect' game...

I think Future Zelda Games can be made like:
    One Botw/Totk ish
    And
    One Classic Zelda game
To avoid getting bored of both formulas at the same time

I didnt have an issue with prize shrines because I found that sometimes after going thru the tedius process of getting to it (usually by my own brain over complicating the puzzle) I dont *want* to deal with a new puzzle. Sometimes I just wanna run in, get my orb and dip. I do love puzzles but when you've been stuck on one for a bit the frustration just makes you want it over so I appriciated them quite a bit.

30:06 What I liked the most about BotW weapons was how many beautiful designs there were. I used to keep an entire inventory of different, even weak weapons just for style points and cosplay purposes. In TotK it eventually all devolved into a clown shivs with a pompon (silver boko horns).

37:32 I wish Wolf Link worked as companions in TotK. So once unlocked you could toggle it from inventory so you wouldn't have to constantly rescan it every time you took a longer glider flight or entered a city.
