You need the wisdom (or knowledge) to do something, the power (or physical skills) to do it, and the courage to actually go out and do it. With those three virtues you can do anything.

Thematically, it shows that courage and wisdom can topple seemingly insurmountable power. Thats why power is the top piece held up by the other two could also mean that power without courage and wisdom is destined to fall. Definitely layers to this design.

+soulangel57 So many layers to Zelda we're not even aware of. I keep discovering hidden-in-plain-sight epiphanies.
The series is spiritual & metaphysical. It's like it's tapping into ancient real world knowledge.
That's why these Zelda Theorists come off as Religious Scholars to a degree debating & discussing philosophies.
The mathematical rhyme of how that Triforce is set up-Power upheld or toppled by Wisdom & Courage.
It lets you know how deep Nintendo thinks this series through. They DO NOT phone in the story.
I think they had ideas of hitting higher-minded ideas from the outset of the series even though the lore was still mostly primordial at that stage. They wanted this "Hyrule Fantasy" to rhyme with "Earth Reality" & I think they were successful.

    • @mattgerlach744

Growing up on the Zelda series, I've always loved the philosophical and spiritual aspects of the Triforce, and how Link, Zelda, and Ganon are avatars of each piece. Link starts each game with Courage, but no Power or Wisdom. He doesn't know where to go, what to do, and has none of the tools to do any of it, but has a foolhardy willingness to just yeet himself into danger, and in the process finds Power and Wisdom, which is why he always becomes the hero of legend. Zelda (especially in botw) is Wisdom without Power or Courage. She knows what she's expected to do in life, but struggles with her connection to her Power and her Courage. And of course, Ganon is Power without Courage and Wisdom, which becomes cruel, petty, and evil.

There’s also another related Christian symbol specific to Irish culture (or Celtic in general): the Triquetra. It’s a knot with three parts, and each part does loosely resemble a triangle while still being intrinsically connected to the others. It’s used a lot in various medieval imagery, and specifically used by monks and scholars when decorating medieval manuscripts.
And if that was the inspiration, it would be really difficult to design it with the graphics at the time of A Link to the Past. Triangles and dorito halos would be way easier to put into 2d graphics. 😂

As a student of theology and a Zelda fan, I've always seen the references to Christianity as somehting cool. I've also thought the Triforce was a reference to the Trinity, not just because of the triangle simbols, but also because there are some other similarities:
    1) Both, the Triforce and the Trinity, are "three and one". The Doctrine of the Trinity teaches that God is one, but exists as three persons (some say "one what and three whos"). The Triforce is one object, but also three.
    2) Both have, in each of it's members, a distinction of purpose, while having the same power.
    3) The Triforce of Power might refer to God the Father, who is often called "Almighty" ("El Shaddai" in hebrew); the Triforce of Wisdom might refer to Jesus, who is called the Logos ("reason" in greek) and Wisdom; the Triforce of Courage might be a vage reference to the Holy Spirit, since he is said to help Christians to face the world, sin and the devil.

Hello! Devout Catholic Christian here! It’s kind of interesting to see these possible connections to Christianity in terms of the tri-force. The reason I say that is because growing up I always related to tri-force to the holy Trinity! Not in a blasphemous way, mind you, but just enough that I found it quite fascinating.
In fact, I would often try to figure out which parts of the holy Trinity would correlate to which parts of the tri-force, although as I’ve grown much older I realized that any part of the holy Trinity correlate to any part of the tri-force. This makes sense as the holy Trinity are all the same one true God just different parts of the same God. Just as how Saint Patrick preached it in Ireland by using the image of a three leaf clover. But still fun to explore nonetheless!
    Wonderful video!

Well that's certainly more interesting than someone spilling a bag of Doritos. XD
The Trinity aspect also seems more in line with how a Triforce Piece in the early games was treated as a single relic of power and not as a part of a collective as the triangular depiction of the Trinity is already a whole representing 3 parts. As for any concerns about the many iterations of Christian mythology producing many different symbols, if someone is looking at them for inspiration, it's not really important to be accurate to the real thing, and probably better not to be.

+James R McGalliard That's EXACTLY what it is. It's the Trinity. But actually it has become so much more.
Zelda has always had a religious fiber at its core. But it has expanded religious concepts beyond Christianity.
It has blended ideas from ALL religions including Christianity to make a distinct mix that resonates with players.
The series is spiritual & metaphysical & discussing the lore of the game becomes a way to tap into these real life concepts. That's why Zelda Theorizers feel like Religious Scholars interpreting ancient texts.
There's something VERY DEEP about this series & Nintendo has been building upon this for 35 years.
I think even at the outset when the lore was still primordial Nintendo wanted this series to hit on a deeper level.
They wanted it to feel profound. They wanted this fantasy to feel like reality & they did it by using real world philosophies.

I always thought of the three components of the Triforce as being about what it is you need to do what you want to do. Power, Wisdom, and Courage make sense in this regard, as Power represents what materials or abilities you need to do it, Wisdom represents what knowledge you need to do it, and Courage represents one's willingness to do it. This why the 3 come together to form a wish-granting device.

Children tend to have much more courage since death is a lesser understood concept. Mother's have to teach their children the wisdom they learned in order to help them grow. Crones, like maidens, have no fear limiting them as death becomes a friend, leading to having both wisdom and courage.

IF (and this is speculation) Miyamoto had always intended the Triforce to have three pieces (which I can't be 100% sure of), there was an in-story reason that the completed artifact wasn't shown in game.
In Zelda 2, the Triforce of Courage is said to have long been lost, sealed away by a previous king, and the only one who knows of it is Impa. So it didn't show up in the first game because it was meant to be a plot twist for the sequel, which they were already hoping to make while working on the original.

The topic of eastern and western influences is super fascinating to me bc it really helps pinpoint the unique identity the series has procured for itself. So maybe there was a plan for a larger story from the start?
Also, I think it makes sense that they went with a triangle shape in the first game. If the Triforces were supposed to be microchips, maybe you'd still need to assemble them and a triangle is a great shape to use to clearly show two things snapping together.

Nintendo Power vol.136 identified the Triforce image as a Shinto symbol in a behind-the-scenes feature on Majora's Mask. Jason Leung was visiting Nintendo in Japan to begin the localization work, and he describes walking through the nearby Fushimi Inari Shrine, which Miyamoto said had given him ideas for Star Fox 64. "As I walked through the temple, I noticed Keatonlike fox toys and masks were being sold at the nearby stands and symbols that looked like Triforces were painted on cups and tapestries." There's an image of one such stand on the page with this caption "Masks and Triforces (they're really Shinto symbols) are common sights in Japan." The theme of the piece is how the Majora's Mask team was drawing from their daily lives while making the game. Of course, this is Nintendo of America's take on the matter, but this probably popularized fans' recognition of the Triforce as a Shinto symbol. I don't think this invalidates your argument about the development of the icon and its Indiana Jones roots.
Meanwhile my Catholic church had that knotted Celtic Trinity-triangle front and center in stained glass, so my mind would drift and I'd play around with associating the concepts.

3:00 - "This title shows the first depiction of the triforce itself, but not in the game itself".
Well, looks like you haven't finished Zelda II 😬
The triforce appears in the end screen where the game thanks you for playing.
This screen also offers one of the dopest songs in my opinion, even if only 30 seconds long.

Yeah I was indeed made aware of it. It's like an after credits thing correct? It's been 2 decades since I last finished Zelda 2 haha. And I'm pretty sure I may have turned off the console before the credits ended. But yeah, Zelda 2 is definitely the one to star the complete symbol then.

Awesome video. As a Christian, the first thing I thought of seeing the Triforce was the power of the Father, courage of the Son and wisdom of the Spirit. It’d be fascinating to know if the creators meant something like that originally.

I think they were just piggybacking off of Christianity to get rich. I don't believe that they actually are christian seeing as they erased God from their games as soon as they took off, but I hope they are saved.

A quick note about the Trinity thing, God as Trinity is a foundational piece of evangelical Christian religion (held by Baptists, Catholics, Lutherans, Calvinists, the list goes on). Faiths that dispute this (biggest example, Mormans) are debated to rather be their own faith than just another denomination of Christianity.
What you out forth was respectful and well put forth, thanks for covering this! Some CZcamsrs will try to skirt around religious influences to be more PC, but just land themselves in bigger trouble for revisionist story telling

The Legend of Zelda cartoon, which aired on Fridays in place of the usual Mario episodes on "The Super Mario Bros. Super Show" debuted in 1989, not 1998. The cartoon was the first to assign an individual crystalline color pattern and a form of sentience to the pieces of the Triforce. The Triforce of Wisdom was originally green in color and spoke to Zelda with a female voice. The Triforce of Power was red in color and spoke to Ganon in a male voice. The show was primarily based on the first game with some things from the second game sprinkled in here and there, mostly in the form of some creatures appearing such as "Deeler" spiders, "Lowder" beetles, "Moby" birds, etc. It did not tackle anything in regards to the possible existence of a third piece of the Triforce. A few years later, these incarnations of Link and Zelda made a few guest appearances in the "Captain N: The Game Master" cartoon. Wherein, some time had passed... Link and Zelda had grown into young adults, Link gad defeated Ganon, and eventually found and reclaimed the Triforce of Courage for the Kingdom of Hyrule. In its appearances, the pieces of the Triforce changed from being glowing pieces that floated upside-down to solid gold-colored triangles with colored embellishments and a stylized letter to help identify & differentiate them from one another. Wisdom remained green but now had a "W" on it. Power remained red and had a "P" on it. Courage was presented with an almost royal blue color and a "C" on it. The Triforce pieces rested in their more appropriate upright positions and voices were gone as well! In the throne room of Hyrule's North Castle, banners hanging from the walls displayed the three-in-one symbol that we are now all-too-familiar with. Not too long after that came the Super Famicom/SuperN.E.S. game "Triforce of the Gods"/"A Link to the Past". As you had stated, this was the first time in-game that we see the three golden triangles come together to form the whole. The Triforce itself showed no association with any of its three aspects with an individual color. However, the game did feature key items that the hero had to acquire in order to progress in the story/his quest to save the princess and the land from the grasp of evil. I am of course speaking of the three Pendants of Virtue: Power, Wisdom, and Courage. One pendant bore a red gem, one a green gem, and one a blue gem. I don't recall exactly which one matched up to which aspect of the Triforce in the original release of the game, but it was not a 100% match to the association from the cartoons. Perhaps that was where Nintendo drew their inspiration for color attribution!?! Then, along came "Ocarina of Time" in 1998. It took that concept of color association and cemented it into in-game/in-universe lore from then on out! Only this time, the color green became linked to the element of forest via the Kokiri Emerald. Blue became linked to the element of water via the Zora Sapphire. Red became linked to the element of fire via the Goron Ruby. Furthermore, the color green became linked to the Golden Goddess Farore, who was associated with the Triforce of Courage. Blue became linked to the Golden Goddess Nayru, who was associated with the Triforce of Wisdom. Red became linked to the Golden Goddess Din, who was associated with the Triforce of Power. The magic spells "Farore's Wind", "Nayru's Love", and "Din's Fire", were also cast with an energy signature that matched the aforementioned color associations. Strangely though, it begs the question: What was the connection between the elements of wind and forest? What could be the connection between Love and Wisdom? Why was Din's spell the only one to maintain a connection with the element of fire? Post-Ocarina of Time, re-releases of "A Link to the Past" saw the Pendants of Virtue recolored to match up to what OoT established. Heck, even the DVD boxed set of the Legend of Zelda cartoon had the Triforce of Wisdom digitally altered from green to blue! Weirder still, I began to notice this trend (if you will) carrying over into other media franchises!?! For example the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy of movies. I noticed that the Jedi master Qui-Gon Jinn wielded a blue lightsaber, which made sense as he was a wise and experienced teacher. His Padawan learner Obi-Wan Kenobi wielded a green lightsaber, which made sense in that he was extremely courageous, if not somewhat young and reckless. The Sith warrior Darth Maul wielded a red lightsaber, which made sense because the Sith were all about a lust for power. In the 2003-2004 limited-to-Japan live-action series "Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon", each of the Sailor Senshi is given an introductory phrase that informed the enemy of who they were dealing with, a sort of battle taunt if you will, which was new to each of them. Everyone who knew anything about the Sailor Moon franchise knew that Usagi's signature color was pink and that she claimed the title of "Soldier of Love and Justice". However (in this far-too-short-lived series) Sailor Mercury, whose signature color is blue, proclaimed herself as "The Soldier of Water and Wisdom". Sailor Mars, whose signature color was red, proclaimed herself as "The Soldier of Flame (Fire) and Passion". Sailor Jupiter, whose signature color was green, proclaimed herself as "The Soldier of Thunder and Courage".

@Monster Maze I don't know if you have a specific place for theory ideas, so the comments section of your most recent video it is. If I had the skills, equipment, and know-how, I'd make the video myself, but instead I turn to you.
In the last Direct, we got a trailer for the second DLC pack for Age of Calamity.
    We saw Sooga.
The appearance of the six Astor clones makes timeline shenanigans likely, but I was discussing this with OrdjE in the Maze server, and he said some things that made me think.
From the cutscenes where Astor turns on the Yiga and the one where Kohga joins forces with Zelda, it appears that Astor and his puppet(s) killed Sooga. The loss of his right-hand man and a number of his soldiers at the hand of Calamity Ganon's "spokesman" makes sense as a reason for Kohga to turn against the Calamity.
However, as OrdjE pointed out, the credits after rebuilding Terrako show Sooga. Why? How? The scenes shown there appear to be the travels of Terrako after being rebuilt, which would mean Sooga DIDN'T die - so where was he? Astor is only shown to have harvested the essence/Malice/whatnot from about 15-20 Yiga Footsoldiers on Hyrule Field. The Yiga Clan appears to be large, so because it's only a few soldiers and it could be seen "for the greater good" (from the perspective of Ganon-worshippers) or the proverbial broken eggs to make an omelet, I can't really see that being a catalyst for the Yiga switching their allegiance; therefore, I hypothesized that Sooga's death - *combined* with the harvesting of the Footsoldiers - would be why Kohga changed his mind. The counterargument OrdjE supplied was that perhaps Sooga was wounded really badly and thus wouldn't have been able to join with the others for the battles ahead, needing to rest and heal (he could have gone to Mipha...). Also, in the trailer, Kohga's posture suggests surprise, but though that could be because the Blights and maybe Astor are back, I feel it has to do with Sooga's return.
So where is the Sooga in the DLC from? Was he restored like monsters in a Blood Moon, his spirit placed back into a fully repaired version of his body? Is he from a different branch of time (potentially BotW's Ruin Timeline, where he hasn't been seen)? Or did he survive Astor's attack?

This is so cool! And kinda comes full-circle for me. I started my business High Caliber Life with the purpose of helping others live an effective life for themselves and those around them. I'm a Christian, and my faith has been a huge influence in my coaching. But the other big influence has been the Zelda series, even for my logo! There's a verse in the Bible that says, "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, of love, and a sound mind." (2 Timothy 1:7) With my Zelda nerdiness that connected back to the power, courage (it takes courage to love well), and wisdom (sound mind). From there I've made my coaching principles: Encourage, Empower, and Enlighten. I could honestly keep going with all the connections between Christianity, Zelda, and the symbolism behind my business' logo, haha... But it's nice to be able to share it with fellow Christians and Zelda fans!!

The magic of The Legend of Zelda series is how it keeps the best of religion embedded in its lore.
Christianity IS STILL a part of the series but buried in the subtext ever since A Link to the Past AKA Triforce of the Gods.
A foreign company in the midst of a then xenophobic panic over Asian/Japanese companies taking over American businesses CANNOT take a risk offending American sensibilities ESPECIALLY when they're selling games to & influencing American children.
You gotta remember that it had only been 40 to 50 years since World War II at that time. Mistrust was heavy in some places.
Not only that though. You also had a satanic panic going on where people were worried about demonic influences on the young.
It was applied to many media forms including music & potentially videogames. That's why USA never got Devil World to this day.
That's why any overt references to devils & demons in Nintendo games were softened or outright masked.
Nintendo's strong policy on religious references on NES/SNES were designed to keep them from getting banned from the country!
To play it extra safe, they began to BURY the religiosity in the SUBTEXT hence the Golden Goddesses representing the Trinity.
And I think that was for the best because now the religion could be used ALLEGORICALLY instead of Directly.
Over time, Zelda began to incorporate many religions in its lore to make a Unique Mix that carries such heavy weight.
Now The Legend of Zelda is Christianity AND Shintoism AND Buddhism AND Taoism AND Islam AND Judaism AND whatever else.
That's why this series feels so profound & speaks to so many people on a spiritual level. That's why it has such reverence.
Burying the religion in the subtext & representing it symbolically & allegorically made everything better than if they kept it like it was.
To some fans, it has already become its own religion which is why people start saying "Oh Hylia" & such in Zelda video comments.
Zelda by part happy accident & part on purpose has become a way to tap into spiritual & metaphysical ideas.
That's why Zelda Theories hits in a way that no other series can ever come close to. Because Zelda is based on real life.

Man.. the magic behind videogames from the late 70's and the 80's... I love, LOVE what is behind the conception of Zelda. Thanks a lot for this enjoyable video. I always though that they got inspired by the Christian triangle. I am from a predominantly Catholic land, and Yahweh is a lot of times represented with a Triangle or a Triangular Halo behind his head in contrast with the circular one on saints and whatnot.

With regards as to WHY the Triforce didn't show up until Zelda II and ALttP, it's possible that Nintendo was still working out the legal issues with using the clan's traditional family crest in their respective games! Once those issues had been sorted out, Nintendo was then allowed to use the symbol prominently in their following Zelda titles, however there may still be some lesser know restrictions regarding how the Triforce can be displayed in game.
