And while Tina was very talented, she was better suited to the character she already had. A fact she later recognized and admitted herself. Sometimes it’s better to take the role you’re best suited for (where you can shine) than to take the bigger role last minute and come off mediocre because it wasn’t a good fit and you were ill prepared for the role.
I stand with Tina on this. She has been waiting for the spotlight for three years, while Santana had already played Anita in West side Story last year. She could have give Rizzo's part to Tina and play Jane.

I feel like a lot of people who watched the show were never actually involved in competitive choir or the performing arts. Tina had already been cast for a role which she was well prepared and better suited for. No one would have bought Santana as Jan, and Tina trying to play Rizzo last minute would have come off mediocre at best. If they had more time for her to prepare I’d say let her try as Rizzo and look for a backup Jan, but it was the night before opening. They didn’t have that kind of time. And frankly, sometimes it’s better to shine as the supporting character than to fumble through one of the leads.
I love the way how when Finn needed someone's help, always goes to Santana, as when he asked her for help to buy some jewel for Rachel. And when Santana knew that Brody was cheating on Rachel, she told it to Finn and he went to New York to hit Brody's face. This gives feelings, as even they fought a lot as brothers cared about each other and were like best friends. ⭐ 0:13

Imagine hearing that the girl who got Rizzo dropped the part (I can't exactly remember what happened in that episode) and you think finally I can play Rizzo.
