    It’s fun seeing the Sanderson sisters back together again, their chemistry is still great. But, they really declaw them and make them less of a threat. The tone is a lot more overtly childish and comedic and much lower stakes. What I loved about the original was that it’s a great introductory horror movie for kids. Thackery Binx’s sister is kidnapped (and killed), the jump scare with Sarah in the bed, Winifred using her nail to cut through the window screen. Also strange that they didn’t choose a song that was more spooky related for their big number.
    My Winifred is canonically vindictive and ultimately selfish. The implications of the original movie existing within this world is WILD.

I couldn't remember any of their names, favorite food or color, dreams etc. Nothing about thoses 3 was relatable. I remember Max's flirting with Alisson and Dani's sassyness! It was fun to follow theses 3 chasing the witches, trapping them in the school etc. Plus Binks the cat was a cute sidekick and his relation with Dani was adorable. I remember this trio while the new one has nothing. That's dissapointing 🤨😐

      I agree. There was just something lacking in their characters and their relationship. I think what made the original so impactful was the contrast between Dani and Max, and the Sanderson Sisters as siblings. Even without the new trio being siblings, I just wish that their relationship was more developed. I just didn’t find myself routing for them at all really. The actresses all did a good job with the material they got though.

  • @BeeKee404
    @BeeKee404 Před rokem +37

    OK. I have some thoughts about the sequel. This will be long so apologies in advance. I feel like especially after some advice I heard, to really enjoy the sequel, you have to look at it as not so much an actual sequel but more as an homage to the first film which I can see with the way they brought back Sarah's "amuk amuk amuk" line, the costume contest, the flashbacks, etc and also how they make the witches more sympathetic. With that in mind, I actually had a lot of fun watching this movie. Loved seeing them reprise their roles.
    I will say though that I am really disappointed they didn't bring back the original kids. I would've loved to see them as adults. I think I heard Thora Birch who plays Dani was going to come back but couldn't due to scheduling.
    I was actually pleasantly surprised by the three teens performances. I know you saw them as boring which I can kinda agree with but I actually also thought they did a decent job and I didn't find them as cringey as I thought I was going to. I will say though that I wasn't a huge fan of the main girl being a witch. Just seemed very random.
    Also personally, I did get the vibe from the first movie that Winnie did care about her sisters. Just not in an obvious way but more in a "you're annoying and stupid but I still love you" sort of way so it didn't seem too far fetched that she showed care for them in this movie. Like when she tried to suck Max's soul for herself, I saw it as more "I'm desperate so I need to what I can since it's almost sunrise and I'm on hollow ground."

    I'm glad it wasn't as cringey (in my opinion) as I was expecting to be, I was sceptical before I watched it at first. And I do love the songs choices, the witches killed it! It was very comforting to see these 3 amazing witches come back!

    You can be evil and still want love in my personal opinion. Plus its not as if they were trying to redeem the sisters, they are without a doubt still evil, children murdering, sadistic people they were in the original. Edited in comments
    The jump to singing into the woods is how I felt. Best part of this movie was young Winnie. Cheering on the one friend for landing a himbo was a mood.
    This movie felt like a Disney Channel original movie. It's banking so hard on nostalgia and I don't even remember any of the added character names.
    And if I had to guess why Winnie's song was changed, it's probably because after 30 years, Bette Midler's voice isn't as high as it used to be. If you look up her singing I Put a Spell on You in concert, she has to lower the song quite significantly, so it's understandable. But they picked an AWFUL song.
    On the subject of returning cast, they ONLY reached out to Thora Birch who played Dani but by the time production started they had gone a different direction and didn't want to wait for her because she had started filming something else. If you see her talk about it in interviews, she's FUMING while trying to keep a straight face.

    Personally, I like the humanization of villains as long as it doesn’t drift into redemption for characters that simply shouldn’t be redeemed and I think this had the potential to do that, but didn’t commit. I think having the others rebel against Winnie when they got power and showing how much they had changed from 3 sisters who just wanted to stay together to 3 colleagues who resent each other but stay together bc they have to in order to keep their power and they’ll do anything to keep it, including hurting kids like they were when all this started, I think an arc like that could’ve been really good. Like basically, show the resentment building throughout the movie where it’s like through collecting these ingredients and facing their past, the others realize that Winnie doesn’t respect them anymore. Like, even if she was rude to them as kids, it was different. Less. And now she doesn’t pull punches anymore. She blames everything on them even tho she’s made just as many mistakes as they have, if not more. And by the end of the movie, when they complete the power spell and are all finally on the same magical level, they fight each other and maybe Winnie straight up kills one of them (likely Sarah bc she’s the youngest and it would probably hit the hardest to see someone kill their baby sister) and thats when she starts to feel regret for real. And then maybe Mary gives too much trying to bring Sarah back even after she’s exhausted from battling Winnie and she dies too. And now Winnie’s like really feeling like shit and she starts literally tearing everything apart in her grief, like apocalypse vibes, earthquakes and storm clouds and sink holes and stuff, and Becca and them have to do the unification spell to stop her and when they finish it, she loses her powers and is still raging, trying to physically attack them and screaming at them “what have you done??” But then they explain, and we see her go through a dozen emotions until finally, she settles into bittersweet resignation and basically just goes “when I discovered my power, I only wanted them so that I could stay with my sisters. I don’t know when I forgot that... so, If losing that power is what it takes to return me to them, so be it.” And then like a quick threat to Cassie of like, you’d better hope no one else finds a way to bring me back bc the next time, I won’t need you alive and revenge and all that. I think this sort of story line, with a much more true to the original, spooky tone AND NO RANDOM FORGIVENESS FOR A GROWN MAN WHO TRICKED TEENAGE GIRLS (about whose s*x lives he had been making guesses) INTO REVIVING HOMICIDAL KID-KILLERS RIGHT NEXT TO THEMSELVES!!!! Like, say w/e you want bro, but that’s at least reckless endangerment if not attempted murder. I absolutely hated that plot line and would’ve much rather seen someone who actually made sense being the sisters back. Like, maybe have their witch mom from the beginning show up and do it! Or at the very least have the person doing it genuinely AND REASONABLY believe that the sisters were innocent bc of stigmas against witches back then and the actual reasons that women were accused of cannibalism esp of babies in actual witch hunts throughout history (it was bc they were helping folks stop being pregnant and that’s how they explained away the potions and disappearing fetuses), bc I mean yeah, it isn’t great stigmatizing witches bc there are actual ppl who may be culturally offended by that and bc the ppl accused of being witches back when all these tropes started were innocent and persecuted, so yeah. Anyway, super long winded, but basically would’ve been better if they didn’t try a half-hearted redemption arc and also leave one villain completely unaffected and facing zero consequences

Ive been having issues logging into D+ lately so i haven't seen this yet but I watched a lengthy reaction on it a few nights ago and it looks pretty good. I remember back when I first found out they were goingnto make a sequel and they were talking about possibly making it a D+ series and without the original 3 main actresses. I was disgusted when I heard that and I'm guessing they scrapped that idea as soon as all the fan backlash hit them. Thank God for that! I bought the book a couple years ago on sale at Target but only started reading it, like I'm just a couple chapters in. Idk why but for the last couplenof years whenever I try to read I tend to fall asleep. And it sucks cuz I've always loved reading for my entire life 😔 The sisters look really amazing considering 30 years have passed. I'm kind of surprised they didn't wait till next year to release it so it would literally be on the 30th anniversary. Wow. Sarah looks basically the same. I wanted to be her so bad when I was a kid lol
    Wait, isn't that the same classroom Max and Allison were in at the start of the original film? Looks like it might be, I'll have to check up on that. I also am disappointed in the CGI Book. Idk why they couldn't just keep it like the original, or maybe just CGI the eye....? I'm really happy they included Billy in this and it's Doug Jones. He's amazing and the character is weirdly hot lol Anyway, I'm gonna shut up and concentrate on the video, thanks for uploading this! Happy Halloween, chica! 🧡🦇🕸🕷👻🎃🖤

    Since the understanding of witches and magic has envolved from 1993 till' now i was ok with the shift in the story, more than making the villain simpatetic they show the backstory in there motivations but didn't changed them, more particulary Winnifred. The same happened with the use of magic since the modern concept as it's used in films and series is that every magic comes with a prize, that why the book didn't want to show her the spell, the powerful the spell the big is the sacrifice.

    Them seeking revenge on the Traske family being made the whole focus just feels so stupid.
    Partly cause it makes almost no sense cause if Winnifred hates them so much, she was literally killing kids and even killed Billy who we find out she killed just cause he didn't like her, yet she all she apparently did was set reverend Traske's house on fire it's kind of out of character that someone like her wouldn't have killed him & his entire family wiping out his lineage.
    Also got to love how lazy they were at keeping continuity with stuff like how the Sanderson house is now in the middle of town apparently with other buildings around it, or how a flashback of the first movie's finale shows a cemetery that is almost completely devoid of trees.

    • @SophiaPhannn
      @SophiaPhannn  Před rokem

      Winifred mentioned that they were too young and weak to kill the family, so that's probably why she only set their house on fire. But when they got older and powerful, they totally could've went back and wiped out the entire family 😂

    I thought the sequel was cute but you do have a point. Winifred didn't seem to care for Sarah or Mary in the last movie so it was kind of a retcon. Apparently deep down she did care for them and wanted them all to succeed as a family, according to this movie. I thought it was sweet but that's definitely not what I expected from Hocus Pocus 2 lol

    Liked that they went with everyone's theories about the girl being a good which and ran with that but honestly its one of the few things I liked. Billy didn't need brought back, the Thackeray bit didn't need to happen, the modern day stuff was hit or miss for me. Lotion potions - yay. Riding the roombas - nay. And the ending was really rushed. IMO they should have let her stew over the death of her sisters longer. Had her try to prevail by herself, realize she can't or even if she could (being all powerful and all) realizing its nothing without them.

I don’t know if anyone noticed that Mary’s frowned lip was flipped to the other side from the first one, it kept bugging me throughout the entire movie.
