Mortica and Gomez being in love aligns with the original commentary the original creator was aiming at with the comics. The Addams were supposed to be the opposite to the average American family, weird, gothic, but loving and happy! Not trapped in conformity and a miserable nuclear dynamic
I've heard it argued that, in the binary of 60s spooky shows of 'Addams Family vs. Munsters', Addams is superior simply because the title family is proud to be themselves, whereas the Munsters take a more Burton-esque approach in being _apologetically_ weird, and actually WANT to fit in. Haven't watched the 60s shows, but sounds plausible enough.
In the show, Gomez usually gets really lucky with investments that make him wealthy. He bought a swamp one time and accidentally found tons of oil in it. And they just have a bunch of businesses around the globe, like a tombstone factory, a uranium mine, etc.
that and he did start with a pirates treasure from one of his ancestors
I'd say a tombstone company might be lucrative if not steady, unless someone discovers the secret of immortality tombstones will always be in demand.
Gomez Addams is one of the top 10 wealthiest fictional characters in all of literature, right up there with Scrooge and Bruce Wayne. Some of that money was indeed family money, but most of it came from Gomez’s investments. Gomez Addams is a financial genius, everything he touches turns to gold, and he always makes the oddest investments. He once bought a swamp that no one wanted and discovered an untapped oil reservoir. He owns a crocodile farm he named Crocodiles Unlimited. That’s where the wealth comes from.
Honestly they’re such a cute couple, they’re both passionate, attentive parents and they look after each other’s needs and listen to each other - I straight up told my bf “if we aren’t like that when we’re married, I don’t want it” and he agreed 😂😂 he’s saving up for an engagement ring
Oooooh 👀💍
Congratulations. My boyfriend has never seen The Addams Family but he and I are passionate like that with each other. We listen to each other and make each other feel loved. We plan to do the same with our kids. We've been together 1 year and almost 7 months and we're both only 20 but I wish we could get engaged. I wish I could marry him as soon as possible. But we need money and if we get married then we want our first kid immediately and we aren't ready for that now. I just hope he proposes by our 3 year mark. Otherwise I will have some thinking to do. Cause I want commitment and a family.
@@truthseeker9249 ...but why must he be the one to propose?
@@tracy4290 That's what we agreed on. I can't speak for his thought process but that's just what I want. I want him to propose. Though I think if I was in love with a woman I would want to propose. Why it's not the same for both I don't know but it's just my preference.
Congratulations
RIP, Raul Julia. 1940-1994.He was perfect as Gomez Addams. He died during filming his last film, Street Fighter.
Before the credits rolled it had this:
"For Raul. Vaya Con Dios."
He was seriously ill during production of Addams Family Values.
Omg I didn't know he was sick :(
...And tonight, Raul Julia, we dance the Mamushka for you... :(
I've never gotten around to watching him in any roles outside of M. Bison and Gomez Addams. Any films you'd recommend with him?
@@christopherb501 Romero and Kiss of the Spider Woman
"As if she doesn't want that kiss"
Honestly I thought it was completely on brand and raunchy humor. She want's the kiss...exactly where she guided him.
15:50 Funny what you said about them sending the kids to school. In the black and white sitcom, they didn't send the kids to school cause they argued why get kids only to get rid of them. And when they do send Wednesday and Pugsley to school, they end up complaining to the school cause Wednesday came home crying after the teacher read them classic fairy tales. She cried about a poor dragon getting slain, and a poor old witch getting burned alive. Hansel and Gretel are delinquents! 🤣
Ill liked it when Gomaz said see ya. when she turns 22 !!lol
Fun fact Christina Ricci went to the casting call for her brother because he auditioned for Pugsley and the casting directors loved her so much they cast her as Wednesday.
15:56 Well in the 60s tv series Gomez was initially against sending them to school because "why have children only to get rid of them" and when pointed out that while 6 year old Wednesday can already breed thoroughbred spider s (she's a bit more of a perky goth in the tv show but still very memorable, she's also the younger sibling) at school she'd learn how to read Gomez pointed out "What is there for a 6 year old to read?" "Well someday she'll be 26" "See you then". Ultimately though Morticia felt it would be better if the children were given the chance to play with other children their age. They nearly pulled them out of school after 1 day after they found out that the school was encouraging violence by giving the children storybooks where knights in shining armour kill "poor defenceless dragons"
The dragon line was so funny.
“Daddy they killed it!”
Gomes laughed and said “killed who”
And only gets concerned when it turns out it was a dragon. And got outraged by Hansel and Gretel 😂
You know, her falling for Cousin It pretty much after one night really says something about how shitty her marriage and husband were lol.
It is lovely and I'm not just saying that cuz I had hair down to my knees as a child (same color too) and did a great impression of him
They're not only passionate, but also the most gracious of hosts. They strive to make any visitor feel welcomed and appreciated, and included in family gatherings.
We all wanna be like Morticia and Gomez but lowkey we're all Fester in the second movie 😔😔😔😔
LOOOOOL I've never been so down bad for someone like that but I can see it for others 🤭
You can watch the Adam's Family any time.
These characters always makes me smile, and I love how devoted the two are to one another.
In the Adams universe the wealth is explained through Gomez being a "savvy investor" well actually he's just lucky he invests money in something odd for no reason and out of nowhere that industry starts thriving and he ends up making tons of money.
Wish that was me, all my stocks are red 😭
@@SophiaPhannn 🤣🤣
About the beginning: I don't think they hate Christmas. They just don't like uninvited guests, so they're basically, in their minds, defending their castle from an invading force.
19:05 Cousin Itt is an extremely charming and interesting man. Plus he's very attentive when he talks to you - and he's so cultured and talented as well
from the creators notes. the wealth is inherited, but also gomez is extremely lucky in the stock market. he just keeps adding to their wealth. also THE ADDAMS ARE NOT EVIL.
Gomes should invest in bitcoin.
@@amandategner1314 it would probably workout for him.
Most of Gomez’s money is made via investments that he makes on a whim and lucks out on. There are times he’s disappointed that he didn’t lose money.
I believe his entire goal was to become a bankrupt failure like his family and invested in things he was sure would fail, but he just kept getting lucky with his investments (or unlucky I suppose)
@@Papanda1995 yep! He wanted to fail but kept succeeding. But he didn’t let it discourage him.
God I love these movies. Literally THE perfect casting, Raul Julia and Angelica Houston ARE Gomez & Morticia.
The clock is actually showing Gomez biting Morticias neck like a vampire, there was a similar one in the show but this one is showing Gomez biting her neck over and over to count the three strikes at the beginning of the hour, she is leaning back to accept being bitten not cause she doesn’t want him.
I didnt think she was being bitten! I always thought he was just kissing her chest 😏 😂
@@CrisApplesauce I know right! I think that was the point with this movie tho, they wanted people to leave it to the mind to guess what they are doing in the clock. It’s genius and the details really bring you into their world. I love it!
I also thought the clock was getting some titty action
@@CrisApplesauce Yeah, that head wasn't going into her neck... lol
He wasn't biting her neck, he was motorboating her tits. Her neck was nowhere near his face.
The original comic strip by Charles Addams was actually about them being stuffy old money creeps (based on his own family), who were so detachted because of that. Thee ooky spooky aspect was then exaggerated for the 60s tv show.
The Addams Family is my absolute favourite movie! From the family bond, to Morticia and Gomez, just perfect. Anjelica Huston will always be the best Morticia, no one can compete with her cheekbones
I'll be interested to see how Catherine Zeta Jones does in the upcoming series, she certainly looks the part
I mean, Lurch is putting up a pretty good fight for Best Cheekbones...
@@afoolishfopdoodle3284 lurch's cheeks don't have their own spotlight though 💅🏼
Darn right they’re goals. They were pretty much made for each other!
It think one of the only other pieces of media I’ve seen the ‘married couple hates eachother’ trope subverted is the ‘my babysitters a vampire’ series from disney? The movie and the show have the parents constantly going on dates, obviously not as iconic as our duo here but it’s refreshing! Loved the commentary as usual sophia!
Glad you enjoyed it!! 🥰
I never got that trope and I hate it so much because they are just making the show or movie awkward in a real way. That's why I don't like Family Guy anymore because Peter and Lois are just unlikeable and just hate each other no matter how many times they apologize. If a show or movie has that stupid, "Married couple that hates each other for no reason other than they were married for a long time" I immediately hate it, because divorce is a thing people, that relationship is gone...sorry his turned into a rant but I just hate that because who wants to watch a straight married couple bicker and stay together for the whole movie and then apologize to each other like that's gonna solve everything we've seen...
@@bluewolf6323 completely agreed !
I love this series so much. It was a big part of my childhood. The second is so iconic and I still feel like Joan Crawford was not given enough praise for her role as Debbie. And Morticia and Gomez are forever couple goals for me.
Also, my mom's boyfriend looks like fester but he's an actual creep lol
If only he had Fester's personality 💀
Joan Cusack plays Debbie. Funny you should mention Joan Crawford though cause lately I've been really invested in her story after coming across the movie Mommie Dearest. Sorry. Just felt like sharing lol
@@BeeKee404 Meant Cusack, my bad!! had a Monday moment there but she was always one of my favorite actresses because of this and School of Rock
@@bella-mccord No worries! I have those moments all the time lol Yeah Cusack's great! I love her in this and also as Jessie in the Toy Story films and also a few other stuff as well.
@@BeeKee404 Oh my gosh, YES! And runaway bride. Such an underrated actress.
16:28 So glad to see Wednesday's parents appreciate the importance of education. I'm hoping Wednesday will major in drama, she has a natural stage presence
Morticia & Gomez 🤝🏼 Bob & Linda
Marriage goals ❤️❤️✨
i’m pretty sure christina ricci was only 10 in this, she’s incredible
I love Christina’s version of Wednesday ❤
I’m also really happy she will be in the new Wednesday Addams series.
Omg I didn't know that!! I will be seated 🍿
@@SophiaPhannn yes, it's gonna be on Netflix pretty soon and its directed by Tim Burton.
@@HelloXrancidkitteh oh no. he's kinda dropped off D: I was excited about it until you revealed this information
Pretty sure the Addams have so much money is because of how eclectic and devoted the family is to each other. Despite being unwanted in high social circles, they still participate in them. They also don't really give a shit about money, so a lot of it are from risky investments that they lucked out on (stocks and bonds), unwanted property deeds that became lucrative all over the world, gold bullion in the vault (some of the Addams clan used to be pirates, swindlers, gamblers etc), and possibly ancient bribes and blackmail hoping to drive them out from countries all over the world.
The fact that their family is still huge in number (they seem pretty indestructible for human standards) and strongly attached to the family means more money will come in from every weirdo all over the glove that identifies as an Addams for decades to come.
The sequel is one of my all time favs! Although no one will beat Christina Ricci's Wednesday, I'm still really looking forward to Tim Burton's take on the iconic macabre family.
When she mentioned something dark with Christmas I couldn't help but think about Krampus, Wednesday must be waiting to see Krampus every year >♡
So much of this delves into the original material, the original magazine cartoons and the TV series development. All of the characters had a particular look. Gomez in the cartoons was squatter and creepier-looking, but Raul was perfect because of his eyes. Even many of the original cartoon jokes wound up in this script ("Are you happy, darling?" "Yes. Yes, completely!")
No explanation where their wealth came from, but Gomez, whose development is largely thanks to actor John Astin (Sean Astin's step-dad) was an active businessman, constantly reading stocks and throwing around money. He established Gomez as super passionate, kissing his wife's arm every time she spoke French, and being deeply in love with his wife. The result was the most openly physically romantic couple on TV at the time (not as much heavy breathing though).
Many of their eccentricities here were present in the TV series. Morticia clipped the tops off roses, in between feeding meat to her man-eating plants. Gomez was an active swordsman and loved to crash his toy trains. Fester often entertained the children by putting light bulbs in his mouth. Grandmama flung knives.
Lurch was a more important character in the TV series, due to the actor Ted Cassidy. His groaning is iconic. One of the most famous episodes includes a scene with little Wednesday trying to teach Lurch how to dance.
Some backstory is different, but I'm not sure if it was completely consistent in the TV series anyway. In many episodes, Uncle Fester seems to be the children's uncle, but in other episodes he's Morticia's uncle.
The Addams family sets an unreasonable standard for family unity. And I'm not saying that to be obtuse, I really think they set a standard that is tough to follow because they are immortal, therefor making it impossible for them to truly connect with the community they live in.
Tish and Gomez love each other to death, yeah, but think about the family dynamic in general. They have almost no political association outside of their own family values (rim-shot), no axe to grind with any person or group or entity. They are obscenely wealthy and therefore want for nothing, beyond engaging with each other in some kind of edgy discourse or activity. Even the kids get along in a way that is enviable. They don't hate or even really dislike each other...how could they, when they are both functionally un-killable?
The Addams are undying wealthy indifference personified. They can't related to (and often irritate) their neighbors, they seem strange and almost alien to those who encounter them directly and they are immune to most forms of antagonism. They CAN expand their influence by expanding their family and inviting new members to join (such as Margaret becoming Cousin It's wife and starting a family with him) but they remain apart. They like it that way, but since they cannot die and rarely suffer from any permanent financial/social setback, they remain the gleeful, undaunted, implacable "other" that makes all other families seem insincere and vapid by comparison. As fun as it is to watch them get the better of those we clearly find inferior, single minded and jealous of their happiness, in reality, if we knew a family like the Addams in real life, we'd probably secretly hate them. It's a fun little escapist fantasy thought. 😅
I can't wait for the pageant scene from the second film. Also what do you think about "Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey"? Another good film with Thanksgiving vibes. Great Vid!
I've actually never seen that movie 😅
Are they immortal? I never got that impression. They can't necessarily be killed in the same ways that normal people can, but their whole yard is full of Addamses who died in fun and unique ways.
Also, I find their political and social indifference to be even more aspirational than their sexy marriage.
i could immediately tell you were going for a Morticia look so i would say it worked well lol
When you and your partner love each other the way Gomez and Morticia do, you know it's real.
Fester with hair probably isn't the freakiest Christopher Lloyd looked in a movie.
Just give him a small tuft of white hair, cartoon red eyes and a high pitched voice and I think you know who I'm talking about.
Also, that thing you said about who hired Thing. I'm sure there's a joke somewhere about how he's a...hired hand! :D
LOOOOL in Who Framed Roger Rabbit, I actually didn't get scared of Doom for some reason
@@SophiaPhannn Well, I saw that movie when it first came out. I was three years old. And seeing it on a big screen definitely scarred me for life. I'm fine with it now but for a long time I could only watch MOST of that movie because of that scene...well, that and the bit with the shoe.
Funny thing though. I did actually recognize it as the same actor when seeing the poster for Addams Family. Christopher Lloyd just has that kind of face.
Doom SCARED ME
I wonder if she hadn't clipped the roses and just let them die and become brown, if Morticia would just keep them on the bush instead of deadheading them. But yeah, Fester with hair looks kind of like Beetlejuice to me. Whenever my family gets Girl Scout cookies, I always quote, "Are they made from real Girl Scouts?"
If i remember corewctly, she clips the Roses because gomez is actually allergic to them, so its another weirdly sweet thing she does for him
@@klaraondryskova7985 Aww! That's so cute!
Morticha was my first crush as a kid and definitely explains the kinks I have now 😂
The 2nd movie is a must watch, it is one of those rare sequels that is even better than the first.
In the 60’s sitcom the Addams actually enjoyed celebrating Christmas. And not some weird off-shoot like full on Christmas with a tree and Santa and everything.
Fun fact: The girls scout is Harmony from Buffy the Vampire Slayer
She's also in the second movie playing a rich camp kid. I forgot her name. I still don't know if she's meant to be the same character or not.
i love these two movies 💜💜🤌🤌 Christina Ricci as Wednesday Adams is gold 🖤🖤
Get well soon!! As someone who also experienced COVID this year, I understood how movies can cope your sickness.
I'm all healed now tyty 🥰
My biggest question I always had with this movie and the sequel is what happens to Tully and Margaret's son after she marries Cousin It? Also a couch tombstone is kind of iconic.
He joined a paleontology dig in Montana where he was traumatized by Sam Neill!
@@christineirving4491pluviophile lmao very true.
I had to kind of retcon it that he wasn't their son, but their nephew...
There is an octopus on the bed because they had a pet octopus named Aristotle in the show.
Many of the quick scenes in this movie were based on the original one-frame comics by Chas. Addams. In fact, that opening scene, pouring boiling oil on the carolers is arguable one of his most well-known drawings.
Not well known is that the brother Pugsley is played by the older brother of Ariel Winter who played Alex Dunphy in Modern Family.
THE INTRO IS GIVING EVERYTHING LMFAOOOO
21:22 I never thought of that til now, lol. But I read a similar quote (that nearly brought me to tears lol),
"At some point in your childhood, you and your friends went outside to play together for the last time, and nobody knew it."
Wonderful review! Please watch Cinema Therapy's video about a therapist who uses Morticia & Gomez's relationship to show that yes, they do have a beautiful relationship worthy to emulate!
This couple own my heart and I love it and I love this movie it’s safe and happy and kind and idc about anyone else’s opinion on this movie because it’s perfect
Maybe instead of Santa they want his polar opposite Krampus to visit them
Omg you're right
S'ok, Sophia: If you ain't got a man that wants you like Gomez wants Morticia, you don't want that anyway ;)
You're so right, gotta keep my standards high ☝️
Morticia and Gomez are absolutely couple's goals... but Wednesday is my spirit animal lol.
Sisiw is a Filipino snack that is chicken intestines barbecued on a stick. Around the world, people eat liver. Haggis is sheep stomach filled with other foods. So, yes, Morticia is quite cultured. 👌
There is a fantastic queer reading to this film, more-so in the sequel. The latter was confirmed by the writer, who was brought on late for the first film to do rewrites. Fester in this one, however, is a man without a loving family because of how different he is from ‘normal’ society. Being an Addams in this case is being loved for who you are. To be truly accepted for things that close-minded people shun you for.
I've watched this move dozens of times and I never picked up that gomez playing with trains when he's stressed is a normal dad thing to do 🤣
I don't know if you know this (I was waiting for you to bring it up) but the girl selling Girl Scout cookies shows up in the second movie and plays Amanda, the "it" girl who bullies Wednesday and Pugsly and gets the main part in the play!
Nice to see you preparing for Netflix's 'Wednesday' TV series.
1:04 I love how no one talks about the new-ish animated ones 😂😂 let us all continue to forget that those 2 movies exist 👍🏾
Gomez Addams is originally a Lawyer. In the original comic. Although he rarely practices, he boasts of having put many criminals behind bars while acting as their defense attorney. In the original TV show, he is the executor of the Addams family estate. Also Debbie mention a gold mine, so they certainly have that too.
Oh man, I LOVE The Addams Family. So happy you did this movie! Not even just this movie. I love the sequel, the 1960s series, I even like the 2019 animated movie. The follow up to that movie was OK but I didn't like it as much. I also love The New Addams Family series which is a 90s version of the 1960s series. Not a lot of people like it but I personally really enjoy it. I feel like both versions have what the other doesn't if that makes sense. The one Addams Family production I cannot bring myself to watch is The Addams Family Reunion.
Anyways, looking forward to your Addams Family Values video! Hope you can get around to watching the classic series on your own time or for a video! I highly recommend the series! Both the 1960s series and the 90s series!
Addams Family Values is a perfect movie, I think. So I'll be looking forward to that one
The first movie is alright. The cast and the production design are perfect, but the writing lets it down a bit. It's okay.
A nightmare before Christmas should be up your alley
i love that Thing isn’t treated like a pet. Thing treated like a person, because, Thing is not a pet.
I loveee the Addams family movies so I'm excited for you to do the sequel as well!
22:11 Thar's such a lovely pendant! I love the green-and-silver.
Canonically from comics and original media Gomez Addams is descended from Castilian royalty, thereby inheriting a large sum of money to provide to the Addams family net worth. From there he made alot of investments which grew it further
Adams Family Values is 100% a Thanksgiving movie, tho.
YES THEY ARE COUPLE GOALS! Gay, straight, non-binaries... they are couple goals!!!!
I adore every video of yours I get to watch. This movie I think I prefer to the sequel but it's a very close race. Like 55-45% instead of 50-50%. I don't think the casting could have been more perfect for this or the Clue film. Honestly they're all great ensemble casts.
The 'kiss' isn't a kiss. She's leaning back so he can motorboat her. It's love.
you should watch at least one episode of the original it's cute and Gomez and Morticia are just as adorable.
For the Money of addams family, it's explained by many things : 1- We know gomez got a salt mine, buzzard farm, tombstone factory & stock in insurance company. Others family members are shown to be way less poor except cousin itt that we knew very little about. Gomez share a part of his stock with Uncle feister to protect him from bein poor. Morticia is native of a noble family which help her
I am a big fan of the Addams Family TV series growing up. I watched the reruns. This movie and the sequel did the best job of capturing the essence of the series.
Watching your reactions makes me appreciate these films even more. I forgot how great Addams Family is (even though I love it and watch it whenever I can)
I love this movie so much!
Something dark about Christmas is that there is a legend called krampus and basically he takes naughty kids away from his parents
Fun fact: the reason Morticia cuts the heads off the roses is because Gomez is allergic to roses.
I think Morticia's figurine leans back so that Gomes' kisses her breasts lol
The clock is actually showing Gomez biting Morticias neck like a vampire. there was a similar one in the show. this one is showing Gomez biting her neck over and over to count the three strikes of the beginning of the hour, she is leaning back to accept being bitten not cause she doesn’t want him.
This movie was a classic since the TV show
Much of their wealth is due to the business activities of Gomez Addams. The character is portrayed as being heavily invested in Wall Street, and owning multiple businesses around the world. This includes a uranium mine, an exotic animal farm, a salt mine, and even a factory that manufactures tombstones.
Granny could have been replaced 😅 Carol Kane is fantastic as Granny in the sequel.
I love your videos ! They are so fun!!!
I dunno about the old TV show, but based on the "dubloons" they have in THIS movie, I always kind of assumed some past generation of Addamses were pirates, and that's where they got all that loot from lol.
Not me being a simp for Raúl Juliá even know he died 4 years before I was born.
