Im a DV survivor and honestly its not that he joked about DV. Its that he flat out says something offensive and not even funny? Like bill burr jokes about dv and it was hilarious to me, because he was telling actual jokes... not just insulting survivors. I dont think sensitive topics should be off limit from jokes but this is not even him telling jokes, there was no humor in it. He said it to be an ass.
He wasn't insulting a survivor though. It's a made-up story and isn't really DV as that strictly happens in the home by family. My interpretation at least was that the hostess was assaulted by an coworker or manager for messing up the food. I got a chuckle out of it, but his special overall just seemed like a lot of anger towards women and it wasn't delivered well. Bill Burr ftw!

An offensive joke is only okay if it's witty and funny, otherwise you're just looking for an excuse to say something you know is controversial, and calling it a joke, when its not. While I am of the mind that if you're doing comedy and you don't offend _someone,_ you're doing it wrong, there are topics, in my opinion, you should never touch. Keep in mind, too, that, yes, people do have freedom of speech, that right does not include freedom from consequences.
Disagree, all topics are free game as long as you don’t have malice intention while making the joke. Dark humour joke are good because it allow or prepare people to discuss a certain topic which could help address the issue of whatever topic.

I think the biggest issue with telling DV or R*pe jokes is knowing your audience. And I say that as a woman who has dealt with both. I am someone who has healed from those events to the extent that I personally do find those dark humor jokes funny 99% of the time. BUT not everyone who has experience DV or R*pe or any of those more serious dark topics, are in the mindspace to find those jokes as humorous. Which is perfectly fine. I don't agree with the way Matt Rife has reacted to this whole situation but I think at the same time I don't agree with the way the internet reacted to the joke. Dark Humor is going to always be Dark Humor, you are either okay with it and can handle hearing those types of jokes, or it still hits a sensitive spot and you cant. Either is fine, just know what side of the scale you land on.
I thought it was funny. Ive been the victim of a few traumatizing events in my life too, but people using these events to identify their persona.. the world is too sensitive. People need to lighten up.
I can't remember which, but I remember a famous comedian once said "If you can't joke about the bad things in life, then there isn't anything to joke about" Which I can get behind. If you cannot turn a bad situation around, then obviously take the time and figure it out. However, if you have to hold on to that negative in such a harsh way, you'll never grow and learn from it.
What seems so asinine to me about it all too is that he could have had a MORE successful career being the hot and charming crowd work guy. Crowd work is treated like a low bar form of comedy but it’s literally one of the hardest things to pull off because it’s all unplanned improv. People would have paid comedy show prices to have drinks and get roasted by him, but he got all greedy and insecure about his talents and felt the need to be more like other comedians.
Even him poking fun at an amputee in his crowd work show was funny, because the amputee went there knowing he does crowd work and that is the bit. It’s totally different to stand up and make cold jokes about DV on Netflix.
The guys should have just leaned into his strengths and been grateful. Now we all know what he really is and will never really see him the same way. Half of his attractiveness was his sweet bad boy thing, now we know 🤷♀️

I'm in an abusive relationship where I experience DV even while i was pregnant both times with his kids, to the day before i went into labour. However, somehow when i sometimes talk to people about it, I can kind of joke about parts of it because of how ridiculous he is and pathetic excuse of a man he is. Feel like making jokes from that sort of angle might work better with people, not that I'm trying to make light of my own situation or anyone else's just that the people who do these things are the joke.
Edit: Also I would never wish the pain and suffering on anyone of having your baby go into NICU after giving birth to then find out they have special needs. Don't think he would make jokes about special needs if he saw how mentally and emotionally painful that journey is for the families and the people with the conditions.

I've def heard worse jokes from lesser known comedians and they got famous for it. I think it's just because he is hot and the ladies loved him and then he wanted to appeal to men a bit more (and we joke about everything, its unfortunate but its true) that they felt a bit insulted. Let me start by saying THIS IS A COMEDY SHOW. If any of you all could have sit-down and watched the full show and not just the half clips you see going around you would understand. To be honest I think people are just too sensitive these days. there was always an option to not watch, some of it was funny and some of it was not.

First of all, a joke is different from a bit. most comedians do bits. and every bit is born with the intention of being funny, and every bit or joke offends someone, so if that is considered, you could never tell any edgy joke because someone in the world will be offended.

Yes, unfortunatly words like that are instantly flagged in most social media these days, and content with the full words (spoken or written) will often get shadowbanned or struggle to be monetized. Doesn't matter if the content itself is just adressing a situation or being flat out offensive - it will get flagged.
I do like dark jokes but if all you do is using shock factor to be relevant you're not funny

Like many people have said, he just pointed something out and wasn’t funny about it. I have experienced both sa and dv and I have laughed at jokes about them and repeated them, because they were funny. This wasn’t funny. He was offensive.
