Rife For Cancellation | Matt Rife | EP 401

- Dr. Jordan B. Peterson sits down in-person with recently “canceled” comedian Matt Rife. They discuss the incident in question, his viral response, the prominence of crowd work in his act, his early career start at the age of 15, the innovative use of social media to build his name, and the real reason he remains unapologetic for having a sense of humor.
Matthew Steven Rife was born in 1995 and is an American stand up comedian and actor. He started early, entering a school talent show at the age of 14 after being encouraged by a friend. Finding this to be a success, he went professional the next year at age 15. Using TikTok, he managed to consistently go viral with his stand up and "red flag" crowd work. He then entered the arena full time, using social media to grow his name before producing three straight-to-CZcams comedy specials from 2021 to 2023. This year, he debuted his first Netflix special, "Natural Selection."
This episode was filmed on November 22, 2023

The professor and the jokester
Well, comics are generally pretty smart and think about all kinds of things, and because humor can often be offensive, because you're making fun of something, often normal human behaviour or odd things or society in general, and live in that, you tend to think more or differently about some things. They both think a lot about people, emotions, humanity, life, etc.
And people not understanding what he says is a joke are just, well, morons. He touches a bit on it when he's talking about timing too, there are places and times you can say horrible things and they're just funny, but often you have to be quick with it, if you take 30 seconds to think of something and then say it instead of within a second, it'll come over waaaaay different. But still, he's doing a show, it's a joke. As soon as you think something is too bad or ridiculous to be true, it probably is, apparently some people are missing that insight.

I love that comedians are just so relaxed in front of Dr. Peterson, they don't feel pressure to match the intellectual atmosphere and just speak to one of the most prominent minds of our generation like a friend, and in turn relaxes Jordan so we can see more whimsical and funny side of him. What a lovely thing to say. Brought a tear to my eye. Wishing you healed and happy years ahead
I just binge watched a bunch of Matt's stand up. He's hilairious. I love that he unapologetically tells his jokes.
He’s good
Me too! 😊😅Big belly laughs!
He's definitely the next big comedian. He started off with viral tiktoks but he's definitely going to be more than just that
I’m LITERALLY watching an hours worth compilation of Matt Rife doing crowd work, and it is frikkin GLORIOUS. I’ve been watching comedians for years - even the ones before my time (80’s and 90’s) - and I genuinely believe Matt is at the top of the food chain.
His crowd work I loved the best was when he told the audience ~ "if you all had brought more black friends this wouldn't have been so awkward for you".
Loved it!!!
Awesome interview.... Matt Rife is pure platinum !
Just came across this young man's comedy recently. The first thing I watched was the red flag special. HILARIOUS!!! Now, I gotta go find the special involving the joke mentioned here. Lol His kind of comedy is a breath of fresh air in this f'd up world. It's great to see a younger generation carrying on real comedy. ❤
Jordan Peterson is such a comedian himself. He really makes me smile. His ability to blend a serious topic and be playful around it is simply remarkable!
He really is. So is Elon. People sleep on both of their comedic timings tbh
He does a really good Jordan Peterson impersonation. He sounds exactly like himself when he talks in this video.
That's true. He does come out with some funny stuff. But he never acknowledges the jokes onstage. I hope Matt gave him some tips on how not to bury the punchline!
For so many years I haven't been subscribed to jp, but now I actually HAD to. The algorithm started filtering you out, I forced it to add more shorts of you. Now, here I am. Thank you jp for everything
He's our Buddha.
This is honestly the most unexpected people to be sitting on a podcast together and I am absolutely loving it
This is the discourse I never knew I needed. Watching 2 intelligent humans with common sense converse has renewed, however temporarily, my faith in humanity. I have a new respect for Rife. I always had a ton of respect for JP.
Appreciated this! Love you both! 🙌
Matt Rife is hilarious and always makes me laugh. Definitely not cancelled in my world. His comedy is in no way mean-spirited, and he’s shown us in many situations he has a very good heart.
Matt keep doing what you’re doing. Your fans will always be there for you!
No one is trying to cancel Matt, his special was just terrible and he's got to pretend it's because he's being "canceled"
@@chrisstubing5859exactly
@chrisstubing5859 bro is one of those smaller orangutan 😅😂
@@chrisstubing5859see that’s the thing.. just cause you think it’s bad doesn’t mean everyone else does.. it’s called an opinion and comedy can be subjective. Also people have definitely tried to cancel him.. it’s definitely a thing 😂
@@chrisstubing5859 You're the omnipotent judge ? Cool. Objective judge or subjective i wonder.
Mad respect to Matt for his handling of the situation
“I wasn’t fishing for compliments but I do appreciate the fact that they emerged” this man’s way with words is impeccable.
I already know Dr. Peterson but just discovered Matt a week ago and the intellectual fusion in this interview is just wonderful!
Thank you Jordan Peterson for being sanity in an insane world. And thank you Matt Rife for not selling out when most would’ve. The world needs more people like you both 🙏🏼
He specifically is selling out. He alienated his audience and now he has to chase the lncel teenager audience by latching himself onto JP's wagon of pandering to that demo. He'll just go all in on the edge-lord "funny because it's offensive" while not being actually funny style of comedy, and transform his brand into being a victim of cancel culture.
Dr. Peterson is the needed father of a fatherless society.
Wow! This comment just hit my soul!💜
Whew. Deep. ❤
How do we bottle this
Dr. Peterson is not an exemplar. And this guy-never heard of him.
Breath of fresh air ...awesome young lad..hope to see much more of him.
Matt Is The Most Witty Person I've Ever Seen...So Real...So True...So Pure...So Original...Amazingly Kind Hearted
I am close to 60 years old and I have seen greats like Fluffy, Richard Pryor, Sam Kinnison, George Carlin, Steve Harvey, Carrot Top, Wanda Sykes , Eddie Murphy and so many others in tv shows, Netlfix etc.. Matt Rife is in my top 3. Very relatable, respects his audience, has a great time and spends time with the audience afterward for pictures or whatever. Why would you want to cancel such awesome entertainment? Good luck Matt!!
The fact that he lives in LA and STILL has a backbone makes me respect him even more. NEVER CHANGE. Matt.
I have been watching Matt for a few months. I have COPD, PTSD and depression. Matt has saved me and brought laughter and I feel so much better and now enjoy life. Thank you Matt for your humor and love to make the people forget about their problems and laugh and bring their endorphins up to speed. You make my day brighter and take a tone of crap off my shoulders ❤️❤️
Great interview! Love you both!
Love both you guys!!! Thank you brothers!!! ❤❤😂
To start, I’m a Sikh, Indian, and my culture is important to me. Thought the past two years I’ve fallen in love with the comedy Matt Rife tells, it’s quick, witty and genuine, he’s not scripted, he’s a true talent. I hope you get to read this. I saw a comedy skit online that he did where he bounced jokes off a Sikh man making terrorists jokes. It was tough to hear at first cause my people have been attacked being called that before. For a moment I was mad with Rife, but then I remembered it’s a joke, he’s a comedian. While the joke is insensitive it was still just a harmless joke and seeing the fellow Indian man who was in the video happy made me happy. I then mentally set myself as if I wasn’t a Sikh and didn’t know the tension of what terrorism is to the Sikh community then I found the joke decent, not his best work but not hurtful to my being. People need to learn to separate their true selves when experiencing comedy. Sorry for a long comment wanted to share how I almost got offended but took the philosophy of not taking comedy at true value to myself as who I am
You have to know yourself and, I think, be ok with who you are to be able to separate who you are from something someone said, without taking it personally. And lemme say this now before I get ahead of myself, I wholeheartedly agree with you, I think it's one of the main reasons why people these days do get so upset over every little thing, is because they have no real values and they don't really stand for one thing or another- literal fence-sitters. So they don't have the ability to separate themselves, they get personally hurt- like, it's being said only to them. You are obviously intelligent enough to see and do this yourself, but sadly most people aren't.
Great job and great reply!!
😀 🙂 😊👏👏👏👏😀
❤️💖🙏🏼😊😘🤗😘🤗🤗🤗💯%!!
💖❤️💖❤️😀😀🙂🤗🤗🤗 MUCH love ❤️ 💖 ❣️
I think you touched on something important which is taking a step back from indignation about your identity. Whether your identity is black, white, female, trans, Sikh, etc, especially as it relates to the field of comedy, obsession about your identity is something that will only hinder the experience of going for the "ride" that is listening to someone else's joke.
This is a great response. Comedy is a show. An act. And to be offended is just a selfish and egotistical. Unless he targets you specificly sure you can feel how you want but be a realistic man or woman and be bigger than that. Who care how you feel because if it's making people laugh you're spreading a good feeling to a crowd to be honest I don't like being targeted about anything that would bring up a negative emotion but it's a show it's meant to be controversial or something that you wouldn't take politely from someone on the street because it's not real it's just like TV it goes to extreme sometimes because we all have intrusive thoughts that we wouldn't act on but when someone can actually turn any scenario especially something negative into laughter then he's doing the job that you paid to go see it has to be expected especially in comedy it's great that you understand this laughter is the second most treasured emotion that you can share with others . And to push past any personal issue that might feel offensive to you is worth it as long as it's making people laugh only the truth matters assumptions are made by the comedian in his joke it's never personal it's for everyone. Right on man it's good to see that someone can actually take a joke
Sensitive Comedy?? What kind of a Sikh* joke is that??
Matt is so real. He's by far besides a talented comedian, just a kind-hearted, intelligent man.
@@mojcam2688Wth what gives you that idea?
Great I was finally able to find this interview subscribed 😎😎👍✌️
Reminds me of the iconoclast between Deepak Chopra & Michael Meyers!
Honestly- deeper than I believed it could be. And as a US midwesterner by birth- I’m so grateful for this in these subjects and acknowledgements are SO VERY needed in these times!
When my young brother was dying of cancer he made funniest and darkest jokes about his situation. He was a warrior with a kind heart but also a MF with the strength to laugh at the absurdity of his situation.
Wow love that
Human Beings...society at large have become odd creatures. Its the abundance of comfort that is afforded to us in this modern era that allows behavior like this.
I'm very sorry for your loss. Your brother sounds like a great guy. All the best to you and to your family. Regards from Finland 🇫🇮 ❤

My grandpa was same
It’s amazing to see how Jordan speaks to Matt and how much of an amazing conversation this is, I’m 27 and I still am surprised when people put down Jordan Peterson based on his misrepresentation by the media. You are an inspiration to us younger people who have open ears and open hearts
Peterson is put down (more whining) because of the stupid shit he says. Calling it media representation is idiotic.
🙏🏽💯
Jordan is a class act. And I feel like you can tell when he likes some one because he becomes more involved speaking in the interview.
Two of some of my most favourite people, TOGETHER!!! Great Show!
I didn't know I needed this thank you both.
I saw the show. I actually suffered domestic violence and I was NOT OFFENDED! It was a joke, and people need to stop being so literally. I loved your show Matt ❤️
Same.
People that get offended by jokes, need therapy or some mental health help.
💯
Me too!!!! (No hashtag) I make fun of my own beatings, what am I gonna do, spend the rest of my life weeping? I'd rather laugh.
I call BS. You are making up a story yo defend Matt. Gross. He won’t sleep with you.
I'm a DV survivor, I saw him perform this live in Des Moines, and I laughed. If you can't laugh at your trauma, you can't get past it.
You think that everone was able to get past it when you did, or is it ok to be shit on for being abused at any time no matter what?
Easy for you to say as a survivor, try saying that to people who lost their children, sisters and friends to disgusting men who killed them in the end.
@@halversonnoel0 Don't like one joke from a comedian? MOVE THE FK ON. Simple. Not rocket science.
@@SniperDmn there's a huge difference between making a joke about terrible things which have happened to you and making light of terrible things which have happened to others. The latter is called punching down.
I think a good part of the triggered people are "offended in the name of". Pathetic people.
You, you overcame it, it is a win and now you can laugh.
Some are still in it, I doubt they take time to complain about a comedian.
Leaves the people whom lost someone to DV feeling pain and guilt, it is sad for them though no reason to bitch about comedy imho
Nice suite mr. Peterson, great taste! AND I really enjoyed this interview.
Absolutely loved this! ❤
Cancel culture is insane for treating Matt Rife as a bad comedian. He is funny and being able to work a crowd is a talent that should be appreciated.
Actually you can just stop at "Cancel culture is insane".
He wasn't "cancelled", it was just a publicity stunt.
He deliberately said something he knew would get attention for that very reason.
@@christopher_ecclestoneummm yeah that's how comedy works ....
@@jamkle6254 No! Comedy works by saying something funny that makes an audience all laugh at the same time.
@@christopher_ecclestone and that’s exactly what happened when he made the joke.

My autistic son wore a helmet for year due to head striking. I laughed too and joked with my wife that I wish I would have know about the website earlier on😂

I've learned that laughing at the negativity in my life is my is my super power. If I can't laugh at me, I give someone else power over me.
Comedians and satire allow us to critically look at our society in a way that no other art form allows for. Keep doing what you're doing!
film, tv, and music don't exist in your world? lmao what
comedy recently is some fluffed up para-social garbage and millionaires complaining about being cancelled whilst advertising their almost sold out tour...
And apparently also art doesn’t exist to add to that….
Spoken like a petty liberal fascist...LOL@@ToxicatedLum
And I don't understand how anyone could claim that a "domestic abuse" joke is an attempt to gain MALE FAN(they're more sensitive over domestic, than chicks)?!
--I think the fained "outrage" is from the same bitter,self-loathing chicks that don't get comedy; looking for a new target, a "trendy" cause.
Any "fans" that easily triggered aren't fans of comedy, they're the ones that enjoy looking at him.
Golden!
Comedy is the biggest and first defense for Freedom of Speech in the modern day.
We need people like Matt Rife in the world right now. He has more connection with people and community than the individuals who claim to care about victims, yet only work to speak on their behalf.
Victims get no help when they can't be heard.
100% it's our time's most important art form imo.
I'm not actively looking for Domestic Abuse content. And without wanting to I saw more shorts and video titles talking about Domestic Violence. Sure, it was also talked about Matt but our focus shifted towards abuse.

We document history to remember that we made mistakes and we'll continue to make mistakes, but we need to experience them to remind us what parts not to give power.
Civility is a philosophical belief. It needs to be practiced. Anyone who justifies violent reactions to anyone who doesn't agree with them isn't a Civil act.
