@@cristirock3 the dealership was changing the battery with the stop start AGM Mercedes’ authentic batteries for stop start. I think the main issue was that because it had the MBUX system and was always connected to the internet and the app, if you didn’t drive the car for a few days it really drained the battery quite heavily and over time that does damage the battery. I noticed as well on a few occasions after a week if I had not driven I got a low battery warning on the app and on the screen. I loved the Mercedes’ but after two years of annoying faults they bought the car back. The most annoying of all, a car that put itself into neutral whilst driving for no reason! However the system was so easy to use with the touchpad whilst driving. I just didn’t expect it to need a new battery each year of ownership.
I just bought the 330i and it’s a nice car, I don’t find it as exciting inside but it feels well built.
The bmw whilst not as exciting inside, really is so frugal on petrol I cannot believe it. It’s using 5-6L per 100km and it’s got more power then the Mercedes’ and an even bigger vehicle. It seems to be a bit smarter with the stop start, some how it knows at certain times that it’s not a good idea to engage.
The active grill also means the bmw is at optimum temperature within a minute which is really good if you want to put the heating on in winter, the engine is ready to go in no time.

A useless feature? My 3 minute stoplight waits would beg to differ lmao
Wear isn't a problem either, an engine doesn't experience any wear at all from starting, it's a common misconception. The problem is running the engine while it's very cold, and the start/stop will turn the engine back on before it cools off. From a wear perspective, starting an engine while hot is no different from revving it a bit. Start/stop does, however, reduce the total runtime of the engine, which does prevent wear, as every revolution of the engine induces wear.
And if you're concerned about the starter motor; it's literally designed for this. The only problem is that you have to use a high-quality battery, which is a bit more expensive.

A starter motor is the same for cars with and without start stop. The starter motor will have to endure more starts in a shorter amount of time therefore it had more wear over a shorter period of time. This will result in a startermotor needing replacement sooner, that beeing said, that's most likely something the next owner will have to replace since most people ditch cars before they need bit maintaining.

  • @FullmetalC5
    @FullmetalC5 Před 2 lety

So someone may have already said these things.. but 1. The start/stop feature is partly to help cut back on emissions, but it's mainly for fuel savings. As a child I was always told to leave the car running when we'd stop somewhere because you used more gas stopping and restarting it. That was true in carburated engines. In modern fuel injected engines the rule of thumb is that if you're going to be stopped for 10 seconds or more, it's more fuel efficient to cut the engine off and restart it. And 2. Start/stop systems do not wear out your vehicles starter. The main starter is not used to restart the vehicle with this feature. There is a small electric motor that restarts the vehicle while this feature is active. The only time the starter is used to start the vehicle is after a full shut off.

      @@specialopsdave It’s not Satire.
All the new and old vehicles that don’t have a winter driving mode I automatically turn off traction control.
When you need TC off is when you really need to not have to worry about why your not moving forward.
The best is when your going up a snowy road only to find rear wheel drive vehicles littering the road that you now have to drive around while avoiding traffic coming down the hill just to get to work. I deal with this every year especially the last hill before getting to the highway while going to work.
What really gets me is the fact that people don’t have good vehicles for winter driving when they live in a winter area.
My favorite truck is my 2000 Toyota 4Runner SR5 that doesn’t have traction control. All my other vehicles that I have had over the years up till now I have had to disable traction control because when one wheel slips the computer decides to throttle the engine power which in turn slows the vehicle down when you need it to speed up to get up the hill in snow.
And as a tip... if you have a 4x4 with no rear locker you can pull your e-break just a little so you can stop one wheel peel from happening.
Usually just one or 2 clicks on your e-break but don’t forget to take it off after you get to the top.

@@frankdelucey2137 Actually, I wasn't even thinking of RWD cars, my bad 😅 I forget they're totally different from the FWD and AWD cars I drive in winter, the only RWD vehicle I own is a '97 Dodge pickup that has magically avoided frame rust entirely so far, so I don't want to tempt fate and drive it in winter. Besides, it doesn't even have TC anyways, so I would never notice

If you are stopping for more than 10 seconds you save fuel shutting off the engine so it really is a useful feature if you've just caught a red light or stuck in a very slow moving traffic jam

It saves fuel consumption but in turn will wear your battery more and vehicles get worn off when turning on and off constantly. There’s people who have hit easily over 500k miles because they drive and go long distances instead of turning off and on.

I only ever use the start/stop occasionally, when the light goes red in front of me. I find my car 4-cyl 1.4L very economical, even when running. 48 mpg combined long-term driving cycle.

Don't turn it of permanently, it'll actually save on repairs later as the egr valve won't clog anywhere near as soon. It will save fuel also as the ports are much more clear than if you don't use it, increasing flow rates and efficiency of the motor.

Nearly sure if you bring it to the garage they can code it into the car to be off when the car starts instead of on.

The main reason to not use it, is because it puts strain on the starter. Rather than just once or twice a trip. It's at every red-light that's more than 3 sec.
