    FYI it was awarded the 2018 World Car Design of the Year Award and also was the runner up in the overall 2018 World Car of The Year Award (which the Volvo XC60 won). The reason it wasn't awarded the best in the overall category is because the Jaguar F-Pace (on which the Velar is based) won the award in 2017, and the judges probably didn't want to be accused of favouring JLR cars

      Exactly! I specced mine in Silicon Silver and would you believe it, there was a Maybach and a Mulsanne at my school, but all everyone was talking about was the Velar, its paint and its flush door handles. If you want a car to shame those overly and pointlessly exuberant individuals the Velar is the SUV to buy. Why would anyone term it as fat? Isn't that supposed to be a compliment towards the designer for having successfully mastered the art of designing cars? It's a visual technique, helped by the sloping roof line and wide LED tail lamps

      What driving mode were you in while driving through the offset holes? Having a locking rear differential would’ve made a big difference even though it still looked fairly easy to go through it. What tires do you have on your sport and what tires were on the Velar?

    Thanks for the input and test. I just ordered my Velar P400e. It will more than cover my needs, where i live you almost have to drive out of the country (Belgium) to find a mountain. I see it more as a better capable station wagon, with a very cool look. I did opt for the Terrain Response II and Terrain Progress Control. The back diff is not an option for the P400e Plugin-hybrid unfortunately; i even had them call Land Rover HQ to make sure as i would have added it.

  • @LordTechPro
    @LordTechPro Před 3 lety +17

    Man, like seriously, you are the first person I have ever witnessed to have called the Velar as "too fat". Guess what, the SUV is designed to look like a yacht, which is why the bow (rear end) hunkers down, while the front of the roof is raised up. Also the new full size Range Rover is expected to follow in the footsteps of the Velar. The Sport is way too overpriced for what it offers, and the Evoque is too small, which leaves us with the Velar
    In all honesty and (according to Doug) it is a much better way of designing a coupe SUV than say a Mercedes GLE Coupe's or BMW X4's rear end, which seem odd and sedan like.
    I wonder why you are bashing the Velar so much? It doesn't compete with the Sport, it competes with the likes of the GLC, GLC Coupe, GLE, GLE Coupe, XC60, X3,X4, X5 and Q5. When compared to all these cars, the Velar has much better off road capability and a properly drafted and cohesive design.

    Never been a Range Rover fan until the Velar was revealed. In my opinion the sexiest looking Range Rover ever made. Now I'm in the market looking at the Velar. Its so far ahead of other Range Rover's in looks and design

  • @300bhpton
    @300bhpton Před 2 lety +4

    Great vid. Really does show that they do have 'off road' capability, but they make everything looks and sound so much hard work. A 1980s Range Rover classic would have breezed over those obstacles without lifting a wheel off the ground and without a locking differential insight, let alone traction control!

    • @DrivenHard
      @DrivenHard  Před 2 lety +1

      Can’t compare a 1980s with a modern Velar at all. One wasn’t even made back then and one is built for the city first and trail second. However you can still argue even back in 1980 a RRC was ahead of its time in terms of technology

    • @theinterceptor7223
      @theinterceptor7223 Před rokem

    Really helpful review. I own a 2019 Velar R-Dynamic and am thinking of switching to the Defender. I love my velar on the road, taking mountain curves, it’s sleek and sexy and drives like a sports car in my opinion. However, I wasn’t sure what the velar could do off-road, but this really helped me think about the lack of a low gear and not being able to see from a higher sitting position. Thanks for the review.

    • @DrivenHard
      @DrivenHard  Před 2 lety +1

      The Velar can definitely handle it’s own off road to an extent. I was really impressed with it. Even though it’s road focused it’s ready to get dirty when the pavement ends even on street tires!

      Check out the single amber button on the dash at 5:01 and 10:07. This means that hill descent control was on throughout the entire video (or at least the majority of it). Pretty poor I must say. Why would you engage hill descent control while going uphill? It would only needlessly engage the brakes. ATPC is available for that

    • @DrivenHard

    Speaking from experience, don't bother taking it through deep water. I have taken my RR Sport through water that was splashing over the bonnet in a Dubai flood, and it made it to the other side without an issue
    My previous Velar was caught in a flood with water only half way up the doors and the engine died...! Not made for real 4WDriving or driving through creeks, shallow rivers, floods, etc

    • @scandinavia6271
      @scandinavia6271 Před 3 lety +2

      The Velar is one of the most gorgeous looking SUVs ever designed! (I don’t own one myself) - looks so much better than what the Germans have come up with.
      Why do you need low range? Chose a suitable program in Terrain Response and you are good to go! 😉 It’s no more of a “cross-over” than the evoque. Yes, the RR Sport is more capable - but it does not really compete with a wrangler or a Defender..

    • @LordTechPro
      @LordTechPro Před 3 lety +2

      @@scandinavia6271 Exactly. Mercedes,BMW and Audi make eye catching coupe SUVs but you can't call any of them "gorgeous" or "elegant". They just seem too in your face and unnecessarily brash, which means in a just a couple of years you'll get bored of the design and it will get outdated.
      Not the Velar, which was revealed in 2017, yet 4 years later it still looks better proportioned and feels more special than any SUV from the German trio. In fact just in terms of design, the Velar is kilometres ahead of the Range Rover Sport and Range Rover. The bigger Range Rovers seem a bit too long in the tooth nowadays, which explains why many owners seem to envy the work of art which is the Velar. Gerry McGovern is already 65 years old, which is the age for retirement in the Tata Group. Though the new Evoque and the new Defender were launched after the Velar, you can clearly tell that the Velar is his masterpiece.
      Also, you have ATPC (a low speed cruise control) for low speed off roading, where you can just set the speed, take your feet of the pedals and relax.

    • @DrivenHard
      @DrivenHard  Před 3 lety +1

      ATPC is also on the Jaguar XF. It certainly doesn't replace a low range.
      Low Range is for better control and way more torque in low speed situations. No matter what the gearing may be for the 1st gear, low range is essential for low speed off roading

You have given me another perspective about Ranger Rover. I must be honest my biggest concern with Ranger Rover South Africa is their mechanical issues over 100k km. Unfortunately their Dealers here are know to be very unnecessary expensive 😕 😪 😢 😞. You have given idea to try one model out and see how it goes. My idea of fun is national parks and 4x4 outing.

    • @DrivenHard
      @DrivenHard  Před 3 lety +1

      Great to hear from you. Definitely a few things to keep in mind, south Africa will always be expensive for maintenance as well as Australia for these vehicles, its just a market thing. Just like BMW is expensive to maintain in NA but much more reasonable in the EU
      My experience with Range Rovers is brand new under 100k kms, luxury vehicles are not designed to last 10 years or 250k kms like a Toyota is still built to this day for that purpose. So as with any luxury brand it's always best to understand what you are getting and ensure it matches up with your goals in ownership etc
