We're back again this week with the ultimate questions "Originality VS Success". Can you have both? Do you sacrifice originality in pursuit of success? What is it that makes songs successful? Is it even originality? Let's discuss. I'm joined by producer Jenny May Finn.

She's great, she has that unique irish ability to just stare at you and say nothing when you're mentally running in circles, this is a great ability 😂
Hawkins..... youre gonna write something epic, stop stressing out about it and remember..... groove/grind THEN insert lyrical theme because its not melody OR lyrics, its how you blend the two 😉
Ps zep and stones are cover bands 😂
Hi it is I,frrrom HOLLAND, Justin Hawkins SIRrr..may I say, you're looking quite dandy and rather oelalala today....🤭😁 CHEERS and ❤ to all, Natasja
Hello, Justin - please have a listen to Mongolion metal band, The Hu 🤘 You won't regret it 🖤
This band are really good. The lead singer is from Lowestoft so come on worth a look and of course my son is the drummer. Domape' they bought a ep out in October 2023 Sleeve
Having fancy guests is cool, but my favs are always with Jenny🖤
She's awesome! She always had great points to make and great arguments to challenge a belief. Extremely intelligent and has a fun sense of humour. She also seems to have a good understanding of psychology and the mind. The perfect guest. 👌
I actually love her ❤
I don't think originality is about sounding completely different to everyone else because that is an impossible task. It's about sounding different ENOUGH to other stuff in the same vein that you stand out enough to set you apart.
I DO like when rock music tickles my nostalgia bone, but I also don't want to be bored... It's hard to explain what you really want. You want to be comforted and surprised at the same time... in a way...
I totally agree. I want a Foo Fighters song to be original, but still remind me of the old ones. New, yet comforting. I'm like that with most bands I enjoy 🤷♂️
@@revwillyg6450 Yes, you feel like the most demanding and unreasonable fan ever. Like, give me everything I loved once again, but make it totally new and exciting 😀 And it's such a subjective formula, too...
I know what I want, but not until I hear it!
@@ZuzuTheLemon Right! It's so hard to formulate, and it's so subjective, when you know, you know! 🙂
Agreed. Maybe check out my stuff if you've got a free minute. I try to write within that mindset.
I want to hear Jenny-May’s album of Irish Summer-Camp Love Songs!😂 ☘️🙌🏻
We are in an era of knowing the musician as a celebrity on social media but have no idea of their actual music.
"Space" is such an important element of band music that can set your band apart. It is SO overlooked for the simple reason that when a group sits down for the first time every member; usually in my experience, just starts playing and that creates a piled on sound with less space.
It was ALWAYS like this!!! Medieval sounds Medieval... Renaissance sounds like Renaissance... Baroque, Classics and so on... Once in a while something UNIQUE comes along and the dynamics change... Modernism really shook things up... It's good to know that the earlier eras lasted for about 200 years each... Not Modernism, though... We are so spoiled nowdays... Nothing lasts... But we have an enormous music treasure in the past - and it's so EASY to dig in... Enjoy!!! 🦩✨✨✨✨
Nearly spat out my morning coffee when y'all mentioned Slint. Best band.
You were my hope for the future of hard rock.
the coldplay lawsuit against Satriani was about another song."viva la vida".
IColdplay's entire early career was based off Sing by Blur.
Always the best interviews are with Jenni I love her no bullshit attitude because she’s correct in most of what she says ❤brilliant
In Australia "I lover her no bullshit" is usually how we break such news to our friends.
No bullshit attitude is fun, but doesn’t help the conversation in a constructive way. Saying there’s a guitar, a drum and a bass so it’s not original, is like saying when you’re painting faces there’s no difference between Rembrandt and Van Gogh or Vermeer, which is bullshit of course. A song or composition is like a painting really, lot’s of details that (combined) can make something original.
@@AnthonyCassidy50 Sorry I didn’t say I lover so your comment is futile
@@njwfransen I understand about the band structure as my late husband was a musician , well & singer in two Rock bands . So I agree that in most cases the line up is exactly similar but each band sounded different in my humble opinion I tend to think the lead guitarist is the star of the show & a crap drummer totally destroys the entire sound , nearly there doesn’t cut it . I think with Justin because he’s in the business and understands and takes on the role of Frontman perfectly . To be completely honest I found the whole band and Ego massaging that seem to be needed was rather exhausting. But I’m no expert on the subject so what the fuck do I know . Obviously Jenni questions are scripted but they always go off topic and I find that amusing as I witnessed that even with small time bands , majority of the time they were just about winging it .
That suit is absolutely smashing my friend.
Great conversation, like always. Thank you guys a lot for taking the time and effort.
We are all influenced by someone, so how can we be completely original..
Ever?
The satriani/ coldplay one was around his tune “if i could fly”. There are youtube vids layering one over the other and they are almost identical. I heard it was settled out of court and to this day Satriani refuses to talk about it, so I suspect an NDA (non disclosure agreement) was part of the settlement
Justin is killing that cravat👍🎩
And those shades!
Originality: the skillful talent to evoke a familiar and pleasant feeling of appreciation for that talent, making what is old (musical, lyrical history and evolutions) seem surprising new...in the best sense of creativity. The object of Art is some new, aesthetic experience that originally, creatively informs and surprises and delights. Beauty is Pleasure. Truth is Beauty. That is all. Cheers!
I couldn’t agree more. Jeff Buckley was extraordinary. Such a sad, sad loss. You two create great fodder. Very entertaining. ❤️
It’s impossible to think of original until it comes along
What's original is how things are packaged. Artists always borrow. Frank Zappa said "it's what they see not what they hear". Lenny Kay told me a picture of a hamburger could be art to some who view it. That's why MTV became huge. What made I believe in a thing called love a hit? The video and the lead singer doing a unusual falsetto to a great song. That's a trifecta. Boom!
Justin, I remember beyond in at class senior year (junior year too) and shootin the shit with my fellow classmates. We all loved your work with the darkness. This was AGES ago, of course.
Keep up the good work, man. You're awesome
I don't think I've ever been in a bathroom that looks so posh, do they have gold bog seats?
It would be great if we could see how they got that camera angle at 00:18 from the bathroom sink 👀 😁
@@Rocksarum 😂 I think someone had to squat.
Ta J & J! That conversation was absolute brain candy ... the mental perambulation just tickles my thinky-bits!
I believe, I believe - that we'll never fully qualify what we enjoy/yearn for in a song. As recent studies (eg: amongst dementia patients) have elucidated - music speaks to our primordial self, tapping into the earliest-evolved language & memory centres of our brain. It goes beyond conscious description & analysis. This touches on why music is SO powerful in modifying moods, behaviour (& even mental health) on both conscious & subconscious levels.
Is it therefore likely that there are sound patterns, musical algorithms if you will, that strike the right note😉to evoke deep, instinctual responses?
It's an interesting personal investigation to ask the question - What is it about that music that 'gets to me'? I think we will often find this difficult to define ... as that part of us that the music 'gets to' is the ancient, primordial communication/memory part of our brain.
Keep on musing& rockin'! 🤘
To me, it's always the singer who makes the music "original." For rock music, it has to sound more or less the same as everything else otherwise it wont fit the genre (generic and genre both sharing roots in gene-), but when that music is funnelled through a unique personality and performance it becomes original.
Desired "Originality" = great music, that explores the edges, while having a touch of familiarity.
I think that if you take something, and put your own spin on it, it's original
I’m 17 minutes in and all I can think of is this is why so many people have been enamoured and fallen in love with Ren. Because he’s such a breath of creative, musical fresh air and truly unlike any artist we’ve experienced before. Also, stuff like Kim Dracula which is like a scattergun approach of blasting every imaginable style of music at a wall and letting it all splat gloriously across our ears…
I immediately thought of Ren, too!!
So interesting you two 🙏
You hit the nail on the head re authenticity and emotional resonance. There is recent scientific evidence around neurotransmitters in the heart, proving what Indigenous cultures have always known about the heart- mind connection. In conclusion, Roxette were right…“ listen to your heart “ ❤
_That_ was a really good song! I bought the single.
i think the bigger issue is in the listener who is just waiting for an opportunity to complain rather than listen. Social media has made this the "Golden Age of Complaining."
Like you complaining about people who complain. No, it's unimaginative corporate shit.
“Are you defending the Cold-play?” Are you channeling Steven Toast? Brilliant!
Another BLOODY BRILLIANT chat. I love the conclusion that authenticity rules over everything else. Surely that’s why true music fans recognise the actual stars! Thank you Justin & Jenny xx ❤️❤️🦩🐈🐈⬛🐈🐈⬛🐈🗽🌋🍸🍸🍸 xxx
OMG I HAD THIS EXACT conversation yesterday with someone.
I think the masses just haven’t had the proper exposure to more complex music; so, the simplistic stuff makes more money. Similarly, in the Midwest, most people can’t eat spicy food. It’s not the spice’s fault, it’s just that the people had no exposure to it growing up.
But I’m lucky to have people in my life that introduced me to the magical stuff, like my brother who is a guitarist, and a few other close friends who just love rock and metal and taught that appreciation to me, in a way.
You have to start somewhere. Most folks start with Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star and don’t make it much further because they are sad souls without the right listening opportunities. Yes, they should be mocked, but also pitied!
Always enjoyable!!! Brilliant, especially on a British rainy day! Trying hard to be my "original " self😅....rock on guys!!🤘
“Influenced by vs. deritive of” is a very fine line. Inspiration, skill, bravado, and vulnerability are all necessary in my view. Spend time writing great songs and then worry about production. Because of tech we are all focused on production and that’s what the music sounds like.
Bring on AI. Is it influenced or derivative? Rules against AI change what/how humans can produce new music?
I LOVE listening to these conversations. Excellent interviewer, excellent interviewee (who’s who alternates) Thanks for sharing, I really look forward to them.
Thank you!!
So, still listening but at the start where you're talking about how 'music from x just sounds like y' of all things the one thing to me that really drove it home AND opened my eyes to the idea that not everything has to be original, but maybe its delivery is how its original would be Bill and Ted Face the Music. I thought they did that concept beautifully, where they went and grabbed a bunch of the 'best' at something.and ended up using their sounds to produce something new. It really changed how I looked at the recent releases of music and helped me appreciate it more.
I've found that the podcast 'The History of Rock and Roll in 500 Songs' is a great way of linking all that together, from the jazz guitarists of the 1930s up to modern music. It's really interesting if you're into the historical/influence part of it.
I love it when Jenny has to explain things awkwardly to Justin…swinging…😮😂
Watching this at 3:42am... good day to you all! Love your attire here, Justin 🤟🏻🎶
Always love you & Jenny in conversation, thoroughly enjoyable.
More please.
Thanks!
Justin & Dan Hawkins have demonstrated originality and authenticity can be sustained long term while consistently being enthusiastically supported by a legion of devoted Darkness fans around the world.
The Darkness survive, even thrive, on the steam of their immense collective talent, creative drive and impassioned convictions backed up with 23+ years of unapologetic Rock.
editorial aside - The family is loving Justin's clean shaven face and wavy styled hair lifted off the forehead: handsome.
Please keep this look for awhile, kind sir! Your complexion is marvelous, your facial features pleasing. You, looking refreshed & full of vitality.
Yes, we want you to express yourself but some of us selfishly wish to view your handsome countenance free of stache & shadowy bristle....so that it may be captured in tour photos marking the new year. 🤘
👍👍Hi. The Sparks! Of course... that's the connection I hear with a Thing called love.
Guys, I like listening to your conversations. And more of Jenny, is better too :) like her.. About originality - I found it beautiful that the darkness has this harmony within every song, together with nice composition. It's just harmonic, I don't know how to call it another way. Even if they are influenced by others too, still, when there's Justin's voice, I don't think about Queen when I listen to it. Because it has the character. But, hey, I love you guys even more if you also hate Coldplay. Finally someone. In today's music, it's hard to find something breathable. I guess, because Justin is "Mozart in singing", his music breathes and flows. I think I said it quite well.
Jenny, we feel for your love story :D
Summer camp in Ireland :D
Justin Fucking Hawkins Rides Againnnnnnnnnn! 🙌🏽🎸🕺🏽
Isn't it possible that with limited notes and limited sounds we've exhausted the majority if not all possibilities of human pleasing sounds? Given enough time with enough participants it's possible. There are no bands now that will be remembered in the same way as those from the past, probably ending in the '90s.
INFECTIOUS!
I love you two...
That Slint record you’re bringing up is a truly original one. In fact I think it’s a masterpiece. But they didn’t try to make a hit record, did they? Mainstream music needs recognisable hooks and a chorus that sticks. The art of pop would be to that formula both recognisable for it’s uniqueness and appreciated on morning radio. There’s also a thing about authenticity and intent for longevity.

Interesting convo
I enjoyed it.
You have to listen to Father John Misty, Fleet Foxes, Chad Vangaalen, Vetiver, Olden Yolk, Woods, deerhunter, atlas sound, yo la Tengo, Galaxie 500, Nick Drake, corridor, Radiohead, six organs of admittance, hood, sonic boom, Spacemen 3, velvets, Telstar drugs, midlake, Roy Montgomery, telescopes, killed by 9volt batteries. All good stuff.
Thanks to you and Jenny for another interesting long podcast. I liked the subject. As a former singer songwriter, I completely agree with your final statement. As long as music and the song moves you, the authenticity of the voice and the meaning of the lyrics really gets to you, that's all that matters. In my career, I always tried to sing and perform with meaning, with emotion to properly convey the lyrics. I think this is what attracts people to songs in the main. and not whether a song is original. I sent you a song to be considered for your analysis at Leeds JHRA gig, perhaps you will use it, it's not your usual rock song, it's slow and melodic, maybe you will include it, and enjoy it perhaps. This is why I like you, Justin Hawkins, you are a free spirit when it comes to music, whatever the style or genre, you give everything a chance. I am the same, enjoying classical to rock, to dance music and heavy metal. Whatever catches my ear and my spirit, it gains my attention. I started writing songs at age 12 and didn't stop for 25 years, and still, all music moves me, original or not. And by the way, in 1976, the band I was in wrote a song which had an intro very similar to Sweet Child of Mine...I wonder if they got hold of our album, which was released in 1977..or people just have the same ideas without knowing it.
Well clearly original teeth are............................. just banter, i love him.
Green Day's Basketcase chord progression is basically the most overused chord progression in popular music... it is based on Canon by Pachelbel. The only difference is it's played a half-step down.
The Joe Sat/Coldplay lawsuit was dismissed by the judge.
I heard it was settled out of court?
Authenticity, originality, 50 plus albums, yet I've never hear you mention Peter Hammill once.Probably one of the UK's national treasures. Johnny Lydon to David Bowie have all bowed to him. Time to educate your viewers.
Thank you for this... it is subject dear to my heart. I feel that most of what we call "creativity" is just skilful imitation. Originality is a whole different thing (search for EVERYTHING IS A REMIX here on CZcams) and there are very few original artists imo. Yes, it's got lots to do with appealing to the market... people prefer the familiar (that's why cover bands do very well in pubs). Many popular musicians don't even write their own songs and their mass appeal has got more to do with the "cult of personality" than anything else. That aside, I think we've lost the ability to connect with the original source of creativity itself... what I call "the muse". I've been writing a book about it for over ten years and it's still unfinished. As a singer-songwriter myself, this intrigues me. We are all bound to be influenced by what we put into our heads. That's why so many British bands sing in American accents! I really hate that. Btw, you're right about Jeff Buckley... he was authentic and did a lot of covers but he recognised that he was a very good mimic and wanted to create original songs (which he eventually did). I think originality is being open to the source or core of creative inspiration directly without getting in your own way and just allowing it to flow through your unique flavourful self as a vessel. There is no guarantee that anyone else will like it and maybe that's why there aren't enough original artists making it big... we all need to earn a living. How is an artist supposed to survive if nobody wants what they create? I released an album on Bandcamp in 2019 featuring a lifetime's worth of my favourite musical collaborations and to date have only sold seven copies for my efforts... hannerchant.bandcamp.com/album/eurdy
RIGHT you are! And those seven copies won't remain the only ones you've sold, there will at least be an eighth, bought by me.
Thank you @@captainfineweather5610 🥰
Jenny is so cool! I also love hair nailpolish lol
30 minutes in, and i find myself quietly pondering if Justin and Jarvis have ever been in the same room.
Jarvis cocker or Iron man’s assistant because he does look a bit like Paul Betney haha
Sorry to bust your bubble, Argos stopped the catalogues. It’s mind blowing, I know. I still try to get my head around it as my last memories were just that - but that was 15 years ago I guess. It’s all in the Cloud now 😞
I was blown away when you mentioned Pachelbel’s Canon- my favorite song of all time. Your knowledge of music never ceases to amaze!
Very interesting topic! And I'm in love with Dirty Honey now XD
Hello,It was "Viva la Vita" Vs "If I could fly" on Joe Satriani but...the Satriani Song was alike a Enanitos Verdes song😊
More jenny!!!!!
I call dibs on the song title: "Potato full of baskets. "
Justin and Jenny, would love for you to review Adrianne Lenker and/or her band Big Thief.
She strikes the perfect balance of familiarity and uniqueness, with sonics that stand alongside the likes of Radiohead, the melodic power of The Beatles or Elliott Smith and lyrics as strong as Leonard Cohen and Dylan.
A true generational talent 🤍
Jenny May with the classic Gaeltacht story. An Irish staple.
A Perennial Love Story.
The talk of authenticity got me thinking about Mark Lanegan records - my all time favourite (Field Songs) is probably the least original, (which is not to say he doesn't have his moments), but its the way he sings that just hits differently. Doesn't hurt that he's probably one of the finest lyricists to ever walk the earth, but the songs themselves are mostly dead simple.
Recycling influences has always been part of music, I think where some people get annoyed is when you basically sound like a cover band.
Queen!
Christina Aguilera's James Brown tribute performance was a cover that was iconic and authentic and in those ways, an original. I believe that ANY of Lady Gaga's or Miley Cyrus' tribute performances (Carol King, Elton, etc.) would easily qualify as authentic also, in it's delivery and art. I love great tribute performances. Great podcast. You're both looking pretty sharp and snappy!
I have one for ya! How about the band Cake? They are quite original I think, and I love them.
YEAH!
Definitely different and original.
Jeff Buckley-could of reworked anything and made it amazing
I feel like Diablo Swing Orchestra are still one of the most original bands out, very eclectic and one song won't really give you a full picture but if you listen to songs like Superhero Jagganath, Jigsaw Hustle, Speedating an Arsonist, Voodoo Mon Amour and Lucy Fears the Morning Star it gives a good range of what they're like.
I think it's still possible to be original with an audience.
It will be interesting to see how
the Folk Prog band Gåte will do
In the Eurovision song contest.
I dont care much about the Contest in general but it will be interesting to see how the masses
take it.
All musicians are influenced by the previous musicians they were attracted to. They can draw on all their influences and make original music. But it's human to compare, it gives us reference. It's irritating for musicians though to be constantly compared to others.
If a song isn't a hit is it then a bad song? I don't agree. There's a lot of lucky timing. And once a band is big enough everyone listens to their next song. There are great tunes out there but the world is a big place and many will only be locally successful.
Indeed "Clocks" was pretty original😊
I think that a) ever has it been thus. Creativity and innovation has always moved in mysterious ways. Seemingly nothing for ages and then great spurts of Something New, and b) Something New requires lots of empty space, lots of quiet, and lots of time, lots of introspection, and lots of paying attention. Our world is stewing in perpetual intrusions into all of those and our Creatives are not exceptions to that reality. If our artists and innovators and creatives are not sequestering themselves from the incessant noise of the modern world, I don’t know that we can reasonably expect much that is New. And it’s always a dance, isn’t it? Between the musician and the receivers of their music. The Overton Window of music is such that a New Sound can just be too discordant and incoherent for an audience, and musicians are also audiences … so if they are not hearing Something New and being challenged in that way, how likely are they to themselves respond with Also Something New? We live in such a bizarre time. It would appear as though we have a kind of Hyper Novelty with New Things coming at us non stop, but they aren’t new at all, are they? They’re just derivative iterations of the same thing with a lot of human psychology backed engineering to the Influencing to make us want the thing even though we already have it. We have whiplash and we are dazed and numbed, but we do not have true novelty. It’s very odd. But ya, I think an audience and a musician create a kind of electrical circuit and they require one another to be attuned to the same frequency to close that circuit and generate Movement. We have a dearth of both, I think. And I think perpetual distraction, too much noise in the head is largely to blame. We can’t attend properly like we used to when we had the space and time to mull a New thing over and decide if it was actually brilliant or if it was just incoherent noise. Something like that, maybe ….
thirrrrd! 'right Justin, how ya doin, mate? Im just hanging around the pudlian, enjoying this early.
Be Well, -Dave from KC
12:25 fuk yes, Spiderland is amazing
There used to be a documentary on CZcams about Spiderland and Slint. Recommended.
nice one
So was that table with the microphone articulated boom arms already there? Or did they bring it in? Why would it already be there? Why wouldn't it? So many questions.... ....and i want answers...
I once wrote the verse to “material girl” by accident. It was 3 people removed before someone noticed. Then it was so obvious it was amazing I didn’t notice immediately. I try hard to be original, but it’s very hard to be novel.
I'm so going to write a song called "Falling In Love With A Long Haired Boy In An Irish Summer Camp"
The goal is to create a saleable commodity that's a hit to get your name on the map. Then you work out your influences through your first few albums, a necessary phase, before finding your own voice. "Everybody wants to say what's already been said," Prince sang in All That Glitters Ain't Gold. I once wrote that it's okay to write a cliche in the first draft of something as it sets down a marker you can get far, far away from in the rewrites. The Doors were jamming to Ghost Riders In The Sky by Johnny Cash and turned it into their version of it, Riders On The Storm. You can do that too.
Think about Unchained Melody. It's the humanity, the performance, the lyrics, the emotion.
A big issue with originality now is the production. Everyone’s using the same fx, watching the same tutorials, using the same references. It’s boring. The new The Smile album is such a breath of fresh air. Real recording with dynamics lovingly produced.
Without lyrics a song is just a tune. Lyrics are important, or at least they are for me.
Very well said! I feel exactly the same👍
I dunno, certain chord progressions and certain harmonies just grab me by the neck. Is it a chord progression I've heard before? If it's really great it doesn't give me a chance to think about it, it'll tap into my inner rage, ha ha, and I'm down with it.
An album I heard recently that is original-ish, from the '90's is "Dragline" by Paw. Great stuff, melodic and aggressive. They have another song that's called "Suicide Shift" that has everything you two were talking about...including dissonance.
It's impossible beeing totally original. Even Picasso took something from previous artists and modelled his own style. Every single artist does. The originality is putting your own soul in the transformation process. But in music mainly we will always try to find connection with something heard in the past. This is also valid for each bands' new album. Fans always try to catch connections with previous ones.
12:22 I can’t believe Justin had never heard of Slint before, so ironic coming right after the previous part aha.
Woahhh I feel like this applies in the art world as well- it’s so hard to be original because your audience will be so niche- but if you get real good at drawing dogs you stand a chance 😂
Considering the thrust of this convo, I was waiting for you to mention Greta van Fleet. Glad to hear your thoughts on them, and that they mirror mine. Yes, they sounded Zeppelin-esque when they started, but not at all anymore. People who continue to say that haven’t heard their last couple albums. Or went into those albums expecting Zeppelin, so that’s what they heard. I don’t hear it at all anymore. Now I recognize their songs immediately as GVF. And Josh Kiszka is an amazing vocalist.
Despite you said you didn't know what you were talking about, I fully agree with your conclusion👍😊
PS: Nice cardie Jenny!🧡😉 (and better tangential meanderings 😂...I think I've said it before, but times runs so fast watching you both chat... it just flows so naturally)

It's weird, I was just thinking about what you opened the podcast with. If someone is original, they often aren't appreciated during their lifetime or during their peak/the time they are active. It's in retrospect that people can stand back and realize their impact or how good their stuff really is. Often, what sells in the moment isn't what stands the test of time, while what people don't get excited about or laugh off at the time is revered later. For instance, I find it hard to believe Hall and Oates were laughed at in their prime, but that's what I've heard. Critics blew them off.
I've felt that way for so long. Very good comment. No one wants to search for a needle in a hay stack, but when they stumble upon the needle by accident they curse it for poking them and throw it back in the hay stack.
Prince was booed off the stage in 1981, opening for the Stones.
J. Geils and George Thorogood didn’t exactly fit with the Stones, but they were tolerated, not booed off.
It music leads back to fiddle-dee-dee and the Airwolf theme tune...loving these podcasts and voyeuring your enlightening conversations!
I don’t believe it’s really possible nowadays to do anything ‘original’ when it comes to Rock or Pop music, however there have been tons of innovative developments in other genres - just the proliferation of different sub-genres of modern metal is proof of that, mostly to do with developments in music production and technology. Same with EDM etc. BUT - surely the POINT of rock is to strip out all that nonsense and get back to a ‘real’ live band sound, which is totally refreshing in the age of autotune and drum loops. For me, authenticity and emotional content, with great musical ability, is way more important than ‘originality’ ❤
There's a saying in engineering that 1 + 1 = 3. In other words, you take elements of two existing technologies and come up with something new. For example, the inventors of the mobile phone took elements of landline telephony, combined them with radio and came up with a radio network that's as easy to use as a telephone network. Good artists do that with their influences. They're not ENTIRELY original because they HAVE influences: but they ARE original because their product is not the same as that of their influences.
