I’m an IT admin that has to deal with Macs on occasion. Just had to dispose a hard drive in 2006 iMac and this video was a great resource. You are a great resource. I’ve used several of your videos before and I just want to say thank you.
Great Vid. I just put an SSD HD in my iMac, and expanded the ram to the maximum 2GB. It's given it a new lease of life and it now sits happily on our kitchen breakfast bar - perfect for casual browsing, facebook etc. And it still looks pretty stylish even though it's nearly 8 years old :-)
I think I have now seen all of the CZcams videos on this and I have not been able to get the clips at the top of the bezel to release. Until now. Your method and instructions work beautifully ! Thank you!!
Very clear instructions! Gives me hope for a long retired machine.
The best tutorial of this model , thank you so much
A friend brought me a first gen iMac his aunt gave him that wasn't working. Long story short the hdd is busted. I'm a PC tech so once it's open it's no big deal but I had no idea where to get started on opening it. My friend thanks you for the video and his now working iMac.
Thanks for the video. Not a perfect match for my 20" but using the credit card to remove the front was a huge help and made repairing the last one much easier than the previous two times.
Come to think of it I'm not sure what I did before, but I'm pretty sure it involved frustration and force.
I just wanted to thank you for your clear, concise, spot on instruction. I've been working on computers for a loooooong time, but Mac is just not my specialty. The bezel spring clips were ridiculous, but I got it done thanks to your explanation. Excellent job on this video, literally 1,000 thanks on this one. This is what CZcams was made for! :-)
You do such a good job of explaining. I will remember this page for when i need further computer repair resources. Thanks!
Rebecca, u r very, very good. the way you workout through the whole process with detailed explanations is simply amazing. pleasure to watch your video.
Video was most helpful - couldn't have replaced the HD myself if it weren't for this video.
Watch out with the 20" version. I broke the wire to my microphone. The wire to the mic and webcam do not unplug on the 20". A gentle pull on what I thought was a plug connector broke the wires. You actually have to unscrew the entire circuit card that the mic and webcam are mounted on. Aside from that, the differences were minor enough that this video helped me tremendously.
Thanks for this. I've just upgraded the hard drive in one of these. Trying to unlatch the clips and get the front panel off is one of the most stressful things I've ever had to do in my life.
I shot, stabbed and poisoned myself from so much stress. This video saved my life.
I just picked up a drive to put in a 24" iMac 2006 (6,1). Your video was most helpful. A few things were different with this one. When I tried the credit card trick it just bent up the card. I found I just had to tilt the frame out at the bottom and up to release it. There are no clips, just a flat metal flange that slides into the top's slots. There was no protective paper to peel out of the way. Also one cable (video?) is soldered, so I just flipped it over while it was laying down.
Thank you so much for making this video. It was really helpful, I just got one from a client who wanted to upgrade the hard drive.
Thanks for showing this, it helped a lot! Hard Drive replaced thanks to your instructions!
Great explanations. Very helpful video.
I been repairing these sorts of iMacs for years, I have to admit this is the worst designed case for disassembly, Rebecca is correct in that this is the most frustrating part especially if the clips are bent
Needed to get the HD out before recycling, and this was super useful. Thank you!
Used this video to fix my iMac. Worked great except the hard drive was nestled differently. Thanks :)
I just replaced my imac hd by following ur video. Thank you a lot!! :)
Thank you! You have helped me out so much.
Small Dog Electronics are gods.... and goddesses. Thanks for the help.
Thanks Rebecca! You are a true "genius".
Thx Apple for making simple things more harder :]
I heard her state screw sizes as removed T6, T8, T10, etc. I had no problem finding them at local big box home store. The only area I would expand on is the T10 screws around the LCD screen. She is using a magnetic screwdriver. Notice screw sticking to the tip of the driver. Also you need a one piece screwdriver (not separate bits that fit in a common driver head) as the hole to access is narrow.
Perfect instructions. Rebecca're great!
you have given me the inspiration to fix my computer! Thank you!
TNKS. I APRECIATED. BLESSED BE
Hi there, Thanks for the vid. Just a couple of things: On my iMac the aluminium foil just wouldn't peel off. I used brute force approach with a cutter and simply cut the foil.
Also, you don't say that if a heat sensor is available, it should be removed and glued to the new disk.
I did not do that, and now the iMac has the fans on full blast. Doh. I'm going to have to take it apart again to fix that :-(
Thanks for your video. Is was very useful even if I opened a iMac externally the same of yours but internally a little bit different. Anyway the trick of the two top rear clips was amazing. Thanks for doing this youtube clip. Max Italy
I literally just clicked this video heard a womens voice and was shocked for a sec. I am very very happy to see a fellow computer/electronics nerd that is not just another guy. cudos to you madam and like luwe80 said we do need more females in the IT field.
Thank you for your help, it's much appreciated!
Thank you for this tutorial. Very good
did the dog ever make it outside?
very helpful video
Much easier to remove and replace the video cable in these. WAAAAY better than the PITA iMac 2010/11. :D
thanx alot you gave me the courage to do it,
actually its a piece of cake :-)
Wonderfully well done! Thank you!
Very helpful video. Thanks!
Hello,
the video is very beautiful and also well done.
I have only one doubt.
I have seen that there is no temperature sensor on the disc.
Is it correct?
Thanks Vincenzo
Excellent tutorial it really helped thank you.
When I replaced the HDD with SSD I had to calm down the HDD fan. I used software solution the app called "Macs Fan Control" by CrystalIDEA. But you could also try shorting the fan socket with a simple clip
That's very helpfull video from Expert, Thanks a lot!
part 2????
I know this is old, but very good video on this, thanks.
Having the devil of a time getting my 2006 a1200 24" iMac top bezel latches open. Too late to NOT be frustrated... :)
Any chance of getting a close up picture or pictures, or even better, close up video of those top latches from the inside, and show just how they move/latch/unlatch, maybe with a credit card inserted from underneath to show just how the card should unlatch them?
I've subscribed so hopefully you'll get this and possibly be able (or someone else viewing this, got a bezel you could video and upload to youtube or something) to do this. Sure would help me figure why mine isn't coming open.
Thanks.

@SecreyAlley snow lepard is the best and believe its the newest.
They are called Spudger tools on their package :):)
I just took my 24" a1200 apart. there was 8 screws holding the screen in if anyone needs to know. 4 on each side.
What a nightmare trying to screw them back in too.
Hi, nice video. Do I use any HDD of my choice to replace?
nice tutorial
Can you do a video on how to get the stand off?
Great vid. I am replacing my HDD on my iMac and I see Rebecca is using a T-10 Torx driver to remove the LCD. My question is,,, what brand t10 driver is being used and where can I get one. I think a magnetic tip would be good for this. Any suggestions folks? Thanks
Any T10 would be fine.
very helpful, thanks
Thank you for this video - those case clips were annoying, until I read about the credit card trick. Then there was the EMI shield. Many of the big electrolytic caps had leaked. As well as being a computer, this is a slow cooker - Steve Jobs and his dislike of fans, eh?
I have problem, how to repair , if my iMac not show at monitor , but sound good..
Fantastic video! You are the best, darling.
I have an old Intel 2006 iMac and am going to follow your video to pop in an SSD. I was wondering if its possible to replace the optical drive with a 2.5" hdd at the same time using a blank optical bay with pata to sata. will it have the correct power and data bandwidth? thx in advance
Well I cracked open my 20" iMac and folks it's totally different inside than the 24" in this video. I guess I assumed wrong. Thanks for the reply btw.
+M Alves this video was of a 17"
cool stuff, t. y. Small Dog.
I need to find a long T8 screw driver to get those screens deep down the side of the LCD screen. Geez. Why they make it so deep... ugh
Very good!
I love this. I watch this just for fun ... (I know .. sad .. :/ but still good, yes?)
i wish like the ram they made it easier to get to the hdd
I completely agree with you. Each time, I view a simple repair on an Intel imac (replace the hard drive, power supply, etc.) it appears Apple only wanted this to be done by a certified computer repair shop. Makes me glad that, I own a white 20 inch imac with a G5 Power PC processor. This desktop was designed to be upgraded with (RAM, AirPort Card, Hard Drive, etc.) by the average home computer user and is very simple to open. Once open easy access is provided for the user to reach most components.
I cannot get the back off. What do I do now?
I have a 20" Intel core 2 duo, serial# Last 4 is 5VUV, EMC# 2118. Originally it ran Tiger then I upgraded to snow leopard and yes I have the original disks. I still have the original HD installed and it almost full so it's time for an upgrade. I also have a newer MacBook Pro. The new HD I want to install is a WD 2TB.
I've come across a lot of situations where someone has installed a new HD and then installed the Install Disk and got nothing - they wasn't pressing the the keys or what not. My problem or question is how did these people format their new HD to begin with? I don't think they arrive mac formatted. As far I know the only way to format a drive is by using Disk Utilities, well how can this be accomplished if the new drive is unformatted and has no OS.
Help
thx
Please can u tell me how i can boot mode recovery in this monster
Is there an easy way to screw the display back when reassembling?
Yeah, I was about to throw the thing out the window every time the screws fell inside it. Then the display wouldn't come on afterwards. Taking it to the shop later today.
Hi where did you get the power screw driver that you are using?
can u do one for a macbook crack case replacementt
Card wouldn't work for me, I drilled small holes and used metal rod/pin to unlatch it.
Seriously...?
@@TR2000LT yep, if you use a sheet of paper and align it with the side of the vent to get a vertical line up the back and then measure in 1 cm from there inward and drill the hole 6mm below the seem of the bezel and main case. I drilled holes at are about 2-3mm diameter.
Would have been safer to do this with the bezel off so I would not be drilling blind, but i used videos of others opening these to get a view of the latches and guessed the location using their hands as references. I planned to do this anyways even if i was able to get the card to work.
gawddang, gemsroadwarrior's instructions are for a G5, not an Intel machine.
is it possible to replace the HD with a 2TB WD sata2
muy didáctico y muy lindaa ; )
ma che imac è?
Mine looks different inside oh well
I saw another video that you can just take the back off instead of he front...
+Matt Thomas ............. that was a different year 17"
These suckers are harder than heck to identify without careful scrutinizing or tearing them apart.
the g5 ppc 20" model was indeed that easy. I really don't understand why they had to make it so difficult with this model.

damnit ,Ed!
10 minutes to open up a computer? Glue? A credit card? Holy crap!
I think your dog wants to go outside
It was designed not to be removed. What a nightmare!!!
We need more females in the IT field.
Who cares?
@Reaber Saadi *iCares*
thats the computer i watched this on lol
omg i just watch it on 2019 😵😵
why does the way that "gemsroadwarrior" (on this site ) seem much more easier???? he replaces it from the back!
You saved my backside with this vid, I would have torn the thing up if I had went at it alone.... By the way, you are an excruciatingly hot tech. :)
oOBlackHandOo 2 years and no response. boooo!!! at least say thank you, bitch! jk haha good job.
@@genuiskills9546 2 years and no response. boooo!!!
@ Dog: 1:15 DAFAQ WAS THAT?!?
Great, theres no cables from the screen to the PC itself...so it is wireless eh?.....!
What?
I was close to throwing this POS onto my cold polished concrete floor after spending more time than I ever wanted to when removing that farking bezel.
Mine didn't have those clips at the top - I spent about an hour trying to get them to release, then another video showed a guy just working the front off the machine, which worked.
The real name of your "black stick" is a Spudger
Thanks for the info! Just for future reference, A smart woman is very attractive. I will use your adviceQ
This video is sooo hot.
Lame
Excellent tutorial it really helped thank you.
