Restoration of Vintage radio Philips 15RB525 Prestige

- Found this radio at Flea Market in Kolkata in September 2019.
Philips 15RB525/11z, from the 1970's, Made in India.
The radio was in a fairly good condition when i found it.
Not much was done to the radio. only electrolytic Filter Capacitor was changed. rest of the circuit was in Good condition.
Speaker was reconed.
Some body work was done.
over all it was an easy restoration.

I some earlier days some lost of some vintage goods been lost including radio and record player with amplifier circuit for the leakage & drying up of the electrolytic capacitors and been thrown out or sold to the collectors of recyclers in our student days. At that time though tried learning of hobby electronics not much skilled as is of these days. As you mentioned here, this radio is also one year older than me. Have a wish to collect this type of radio for collection for the hobby. Sound quality from valves and the efficiency of the metalic gang capacitor is terrific in these devices.

Old is Gold which can never be sold. To tell you a story- my maternal Grandfather gifted a small valve radio to my father in the year 1961. The radio is Phillips Popular. Model No. B2CA09U. The set is probably the smallest AC/DC valve radio ever manufactured by Philips India Limited, Calcutta (Kolkata). It has 4 valves- UCH81, UBF89, UCL82 and UY85. The set has no Magic Eye or Dial Lamp. Only a Switch + Volume knob you need to Pull the knob to switch on, a Tuning knob and a sliding band switch on the right side of the cabinet. Just two bands - MW and SW. Originally it had can type IFTs but now has small equivalent IFTs. During its first 15 years the set was very powerful. Loud volume. We would pick up Radio Ceylon, Mumbai Vividh Bharati, Radio Nepal, Bangladesh, Radio Moscow, Voice of America, BBC London and many Indian as well as foreign broadcast. The set is still with me as an antique piece and has a lot of sentimental values. I don't intend to repair it as most of the parts are not available.

The tube or valve radios (how do you call it in India) are from another time. You can repair this radios and it takes time to warm up. It was more human because earned money to repair the radios and good to the enviroment
In India FM transmission started in the early nineties.
This Radio is from 1974.
This was the last Valve radio produced by Philips India.
i have the same radio completely same it has appropriate stickers in good condition can i play fm on this this is able to play the akaashwani and pls tell if its worth anything nowdays
But nowadays all AM stations are closed, only few remaining broadcast, and another issue is very much RF interference from LED etc.

Philips Pride, Prestige, Minor and Major were Table Models of early eighties if memory serves me right. At that time Philips had stopped manufacturing Valve receivers as Transistor revolution was on and people ie masses have already understood the advantages of Transistors over Valves. Transistor receivers were known for their portability and also minimal power consumption in contrast to Valves that were voltage hungry devices. Transistor receivers are battery operated and have independent power source. Hence no electrical disturbances from voltage fluctuations. In times of severe lighting and thunder Valve receivers should be switched off, mains power and aerial must be disconnected. Not so in case of battery operated cool transistor radios....during long spells of power cuts our only source of information and entertainment was the faithful transistor radio. Time came when people used to say- Transistor radio for masses and Valve radio for classes. Yes wealthy people indeed had big 7 valve radio or 10 valve radio receivers...but the common man possessed 4 cell or 3 cell transistor receivers.

very interesting to watch your videos sir. i have a Murphy TAO 776 mk2 it was working till last month now sw 1,2,3, and mw band not catching stations.horrible sound comes. which valves should i replace. this radio is an E series one.1, valveECH81,2valve,eEF89,3 valveEBC814th valve EZ 80,5th valve isEM84. there is none here to repair valve radios. i purchased valves from karnataka.
can i change replace eloctrolytic capacitor with new 450 v0lts and 100 mfd capacitor? because i could not get 450volts 57 mfd keltron capacitor. please guide me sir. thank you.

Dials in these late Philips tube receivers seem to be easily removable, you unscrew two decorative knobs and remove the dial without disassembling anything else? Never seen such a feature an any other units.

If you are taking about IF and RF alignment, it should be done. But I dont have a singal generator. So I will do it when I get the generator. But for the time being it is ok.

@@sumitpaul9755 valve radios are big and heavy. Couriers charge will be high. Plus valve radios itself are costly, like rs 5000.
Total charge incurred will be like 6000.
Plus there is a risk of damage during shipping.
