A quick look at any celebrity tabloid magazine will show you that various celebrities like Christian Bale and George Clooney frequently wear monochromatic looks on the red carpet and elsewhere. And lets not forget the tone on tone look popularized by Regis Philbin around the turn of the millenium. It even spawned a clothing line from Van Heusen. But our question today is whether these sorts of looks have any place in the wardrobe of a gentleman who follows the tenets of classic style and if there are other types of outfits that could still be considered monochrome that are better looks.
So what are we then considering a monochromatic look to be?
Essentially, it's a look that is, again, derived from one color. However, not all elements of the outfit have to be an exactly the same color like all black or all navy, for example, and can use tints or shades of that color.
A tint is where white is added to the regular hue and a shade is where black is added. By the way, if you would like to learn more about color terminology, you can find all of that in our video on using the color wheel to assemble outfits, here.
In addition to it being a misconception that a monochromatic outfit must feature pieces that are all in exactly the same shade, it's also a misconception that everything in the outfit has to be a solid. You can incorporate patterns and textures into different garments and we will be discussing that more, later on.
So while there are some kinds of monochrome outfits that we would suggest you avoid, there are other types that can look sophisticated and streamlined.
With that said, we will go over a few key dos and don'ts of monochromatic outfits in the rest of the video.
Our first big point here, don't try to assemble an outfit using garments that are all of exactly the same shade or tint. Again, using an all black or all navy outfit, as an example, one of the reasons why you should avoid attempting a look like this is that it is going to be extremely difficult to match the blacks and navys in the same outfit between different garments. This is because different garments are composed of different fabrics and are also dyed differently. If they are not coming from the same manufacturer or are in the same fabric treated with the same dye, color won't be exactly the same even if they are generally considered to be black, navy, or other colors like that.
With that major don't out of the way, we would advocate that you do try to choose a color that is not so bold as your base color for a more monochromatically inspired outfit. So for example, instead of centering a monochromatic outfit around black, maybe you could think about using grayscale more broadly.
Also, we recommend that you wear various shades and tints of your base color in a monochromatic outfit. Varying the brightness of your source hue in an outfit is going to keep everything in the same harmonious overall mode of color but it will also provide some definition and visual interest between the various elements in your outfit.
And as we said before, do try to experiment with textures and patterns in your monochromatically inspired outfits. Again, using my outfit today as an example, the texture of my cardigan sweater adds some visual interest and my shirt has a striped pattern.
Something else to avoid, don't wear too many layers in a monochrome look. As you're trying to maintain harmony between the different pieces but also stay centered around the base hue, the more pieces you add, the more difficult it is going to be to do this.
With all that said though, our final don't today is don't feel like you have to stick the rules we've outlined, rigidly. While we do think that the guidelines we've put forward will help you to successfully build monochromatic outfits that look good, at the end of the day, you can still wear whatever you think will make you look best. After all, if what you are wearing is making you feel confident and more like yourself, that is the main objective.

I have to say, compared to most other fashion and style youtube channels, Gentleman's gazette has to be the most wholesome one. One would think that since you guys specialise in classic western menswear that your looks would be too old-timey or staid. In fact, I would say that you are one of the most experimental in terms of your fashion sense, incorporating various patterns and colours, accessories and a lot of your videos also have an educational aspect to them. The reason I say that you're wholesome is because even though you stay within your domain of fashion you don't diss people for being either more conservative or garish than your tastes, because in the end you always say that you should dress the way that makes you feel good about yourself.
Truly, I often stop halfway while watching videos of more famous youtube channels like AlphaM and Real Men Real style and whatever, because they literally stuff their own viewpoint down your throat," Oh you don't want to wear that, chicks won't like that, they'll think that you look "feminine" ". Basically ,just wear what I tell you to wear and you'll look "stylish" and "sexy", as if fashion is objective. It gives off this insidious vibe, and it really makes me dislike those other channels. In the end if you take any kind of effort into choosing an outfit, maintaining it; and feel good while wearing it, thens it's a good outfit. I don't know if you'd agree with every style of clothing out there, but the tone of your content makes me believe that you would live and let live.
Sorry for the ranting, but I just wanted to congratulate you on your success so far. I've been a follower of yours for the past two years and all the videos of yours that I have watched have all been stellar. Keep up the good work👍

It appears that way, but in another video by GG, I found a reason why. Since they already have with the material wealth they've amassed.

It's just their background and lack of knowledge. If you made a ton of money in tech or even as an actor then you probably never encountered classic style beyond just going out and buying a suit and vaguely copying what others around you wear. For a lot of men suiting up is a chore, partly because they don't spend the time to get clothes that fit well and are actually comfortable to wear.

Monochromatic outfits for men (particularly the use of black color) were set up and popularized as a trend, NOT by any "Hollywood Celebrities" AT ALL!, it has been around for centuries, actually, set up as a "trend" for upper-class men in the western world by the Spanish Royalty and the Spanish Empire at the end of the middle ages (BTW, part of history that American and British historians and people in general looooove to ignore...). A trend that was in high fashion in the upper classes in Europe for over a century. Back then, all rich and wealthy people in Europe decided to imitate the Spanish "caballeros" fashions, with their elegant and sofisticaded monochromatic costumes, until, centuries after, the French royalty, in the baroque period, came up with a more colorful and somewhat "effeminate" sense of fashions for wealthy men.

I agree. I usually try to avoid wearing more than two garments of the same color (e.g. blue jeans and a navy jacket are fine, but I wouldn't wear a blue shirt with this look), I try to incorporate more (though neutral) colors to my outfits.

Seriously, what is it with the Hollywood celebrities and this boring all-black look? They have all the money in the world to buy whatever clothes they want and this is all they can come up with?

These guys somehow time travelled from 50s and thinks their styles are the best.

I don't think time travel was available in the 50's. So if they are time travelers it's more likely that they have come from the future already knowing what occurred in fashion & style. In an effort to save mankind from an impending style cataclysmic disaster where mankind wears only lime green body suits what would later be known as the Green Man Pandemic, a courageous group of men banded together in a last ditch effort to save mankind by locating a point in the time stream to infuse our timeline with style from when classic menswear was at its peak before the tight and cropped suits and lazy dressing could evolve into the green man pandemic that ravages the world. I dunno, but I think it makes as much sense as any other commentator that presumes to know what the GG team thinks.
