This was a spontaneous action. It was the coronation-day of our King Willem Alexander. The King and Queen and their daughters were supposed to stay on the boat, but they are big fans of Armin, so they said: we want to go on stage to meet Armin. At 1:35 you see former mayor of Amsterdam Eberhard van der Laan (R.I.P.) calling the authorities to tell them what the king wanted (and probably preparing the security). It was a complete surprise for Armin, for the orchestra and for the audience. That is why everyone started to cheer at 5:23 when they saw the royal family entering the stage. This was such a special moment!
It wasn't a surprise for him. Armin knew they would be coming to shore more than an hour before it happened.

Armin told the day after on the radio, that the king invited him on his boat. But Armin said no, because he was performing..
It’s said that the king replied: if Armin doesn’t want to come to the king, the king comes to Armin

The king and Queen were so exited for this that they came too shore they were supposed too stay in the boat and so a lot of security measures had too be teken at the last minute. But they did get a lot of respect from it. And love the reaction
The grey man on 17:29 in the begining on white boat with the phone on his ear and who later sails on the boat with the king and queen ,was the best mayor of Amsterdam ,Eberhard van der Laan. He died on 5 oktober 2017 by cancer. They made a statue of him sitting on the roof on Paradiso (a famous pop temple) watching over Amsterdam. He spoke the famous words before he died: Zorg goed voor elkaar en onze stad (take care of each other and our city)❤
He was a great person with big heart for Amsterdam.
We mis him a lot. Amsterdam has never be the same.😪

I think in that same speech he also said "wees lief voor elkaar" which I think is even sweeter. That man was a real one.
That moment (the king going ashore with his family to greet Armin van Buuren), that was the first moment it was clear that Willem-Alexander was going to be a very different kind of monarch than his mother had been.
Not better or worse, mind. Just different.

It's an old video, I know, but still worth watching. Freshly king Willem Alexander and queen Maxima just walking from a boat onto a stage with their children.
Where Armin van Buuren has joined with none other than the royal Concergebouw orchestra and an enormous crowd dressed in cacky orange crowns, hats, clothes. That's pretty unique.
There was a huge schedule to do that day. Due time and security it was not the idea to get on podium but to stay on the boat. It shows how "normal" our king can be.

Yessss... I've been wanting to send some videos of the canals in Amsterdam on Kingsday. Boats everywhere... and I'm there too every year on a boat having a party. It is crazy.

Years earlier then Crown Prince and his wife (then future Queen Maxima) visited New York and met with Armin for the first time. NY was also the place where Willem-Alexander (Alexander for family) and Maxima met. The abdication of the former Queen Beatrix and coronation of Willem-Alexander was in 2013.
PS: Concertgebouw literally means Concert building.
PS 2: Willem-Alexander served in the Dutch Royal Navy and studied Water Management. Pretty handy in the Netherlands!
I was there that day in Amsterdam, on the 30th of April in 2013. It was such an amazing thing to witness and experience. The inaugural ceremony at the New Church and the abdication at the Royal Palace at Dam Square. I will never forget the feeling of being present at such an historic event.

Hi! The King already knew Armin van Buren personally. They are very ok together. King Willem Alexander has a lot of titles and names. One of the names is Van Buren. They are for a small part family. Armin had no reason to be nervous that much. Willem and Maxima like contemporary music. In the palace is more Coldplay and more recent music than classical music.

The last couple of decades there were a lot of very special and memorable events in the Netherlands surrounding the monarchy and their household.
This was one of many.
Fun fact, both the king and queen are fan from Armin van Buren.
IIRC The King and Queen met Armin also on a set in NYC before Willem Alexander became King. This day was special, a new King... wow.....
in our country any decision a judge makes is 'signed' by the Queen... in my case... all decisions before april 30th 2013 bij Queen Beatrix, all decisions after this date bij King Willem Alexander.
Every time I need those papers , I see those different signatures, it always reminds me of this day and vice-versa.
But this performance is so great, the whole day full of festivities, music, Andre Rieu also had a special concert that evening for the King, that was great too!

The old queen ruled for a long time.
Her son, our now king, has always said he wanted to be more "in touch" with the people.
He was seen drinking beer, being out in public more and during this day (his coronation/installment) he went and did a lot of things kinda of the book.
Like this moment: they were supposed to stay in the boat but he wanted to be close. So he did :)
And a lot of people respect him for being more "normal/common".
During the Olympics they have been shown on tv to have a lot of passion for the Dutch athletes.
Jumping out of their seats and cheering and all.
You are so right about going to The Netherlands to have a party! Sadly for 1,5 year there were no festivals and big crowds like in this video. And i don’t know if we can have a party like this in 2022 with covid still messing up things. Of course i hope everything is back to normal again. We waited long enough.
We can see our King with his family ones a year on Kingday. Every year he choices another city to visit and celebrate his Birthday. Then the walk through the crowed and shake hands.

The Royal Concertgebouw (concert building) Orchestra is considered one of the best orchestras in the world. Queen Maxima is their patron. The whole royal family is into art. Unfortunately they don't have a say in anything anymore, so it does not mean that the Dutch government actually treats it's musicians with respect...

This is just how we roll, we very really reserved except with football tournaments, max verstappen and koningsdag and new years then we turn into the orange legion and we are many. :D great seeing your mind blow by all these customs and traditions we have. much love from the Netherlands.
Not that it was only spontanious, he was sheduled to be at the Opera house at this time, to watch an opera with other monarchs who where waiting at the shoreline. So for all kind of monarchs of the world, including sheikhs and presidents, he showed how a monarchy in the 21st. century can be. He let them wait to party with his own people. I bet there where some monarchs from conservative countries that said to themselves "Don't show this moment on our national tv. Otherwise people can think that we have to behave like him." There are 2 days in my life i will never forget, one was 9/11 in a sad way, and there was this day in a positive way. Still get tears from watching this video.

Every year on his birthday April 27th he goes to another city and everytime where there is music The King and Queen Maxima and the 3 princesses dance and sing along, it's really nice. At the Olympic games too, they are always there to support our Dutch atletes and shout and cheer them on and of course as Dutch as he is with beer in his hand :)
Great to watch this again, we saw it on television, it was too crowded in the city. Glad we have such a king and queen they act so very normal as far as possible.

I met the king and queen and the rest of the family when they visited Dordrecht in 2015. I've also been at the babtism of ships one time the ship was baptised by the then queen beatrix and the other time by maxima.

@6:00 yes but also ... and don't get me wrong here... i don't mean its disrepectful in any way, but our relation with the royals is almost as informal as we appraoch anyone... the King, is more commonly known as just Alex, or Wim-lex, the Queen as Max, or Maxima, in some sense...and i even would say that for ms Zorreguieta ... are as Dutch as most of us in that we have a collective dislike for "pretend formality" if you want to adress formal because you want to emphasize increased respect or find it fit for the occasion we appreciate it, if you do it just because "its the CEO" or "its the king" or "its some star" we find it revolting, youll see that all over with dutch people be it the grocery owner or some celeb or indeed the royal house, in that sense we are still (though with globalization decreasing) very much a "village" where we all know eachother on a lever that feels homely and not in need of to much show.... it helps that the whole family including bea, and maybe even before that wilhelmina juliana, and also maxima and the kids are...even though very well trained in etiquette also quite spontenuous and fun loving people, i bet if it was easier to organise wim-lex would impulsively go "koek-happen" with the local street a lot more often just because it makes him smile

I respect the king, but he wouldn't be the king he is without his "Queen" Maxima. Really love to see the adorable princesses. Last Kings day we saw the future queen Amalia. I already respect her way more than her father the way she presented herself that day, being only seventeen years old. I think he is a good father, but as a king he still is clumpsy. His mother Beatrix though, different kind of species. I hope the next 27th of april will be one big feast again with parties all over the country. Let's go.
