  • held annually on the first monday in may, the met gala is fashion's biggest night and the most exclusive event in the world. this year's event had the dress code "gilded glamour", referring to the gilded age of the late 19th century. as per usual, many celebrities completely missed the mark when it came to following the theme, with some taking inspiration from marie antoinette, the regency era, and even the 1920s. in today's video we take a look at fashion from the gilded age and react to some of the outfits celebrities wore to the met gala. who had your favorite look?

Sometimes designers will gift celebrities with something to wear, and other times it’s a collaborative work, like how Blake’s was. I haven’t heard if there are many celebrities that pay for an outfit, or rather they pay and collab with the designers. All in all, mostly all of these celebrities have money to pay a designer to construct a dress for them, or collab and do research together.

I do adore her dress but personally I don't know if it's hers. You know what I mean? Personally I think she needs A: more size and support for her girls, of course it's a corset this time so there's a reason but they just looked squished and uncomfy, and proper corsetry is supposed to replace a bra and I really think they did her dirty with the support necessary. And B: something darker/more pigmented to balance out the pastels she's been bringing to the table, because her skin is so pale and it really does wash her out and it's such a shame cause she's a gorgeous gorgeous girl. She has done brilliantly with the themes tho and I'm super excited to see what she gives us in the future xx

Apparently Sebastian Stan didn’t completely miss the mark on the theme, since the gilded age was a time when new synthetic dyes were developed. The color magenta and other “neon” colors had not previously been used on clothing. Imagine the narcissism involved in trying to wear Marilyn Monroe's actual dress. Simply wearing that dress has guaranteed that it will exist for probably decades less than it would have if properly taken care of.
And you could tell it wasn't made to fit her at all. There's stress wrinkles on the hips and the bust and everything just doesn't sit right. Then there's the whole "I had to lose 16 pounds in 3 weeks to fit it." that is just disgusting considering how many people who saw that struggle with eating disorders.
I even had to explain to my sister, who said "everyone talks about Marilyn Monroe having an achievable, natural body shape, But even Kim Kardashian had to lose 16 lb to fit her dress." that Kim K had to lose 16 pounds of fat that she'd had taken out of its natural position on her body and injected into her butt, hips, and boobs, and that of course her extremely artificial body shape had to shrink in those areas to fit in a dress made to perfectly fit a natural human woman's body shape. There was no BBL back in Maryland's day to suck all the fat out of her arms and waist and shove into her hips and ass.
Just imagine ruining one of the most historically relevant items of clothing in American history only to look that mediocre in it, exactly like it wasn't made for you.

I'd like to say that Blake Lively's dress seems much more political than aesthetic. Although the Gilded age is mostly known for its aesthetic, it is actually categorized by the political and economic atmosphere in the US. A huge event that happened in the Gilded age was the arrival of the statue of liberty. One of the things it represents is freedom from oppression (shown by the broken shackles) which is ironic due to the government and economic corruption that set the basis for the categorization of the Gilded Age. So Blake's outfit is perfectly on theme and went above and beyond.

Blake Lively’s dress was absolutely GENIUS. The dress “aged” with the statue both in color and in style. When the Statue of Liberty was new it was more bronze colored, and she had the bustle silhouette to match the time period during which the Statue was new. Later when the Statue became green, the silhouette of the dress changed as well. It was no longer gilded glamour, but it was another type of glamour-old Hollywood glamour. Plus, it said “anthology” and she managed to show off two styles in one dress, somehow managing to meet all three parts of the the themes in one dress. Whoever designed that dress was an absolute genius.

Nicola Coughlan did an excellent job of taking inspiration from the period while heightening it into a more contemporary look. She did that and she managed to add her own personal touches by my making it an homage to her character in Bridgerton. You could tell she had fun playing with the theme and collaborating with her designer. She even said in an interview, "I always watch the Met at home in my pajamas with no makeup on and eating crisps, and judging them like, 'Oh they didn't do the theme very well.' So I was like, 'If I actually go, I've really got to do the theme, or what's my life been about?" The way she talks about the look and the way she carried herself at the event, it's clear that she really cared, not about showing off to the other rich people in the room but about entertaining the audience she knew would be watching.

The colors AND styles changed with the statue’s age too. At the beginning it was a new copper color, and she matches it with the bustle silhouette, then later when the statue turned green the dress’s silhouette changed to a more modern one as well. Whoever thought of that was a genius.

The theme is usually somewhat up to interpretation right, but the dress code isn’t? So white tie, high society was what I was expecting.
In that way, Blake’s dress & the transformation fit for me. I can see where different trends of fashion were used in the dress even though it wasn’t a literal dress picked from that era. You could think of it as something she might wear to a Vanderbilt costume party. lol Another person that took a trend in mind was Jessica Chastain who was dressed as a medium.

I wanna take a minute to blame Anna Wintour. She has the final say in everything the guests wear but let's them stomp around looking sloppy and off theme. She's really ticked me off the last 10 years with how she'll put anyone anywhere to sell copies of Vogue. I mark the moment I lost respect for the magazine when she put Kim and Kanye on the cover when they got engaged. That's not vogue that's tacky and it aged like milk. I remember watching a couple documentaries on Anna and how the people around her willingly admit she's all about keeping Vogue alive with the most relevant celebrities, even if it sacrifices the integrity and romanticism of fashion. There's no excuse for these celebrities to run around the MET looking so off theme and sloppy when she has the final say on what they wear. Anna is such a sellout in fear of being irrelevant and it's deteriorating modern fashion as we know it.
Side note: I do like Blake's outfit because she's so girly and I know she was excited to have a Sleeping Beauty moment. It's true to her own style but nodded to the theme enough for me to respect it. There were more on theme looks but the architecture and technology used in her garment created an iconic look. There was clearly thought and effort but into it and it was fashion forward enough so I don't mind it.

I literally couldn’t agree more. I think what’s so annoying is when celebrities think if they dress in something sparkly that is all that is required at the Met. A good example is that actress from Euphoria called Barbie in last years theme, she wore this outrageous Pearl outfit and said in the interview that when she was invited to the Met all she wanted to do was go insane with the outfit and for it to be all decked out, like đŸ€ŠđŸ»â€â™€ïž there is a theme. You can’t just wear a dramatic piece and call it a day, it has to relate in some way. I agree with what u said abt Blake as well, I feel it referred to the theme just enough that I was able to actually appreciate it.

But yall need stop trying to put artist in boxes. Just because someone is a singer or rapper doesn't mean they're not capable of doing anything else. Rihanna and Kanye are both big contenders in the fashion world. They're both talented fashion designers not just entertainers. Both have made huge impacts in terms of trends. Kanye literally interned at the Fendi house. Anything he sales instantly sell out, and multiplies in re-sale value.

300% THIS. I was so bored and upset with most of the looks this year. I actually don't mind it when things veer off into more "costume" territory. For the Met Gala, I'm looking for designers and their muses to take risks and swing big. If they go a little too far, at least we know that they were aspiring to something more avant garde, something greater than every awards season red carpet looks. Honestly, I didn't expect much from the celebrities who bought their way in; but for those invited by and dressed by A-list designers and STILL managed to completely miss the mark?? I was really quite appalled. This year's gathering was very disappointing for me.

It felt kinda off having a historical artefact such as Marilyn's dress at a celebrity event. The dress was only ever worn by Marilyn and it has been preserved like it has been frozen in that era of time. The owner of the dress should've never lent it to her in the first place as it was such a iconic piece of fashion history. If she was going to wear a replica why did she have to wear the actual thing??? Thats like a celebrity renting the Mona Lisa painting for a house party then taking it away when people start drinking and eating like it's kinda disrespectful. I'm sure it was never their intention to be disrespectful but the excuse of ignorance only goes so far.
EDIT: I just want to be clear my argument isn’t to say who is more beautiful in the dress Kim or Marilyn. My argument is a piece of historical value that is in a museum and is being looked after and preserved has been taken out for a joyride and in the process has suffered damages to that piece of historical value. A few professionals in the history area have already stated how this can be damaging to this piece and how it shouldn’t be worn as a costume you can go read those if you’d like but that’s my point my point isn’t to say who looks better my point is you just don’t tamper with historical artefacts no matter who the person is.

I appreciate the idea behind the dress but the execution was off. The fabric and the colors were not it-they didn’t go with one another, they washed out her complexion, clashed with her hair, and they made the dress look cheap. The lack of volume at the sleeves/shoulders also made her chest area look claustrophobic which was unflattering. And lastly the silly flower details on the front and back were also cheap and felt like a last minute add-on. No hate to Billie, I’m glad she stuck with the theme, but some hate towards Gucci for just not executing despite being fully able to with minor changes. Imagine if the skirt had a bit more volume, if the sleeves were puffed and in a similar material to the rest of the dress, the material was made of a sumptuous velvet or lace, and the color was deeper. Easy!
