These celebrities' explanations of the inspiration behind their looks REALLY remind me of people engaging in a class discussion on a book they never read.
YES! They have no fucking idea.
itâs like some people saying that this art piece must have lots of hidden meaning but the artist just drew for fun kind of thing đ
lmaooooo trueeee
Omg this is the one lmao I cannot with the âya know? Ya know?â âŠ.noâŠ.I donât know thatâs why Iâm asking you
Just stupid :)
It's very on theme that Americans don't know what American culture is
LMFAO this^^ A bunch of confused people claiming things as being American when those things are actually from other cultures. Just because Americans like something doesn't mean it is now theirs.
lol yep.
there is no actual american culture if we r being honest considering how diverse the place is and the history. it consists of diff cultures not just one defined one although i do agree that there could have been more creativity
@@silvergust American culture is a thing, we have American themed restaurants and markets in my country. Itâs just Americans donât bother to learn about other cultures so they donât know the differences
@@silvergust thatâs simply an excuse Americans use to claim basically everything they lay their eyes on as fair game
âPeg the patriarchyâ is just so white girlboss feminism TM
And the fact that she stole the slogan from a Black woman and misinterpreted the meaning makes it even more yt girlboss feminist
@raisa hartono
How we can know true origins?
I mean, where can i find true info?
@@notwerkinginthishouse8634 not to be rude but just look up âpeg the patriarchyâ origins⊠you get results explaining it.
@@notwerkinginthishouse8634 incase you couldnât find it still, look into Luna Matatas
The 'Patriarchy' isn't even real. Worst of all.
The thing that drove me nuts about Billie Eilish's dress was that apparently nobody at Oscar de la Renta understands that you can't just scale up a sample size super lightweight bodice and expect it to behave the same on someone curvier? Like boobs have weight; she needed stronger boning and much more support in general. The way that bodice was buckling horribly on her was totally unacceptable from an established, big name designer.
I also feel she needed a pettie coat. Maybe 2 but looked like skirt of dress was lacking shape. Skirts back then always needed a pettie coat for that shape. Barbie no different. Feel like designers who good enough for the Gala should know this. Sama as you said they should have fixed the boldest to fir her in much more flattering way.
Also the pink should have been a much brighter or deeper pink if meant be Barbi.
@@sarhahillsburg5142 its probably because its rented. Like most of the outfits are. They arenât going to put a lot of time into something thats only going to be worn for a night.
@@sarhahillsburg5142 yeah or even the classic purple pink and blue combo barbie always has wouldve been better for her skin tone. She looked washed out
Knowing what I know now based on the comment, I want to see this properly fitted for her body
period! it's unacceptable to disregard body types and make billie look bad for it!
Next year they should have a dress code where any man who shows up in a black tux has to step off the red carpet and sort through the fashion bin to find something more dramatic. Highschool can do it, and so can the met.
Everyone who attends has to submit the reason why their outfit fits the theme and the reference theyâre using, and if it isnât good enough, they donât come.
The worst of it all it's all of it is approved by Anna Wintour, she is letting that happen
Please!!! Or just refuse black or navy tuxâs
True, men needs to step up their fashion sense black tux is such a basic and quite boring look. We need something fun it's the new decade now, expected a guy could've dress something like Uncle Sam costume but more classy approach. But yeah, just black tux as always.
This could be brilliant.
Instead of people getting a change of clothes because straps are smaller than three fingers width, which could be DISTRACTING apparently, they have to wear something interesting and possibly fashionable to a fashion event. Better than wearing gym clothes for the rest of the day.
They shouldnât call it a theme, they should call it dress code and anybody who doesnât give a reasonable explanation how their outfit fit that code doesnât get in.
They should have a pre-gala beauty contest where they're judged on whether or not they're allowed in. Not because I think more celebrity events should be judgmental and superficial but because it'd force them to put some effort in
go with the majority votes?
Anna Wintour approves every outfit beforehand so i guess she doesn't actually care whether they follow the theme or not
@@fatimajameel1357
And that's the problem! Anna needs to start worrying about that blonde bob of hers, and how other magazine's have been EATING Vogue up for quite some years now. I'm sorry, but Anna shouldn't be the ONLY one to approve looks...because clearly, she's losing it.
yes, i was thinking about this exact thing. itÂŽs so disappointing how careless celebrities are about the theme.
The points you made about Cara's "peg the patriarchy" message are SO excellent!! She made it into a r*pe joke and it just came across as homophobic and feeding into the idea that penetration is the ultimate power, which is part of what makes patriarchy work... BUT, even worse, "Peg the Patriarchy" is a trademarked slogan owned by a small business owner, Luna Matatas, who has come forward to say that she did not give permission for Dior or Cara to use her phrase AND Cara misrepresented the meaning behind it!
Thank you for writing this out! I knew that the message rubbed me the wrong way and now I learn that it's even STOLEN and misrepresented! Eugh, it's just all kinds of messy and homophobic and kink-shaming.
Exactly.
if i may ask, how is it homophobic? that point is really confusing me
@@peachiichipchiii, to me, it comes off a homophobic because the statement hinges on pegging creating a power imbalance between the participants that isn't/shouldn't be there when participants are willingly involved. It implies that men who enjoy this act are "less-than" or weak.
I agree with everything! However I do think that it's really dumb for ppl to trademark a random combination of words. Objects and inventions should be trademarked, not some simple phrase
I really expected to see a lot of hippie inspired outfits considering how much effect it had on the American art culture.
Alos one of the people who really followed the theme right but arenât getting much credit is Lorde.
She looked gorgeous with that creamy silk custom piece that was an ode to Americaâs arts and crafts movement. It also gave me hippie vibes for its simplicity. But still looked extravagant
Meh
Definitely a great one imo
czcams.com/video/xkPrx1gaXJY/video.html
Indeed!! I agree on you, whereâs the hippie, maybe Jimi Hendrix kind of vibe?
Wheerreee
I agree. Lorde stuns again, bless her!
I can't believe how professional designers and stylists can be THIS uncreative.
I think the worst dress has got to be Rosé's YSL dress. I mean, simple my ass. It just looked like it was made under 5 minutes and nothing special at all. Look at Billie's dress, at least that one looked like the designers had put some effort in it.
Kind of a boring topic tho.
@@aune6770 Note that it's also a "recycled" dress, she wore it for a photoshoot before...

As for Kendall choosing Audrey for inspo: there is nothing more American than assuming that everything is, by default, American.
Yes and many made the same mistake!!
LMAOOOO!!! Well said!!

Itâs really funny that the âAmericaâ theme meant rich white people to Kendall Jenner đđđ

@@randomfornow thatâs not what I said. I meant that the theme of America canât be ârich peopleâ because that doesnât represent America. She should pick something beautiful and unique to america individually.
Just me who thinks Lana Del Rey would have absolutely SLAYED that Americana theme? Itâs literally her aesthetic itâs such a bummer she didnât attend

highkey disrespectful and evil she wasnât invited
i donât get how all these celebrities just donât care abt fitting the theme??????? like itâs literally the MET GALA how do you not have so much fun with it
Most just want to look pretty
Young celebrities just do not give a shit about rules anymore.
It used to be "cool" to have one or two rebels in Hollywood who did their own thing. But to have 90% of the Met Gala attendees not even bother trying the theme is sooooo disrespectful!!!
I must be getting old lol Can't stand these clueless young celebs who just ignore protocol now...
If a celebrity is invited by a brand or designer to the met gala, and they wear their fashion, they get in for free. Also, people just like to look rich, but cmon you're actually rich, give us something please.
My thing
especially since it's so fun to dress up
For an entire theme based on America, which has one of the most well documented history's in the world and giant amounts of pop culture references, its almost impressive, how everything turned out soo boring or out of theme.
I think cause itâs like a liberal elite coastie thing to be so disconnected to your own history. Itâs a meme that âamerica has no cultureâ as if modern music wasnât born here. Influencers bump rap or rock and donât know its roots.
As if our food isnât iconic on its own lol.
Maybe cause my family immigrated here but it always astounds me that Americans donât know the first thing about America
It's not about fashion really, it is about being an advertisement for themselves and brands to be honest
Speaks to America's uncreativity. The magic lies in the Black and indigenous community solely, whiteness just copies and plasters its face on it without crediting cultures it takes from.
@@McSnezzly interesting point, I really think itâs because Americans that were born here believe that the âAmerican wayâ of life is the standard and absolute way of living. Meaning that, we believe that what we do in America is normal and that it applies to the rest of the world (and I say that sparingly because not ALL Americans think this way) Besides the point buuuut, Iâve been guilty of it and Iâve lived overseas. Thereâs not really cultural awareness here and I mean awareness of American culture and other cultures that were brought here or formed here.
Whatâs more American than being basic though
Is it just me that gets frustrated that almost all the men show up in plain tuxedos and the women have got so much pressure too look beautiful in amazing and creative dresses/outfits?
idk if you ask me thats right on the theme of america
@@alinamohammadian8904 yessssssssssssss

America đșđžhas to many cultures and diversity to have just a theme.
It's like saying....let's have a human themed
No, the liberal elite simply rejected American fashion because they were ashamed of America. Many of the bastards didn't even use American designers.
@@delrey874 Why are you so pressed in the comments, mate? What did the Liberals do to you? Kick your dog? Step on your hamster?

I was simply stating a fact. Many of them ignored the theme and gave the work to European designers and neglected the American designers. And most liberals are afraid of being called Trump supporters for displaying their patriotism, which just makes them anti-American.
The theme was American fashion and Kim came as the great depression
Or the black page of history
But if sorta makes sense. As a fashion student, you cant really deny that Kim's sculpture and body is basically an American figure or ideal now. Coming all black meant to say that her body was the only thing that mattered and by that many other abstract interpretations can be given

I feel so relieved someone else wasnât raving about Billie Eilish. I thought the hair was terrible. It is criminal to age a young person that much just with a terrible blow out.
I also agree!! I really don't get how people liked it - her makeup was grungy and mismatched with the outfit and the supposed inspiration(s) (either Marilyn or Holiday Barbie); her hair are a horrible shade of yellow that clashes against her cold undertones, and the blowout was poorly done - as Mina said, if the inspo was really Holiday Barbie then we needed 15x more hair than that. The dress was boring and the colour coupled with her paleness did nothing for her.

Fun Fact: Before learning more about the met gala I never knew they had themes. It never occurred to me cause I from what I saw I never were able to make a connection to anything particular and no one looked like they are designing their outfits towards one theme haha
Same hahaha
Same lol
The only one that really stands out is the year where there was a theme of Catholicism/the church. Even then so many people wore whatever and called it related.
czcams.com/video/xkPrx1gaXJY/video.html
SAME BAHAHA
I have two interpretations of Lil Nas X's look besides the explanation he gave. The first is the story of American independence (shedding the royal robe, armor for the american revolution, the jumpsuit for freedom). My second interpretation is that he is dressed as iconic American figures: Liberace, C-3PO, and Elvis Presley. Liberace was gay, C-3PO was based on a gay friend of George Lucas, and there were rumors that Elvis was in a relationship with his friend Nick Adams. So if that was his inspiration that would be very smart of him lol.
Youâre definitely giving him/his designer/s too much credit there. Kudos to you though for your creativity!
czcams.com/video/xkPrx1gaXJY/video.html
Your first explanation is definitely what my brain went to!
Liâl Nasâ explanation sooooort of fit that (the âshedding the royaltyâ part especially), but even if his designer didnât realize that⊠If thereâs anything essay-writing has taught me, itâs that you can technically interpret things into almost anything as long as you can justify it (eg finding themes in media that the original creator didnât necessarily think of themselves). đ
Your second explanation is also quite cool/fitting. If itâs not what they intended, it still works!

I'm not proud of the fact that Kim K's Formal Void look was thematically my favorite. Like, approaching this theme, I too probably would have been like "THIS country? Extreme funeral wear."
this made me laugh
No cause this comment gagged me a bit
I'm so disappointed that there were no Dolly homage looks. Everyone loves to talk about how Dolly is an American icon until it COUNTS.
a dolly look wouldâve killed omg
A dolly look would have slapped. She represents (imo) a lot of what the American dream was about. She grew up poor and did everything a man could do, but in (heeled) cowboy boots - not only that, but she's given so much back to disadvantaged kids. Damn, I'm mad this wasn't realised now lmao

The fact that there were no Jackie Kennedy inspired looks is astonishing. Sheâs such a cornerstone of American fashion and pop culture!

This literally just goes to show how almost none of them did their history. Most of the clothes weren't American inspired or made, which goes to show how much America just absorbs other cultures into their fashion.
That's a good point actually
@@angelnunnart Yes. I see no problem with incorporating other cultures in fashion, in fact, it's a good way to share between cultures from my experience along with food, but... there's literally so few things American inspired that it's just questionable. When compared to other countries, it certainly feels as if the US has no culture at all sometimes (since it's a mix). This was their time to shine because of their history with fashion and they barely used it.
That makes it all the more disappointing because there are some super iconic American looks, fashion icons etc that originated in the US and were unique. But most went European or nothing
Well America is made up of a ton of different cultures, so that makes sense.
America is made of different cultures
I would like to thank you for mentioning Quannah Chasinghorse, for an event with an âamericanâ theme they lacked indigenous representation
Love her take on the 'peg the patriarchy' look. A lot of people thought it came across more as a threat of rape than empowering for women. The fact she said stick it to the man says enough. A lot of other people reviewing the met gala looks just said it was funny or made jokes. It's upsetting and I wish she got more backlash for this because it flopped so badly and it just seemed incredibly malicious.
Are we even surprised many of the attendees did not follow the theme? Aside from the occasional black and white theme of a big party in Hollywood, celebrities tend not to dress to theme, but more to show off their opulence by wearing outfits from the most "fashionable" (read: expensive) designers, paired with jewelry encrusted in precious gemstones that rival the price tag of their dress or tux. It's really just a place for them to show off their absurd wealth.
Yeah like someone else said (as a European)they tend to dress like royalty with fur or tiaras and jewels instead of following the theme
On that note billies look needed more appreciation because it was one of the few that followed the theme clearly.
Yes, but you can show off your absurd wealth AND still follow the theme. It's not that hard

@@adonaiyah2196 Agreed. I get she was cancelled so not many people want to appreciate her but she looked great and fit the theme well.
thankkkkk you for your point about the "peg the patriarchy" thing!! when i saw that outfit i was so confused at first because I went "wait, you want the patriarchy to have a good time? you want to give it sexual pleasure?" and then i realized it was meant to imply that pegging is humiliating or degrading for the receiver, which is ironically a super un-feminist message.
I honestly just find it annoying that these filthy rich celebrities are making empty statements about social justice while attending an extremely lavish event and wearing outfits worth thousands of dollars.

yesss
TRUE
This was the most intelligent deconstruction of the statement. Whole video was worth this.
actually i think that kim k was quite following the theme because even tho she masked her entire face, her body shape is STILL recognizable, we still know this is kim k because SHE is part of a certain american sub-culture (contemporary admittedly, but she is american and she marked and transformed beauty standards (by doing blackshing and middle eastern fishing but thats an another topic..) and thus the fashion industry).
Someone could've walked in with Aeropstale and Birkenstocks with puka shell necklaces and bracelets, and honestly would've understood the assignment more than 95 percent of the attendees.
I hadn't even thought about the 'implied violence' angle of cara's look but your analysis was so right. I initially didn't like it because it felt corny and hollow but couldn't really put my finger on why it felt so hollow. I'm so glad you mentioned Quannah Chasinghorse! Her look was by far my favorite of the night, between the beautiful aesthetic and its interpretation of the american theme
To me it felt hollow because she simply wrote on her clothing instead of communicating her message through the actual clothes. It felt lazy, like she took a corset, wrote something random on it, paired it with some pants and left
@@annapettit8045 Iâve personally heard the phrase well before 2015, so she might have copyrighted it, and she might even have come up with it independently, but she certainly wasnât the only one. Fairly sure I heard it in some kinky circles (in Australia, and weâre the last to hear anything) as far back as 2008.
And I do get the pun. It is sticking it to the man⊠literally. That was the point of it the first time I heard the phrase, well over ten years ago. And it almost certainly came from kinky circles, because we were the ones who know what pegging is, and itâs pretty common within F/m relationships.
Iâm with Mina on it that the idea that penetration takes away someone or somethingâs power⊠yeah, thatâs both sexist and homophobic. And itâs worse than just âF the patriarchyâ because f*cking doesnât imply penetration specifically. Though it is a bit of a shame that sex is also used to say that, but the ship has well and truly sailed on using euphemisms for sex as epithets to denote something you dislike. SOO true but they didnt even have to cross gender boundaries. Just put in some effort like they couldve done 60s or 70s, michael jackson, jimi hendrix, hair metal, classic rock, a 20s style suit, abraham lincoln, captin america, they couldve worn a fckn spacesuit lol.
Honestly... I would train myself to corset over a few years and show up to that damn MET gala wearing a proper themated dress gurl. I don't care if I'm still a dude, I will SHOW UP EVERY MAN ON THAT MARBLE CARPET.
True. Especially in the era in which they were crossing gender boundaries, it really was truly unique and groundbreaking.
right?? like i guess troye sivan tried to cross gender boundaries but did it in the most BORING black dress ever. like where's the fun??? the excitement???
Also, I feel like cishet men think it's exclusive to queer men to cross gender boundaries with fashion, but it's not!!
I was so excited for you to talk about the Peg the Patriarchy look. I follow a lot of sex workers on social media, a few of them are educators and I've learned so much from them (and UNlearned). One of my favorites (stripperwriter) basically said the same thing. Pegging is just another form of sex. It's not something you to do take over someone else, and exactly as you said, the whole penetration as control thing is from the patriarchy! Thank you so much for this thoughtful review of the looks, I learned a lot!
A statement I really agreed with was about Kim Kâs look; she was covered from head to toe to an event where people would expect her to show her body. Regardless, EVERYONE knew who she was. it just shows how much her silhouette has influenced American media. Her body is literally the epitome of America, atleast now. plus itâs Kim kardashian, that whole family built their wealth off of a sex tape. Now THAT is american
Lmfao good point
It's really frustrating how everyone seemed to miss the mark. I can think of hundreds of options to build your look around; Denim, the Southwest, football, cheerleaders, baseball, cowboys, the landscapes, astronauts, even your home town/city, Country, the Old West, the Gold Rush, Superheroes, Street wear, Hippie movement, Beatniks, Surfing, Skating, Blues, Vintage Hollywood... It seemed like everyone just disregarded the theme.

I think the reason that this years Gala pissed me off so much is because of how many attendees did NOT follow such an easy theme. Also how "influencers" like Addison Rae were invited and it brings down the exclusivity and classiness of the event.

a lot of people Really hated elliot's outfit because it could be viewed as a normal black tuxedo, but i adored it for its simplicity. it felt like a narrative of the trans experience, and even had an ode to oscar wilde (who i will say- not american but still nice to involve queer history). the ill-fitting suit was supposed to reference a teen boy's first homecoming dance or prom, where he rents or borrows a suit and it doesn't fit quite right. those dances and high school experiences are extremely american, and given this is elliot's first time on a red carpet since he began his transition, the feeling of being a young boy trying to be formal for the first time is commentary on the trans experience.
idk, i just Really adored the simplicity and quiet statements elliot made.
also, i think this goes without saying- nikki absolutely Killed it with her tribute to marsha p. johnson. the dress was stunning, and especially considering nikki isn't american and was so unbelievably on theme? we love to see it. by far, she was my favorite met gala outfit this year.
Love this! This video and comments like yours are the best Met gala analyses I've seen. I started losing interest until content like this showed up in my feed. Thanks for sharing â€
I did like Elliot's suit's simplicity and message--I just wish it was on theme. As nice as the Oscar Wilde reference was, he was Irish
@@Robin-of2jt LMAO yeah me too. It was super confusing to me that an Oscar Wilde -inspired outfit was here at an American themed gala. His famous trials took place in England... and had nothing to do with American laws against homosexuality.
very cool analysis I see you are a person of good words, my best wishes to you my friend â€ïžđłïžâđ
As an European I feel like Americans, in this case American celebrities, really associate big important gala events with European royal events. I mean, generally speaking, these kinds of events always include large trains, capes, opulent jewellery, with large precious stones, fur, velvet, sometimes even tiaras, etc. To me, these are not american dress code characteristics but rather royal European ones. America never had monarchies and aristocracy so I feel like this is America's way of having a little taste of it (as in very rich famous individuals dressing fancy for an event, except they are not royal, they are pop celebrities). That explains why, when important themed events happen (like the MET gala) american celebrities have such a hard time following the theme and, instead, just dress fancy. I've never been to the USA but when I think of the country what immediately comes to my mind is MCDonald's, Coca-Cola, old Hollywood and noir movies (femme fatale), pop art like Andy Warhol, the hippies in the 60s and Woodstock, 50's fashion (saddle shoes, blue jeans and leather jackets, the highshchool girl stereotype), american diners and milkshakes, cowboys, WW2 american fashion, the american flag and eagles. Not huge diamond necklaces and ball gowns and capes. Not to mention how men at this year's MET gala totally missed the chance to dress like Elvis Presley... Anyway, love your content Mina!
Interesting point!
you have a point.
Oh, dear lord, they did really miss the chance to dress like Elvis Presley. I'm gonna cry
well said lol like there was so much space to be creative and its just sad to see everyone miss it
Thiss
âPeg the Patriarchyâ definitely feels like it was chosen because of alliteration without considering any of the subtext it brings with it
Came here to say this
i thought it meant fuck the patriarchy tbh
it feels like something that would be on a shirt from forever 21
â@@starsickkk It does but 'fuck' tends to have broader connotations than equating sexual penetration to having the upper hand which is what was implied here thus echoing the quintessential misogynistic rhetoric
I think thereâs more way to look at it, queering hetero cis males often involves liberating their anus etc, read paul preciado
Since you mentioned how pivotal jean/denim was in american fashion, I definitely think CL was one of the best looks of the night (in terms of both theme & style)
With regards to Caraâs look âPeg the Patriarchyâ is a movement trademarked and founded in 2015 by Luna Matatas and yet again a big designer ripped off an independent creator, diluted the meaning behind it and gave zero credit - *sigh*
I'm surprised cowboys (or frontier), Italian-American mafia, pirates, literally anything associated with "the American Dream" (1950s nuclear family, immigration, etc.) was not more prominent in this year's Met Gala. As a non-American, these are the things I think of first when I picture American fashion history.
Everyone had SO MUCH to work with and they flopped.
I think that J-Lo went for a western cowboy look, but i wasnât really impressed by it
I kinda think that pirates are more a British thing, the corsaires and their golden age (1640-1720). I mean, as a brazilian i have heard a lot of stuff about
British corsaires invadind our coast during XVII-XVIII.
But you are right, they had a huge opportunity and just threw it away
For a literal celebrity event there was a surprising lack of any california gold rush themes. Like one of the simplest concepts for any one of these celebs who all own houses in LA, throw a bunch of gold and western themes together and yet WHERE IS IT??? Where is my bling cowboy look. I am so sad.
Same, and I'm also non-(north) American, maybe football uniforms, quaker, Mahalia Jackson, Warhol, idk, American culture has been worldwide spread, yet Americans themselves seem to not even want to be there, it's a shame.
I would have LOVED to see Lana at this met gala. This was HER theme đ
First thing I thought đ€§ so freaking sad
100%
same she would've slayed
Yassss:'(((
Now that you said it, yes so true. She would have appeared as herself or maybe 60s/70s LA old hollywood inspo â€ïž
When I heard this year's theme, I was excited to see how celebrities would take inspiration from the American culture as it is so diverse and has evolved so much over the years. They could've made references to artists, music genres, architecture, sports... Yet, most of them decided to go for the most generic looks and tried to give a last-minute explanation to why they were on-theme. My favorite was definitely Quannah Chasinghorse's.
Shout out to miss Diné nation lmfao
I liked Grimes look the best! It was so elegant and unique. As for the theme,, she did say it was Dune inspired, an American book. Also sci-fi kinda fits because America's space race in the 60s.
im so glad you pointed out the "peg the patriarchy" thing, im gay and it struck me as homophobic but most critics didn't understand enough to point out the misogynistic/homophobic implications
Not only that, but it was such a stupid non-statement. 'Consensually anally penetrate the patriarchy' is pretty much what it means. Whatever massive statement she tried to make, she didn't execute.
@@dashingtherouxthesnow4017 Literally there's a reason the saying is "F*ck the patriarchy." If someone ran over my foot I'm not saying "Peg you." Grammatically it's off and it also adds a sexual element to it that is not needed.

@@AlexStraza which itâs worst. I mean, they have money to choose whatever they want but instead they prefer a sponsor to define the look.
I'm so upset there was no western wear look. As a texan, western wear can be so classy, sexy, and opulent when done properly. As a Latina, western wear is such a big part of Mexican American and it would've been so cool to see it at the Met
Fellow Texan here and I agree!!!
Why is literally anyone talking about Nikkie's outfit?! It was just PERFECT - and had a good inspiration
UGH I completely agree about Billie's dress - yes, the silhouette is dramatic but the tulle in that specific beige on her skin washes her out AND any detailing on the dress like the stitching on the corset. It's also boring to me because there's no texture, and it's cute and fun but certainly not a jaw dropping spectacle of fashion. If anything, I suspect a lot of the hype about how good she looks is the residual shock that Billie can indeed do whatever the f*** she wants, but honestly at this point, her choosing to wear a dress shouldn't be a big deal on it's own merit.
thankss i really dont like the beige colors in her because she looks so plain and i feel like the blond doesnt compliment her either and everyone is loving her because its a nice dress (just not met) she is cute and the rest was so underwhelming
I thought she looked amazing, but considering it was the effing Met Gala, yeah her look was extremely underwhelming. Certainly not the worst, but not as amazing as people are making it out to be
she looked horrible , washed out , old, bad hair
She looked like Hillary Clinton let's be real they did her so dirty.
Like Billie eillish is like 19 years old right? I do agree w mina about her hair being done up better to fit a more 40s or 50s Hollywood stow but like damn she looked hella glamorous.
I wish more of these people would actually do more research, why do Americans always assume everything is American? There's some beautiful fashion history in America as well as beautiful fashion icons, I'd love to see people do looks based on them and actually doing things properly. It's really frustrating that people just assume all fashion icons are American

One of my favourites was Nikkietutorials' Dress. Dress was Was a tribute to Marsha p. Johnson đ I almost cried it was so amazing and wholesome!
this year's met gala reminded me of my senior prom where the theme was gatsby, and i was the only one who showed up in a flapper dress :/
Lil Nas actually had the perfect outfit if he just interpreted it differently. Firstly shaking off the oppression of King George the third and the revolutionary war, secondly the overwhelming presence of Americaâs military around the world and the use of reduction of simple rights (higher education, healthcare etc) to force underprivileged people into the military. And the last outfit showing that people are progressing and allowing everyone to have the freedom to be themselves. He just talked a whole heap of crap when asked the inspiration.
Facts lol
that is how i originally interpreted it as well. itâs disappointing to see that the true inspiration was much more shallow.
America's military never had armor like that đ not even in the beginning. American military for the 2nd look would have been extremely easy for him to reference but he clearly just picked out ooh shiny and ignored the theme. If he'd done that it would have been way more powerful especially with politics of queer rights in the military but... smh he didn't think about them.
@@lshardy1up it would be an interpretation, a re-imagining if you will.
His outfit looks like Taurus Aldebaran armor, look it up LMAO
Omg this point about Caraâs âpeg the patriarchyâ look is so excellent I canât even. Something about the statement rubbed me wrong that I couldnât identity, and Mina hit the nail on the head.
fr tho, very well explained
yeah it gives the same vibes as ppl @ protests yelling "all cops have small dicks"......like I get that yr tryna say cops suck but you're also buying into sexism n misogyny and there a million other things you could say that WOULDNT do that so you choosing that outta everything lets me know yr ignorant.....
@@Supiel well said!
Ok I might be wrong here or maybe it's just me (please don't come at me I don't mean to offend anyone) but her statement kind of reminds me of people who think that gays/queers? who prefer to bottom during "hooha" are/should always be the submissive or more "femme"? One in the relationship. Which isn't always the case. I dunno I could be wrong, it just crossed my mind.
Peg the patriarchy is funny when ironic, but as a statement...
caraâs outfit was so annoying, and i am so happy mina talked about it! it is a recurring theme amongst white women to often use very shallow phrases like âpeg the patriarchyâ or âgirls support girlsâ that often push dangerous rhetoric, and hurt women of color often.
UUGH lil nas xâs look couldâve fit the theme so perfectly, had he made the three outfits analogous not only to to the journey heâs had in his career but the progression of America over time. He couldâve done the monarchy that controlled America, the revolution sprung up from new ideals of freedom, and the later degradation of those ideals(although I donât think that would be too well excepted at an event as bourgeois as the met gala). He couldâve done pre-modern, modern and then post-modern in a similar way to what I just described, something that was inspired by the role that African slaves played(perhaps the king, the revolutionary, and the revolutionaryâs slave who made the entire thing work by singlehandedly upholding the economy), there are just so many interesting directions he couldâve taken this idea, especially considering the theme and it made me so bummed that it was so simple!
No one is talking about how Olivia Rodrigo said her inspiration was american punk rock music and she thinks Saint Laurent did a great job representing it. I literally can't stop thinking about it, like where is the punk?
her outfit reminds me of the mom in beetlejuice lol
it gave fashion nova
Most ppl dont seem to know what punk is đ„±
her outfit was one of the worst tbh
also why would someone want to represent punk at the met gala?
I didn't see the big deal about Billie either. Her dress had a long train yes and was big... but it was so simple? It was so general and could've been anything. It's more glorified prom dress? It was her first gala but considering the looks she's pulled out before, I was hoping she would've done more with this look. Same can be said about others. This year makes me miss the 2018 gala.
She admitted she has always wanted to dress this way so tbh it just goes to show unfortunately she is pretty basic, she was just using street wear to hide (which sucks) and now she doesnât feel the need to she is down to get basic. Itâs a big loss but there are loads of other super talented folk out there with actual fashion sense so at least we can focus on them more. WOC killed it with their looks at the Met this yeah, which was fun to see.
Itâs because weâre not used to seeing her dressed like that
She so overrated I think sheâs gorgeous and deserves her fame but I donât think she does anything that extraordinary.
Needs yknow a BULLET BRA
the way it blended into her skin and hair looked weird and boring to me
Billie's dress was gorgeous, but I wasn't in love with the peach colour. I know it's her new theme, but I would have been blown away by a blood-red or even a navy colour
All of your takes were spot on, you articulated everything I felt. My favorite looks were Lupita Nâyongo, Quannah Chasinghorse, Ciara, and Simu Liu.
Billieâs look just felt âyou could do betterâ like I felt the dress couldâve been a better colour if she was going for holiday Barbie I wish she went for a more bold colour. Generally I wish people went more bold, even if someone wants to wear a suit maybe have it be a different colour or material, or a cut thatâs more unique like an asymmetrical hem, I donât hate a black suit but what bothers me is when itâs just plain, Eugene Lee Yangâs look was a pretty plain suit (because his dress fell through) but he added enough to it that it upped the look
The color to me just feels... meh
Honestly people were complimenting her a lot but to me, the dress looks like the quinceañera dress that my cousin wore.
I was especially disappointed in her look. Especially since in the past she was voicing more critical opinions and puts a lot of thought into her own art, I imagined she would wear something a bit more impactful. To me it feels like she just wants to fit her new aesthetic.
Yes! She's so pale and the dress and hair combo just washes her out. Plus I really didn't like the shape of the dress. She wasn't giving me Marilyn.
@@sophie9984 same. I thought she would've worn atleast a bolder color. She can ofc wear what she wants and feels comfortable in but her new aesthetics is just that beige color and I was a little dissapointed that she brought that color to the met

Genuinely wish more of the men would do literally anything. Lil Nas x really shows everyone how to do that, even if it's not entirely on theme
The met gala would be much cooler if they showcased more independent artists and allowed people who actually care about the themes to come
Ikr.....people with creativity should have given chance.there was so much they could have done.but sadly its just pr and publicity for celebs rather than showing creativity or talented designers

The designer's name is Michael Sylvan by the way
When that actress told the reporter that she's wearing Chanel and that was her inspiration, several brain cells called quits.
The Navajo model and Navajo Themed Gown made me feel so happy. Especially seeing somebody think Native American when tasked with making an american look
can we talk how and why Lana wasn't there tho her whole aesthetic is America and being American wtf
I wish people talked more about CLâs unexpected attendance. Her ensemble was beautiful and the way she incorporated korean heritage was magnificent
Right!! She was one of the only ones that actually followed the theme!
Using jeans was super Clever of her
She was my favorite!!
CL ate!
Unfortunate that she wore Alexander Wang who has multiple sexual assault allegations against him.
I absolutely LOVED Lupita Nyong'o's look. I thought the denim gown was executed beautifully. Maybe wearing denim for American culture is a bit cliche, but when it's done so well it hits perfectly
Yesss!! She looked absolutely stunning, I'm sad there aren't more people talking about it.
Not cliche at all. She chose denim as an acknowledgement of slavery (denim is cotton)....her hair was inspired by African American artist, Lorna Simpson
SAME!!! And the Indigenous look too. Both were incredible
Just a funny bit of info: denim means "de NĂźmes" so it's French ahah
But still it was Hollywood celebrities who made it fashionable so it's on theme â

Lil Nas X. He should have explained that the clothes were representative of the American revolution. The first look is royalty, stemming from the ENglish monarchy ruling over the colonies. Then the armour is representative of the period of war the revolutionaries had between each other and the monarchy. And the third one could be I guess modern America. This is just an interpretation.
I saw Caras outfit before and didnât even realise the messed up message behind it, thanks for bringing that up! I personally took it as an encouragement for changing the power dynamic between genders but what you said made me see it in a complitely different light

One of my favorites was A$AP Rockyâs quilted coat. Funny enough I think his look was much more on theme than Rihannaâs. Quilting is a huge part of American history and African-American history as well. The designer, ERL, mentioned how they took fabric from lots of different sources, like vintage fabrics, scraps and even their own fatherâs bathrobe to make the piece. This is exactly how quilting came to be and I think itâs a great artistic reference.

I've been saying this but for slightly different reasons. She definitely used a 60s Marilyn reference for her hair and makeup, I know the photoshoot so well and I didn't love it on Marilyn let alone for this.
