I can appreciate that inside Gandalf’s little sphere of light there’s no sound, quiet and peaceful, while the darkness outside is loud and unsettling.
Not to mention the light is perfectly shaped while the dark has no shape at all.
Interesting fact: When Gandalf (then Olórin) was chosen to be one of the Istari, he didn't want to go, because Sauron scared the crap out of him. He didn't think he'd be strong enough to combat such a foe. The Valar said it was this humility that made him the perfect choice.
@@smangy5442 Yes you do
Eh...not exactly true. Sauron didn’t “scare the crap out of him” necessarily at all. He felt himself much weaker than Sauron, sure. but mostly just humbly felt simply far un-worthy of such a task.

The movies really nailed Sauron. He is not just a villain, he is evil itself.
And it's good that they did not show too much of him. Just Silhouettes, in Armor or in Form of the Eye. Otherwise he would have lost much of his menacing presene.
Plus he is one of the very very rare type of villains of "serous pure evil". There are no jokes at his expenses, he has no funny moments and so on. Sauron is almost in every scene he is potrayed as an intimidating force.

this part stuck with me. It is such a gorgeous and masterful shot
I don't remember if I saw this movie in theaters, but when Sauron began speaking, his voice rumbled wherever we had been watching this movie. I absolutely love villain voices, and those few words there sent chills down my spine.
Yeah same haha, Inoukianaln, burzum nul naldjidar.
I liked the old voice better. Cumberbatch's voice for Sauron is too high pitched. Maybe it would have been better if PJ decided to use Cumberbatch's "Smaug" voice for Sauron.
Loved this scene; everything about it was a perfect demonstration of a villain. Gandalf demanding to know where the Necromancer was, desperately hoping it wasn't who he thought. A wave of darkness that tauntingly feels around Gandalf's shield of light, letting him think momentarily he has a chance, then in a single hit, completely shatters the shield. An unseen force lifts him and forces him to watch the unspoken nightmare that has plagued thousands of people so long ago; the return of the Enemy slowly approaching him, each step demonstrating how he has only grown in power since his triumph over death.
And don't forget the new eye design.

Notice how the Light takes a sphere shape but the Darkness has no form. It resembles Order versus Chaos. Creation versus Destruction
Calvin Kinz that’s an amazing insight
Day versus night. Magento versus doctor strange. Holmes versus holmes.
It’s fitting because Sauron craves for order, as his Master Morgoth, the former Valar and first Dark Lord, craves ruin and destruction, Sauron is driven by order, admiring the Elves most of all.
His original plan was to bring unity to Middle Earth through the Rings of Power, as they originally intend to control the leaders of each race, allowing Sauron to rule through them
But the Elves foresaw the treachery and took off their Rings, the Dwarves the most resilient of the races, resisted his control but became greedy, most of the Dwarf Rings were lost or destroyed
Only the 9 rings of men were successful, creating the Nazgul
To Sauron the Orcs, Darkness, were all means to an end to achieve Order under his control
Also a sphere has the most volume per surface area so it’s technically the most stable too

He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
Are you saved? Where will you go when you die? Heaven or hell?
The Gospel, which means the Good News is the news that God Almighty, the Creator came in the flesh as Jesus Christ to take away the sin of the world. The one God is a trinity of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. The Son came and laid down his own life to save ours. His sacrifice on the cross paid the price for our redemption with his own blood. On the third day he rose from dead and offers the gift of salvation and forgiveness to those that repent and trust in him. Although God's creation was created perfect, having no death, sickness and disease, the creation became corrupted through Adam and Eve in them disobeying God. In this rebellion the creation became fallen through the curse of sin and mankind became separated from God. This world is fallen, but God offers reconciliation to him through his provision at the cross. Ultimately God will restore his creation to perfection when he returns but those that who reject his offer of redemption will remain condemned by their sins and go to hell.

I always thought it was really cool how this scene was done. Sauron's weak and fragile spirit still held more power than Gandalf, but it was a struggle for Sauron at this point with how weak his Spirit is without the Ring.
Perfect voice, visual effects of shadow and sound effects for Sauron: Faithless and Accursed.
I actually want to see an alternate reality of LoTR where Sauron actually gets the One Ring in his hands and what kind of power would be released.
If this scene shows a weakened version of Sauron, then I can only imagine how powerful he would be with the ring.
Yet he was almost killed by a hound of Oromë
He held more power because his powers were not diminished. In the book commentaries to the Lord of the Rings, Istari (magi, mages) are the Maiar, who took the flesh of humans as their form to diminish their own power and thus to avoid the battle of Powers and the second destruction of Arda. Therefore one Maya in human form could not overcome a dark Maya (be it Balrog or Sauron). Gandalf managed to fight off and destroy Balrog but died in the process. In 1vs1 battle with Sauron spirit Gandalf also lost.
@@darkner2390 None of you fools read the books then. Gandalf and his council are NOT allowed to utilize their full strengths. They are only supposed to be a guiding force for the lifeforms of Middle Earth. The Istari were at max allowed to use MAYBE 30% of their capability. I love how the smoke / mist moved with Gandalf as he was flung against the wall - it was like there was a big spectral arm literally slamming him down, then up against the wall.
That's correct that is indeed saurons arm doing that he dose have that power
Rather than calling him "Wizard", it would have been cool if Sauron had called Gandalf "Olorin."
It would have been sick, but I think calling him “wizard” despite knowing Gandalf’s true identity as a Maia was a way to mock and belittle Gandalf, both for hiding in a limited form pretending to be a mortal ‘wizard’, and for being less powerful than he.
"I was the Olorin of my youth in the forgotten west"
He should have called him some random name like ”Klampfendorf!” Just to waste some of Gandalf's brain cycles trying to figure out what the heck is going on.

2:32 best version of Sauron's theme. Same one that plays during the Minas Morgul scene in Return of the King.
zs23100 I know, the best one
I know, right? When I heard it again, I had chills!
epic
So it begins. The great battle of our time.
No it's not the same one. You mean the same motif. Howard Shore is known to 'reuse' the same motifs in creating the music of TLOTR to evoke familiarity in reference to certain themes. In a way yes it is the same. But more like a different piece that works around the same motif.
2:37 Let's just appreciate that shadowy giant arm for a second.
I never even noticed it takes the shape of an arm…
Damn that’s cool
"There is no light, wizard .. that can defeat the darkness" still echoes in my ears since I've watched this in cinema. What a scene!!!
When I heard the Minas Morgul theme, I immediately knew who the Necromancer was. I was so hyped to see Sauron return in the Hobbit trilogy.
Never fight your enemy in their place of power. Sauron's spirit had already infested the area, so Gandalf was under attack from all sides.
That was never Gandolf's motivation for what he did.
@@tigqc, I never meant to state anything about Gandalf's intentions, but since you brought it up: Gandalf could have continued his attempt at fleeing, but instead he chose to defy the darkness. Note that towards the end of the duel, he walked towards a collapsed bridge, and not away to relative safety (and yes, I am assuming this was not the only way out). In that moment of defiance, what was Gandalf trying to accomplish except maintaining the conflict? He may have not known at that moment that he was facing Sauron, but he was still opposing a dark spirit that had clearly claimed this area as a domain.
Gandalf as a Maia spirit was always a little afraid of Sauron and never certain he could match him. The Ring once he made it gave him a boost. But Galadrial taps into dark magic that Gandalf will not and gave Sauron a but kicking in the next movie
EdricLysharae I think Gandalf’s motivation was to discover who the Necromancer was and to ultimately expose him. Ever since the earlier discovery of the Morgul blade, he had a sneaking suspicion that it was indeed Sauron residing at Dol Guldur but he wanted to be absolutely sure. He knew he was walking into a trap but the guaranteed abduction that was sure to take place would summon more powerful beings who could ultimately go toe-to-toe with Sauron once he was exposed. The wizard turned himself into a “sacrificial lamb”...as he knew no one else had the time, will, or interest to investigate. His choice to remain inside of the fortress after confronting Azog (while reckless on the surface) was brilliant as he forced Sauron’s hand. He could have continued fleeing with the minimal information he had acquired from the Pale Orc...but hearsay wouldn’t be enough to sway Elrond and Saruman as after all...Orcs were known to take over abandoned fortresses for their own nefarious needs and as such...they would not be any real threat without a powerful leader to organize them. He would need to hear it straight from the horse’s mouth and thus; Gandalf had to find the source of the evil as well as be 100% certain that it was indeed the Servant of Morgoth. That took some serious guts if you think about it as he knew the result of the coming face off would be be capture, torture, and eventually death. Just my thoughts. God bless!
Gandalf went armed with a device of Saruman's making and simply drove Sauron out.
I remember seeing this in the theaters when it just came out. I never read The Hobbit so I thought that this Necromancer was a new villain that Peter Jackson created specifically for the movies. But when the music began at 2:20 I then realized that it was something much more sinister than a man dabbling in dark magic. At 2:50 I was stunned to realize that the Necromancer was something that was greater in evil and power, one whose ring held the fate of the entire free peoples of Middle-Earth: Sauron. I remember a lot of people gasping when they saw him. I was not prepared to see him after 10 years since The Return of the King. In my opinion this was one of the best scenes of the film.
Damn it was so sick seeing sauron in the theater when this came out. I remember reaching into my bag for a can of pepsi and as soon as i heard the Minas Morgul theme my nipples went hard.
The detail on this one
That went from 1 to 100 real quick
in reverse, now anytime someone mentions the minas morgul theme, mine will invariably go soft
You know movie theaters are businesses, too, and concessions are a significant portion of their income. You wouldn’t pack a Pepsi in your bag and break it out at a restaurant. They respectfully ask for no outside food or drink be brought in. Come on, Michael.

This scene was so well made. We all know he survives because of lord of the rings and yet I will still do freaked out for Gandalf the entire time. I can’t believe people talk bad about the hobbit trilogy
I personally love it and I see this film as the best of the 3 not to mention it being an equal if not better than the first two LOTR films. I think maybe the 3rd film strayed too far from Bilbo's story but it was still epic
Gandalf is actually a demigod/lesser angel (whatever denomination best suit your style) and thus cannot be killed. Even tasked with guidance for middle earth with very diminished power, his mortal shell is a vessel. Once destroyed he'll come back to continue his task. Sauron knows this and would rather have him forever stay a prisoner to render him useless.
@@Furyel2 It's not a given that he would come back, because his spirit would go back to the undying lands. the valar would need to send him back again
Darth memeboi it’s morally wrong to say it is equal/better than the first 2 LOTR

One was taken by Saruman in orthanc.
Hearing the Minas Morgul theme again gave me goosebumps especially how amazing this scene was, seeing Sauron on the big screen again.
Sauron is a magnificent character for sure. He was a lieutenant of Morgoth until the first age of the sun. Then, when Morgoth was defeated by the Valar, he got to scape and was capable to maintain her kingdom of horror in the second and third ages in Middle-Earth. Even the most powerful elves like Elrond and Galadriel feared him. In this scene, he wasn't with full strenght yet, but he defeated Gandalf breaking his staff to show his superiority in power.
I really don't like that about the movies. Staffs are breaking left and right. In the books only once did a staff break and that was Saruman's staff at the command of Gandalf the white.
@@baledain Hear hear, the idea of staffs breaking so willy-nilly annoys me too, it's the badge of office of the Istari, not easily broken. to say the least.
@Erin B There's alot of thing that don't make sense in movie. But i still enjoy them :P
He didn't escape the Maia who lend the assault on Morgoth, told him to ask forgiveness and repent to the valar in valinor, but Sauron was to ashamed and stayed in middle-earth... Then as time past he became evil again, I think because the corruption of Melkor in Arda never vanished.
Except this never happened in the books. Gandalf wasn't captured or defeated by Sauron in a weakened state and when the White Council comes to Dol Guldur, Sauron simply flees.
The sound design in this scene was incredible. Especially in cinema.
I love how his semi fiscal form is levitating within the all seeing eye. It's shows you just how powerful he is and confirms he was not just the form of an eye during the events of Lord of the Rings. (The eye is not Sauron himself but a part of him)
It's basically a magical spell that allows Sauron to see what he wants and keep a tab on things. Kind of like the palantir used by Saruman and Denethor.
@@tehdipstick In the books the "Eye of Sauron" is a metaphor for his intelligence network of birds, beasts, and informants (both willing and unwilling). They included the detail at 2:25 of his missing pointer finger which was the finger that held the ring in the Fellowship
I remember seeing this in the theater, the amount of goosebumps when he showed himself..
Seeing Sauron in his armor was the best part
1:35 Gandalf : " SAVE YOUR DEATH AND YOUR DESPAIR , I AM NO USE FOR IT "
2:28 Sauron: " Gandalf. Your Staff is Broken"
imagine seeing this on a 60 foot IMAX screen with rock concert-level audio .. imagine dropping 2 hits of LSD an hour before showtime.. well, I did it. Sauron melted my face off and I have never been the same since.
I was fully sober but it was so dizzying and mesmerising to see Sauron displayed like this. Could not help but keep staring and was in awe and terror at the whole thing.
i fell asleep
Gandalf is definitely my favorite character in the trilogies!❤️
Mine too!!❤❤❤❤
When Gandalf was acid tripping on Sauron's darkness and evil!😂🤣
You can not hide! There is no life in the void! Only death!
0:12 it looks and sounds like he sneezed 😂🤣
1:20 Gojirraaah!
uexplorer XD
Omg 😂😂🤣👏
Japanese sauron
2:22 now thats an entrance
Gandalf, why are you casting magic missile? There's nothing to attack here.
Umm, I'm attacking the darkness!
This is dispel magic. Thats kinda how you deal in magical areas.
"Are there any girls there?"
Sorry shield spell.
Summoner!?!
We can do it!
The funny thing is that this depiction is actually closer to Sauron from the books than the LOTR trilogy because the books implied that Sauron had a physical body.
... watch extended edition part where Aragorn speaks with Sauron through palantir and you should be satisfied about that.
Its not closer to the books because he's intentionally supposed to be a faceless evil like satan
This is one of my favourite, even one of top 10 scenes in Peter Jacksons Middle earth. Here's why:
-Dol Guldur looks amazing as a dark fortress, long vines and thorns growing over the walls, the ruined towers and pillars, you can tell no one has been here in thousands of years likely, and so it really seems eerie
-We see more of gandalf's magic here, he manages to break the spell of concealment, and it really shows the power the Necromancer has over the place, that he can hide the orcs so when it's broken they materialise out of nowhere
-The sound of Mordor is amazing, really seems menacing
-Sauron is shown here as godlike, which he is, he has no true form here and appears first as a mass of darkness, then a flaming hand, then as a flaming body in armour, he really seems dangerous and otherwordly
-He's perfectly shown as a villain, no monologue, no evil laugh, he speaks only when needed and he's completely evil, Gandalf shows dread and fear here
-Gandalf and Sauron battle with light and dark, perfectly representing him
-Gandalf looks epic like you'd imagine a wizard to be
-The way Sauron walks is great, you can't tell if he's physical form or merely a spirit, but he's calm and delibrate, no rashness
The way there's no jokes here, it really feels serious and dark.
-Continuing from the point, it works to show the scary and darker side of Middle earth, that really is needed since if not it would be too easily generic as good and cartoony evil, here you truly have dark places and evil, Sauron saying in the void there is only death is brilliant.
The visuals of this scene are on point. Small touches that remind you that for all their faults and flaws the Hobbit triology was made by Peter Jackson
Oh halbrand. How much you have changed 🤣
00:28 "sharku" is actually one of the few canonical words of the orc language that was also present in the books. Orcs referred to Saruman as "sharku" too.
Sharku or "Shalokû"
Sauron's appearance has to be one of the most dramatic entrances in Cinematography
I never noticed that the smoke takes the form similar to Sauron’s armour when gandalf is slammed to the wall. A great touch
As evil and wicked as sauron is... i find him quite beautiful
Oof the cadence in Sauron's voice in this part always gets me!
That’s gotta be one of the most badass scenes in the hobbit franchise
Gandalf's staff maker be like
*"That's the last one for you, buddy!"*
Gandalf lost 3 staves in all six movies.
Sauron is so crazy strong and still he is a low level on the godly scale. Imagine how strong Melkor was.
2:19 Awesome
The fear Sauron makes into Gandalf's eyes and heart is just terrifying, it's like Chaos itself has shaped into something that even half-gods are afraid to face.
Your thinking in the theatre the first time watching this Gandalf is gonna win but then it turns out to be sauron what an epic moment
Gandalf legit pulled a flashbang on the Orcs.
Say whatever but on every TLOR movies, Wizard combat is awesome.
Level 1 Gandalf: no mana
Level 99 Sauron: +10 against light, +10 weapon break, +5 flame Aura, Infinite mana, +10 trash talk.
Shees... If this is Saurons power, I wana c my man Morgoths power.
Morgoth was indeed more powerful, but he diluted his power to his servants. His monster armies was far more powerful
Than Sauron’s. Smaug was an arguable remant of that army and he was nearly invulnerable
Morgoth was also more of a brute as his goal was basically to corrupt and ruin creation to spite Eru Illuvatar, his blazen atrocities caused the Valar to interfere and imprison Morgoth in the Earth
Sauron even at his height may not been more powerful than Morgoth, but he was more dangerous because he was more cunning and patient
Sauron expanded his power with the One Ring and used his cunning to outwit or destroy his enemies
The prime example was Numenor, the then greatest Kingdom of Middle Earth
Sauron then having his One Ring, could have destroyed it if he wanted to, but instead he did worse to it, he despite his power surrendered to Numenor, and played on their pride in capturing him
He became from a prisoner to adviser of the King and seduced the Kingdom to worship himself and Morgoth. They fell so horribly the Valar Interfered and destroyed Numenor with a flood, denying Sauron their allegiance, but he still won in destroying. Numenor as an enemy,
Even when he lost his power and body, he plots and rebuilds his armies as the world thought he was gone, and Nearly succeeded conquering Middle Earth without the Ring
That highlights how much s threat Sauron was, Morgoth would simply destroy and corrode everything, Sauron would see the whole world is conquered with free will stripped, and he had the will to do it, only stopped because of plot armor and meddling heroes lol
Alternate title: Old man groan ASMR for 3 and a half minutes.
This scene has even more weight when you remember in the books, Gandalf admitted he was afraid of Sauron. Yet he showed no fear
He’s showing plenty of fear.
It's a good scene but the extended version with Thorin's father, Thrain. Man.... that's something else!
Going into it, Gandalf was at a great disadvantage. He was in one of the enemy's strongholds of power. Sauron's spirit was already established and had permeated the place like a sickening miasma; thus Gandalf's Will was under attack from all sides. And being among the Istari, Gandalf's greatest strengths were never in his raw offensive power, but rather to give others his wisdom and his ability to strengthen the resolve of allies against evil. It was an amazing scene to see two elder Maia battle using their Will.
Not only that, but Gandalf is pretty much limited to using defensive magic here; which is all he uses, a shield. Gandalf using his magic offensively against Sauron would not only be a direct violation of his mission, but also could have catastrophic effects on the world. Fighting the Nazgul caused what appeared to be a powerful storm. Going on the offense against Sauron would do damage to an entire area. So all he could do was hold Sauron's offensive magic off for as long as he could.
Sauron: There is no light that can defeat darkness!
Valar: Are we a joke to you?
darkness still exists. so they did not defeat it. And morgoth is still alive. he is just banished into the void.
@@HeavyMetalGamingHD So if Mike Tyson beats you to a pulp in a boxing match, you would say he did not defeat you because you are still alive somewhere in the hospital? Your definition of defeat is a lil off lol.
@@Paivren your logic is a bit off
@@HeavyMetalGamingHD You don't know the difference between "kill" and "defeat", you are unable to counter my illustrative example, and then you talk about logic as a desparate attempt to save face. Pathetic^^"
@@Paivren so you are coming with semantics and then you insult me. wow. What a nice guy you are.
*Caution! Your mana draining! Please find a save spot and heal your self!*
Gandalf: I think i still have more to shield my self..
Sauron: *Uses a skill*
Gandalf: This is why i never solo
Gandalf trying to solo the raid
This scene alone made The Hobbit worth seeing.
Sauron: There is no light, wizard.
Galadriel: MERHABALAR AQ
I believe Galadriel uses her ring of power.
This used to frighten the hell out of me when I saw this.
Was it the shadow in the fiery eye or just the fiery eye?
1:38 reminds me of the patronus from Harry Potter
nam dang Light vs darkness
Ha! IKR?!
The Writer of Harry Potter JK rowlings Was inspired by Jrr Tolkien's books, So We Can Say that Patronious was taken from Tolkien Books,
It's cool how sauron walks out of that darkness
He is the darkness, which I find really cool
Fun fact: that Darkness you see? It's technicly Sauron TRUE form.
This is Sauron when he is very weak. Now imagine Morgoth at full power (Melkor)
My Master is stronger than all Maiar
