    I have a '21 Chevrolet Silverado RST with the LM2. I tow a '21 Keystone Cougar 25RDS (29'11", 6150 dry and about 7k loaded, 8800 GVWR). I use an Equal-I-zer 4P hitch. All of my weights are well within spec. My truck tows it extremely well. I did add D rated tires before our last trip (KC to Galveston) and they vastly improved handling and performance.

    I wish I could post pics here. Just to illustrate the differences between different models of the same truck, this is what my '23 Sierra SLT with LZ0 and Max tow looks like:
    GVWR: 7300
    GCWR: 17800
    RGAWR: 4150
    Curb Weight: 5509
    Max Payload: 1791
    Conventional trailer: 11800, Max tongue: 1180
    Gooseneck: trailer 8100, Max tongue: 1215
    If I'd gone with 20" wheels conventional trailer goes up to 13000 lbs, not sure about gooseneck.

    Great video. People get too hung up on trailer weight when in reality the size and type of trailer you’re towing is far more important. This is true with any truck but it’s especially true with half tons. So good job in pointing this out.
    Your enclosed trailer would be a good match for the truck and it will do pretty good with it. But that same trailer in say a 24’ or especially a 28’ is really starting to push it with a half ton in my opinion.
    I think flat trailers or boats are ok even at close to the max weight rating for half tons. But an enclosed type trailer that’s getting close to 30’ long overall length is too much for any half ton, even if the weight is under the trucks rating.

    I'll describe what these "three digit codes" are that GM uses, such as LZO.
    They are called RPO codes, which is the acronym for Regular Production Option.
    GM has been using these for many, many years. A different code is assigned to every conceivable piece of equipment (option, variation of gear ratio, etc). They are standardized across nearly their entire line of vehicles, particularly "axle ratio".
    LZ0 (zero) is the RPO code for the new version of the 3.0L Duramax. Previous version was LM2.
    Another example for the purpose of my explanation of RPO Codes is the 6.6L Duramax. First gen 6.6L was LB7, then came the LLY, LBZ (the holy grail of the 6.6L), LMM, LML and currently we have the L5P. I have a 2009 LML Duramax.
    These codes used to be on a sticker in the glovebox. I haven't shopped new trucks in a long time, so I am not sure if that sticker still exists in the glove box.
    You can give the VIN to a dealer and they can print out a BUILD SHEET which will list every RPO code that a given truck is built with.

    A tip for furture videos. There are programs that will split the audio and video of your recordings. You should do that so when you go to edit you can use a continuous shot while using clipped audio. The video clipping throughout the video is kind of distracting.
    Good info though. If I go with GMC for my next truck Ill be getting this engine. The only negative of the truck Ive heard from a few videos is the seats are uncomfortable. What is your opinion of the seats for long drives?

    It will be interesting to see how it tows, but I think the diesel in all the the brands in the half ton models just have too many compromises with larger trailers that gas max tow packages can handle within their specs. Plus, Diesel prices are a lot higher than even premium gasoline, and I live in an oil production state! I just don't see how they make economic sense like they did years ago when diesel was cheaper than regular gas, and there was no DEF to worry about.

I drive from Alberta to Kansas once or twice a year and would never do the trip pulling my sxs because the truck would absolutely die in Montana and Wyoming. It’s sad really because the stickers say it can pull almost 9000 lbs, my truck pulling that kind of weight would probably break the truck pulling off the lot.

    Hey, thanks for posting this - I have a question :) - Do you happen to know if - that 880lb max tongue weight listed there (for a conventional trailer mounted to the factory hitch) - is that taking into account a properly setup weight distributing hitch, OR just a direct connection to the hitch? There is a MASSIVE difference (in my years of towing experience) between those 2 setups, so just wondering if GM denotes the difference, OR if they don't. I'm guessing they don't, as it doesn't appear to be annotated on that placard - unless you know about this? 880 lbs on a 7000lb trailer vs 880lb tongue on the same trailer using a properly setup WDH will transfer up to 30+% of that weight towards the front axle thus reducing that actual pin weight by a long shot

    • @TS-di5zw
      @TS-di5zw Před rokem +1

      That number should be the tongue weight total, including weight distribution. If I remember correctly, I think GM recommends weight distribution at 5k and above since like you said, it makes a big difference

    Why is gooseneck rating lower than bumper pull? I thought the point of the gooseneck/5th wheel connection was it spreads weight over the whole frame of the truck better

    • @shanebrown2963
      @shanebrown2963 Před rokem +1

      Ya my thoughts exactly. I think gm did it so people aren’t trying to tow a 13,000 lbs 5th wheel. Which would be way to much for it.

    • @brandedmcgowan9414
      @brandedmcgowan9414 Před rokem +1

      Because this is a half ton truck not recommended for that kind of weight, (no full floated axle, no two-three staged leaf spring, the chassis and frame, transmission and engine is not robust and sturdy and thick like on a heavy-duty model like a 3/4 , full ton duty.

    • @bws3152
      @bws3152 Před rokem +2

      According to what I've learned, they are lower because a gooseneck hitch places more weight on the vehicle. The GAWR and GVWR are the limiting factors on LD trucks. The reason HD trucks can tow so much heavier goosenecks is because they have much higher GA & GVWR.

    • @ArmyProperty
      @ArmyProperty Před rokem

      With a gooseneck or 5th wheel, 100% of the pin weight is going on the rear axle. When towing conventional (bumper pull), you can use a WDH to spread out the tongue weight and keep from crushing the rear springs. So you can support more tongue weight (and therefore a larger trailer).

  • @headrball
    @headrball Před rokem

    The conventional towing tongue weight of 880 is 10 percent of the max convention trailer recommendation (8800 Lb). !0 percent is a standard safe trailer tongue weight recommendation. The payload capacity is limited by the axles and brake components and gets reduced quickly by all of the weight in a vehicle like this with a ton of options.

My '21 Sierra was built in Mexico and has been flawless. I bet that if I parked it next to a US made Sierra, no one would know the difference by looking at its fit, finish, and the way it drives. Hell, I would almost argue that the ones in Mexico are possibly built better due to them valuing their jobs. I'm American and personally know a lot of lazy fellow friends and even family members that don't want to work and I sure as hell wouldn't want them building my truck, but that's a whole other story...
