    Germany could probably have gotten a german king on the norwegian throne. They did not really bother that much in our timeline because of the ongoing first moroccan crisis. But that would probably not have happened in this timeline. They would be able to spend more ressources and time on trying to convince the norwegians. Unintended consequences are never factored in, the choice you make includes the choices you don't make, leading to other issues.
      1. Germany invades Russia, the allies will step in if power balance breaks.
      2. Power shift will cause a greater war, economic trade will prevent war.
      Contained by other great powers:
      Spain = no further gains in Europe
      Ottomans = no further gains in Europe
      France = no further gains in Europe
      Russia = no further gains in Europe
      Pillars of power balance in Europe:
      Briton: Oceans
      Russia: Land
      Turks: Land/Sea
      France: Land/Sea
      Germany: Technology
      Problems with power:

      2. Corruption = inefficiency
      3. Opposition = resistance
      4. Rivals = challenger
      5. Utility = use it or lose it
      Central authority vs regional authorities:
      1. Chain of command, compliance with authority
      2. Forces of unity > force of division
      3. No crisis or systemic shocks
      4. No regional drift or divergence

      7. Self reinforcing identity

      Interesting those questions, specially the first one. I could only answer to the third one, and my answer is yes. Italy would have been stronger and still have had it's interest on the corn of Africa and Libya. Probably Italy would have also try to gain more territories that were under french control. The interest of Italy always was to make the Roman Empire come back with a new and modern face, so making the empire as much as big as it can it surely would have try to do that. The sentiment of making Italy the perfect and glory successors of Roman Empire, the father of Italy, is still present nowadays. Also, it was highly probabile that fascism wouldn't have had ever born and Italy would have had turned into a parliamentary monarchy, like UK

      Switzerland would have likely remained whole, as breaking off to join other countries wasn't popular back then, only perhaps in 1918 during a short time where Switzerland's existance was on Edge after WWI. Austria however is very likely. If the Austro-Hungarian empire was dissolved or reduced passively and no one could go against Germany, Austria and allies, it's likely Austria would've joined Germany. Other than modern Austria joining, the borders of German Austria (a post-WWI rump state, predecessor to interwar Austria) would've likely been included as well, and possibly the rest of Czeckia, as seeing ethnic maps, the population was slowly becoming German, which can be seen in our world between 1918 and 1938 with the growth ot Sudeten Germans. Other lands could be added but aren't as likely, except possibly Slovenia and Istria, to gain ports in the Adriatic sea, part of the Mediterranean.

      @@sandjaarx With Austria I would say it depends on their system of state. Even if the Austro-Hungarian Empire dissolved prior to WWI, as long as the Austrian parts (Austria and Bohemia/Czechia) remained monarchies under the house of Habsburg-Lorraine (which is likely), they would've never joined the German Empire willingly without war as that would've been the biggest humiliation for the Habsburgs. Not only would they have had to give up their title "Emperor of Austria" - as there can only be one Emperor in one country - the house of Habsburg-Lorraine which had been dominating the German speaking world for centuries before 1866 would've had to accept Prussia as their superior. This humiliation they would've never accepted. It is nore likely that the Austrian parts of Austria-Hungary would've remained an independent Empire of Austria in this scenario. Only the events of our timeline, which saw the abolition of the monarchy in Austria as a result of the defeat in WWI would've lead to these lands joining Germany, which, of course, also happened in our timeline with the Anschluss.

They could do what Qatar is doing in our timeline, making itself an indispensable hub for commercial sea (and eventually air) traffic, shipbuilding, etc. In our timeline they have first, second, and fourth busiest ports in Europe, but if optimized they would also be the rail hub. It’s it’s own language, you could claim just as easily that Limburgish is just a dialect of German really.

      @@karlmuller4764 It obviously is. Limburgish is a regional language that is closer to Standard Dutch than it is to standard German. It was also the first of the Dutch regional languages to develop a literary tradition. And ultimately the vast majority of Limburgish people have identified with a Dutch culture and entity and not a German one
      Also “the Rhineland” doesn’t speak Limburgish. It is a relatively small part of the border region in Germany. Currently the German parts of the language are almost dead and primarily spoken by a few old people. It is not like people in Düsseldorf actually still speak Limburgish (the same goes for Klevelandish, another “Dutch” regional language which is also not really spoken in Germany anymore).
      Ultimately this is an alt history video, and the Limburgish and Klevelandish regions could easily have been seen as Dutch as well. Especially because German is more of a merger identity than Dutch is. But Obviously no one who currently lives in that (former) language zone identifies as Dutch. Just as how no one in the Low Countries identifies as German.

    • @grandmanitou6563
      @grandmanitou6563 Před rokem +13

      @lucat8004 Před rokem

      Okay, let’s not forget that France was a united nation since decades. Thus German states were often a pawn for the powerful France. However, the origin of German nationalism is on the one hand an academic and intellectual pride of great philosophers like Kant or poets like Goethe etc. And on the far more important other hand the common enemy France, especially in the wars of liberation against Napoleon. France wanted to spread the world with it's liberal values such as "Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité" and hypocritically occupied many German Territories. So, German nationalism is originally but partially an act of liberation. The later Prussian Reich's aim was surely to weaken France and it's dominant position within Europe, but even the Nazis didn’t want to raze France completely out.

And if the Ottoman Empire remained a German ally in this alternative WWI, and did much better (which seems likely), they would also keep their holdings in The Middle East, and maybe even claim some lands from Russia. You could do a version of this type of thing, but with the Dutch Empire instead. So, I'd assume it starting from 1642 or something, where the Dutch beat off the Spanish from their short lived holdings in Chile and keep bits of Chile. Then, they'd have to keep Dutch Brazil (New Holland), an idea I'm rather fond of, and after the Napoleonic Wars keep South Africa and keep New Amsterdam after the British try to take it in 1673. The GWC does not fail and die, but instead manages things efficiently. I'd also assume that the Dutch would colonise all or the majority of New Holland (the second New Holland, or Australia) and expand their influence throughout the whole East Indies, up the Malay Peninsula and probably into India. It would be a very interesting video to watch. Thank you for reading.

When I first read about this I face palmed myself, thinking why the hell didn't the Germans go ahead with that after winning the war against France? Just like you said, my first thought was, possible two-front war against France in an alternate WWI. I like the notion of Benelux unifying and focusing on trade. They could do what Qatar is doing in our timeline, making itself an indispensable hub for commercial sea (and eventually air) traffic, shipbuilding, etc. In our timeline they have first, second, and fourth busiest ports in Europe, but if optimized they would also be the rail hub. With the Hague, they would eventually become effectively the capital of Europe, perhaps dominating it much as the Grand Duchy of Moscow came to dominate Russia and oversee a vast empire.
