The whole album "Wish You Were Here" is a tribute to their original singer/guitarist Syd Barrett. He was a childhood friend of Roger Waters, and was very loved by the band. They recorded their first album with him. He used hallucinogens recklessly and eventually lost his mind. Growing more frustrated by his decline they brought in David Gilmour on guitar to supplement that part of the music. One day they simply chose to not pick him up on the way to a show and that was it, Syd was out of the band.
Oddly enough many years later while recording this album an odd looking overweight and shaved-headed man wandered into the studio. They eventually realized it was Syd. They tried to connect with him, but there was nothing there anymore. A couple of them were left in tears over the state of him.
I think they were always haunted by him, and by the way they abandoned him in the end. Besides being the main focus of this album he also plays a huge role in the main character of their album The Wall.
I would recommend listening to this entire album if possible, and in as original a quality as possible. There are full album rips on youtube, where people have done their best to transfer the original records to youtube from their turntables, I would recommend one of those. And I would recommend having the lyrics available, as they are very meaningful on this album.

Check out "Shine On You Crazy Diamond 1-5" off this same album. The album is a tribute of sorts to their founding member Syd Barrett who left the band early on due to severe mental illness before they achieved international super stardom. However his ghost remained throughout Floyd's career and is referenced often in their music.
"We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl,
    year after year"

You should really do the whole album, in two parts. The songs flow together.

I think that the sound of acoustic guitar and piano playing together in a song is one of the most beautiful sounds ever.

Great song. Another good one off this particular album is Have a Cigar. It has a great guitar solo
Zay , if you want to hear Pink Floyd really rock out let me suggest the song One of these Days ( I'm going to cut you into little pieces) That one is from their greatest album Meddle.

Rick Wright played a lot of different keyboards in Pink Floyd, including piano, and an electronic keyboard synthesizer (EMI Synthi AK) for those "exotic" horn harmony sounds, in ("Wish You Were Here") this one. There are so many PF albums and songs, many flowing into each other, as an entire album. Some of my favorites are the Animals album ("Pigs" "Dogs" and "Sheep"), and of course, the Dark Side Of the Moon is a classic. "Time" "Money" "Us And Them" "The Great Gig In the Sky"..the Wall was a huge seller too. "Another Brick In the Wall" "Hey You" "Young Lust" "Comfortably Numb" "Run Like Hell"... too many others to list..I like "Summer '68" from Atom Heart Mother 1970, too. They recorded quite a bit of music!

I remember riding on a crowded bus once. Was very quiet. I Wish You Were Here came over the radio. Like six of us scattered throughout the bus began humming along with it. Everybody else giving the "side-eye."
    Was very tranquil.

Zay, I have some advice for you both if you don’t mind me offering.
I think that when you’re familiarizing yourself with bands like Floyd, Rush, and maybe Yes and Zeppelin, it is CENTRAL to your full grasp of the meaning and enjoyment of each song to follow along reading the lyrics as you listen to them… and in a way, you basically evolve into STUDYING the lyrics because you repeat that process over and over again until lines start to stick and you begin to realize (some, not all) of what they are implying. You’ll find you will SO much MORE enjoy each song as you hear it. And eventually, the ones that become your lifelong favorite’s - the ones you think you know every beat and pause to.. will CONTINUE to surprise and blow your mind as decades pass, and no matter how many do… you’ll find something new you never EVER realized about the meaning or the sound or SOMETHING that absolutely astonishes you! It is a gift that keeps on giving and I know this from personal 40+ yrs experience with these songs. EVERY SINGLE OTHER music fan friend of mine has shared the same exact sentiment. 👍GOOD LUCK on whatever journey you choose.

I don't know how or why this is my favorite Pink Floyd song. It is so simple, not nearly as complex musically as so many others. But the lyrics are among the best lyrics ever written. David's on this as well.

That was one track from a concept album. The album is about how being famous and wealthy is a trap. When he says "Wish you were here" he means he would gladly trade his life of fame and fortune with you, because being part of an entertainment "machine" that only wants to exploit your creativity to make more and more money, mostly for itself. Always fun to see you react to great music, Zay! Peace.

    Hey now,
You still need to work on your sound out-put there is too much electronic noise happening. It makes it hard to listen to especially since I turn these songs way up!!! 👌👌😁😁 Maybe it's the quality of your mic or as simple as your settings!!! I would suggest that you listen back to this video and turn it up and try changing your settings and test it out a bit, Thanks
also its fun watching you get your mind blown with all of these songs, I'm so lucky to have had them my whole life!!! Your lucky cause your young and will have them your whole life too!!! Peace and Rock n' Roll👌👌👍👍✌✌😁😁

Dude, I like your channel, but I wish to offer some constructive criticism here. You should really have the lyrics in front of you when you listen these songs. You made a slight reference to them, but for this song in particular they are just as important as the music. This is a song about the human condition, about how we have been fooled into giving up what matters most for things that are worthless:
"Did they get you to trade
    Your heroes for ghosts?
    Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
    Cold comfort for change?
    Did you exchange
A walk-on part in the war
For a lead role in a cage?"
    Check it out.
