I watched the movie 'The Upside'.
She sings this with sheer passion.
I did not know that she had ever sung this song, and when I heard it in that movie, I was looking it up immediately afterward. Was not disappointed to have found this masterpiece.

I just adore Aretha's take on this classic aria. She totally gave it an R&B feel without losing the original design of the song. Just stunning.
When I watched her sing this at the Grammys, I said "she is the greatest singer of all time".
I've never heard this before but I've seen other Renditions of it including Luciano pavarotti. I love how she just makes it her own. She doesn't sing it exactly like an opera singer would but she does it with as much precision and power and soul and whatever that special thing was she had. She just dominated this difficult piece!

@@MrWhiskeycricketCome on none of us were around 100 years ago but opera recreates the same (beautiful) experience through different people's voices again and again. Many opera fans notice and appreciate tiny differences from the standard in each singer. To the rest of us, we might hear some differences but might as well be listening to the original. Aretha gave us something new and beautiful when she covered this song
When you hear Classical singers do this, you expect them to have a certain level of delivery. But to hear this from a R&B songstress, just takes me to another level of emotion and respect. I mean, who would expect Pavarotti to be able to Rap successfully? Bravo Aretha!

Ms. Franklin actually stepped in for an ailing Pavarotti in 1998 at the Grammys and sang this in his key when he had to bow out at the last minute. He was well aware of how well she did. It is not an operatic performance at all...but she made it her own.
