The tea ceremony is a formal celebration and extremely ritualized. Everything is made by the one performing the ceremony, and Buntaro in the book was acknowledged as a zen master of the Cha No Yu/tea ceremony. And also in the book, Mariko recognized that he performed the ceremony with such absolute perfection it formed a moment of bliss for her. Even so, she refused him his offer.

There's a certain calmness to it. Beautiful.
Yeh that was cold blooded response from her. Justified, but still.

The cleverness of the story and the excellence of the production only gets better and better.

I can't knock the production in this. Felt like a HBO show throughout.

Omi's "Don't you dare!" face at Yabu is so great 😂
Also I really love the way Naga's death affected Omi. I always assumed he was just taking advantage of the kid's naivety, but this episode shows he truly considered him a friend and respected his loyalty- something Yabu just doesn't possess. Made me really rethink his motivations and little things he's done so far that I might have misread. This show is SO good on a rewatch. I'm glad you guys waited to watch it until it was over because having finished it and then starting over with you guys has given even more perspective.

😂 It was almost a look of a disappointed parent.
Do you think he spoke that way about him because in some small part he felt a little guilt for manipulating him as well?

Toranaga is a troll and I'm here for it.

Toranaga has now got many sticks of time to plan allsorts. While everyone else is hold up in Osaka Castle. Who are the prisoners here? It was a big gamble but Toranaga had to sacrifice his Bishop on the chessboard of life. To let everyone know he's a beaten man. Maybe Toranaga has sent Mariko to talk to Lady Ochiba. Which might give him some protection from Ishido and the Regents when he finally turns up in Osaka. Give's him more sticks of time. Cheers, Chris Perry

That's some insanely smart strategy. Shame he had to give up his son and Hiromatsu for his plan to work....of which I can't still work out completely as we know he doesn't want to be Shogun.

11:39 "Oh shit, that is savage". Mariko has been against their marriage from the beginning. Her father married her off to the Toda clan to save her. However, she said to Ochiba "The alliance with the Toda clan is worthless" (ep. 6). When Ochiba reminded her that her father (Akechi Jinsai) loves her very much, her response was "then he should have married me better". She has been against the marriage (and him) since day one. I am not saying she deserved to get abused. Think about it from Buntaro's side. He has shown compassion yet she throws everything back to his face. Over time I can see how he became bitter

That's one bit maybe I didn't fully understand. Even though he seemed compassionate, did she hold him being from the Toda clan personally ? It always felt like he mainly treated her badly and then had moments of compassion which she wasn't buying. Or have I read that wrong?

@@RamblersInc Because of Hiromatsu's death. Poor Fuji, she lost her husband, her son and now her grandpa.

Damn. I didn't even think about it being another loss for Fuji 😞
Toranaga better have something up his sleeve because it looked like he knew it was going to happen.

Toranaga insisted that his samurai practice the arts of peace as well as war, and Buntaro, for all his flaws, was an acknowledged master of the tea ceremony. When I was a kid, I'm sure we had all heard of it, if not being very familiar with the ritual itself. And one of my favorite Toranaga stories stems from an occasion on one of their boat trips when Blackthorne, in an excess of relief and exuberance, broke into a hornpipe as he sung a sailors' shanty. This amazed Toranaga and his ladies and they insisted on learning the dance themselves. At the very height of what seemed to be Toranaga's defeat and illness, as he sat alone on the battlements, he got up and danced the hornpipe all by himself. As he secretly celebrated the plan within a plan that we can't even guess at. And won't until the very end.

I hope we get that moment of laughter and joy at least in the final episode. Toranaga dancing? Now that's something
