We all know that Toranaga has many plans and even when things like the earthquake or with the unexpected death of his son. He'll find away to turn it to his advantage. Toranaga would also know what his brother was like from when they were kids. The lady Gyoko who got her stick of time. That conversation was of 2 equals, she could see through Toranaga's schemes. As she said " Would you really have left your borders undefended"? He could find many way's to slow the march to Osaka Castle. Cheers, Chris Perry.

I'm not putting anything past this guy. He's got plans upon plans.

The courtesan guild was the origin of the geisha, who was the most highly trained practitioner of the arts in Japan. For them, sex was secondary and always consensual. And Toranaga's strategy is always to wait and let other people do the work, make mistakes, exhaust themselves and play into his hands.

It’s almost like he knows that other people will definitely make mistakes.

@RamblersInc He combines the luck and skill at brinksmanship of John F. Kennedy with the astute character observations of Jane Marple. And as compelling as he is, the book layers on so many other levels to his character. As a fictional character, he should be up there with King Lear.

Fun fact: the future for the Willow World that Gin is describing to Toranaga is the beginnings of geishas

you said "he didn't get killed, he killed himself"... but that's not quite true. The uncle swept his leg out from under him.

You have no idea how much I’d like to believe that. It would make Nagakado less stupid and his uncle slightly smarter in that moment. But… I’ve gone back frame by frame and it looks like the kid genuinely slips. It’s a real banana peel moment 🤦‍♂️.
It’d be funny if it wasn’t tragic.
I wonder if he dies in the book and 80s show the same way.
