    Great video. I planned to change my impeller and was wondering how to disconnect the shift linkage and this video showed me exactly how to do it. One suggestion, use a little anti-seize on all bolts since you have two dissimilar metals, stainless bolts into aluminum housing. Will make getting the bolts out easier the next time, and lessen the chance of a bolt snapping off. Been there done that.

    Since I'm not too knowledgeable on boat motors, I had to have my impeller replaced on Mercury 9.9 4 stroke. Also , the mechanic had to clear out debris from the water pick-up tube and replace the thermostat. $ 550 later, it runs like a top. Had no idea that these things had to be changed on a regular basis. Thanks for the info.

    Do you have a part number for this?

    Great video. Just as a point of reference so as to know in terms of hours. You said you change it at the beginning of the season, so what is your guess-estimate of the number of hours you run in a season? I am asking just cause the impeller you took off was pretty beat up, so it must have run for a lot of hours. Thanks.

      So I was running it out of the water trying to trouble shoot some things. But that was the original impeller, and it’s a 2016 model.

    Also my local repar shop suggested I use a bucket to feed water, the earmuffs are not good

    My tell tale does the same, I have mine in a 30 gallon trash can, it starts pretty strong but then it slows to a slow stream, any idea?

    Great work, what should the adjustment be on the shift rod/linkage can't get into reverse after impeller was replaced (previous owner)

      @@pucho513 can’t remember. I think so. Just try to connect linkage rod in neural trap and play around with it. If that doesn’t work, connect it in forward and see what happens. Just play around connecting the link rod with each gear. You should get it eventually.

    I have a newbie question please. Is the water that pees out of the little hole on the side just to indicate that the cooling system is working, or is that actually the entire output of the cooling circuit? Also, does it flow even if the thermostat is closed because the engine is cold? I'm halfway through doing the job, waiting on parts, and I couldn't see anywhere else the water could escape (but I am new to outboard maintenance) thanks. Simon.

    • @MaineManBassing
      @MaineManBassing  Před měsícem

      If you look near the prop, there should be a little vent looking thing. The water propeller spins off the drive shaft, regardless of the gear it’s in or if it’s in neutral. As it spins, it circulates water from that vent up the engine and out the piss hole to cool the engine.
      I believe some outboards have a water pump: a totally different system. Usually the smaller outboards have a water impeller tho.
      As for the thermostat, I believe as the engine warms up, it opens to allow more water through to cool the engine. Those things can seize closed or open. You can put it in boiling water and see if it opens. I remember looking at mine and it had debris in it keeping it open, possible not allowing the engine to warm up properly.
      If you don’t have water pissing out the hole at all times, either it’s not working or it’s clogged. This happened to me after I was fishing in really shallow mucky water. I used a thin Allen wrench to unclog it.

      @@MaineManBassing Thank you very much for your answer sir. I'll try the allen wrench tip on my Merc 9.9. Good fishing. Simon.

    Don't you put grease on the main shaft going into the engine head? I remember dealer did it. Also some grease into the impeller box...

    • @eddiegordo3472
      @eddiegordo3472 Před 2 lety +1

      he should. Grease on the main shaft prevents long term tear damage to it

    The 9.9 Merc 4 cycles have an accelerator pump, and each twist of the throttle floods the engine with a shot of gasoline. Don't flood the engine, with or without the engine running.

      @MaineManBassing  Před rokem

      Yeah. I got it running again. I think the best thing would have been to just replace the carb. It ran a lot better after I replaced the carb gasket.

      I don’t know it. You can get the serial number from the engine. It’s under the cowling on the top. Then look online at parts catalog.
