      Intentionally leaving them is not excusable. But I have lost some while dispatching cripples or brushing out some landed ducks. Depending on the color of the shell helps a lot. I have field and stream shells and they’re dark green which is incredibly hard to spot in water on land, especially if you’ve been moving around and not stationary.

I first got a shotgun and wanted to go with a kid that went for years and he told me he only takes people that can shoot like what kind of crap is that. So I pretty much taught myself stuff since then I don’t ask people because they always want to act like things are secret

My dad keep a getting on me for not buying an automatic shotgun but at the time I bought it I just wanted to have one in my collection of deer and hog hunting rifles plus it was only $460. The more I get n2 waterfowl hunting I'll eventually get an automatic but for now I'll stay a die hard deer and hog hunter and part time duck hunter and use what I've got unless someone wants to buy me one😉

      @@gogitr8904 stick with the pump. I can shoot mine about as fast as my buddies and kil more birds cause its helpful to take an extra split second on a missed shot to get 2nd right. Semi auto tends to just shoot vs correcting mistake.
      Also here it gets freezing cold and we hunt water. Pump is easier to fix especially if you dont have a lighter or something to melt ice. Pump you can mortar to break loose to hunt. Know guys went home cause of frozen gun

    You nail it Josh. #2 I believe is probably the mistake that's committed most often. I believe watching videos and TV shows might contribute to new hunters believing 65yd shots are a good choice because 2D videos look like the shots are that far. We set a decoy a 35yds and try never to shoot at anything outside of that. It gives a good reference and creates good shooting habits. JMO

    Plz tell me 26 inch barrel is good for duck hunting with modified choke (kral semiauto)

    • @ronmoore5503
      @ronmoore5503 Před 3 lety

      The barrel length will not make a difference over 24 (actually it might be 21") inches, but 30 inches swings slower and has a longer sighting plane. Anything in between should work. The choke should work fine inside 40 yards, which is a good kill range. I use improved modified and full. Pattern the shot on a 40" circle at 40 yards with the shells you use. That is about 50 steps for me. You will see if enough bbs are in the circle.

      OnX is nice and worth the money imo. I've hunted public land my whole life and always find info on DNR sites. County GIS maps are a great way to determine boundaries and they are free and easy to use. Find a public spot and go walk it, talk to people, knock on doors and ask if they will show you where there property meets public. Most of them are happy to show you so you don't wonder into there setup in the dark. I've also went to the library and found articles and crude maps of public land.

    • @mattbugg4568
      @mattbugg4568 Před 4 lety

      Sky busting is something every new hunter does till they figure out that if they got decoys out in a u or v there going to have a duck or two land in them without the calls, without good camo, wearing a tan sports jacket and a red hat and elvis gold rim sunglasses. As long as they look at the ground instead of the birds. After they figure that out they pick there shots within 15-30 feet.

    • @ronmoore5503
      @ronmoore5503 Před 3 lety

      If you shoot and miss, they won't be back. If you wait, even if they leave, they might come back, and you didn't scare ducks off that you didn't see. I always wait for a shot inside 40 yards, usually closer. The sport is fooling the ducks into or near the decoys. That is the sport, whether you shoot or not.

    Go to football field count how many steps you have in 40 yards then make a game out guessing what 40 yards looks like both in field and off season with today to today stuff. When I was a kid my friends Dad did this with us and we would win a coke or candy bar. We became a very lethal pair of duck hunting junkies at 12 years old. And scouting birds should be on the list twice there is no such thing as too much time in the field.

  • @ronmoore5503
    @ronmoore5503 Před 3 lety

    I guessed before I watched. 1. Duck ID. Know what you are shooting. Pass on hen mallards, mergansers. 2. Shooting too soon. Let them get in closer so you kill them, or have closer 2nd and 3rd shots. 3. Moving around too much. Movement will flare the ducks. 4. Using no face mask or facepaint. White faces scare ducks. 5. Using a shiny gun. Flashing guns scare ducks. 6. Calling too much. Most will come in with no calling. 7. No motion in the decoys. Motion will help A LOT. Use a Higdon pulsator and mojo hen or gadwall. 8. Use good decoys that look real, like Greenhead Gear or flocked Avian X. 9. Have a unique spread, not just a dozen mallards. A couple pintails, gadwall, widgeon and mostly coots, if they are around, and a few mallards. 10. Dress warm and stay dry. Wait a minute. It isn't a duck hunt if you aren't cold and wet!

      Steven Byers Bandeds are definitely the best but they’re expensive and all waders are going to end up with a hole in them in a year or 2. I would probably go with a decent pair of cabelas brand or frogg toggs so when you replace them you aren’t spending $500

    • @ronmoore5503
      @ronmoore5503 Před 3 lety

      I like oversized Breathe Rite chest waders, at least, breatheable. I do not like neoprene, although they are more buoyant . You can layer up underneath, feet and legs. I wear a lightweight camo coverall over them. My last pair from Cabelas lasted 10 years. 120 then. About 220 now. My neoprenes are too hot, too restrictive, but good for my wife who freezes and hardly ever goes.

    My neighbor took me rabbit hunting last weekend at a giant public land and we pulled up to a spot and looked around sand saw nobody so we let out his dogs and we started down the hill and this was right next to the lake so there were duck around and I heard a quack but I thought it sounded more like a call and sure enough it was right as we were calling the dogs back the found a rabbit and started running the rabbit I feel so quilty so if you were duck hunting at a lake last Sunday and heard rabbit dogs barking I’m sorry

    Sometimes if public land is too packed other hunters might not mind if you joined them. It's better than two setups 50-75 yards apart. Then you'll just be spooking each other's ducks.
