- I apologize for all the blurriness, unfortunately, I didn't catch this until the video was in post
If you've ever had trouble getting an even reveal on the notoriously difficult inset doors for a cabinet, here's a great solution!
I stumbled on this trick will going through Andy Rae's "Furniture and Cabinet Construction". Pick up your own copy here:

Just a simple jig made from three separate pieces, you can make as many as you need in just a few minutes and hang multiple doors simultaneously!! Feel free to message/email me if you have any questions, or just leave a comment below!

Excellent video! I’ve been a full time carpenter for over 25yrs and couldn’t have presented it better. We’ll done
Thanks so much for the kind words! I really appreciate it and I hope my videos continue to be helpful!
Super video! Thanks for sharing. Short and straight to the point.
.
Thanks so much for the kind words! Glad you enjoyed the vid
Great video, thanks. The background music was quite distracting I must say however.
Glad you liked the video, and thanks for the input!
Distracting is one way of putting it.
Ideally you fit the doors to the faceframe before you attach it to the cabinet. Playing cards compress and dont make good spacer shims, blank printable plastic ID cards are ideal because they are exact thicknesses and you can buy a pack of 1000 fairly cheap (they also double as glue spreaders and packers). I make the door very slightly oversized, lay the face frame over the top of the door, get 3 cards and a engineers pencil and quickly trace the inside of the face frame onto the door. Each door takes me under 1 minute - and then I trim the doors using a track saw. Perfect results every time, no fiddling or tweaking required.
Never thought about the compression of the cards! Your method sounds incredibly accurate. I think if I did a lot more cabinet work I would absolutely lean more towards precision and repeatability...sometimes though you just have to work with what you have on hand haha. Thanks for the input though!
Playing cards compress?
You can put the wood back on. I have used not one but two layers of edge banding to build up inset doors. Worked for me. Playing cards are the bomb. I also make and install the shelve so the door don't fall in.
All great ideas! Thanks for the input, I always appreciate seeing how others solve these problems too
Great idea, will be helpfull... thanks!
Glad to help! Happy to answer any questions you may have along the way
How about 1/16” or 1/8” horseshoe tiling spacers. You could hang them on a nail or something and they wouldn’t fall in. Micro adjust with little strips of duct tape on the edge of the door or face frame.
That's not a bad idea! That's what I love about this kind of "hack" is that works with just about anything you have on hand. Thanks for the tip!
Great
Thanks so much!
Perfect. How does this work when gravity isn't on your side? I have the cabinets installed already.
It is a bit tougher when the cabinets are upright, but you can still use the playing cards to shim the doors and set their offsets. Just make sure you have some kind of temporary handle on the door (painters tape works well) so they don't get suck in the cabinet!
Is the side facing up the inside of the cabinet/backside of the door? If not, how do you setup your hardware once spacing done?
The side facing up is the outside/showside of the door. Once you have the spacing right, you can make the marks for the hardware, remove the doors, and then use a square to transfer all the marks around the edges of the doors and frames. Hope this helps!
How do you mark the doors for the hinges
A few different ways, but the easiest is just to hold the hinge right up to the door where you want it and lightly make a mark on either side of the hinge with a knife. Then you can extend those marks with a square to get your cut lines. Hope that helps!
What’s with the camera always focusing on something else but the object that you wanted to show?
Let's just chalk it up to technical difficulties lol
I really like your videos and I love your self-described geekness as your solutions to problems is awesome. The only thing I don't like about your videos is the background music - it's distracting and totally unnecessary as your description of what you're doing is really really informational. Great video and THANK YOU.
Thanks so much for your input! I'm always trying to improve the quality of my content, so I'll definitely keep that in mind for future videos👍

What ?? Why is there music with a vocalist singing while this Person is trying to talk ….??? Lol.
Hey, thanks for the comment! So, you're not the first one to bring this up...apparently that upset a number of people haha. You'll be happy to know that in the 4 years since this video was published I have learned from my mistakes. I hope you enjoy my newer (hopefully less distracting) content!
