My favorite recent story is how the cast of "Don't Look Up" kept calling her the GOAT. Finally, after some time had passed, they realize that she thought they were referring to as an "old goat". She didn't know it meant "Greatest Of All Time" until they explained it to her 😂. All along she took it in stride and never said a thing! So down-to-earth and such a sense of humor.

The reason why Meryl Streep became THE Meryl Streep, the queen we revere today after The Devil Wears Prada because that's when she became accessible to her audience & she was introduced to a new fanbase of Gen Z & millennial individuals.
This. Although, personally to me it's not even her best role.
Gen Z's were babies when the movie came out. It was all us millennials doing the work praise-wise until this new age of streaming turned this movie into an even larger cultural phenomenon

I'll just add as a native Polish speaker that she spoke Polish in Sophie's Choice with such native-like perfection that I thought she must have been overdubbed. Hats off to her, it's a really difficult language in terms of its phonology!
I saw an interview where she talked about working with her Polish teacher was most helpful in teaching her how to speak English with a Polish accent.
My mom had a friend who was Polish who said the same thing..

Most people don't even realize that this role was originally supposed to be played by an HUNGARIAN. Streep wanted the role so badly, that she actually MOVED IN with an Hungarian family for nearly six months before learning that the producers changed their minds at the last minute and wanted her to be POLISH. I can't even imagine her shock after all that hard work. But still, it didn't stop her:)
Born and raised in Poland here, and I do not agree. She does not sound like a native speaker, especially contrasted with the other actors. The parts where she was speaking Polish actually broke the immersion for me.
Meryl Streep is for movies what Celine Dion is for music. No sexiness, drama, or anything scandalous. Just being the best in what you do.
Meryl Streep is a lot more versatile in her acting than Celine Dion is in her music career though.

She is also known to be very mean to younger talented actresses( Kirsten Dunst, Toni Colette were impeached by streep in the oscar/weinstein academy).

Meryl streep is a hollywood fraud. In terms of acting the best living actress is Isabelle Huppert, then Toni Collette, and Kirsten Dunst: none of them was a dear friend of Weinstein, unlike meryl🤮.
People often gloss over Meryl's career in the 90's, including herself but honestly they are some of my favourite comedies. Death Becomes her might be my favourite Meryl Streep movie. She is hilarious in it and it goes without saying her acting is fantastic. Yes the effects are a bit outdated and the movie could be seen as shallow or vein but it's also satire and most importantly a lot of fun. I think critics got this movie wrong in the 90s and people are realising that which is why its become of a bit of a cult classic today.
Such a great movie! Goofy and satirical and well-acted and the effects were so cool when I was a kid. Plus Goldie Hawn and Bruce Willis? Excellent, fun, smart movie.
I adore that movie! I remember my mom watching it when I was little, I would peak between my fingers because it scared me on top of making me laugh 😂
One of her best performances ever. It's what made me fall in love with her in the first place.

Debbie Reynolds did a spot-on impression of Ms. Streep's very famous acting method. Only Ms. Reynolds could get away with that impression.

On her journey to being a actress that had looks to an actress that actually had talent I think she was actually given more recognition when she was in AHS than the 70's or 80's.
She was absolutely brilliant in AHS. Every season and every character she played.

Tbh, AHS made me love JLange. She was breathtakingly beautiful back then that you get distracted by her beauty. Though she made fine performances (Frances, The Postman Always Rings Twice, Tootsie, and Blue Skies), I would say that her diverse roles in AHS was the turning point of her career. It made her THE JESSICA LANGE that younger audiences, such as myself, became a fan of hers.
And Blue Sky is an amazing film, that is criminally unseen.

Man you're soo lucky, I guess you realize. UT was an Oscar winning performance back then already and so obvious how she plays for the passion of it rather than for the awards. And she did Kramer vs Kramer at the same time, telling her worried directors who thought she can't do more things at once that she is "just a little bit at the beginning and little bit at the end " 😂 at the end, she nailed it both!

What I really like and admire about her is that when I see her on film she is not 'the same' every time. She has so much versatility as an actress that you literally SEE the character she plays and not Meryl. Very few actresses can do that. Most of the times I see e.g. Julia Roberts playing Julia Roberts etc.

I think that describes Meryl’s career perfectly. Not being typecast means more opportunities to pick more challenging roles that test her acting skills. Probably the reason for her longevity in Hollywood. But the downside was, not being marketable enough to be a lead for big studio budget pictures. Which means not getting the big paychecks in comparison to Julia Roberts, Angelina Jolie, and Sandra Bullock. But it worked out in the end since now Meryl can get parts in big movies based on her name recognition and get fatter paychecks now.

For a good fake Aussie accent, I recommend Kate Winslet in The Dressmaker. It’s also an amazing film.
But Meryl is good at every other accent- just not this one.
@@katherinemorelle7115 The accent wasn't supposed to be exactly Australian I think. The character Lindy Chamberlain spent time in New Zealand, and traces of that did carry over to the portrayal.

Eric Plunder the only Aussie woman I’ve ever heard who sounded even slightly like Lindy is Pauline Hanson- and she’s a caricature to begin with. I think Meryl sounded about as accurate as Steve Irwin’s put on accent.
@@katherinemorelle7115 Pauline's accent is very real. Irwin's accent was real, also. His enthusiasm and energy were over the top and part of his act, but the underlying accented authentic.
I think it would be really interesting to delve more into women of color. Actresses like Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Angela Basset, etc would make for compelling video essay topics.
Because not once in the video essay were these women mentioned but they are also skilled, older women within the entertainment industry.

However, I do think Natalie Portman's performance in Black Swan was quite good.... at least in the "suffering for your art" sorta way that finally got DiCaprio an Oscar. But Toni Collette's snub was equally predictable and inexplicable.
Black Swan was not straight-up horror. It was nominated in Best Picture. Had a relatively well-known director behind it. Also, Collette was co-lead in Hereditary, a very divisive movie that the Academy would have never warmed up to. It's the same thing as with Aronofsky's Mother, honestly.
I expect the same to happen with Lupita Nyong'o in Us. I so hope it won't though. That movie wouldn't have worked without her.
Black Swan was by a popular director, was wildly praised by critics, and made a lot of money. Hereditary was by a first-time director and polarized audiences (got a D+ Cinemascore).
Black Swan is also "horror with a message" in the same way that Get Out was and Us is. I don't think Lupita should have trouble sneaking in if competition isn't very strong.

One more things about Meryl Streep - she "plays well with others" (in kindergarten terms). Other actors, the crews, studio front offices like and love her and want to work with her. As someone who worked in "the biz" for 30 years, I can say that this is very, very important.

Devil wears prada most definitely made her popular with millennials. She wouldn’t be as well known today as she is without it. There are so many great actresses from decades past that were household names that the newer generations don’t even recognize their names. Considering it’s very light hearted compared to a lot of her other films, I’m curious to know how she feels about that being one of, if not her most iconic role.
Her performance in Kramer vs Kramer is one of (if not THE) best performances I've ever seen. It feels so real, it doesn't feel like acting at all.
When you said Toni Collette, I freaked out because I'm a super duper big fan of her, such an underrated actress (Should've been nominated for Muriel's Wedding or Hereditary)

She was haunting in The Dead Girl. Her scenes with Piper Laurie were brutal. Its also has the eerie distinction of being one of Brittany Murphy's last performances(She is the Dead Girl).
Yes Hereditary for sure! I hate that horror is normally snupped because her performance in that film was amazing. Her performance captivated me from start to finish.
I Guess it's versatility. You never feel you've wasted time watching a movie with Meryl in it. You also never feel you have to put away Meryl's past to enjoy her presence.

I think one thing you kind of miss especially when talking about her peers is that Glenn Close has been the one always living in Meryl's shadow. Glenn has also shown her versatility and been lauded over the decades but still seems to be the also ran. Glenn should have won an Oscar by now.
I love Meryl-- there's no one else I'd rather see play Karen Silkwood or Susan Traherne, for just two of many examples. But the same is true for many actresses in their best roles. Glenn Close is unforgettable as the incredibly strong, heroic Jenny Fields in The World According to Garp. When Glenn did come more into her own as a star in the late 1980's, she threw shade about Meryl in an interview: "Meryl Streep has never made me cry..." She later stole House of the Spirits from Meryl (and Diane Keaton would steal Marvin's Room from Meryl)-- but Meryl also is a very generous actress-- reportedly to both of those actresses. She did express envy when Jessica Lange got the role of Patsy Cline in Sweet Dreams-- until she saw it, she said, and then she found Lange "sublime." In the 1980's, actresses were frequently asked about Meryl in interviews-- I remember Sigourney Weaver talking about having been at Yale Drama School when Meryl was there, and Meryl always getting the best parts.

i definitely agree that avoiding typecasting has definitely been one of the strongest factors keeping her career going other than her amazing talent
and you complete HIT THE NAIL about the sex symbol part when you think of other talented actresses of her time like Michelle Pfeiffer whose career completely sunk entering the 2000s when she was no longer " youthful"
But she's having a resurgence now it seems.
I think Michelle Pfeiffer took a break from her career to raise her children, which I selfishly think is a damn shame because her beauty and talent could have had serious range and longevity.
@@Cat-tastrophee I think Pfeiffer's career was already far off a Meryl Streep like trajectory by the time she took the break and that's mostly down to role choices and bad luck. She repeatedly found herself in films that either simply bombed at the BO in spite of being good or were just not great films and could not be rescued by her performance. She admits that she doesn't have a great sense of what role would work. Upon reading reviews of Love Field written at the time of its release, I found one where she was in fact compared to Streep. And also, she WAS very beautiful and the one problem with that is a face like Pfeiffer's cannot submerge or disappear no matter what. The great actors and actresses who are known for being able to disappear into their role are generally not known for their great looks - Daniel Day Lewis, Gary Oldman, Meryl Streep, Emma Thompson. Even Paul Giamatti.
@@MadanRajaRock I think Michelle did get typecast a little. Most of her roles are some variation of a character that's guarded and wary, with anger bubbling just below the surface for good reason. Like an updated version of Grace Kelly or the "icy volcano" Hitchcock blonde. (Nicole Kidman does a lot of those kinds of parts as well.)
@@appletree6898 I wouldn't call that typecasting but just innate character traits of hers that are powerful to watch on a screen and which directors therefore try to prise out in various roles of hers. When the characters are as diverse as the heiress in Wolf, the wife in What Lies Beneath or Catwoman, it is hard to call it typecasting because she has adapted well to the mileu of each role.
It was weird for me to start to love a woman at middle age (Meryl Streep in Devil) in 2006. But after 13 years, I still love her and even more. She's elegant, strong and ambitious. She is the one who made me believe in acting and "multi faces" or "glass masks".
Once you get there, there's no way out 😃🤭 I'm 20 man, I think I'll have the Meryl-thing till the rest of my life (don't take me literally :)

I still remember very clearly how many people shouted for Ronan when they were announcing the nominees

I still think her best performance is in "Lady Bird", but her competition then are strong.

I think Toni Collette was overlooked in the Sixth Sense also. Looking back over that movie, her performance was really fantastic
Toni Collette’s performance in Hereditary was brilliant! It’s truly sad that the Academy tends to ignore great performances in horror films - Florence Pugh in Midsommar was so devastatingly wonderful, but I doubt she’ll even get a nomination.

Here’s an interesting statistic...since her first Oscar Nomination, in 1977, the LONGEST period she’s gone without being nominated for an Oscar is FIVE YEARS (between 1990’s Postcards From the Edge and 1995’s Bridges Of Madison County)...She is simply the most consistently Excellent actress in film history!
She's close to matching or possibly exceeding this "record".

As someone who loves Meryl, but is only old enough to be aware of the brand of MERYL, this was incredibly informative. I think she’s truly incredible, but this shows me WHY I think that. Such a great video essay. Thank you.
I feel like there is not enough emphasis on how funny she is. Even though She Devil is horrible, she manages to be be hilarious in it. She's great in Death Becomes her and Postcards. I quote her comedic roles constantly.

Tbh, Amy Adams is like the super underrated version of the self-established underrated Meryl Streep.
If you really want to realize how good Meryl is, watch her very small role in Jane Fonda's "Julia." She's in one scene, her first film, I believe, and she completely owns it. I also think the beginning of Kramer vs. Kramer really shows her brilliance, because she sets up the pain the character is feeling in one brief scene, but seeing that allows us to sympathize with her an hour later when she re-emerges in the film.

I think there are two categories when it come to female. It’s either they’re the ingénue or the Hollywood starlet that gets the big $ for movie roles (Elizabeth Taylor and Audrey Hepburn in the 1950’s and Julia Roberts, Sandra Bullock, and Angelina Jolie in the 90’s and 00’s) and there are the prestige actresses that have higher longevity but low name recognition (Glenn Close, and Jessica Lange). Meryl Streep has a house in Aspen where she spends a few months of the year. According to the locals she only answers to the name of Mrs Green . My friend who is Australian and stays at a ski lodge not far away from Meryls home. One morning as he walked past he saw her on the balcony drinking a coffee , he said loudly " good morning Mrs Green " & she looked at him and smiled and replied " good morning kind Sir ".

What I find interesting about Julianne Moore is how many of her movies are so fucking awful. Like, why is she giving wonderful performances in such schlock? Maybe it's her age, but I think she's been in crap since she was young. I think she's comparable to Meryl in terms of versatility, but because she's more conventionally attractive (imo), that might be why she's overlooked? And also she's in a lot of bad films.
Am I the only one who can't stand Julianne Moore? There's something off that I can't pin point but she's not likable, talented maybe likable, no?
For example: she was on the Graham Norton Show (a British talk show), she was telling the story about how she became an English citizen because her mom was, anyway, she said that she was at the British Consulate in NYC and as soon as she because a citizen she was invited to a gala with William and Kate (who were visiting NYC at that time) well, the host was a bit jealous and the audience was like, what?? He said something like, "well, you're a British citizen for 5 mins and you get invited to meet William and Kate, and what about the rest of us?" She just laughed, but see? I don't envy her that she got to meet them but the way she talks is off putting. I don't know, maybe it's me.

So many of her films, I've neither seen nor knew. This makes me want a Streep marathon asap.
I always loved her comedy acting. Her nuances and melodious voice are perfect. I didn’t know until recently, “She Devil” (a box office bomb) was her first attempt at film comedy. Watch it now and it’s hilarious because of Streep even though it was supposed to be Roseanne’s movie. It’s the original “First Wives Club” and without it we wouldn’t have “Death Becomes Her” (a cult classic). Robert Zemeckis also enjoyed her performance in “She Devil”.
I didn't even realize how much I loved the range of MERYL until my friend and I were watching some of my "must watch movies", and they included Postcards from the Edge and Death Becomes Her, along with the obvious dramas.
PFTE is great. I miss Carrie Fisher.
If you have never seen "One True Thing", I recommend it. It's one of my favorite movies, but no one has ever heard of it. Watch it - Meryl will break your heart.

i've seen the movie. i bawled my eyes out. i watched because meryl streep and william hurt were in it and i love them both as artists. but, wow, rene zellweger, was totally the star in it. she was the surprise in that movie. what a surprise rene was that was her movie and she dominated the movie over mereyl and william hurt. utterly shocking.
No one ever mentions The River Wild when talking bout Meryl, shame, one of her best roles. She plays a bad ass. Anyway, awesome analysis of a legend.

Meryl is Meryl because she separates her personal life from her career and considers acting as an art and a job that should be done well. Not in a moment she has been part of a scandal or something else. That shows how much of a wonderful woman she is.
I think the reason she stands out is because she lends herself to a variety of people for each project she lends herself to.
She is legitimately the best female actress of all time. Her range is unmatched.

Her performance as Mary Louise in Big Little Lies was amazing. The way she handled and portrayed the character was just so powerful and empowering. Her portraying made the character hateful yet at the same time sympathetic for her. She’s amazing.
I like Meryl Streep for being an artist and human of intelligence and integrity. She lives a life where achieving her craft and her work is behind and integrated with most of her lifestyle choices. It's always about the roles she did, rarely about herself. Until probably recently she as a figure is becoming even more inspiring for women in the industry than her roles.

I've always loved Meryl's comical roles like Death Becomes Her, and She-Devil, which is actually the first time she had ever done comedy and was amazing in her role as Mary Fisher, a romance novelist who gets involved with a married man, whose wife is played by Roseanne.
Postcards From The Edge was another great one where Meryl is basically playing a version of Carrie Fisher, as the movie is based off of her book of the same name and she also wrote the screenplay. Shirley MacLaine is also brilliant as Meryl's on screen mother, a version of Fisher's real life mother, Debbie Reynolds
I think my favorite feature of Meryl's is her eyes! They're beautiful almost hypnotic in a way, and I love the way that she basically commands the screen when she's in a scene! I've always felt like I couldn't take my eyes off her when she's on screen. The one that cemented this for me was Silkwood. I was either 8 or 9 when I first saw that movie with my mom, but I just remember being completely unable to take my eyes off of Meryl in every scene she was in, and then the fact that Cher and Kurt Russell were her costars and they both commanded the screen as well! I still say that Silkwood is definitely one of the 21 nominations that Meryl should have won!

part of what makes meryl so effortlessly refined, is her observation of others. characters she plays often based upon people's non verbals and verbals obseved at various points in her life as points of reference- ticks, quirks, accents, movements. if they aren't watched and memorised, then she seeks out footage of the character or people with similar characteristics, observes, and commits it all to her own manner.
now, what is even more interesting perhaps, is you have different kinds of actors.. character actors, method actors, stage/broadway actors, shakespearian actors.. most actors are one of those, many struggle with further study and perfection of their craft to adhere to a secondary approach in acting, but meryl is all of them! she adheres to every style- or more accurately, doesn't adhere to any one style. it allows her freedom and fluidity to employ any performative approach at will.
This has easily become one of my favorite channels on CZcams not only for educating me on actresses and Hollywood, but for making me curious and interested to learn more. I helped win an Oscars-themed trivia game a few weeks ago, because one of the categories of the night was best actress winners before 1960 and when a movie theater near me was showing Double Indemnity I went to see it (and loved it) because of how many times you mention Barbara Stanwyck in your videos. Thank you for these fun history lessons and insights to women in Hollywood. Keep up the great work and I can't wait for your next video!

I saw Meryl Streep onstage at Lincoln Center, off-Broadway, in a Shakespeare play, in a small comic role. I did not know who she was (nobody did). I could not take my eyes off her. And that's onstage, and that's magical.

Meryl loves her parents, husband and children. I believe that grounds her and she actually DOES have the talent, so with those two qualities, she can’t really lose. PLUS, Meryl is humble, seems to have a kind heart, and that great word she uses frequently: “empathy” . She IS the gold standard, not only of actors, but of women in general.
I first became aware of Meryl Streep from the TV miniseries "Holocaust" in 1978. Although somewhat controversial, this miniseries won Streep an Emmy and really brought her into wide view for the first time. It deserved at least some passing reference in this otherwise fine retrospective of her career.
The feminist ideas that Meryl's roles have portrayed aren't revolutionary but she has been integral in introducing them to a wider audience. A lot of men and women who would otherwise not be open to those ideas, are willing to tolerate or even accept them when it's her. Meryl brings an aura of respect, of being mainstream.
Idk I thought "August: Osage County" was a gutsy move on Streep's part.

Meryl Streep has this unique combination of sheer ability, and undisturbing presence. Just like her face can be pretty, but is never the center of attention, she is always very good, but never polarising. Many actresses have her range and abilities (maybe more?), but they usually convey a stronger character. Which means some people are going to dislike them, even though they might be peers to Meryl.
Which brings me to the idea that Amy Adams might be the next Meryl. Even though she is for now unsuccessful with her nominations, she is very incredibly talented, while never bothering. She also is quietly progressive, while never being disturbing (see Arrival).
