Fell in love with Mazda after buying a used 1996 Mazda 323 compact with 40,000 on it from a "reputable" used car dealership. I didn't know at the time, but apparently it was salvaged, & the front axel had been welded back together. (A mechanic finally told me this only after multiple alignments due to problems with the right front tire always wearing unevenly).
I had it about 8 years, & at 250,000 miles, it was starting to use a little oil. I always changed the oil about every 3000 miles, because I didn't know any better. The only other annoyance was the water pump went out once. I became scared of it because I traveled 100 miles+ 5 days a week. I had someone haul it away for 50 bucks, & bought another used (unsalvaged) Mazda 3 & treated it the same with the same luck, only the headlights kept going out on it. I forgot what early 2000s model it was, but my mechanic said that was the quirk for that particular year, & even offered to buy it from me for his kid. That made me feel so good that I decided to hang onto it. I traded it in at 90,000 miles because a kid smashed it up while parked. Bought & have a used 2014 Mazda 3Touring model, & at 63, 000 miles, I'm beginning to suspect the transmission may be beginning to act up, but it's been solid otherwise. (May need some Lucas slippage stuff per Scotty)
Really hope someone else more knowledgeable got the 1996, & I've wondered about how many miles it could have gone.
The only thing I dislike about them is how low they sit...makes an old woman work to get in & out of it, & I'm always scraping the ground.
Scotty! I'm looking for a Toyota Dolphin RV. There's a video where you said there was a certain year to avoid due to the engine using oil, & I CAN'T FIND IT AGAIN!!! Can you please tell me that particular year to avoid. I think you said '81 (???)

My first car was an '84 RX-7 in 1998, which I purchased from a friend for $300 and had electrical issues, but I bought it before I had my license [mom wouldn't sign off on me driving]. I was so proud when I got it up and running and I taught myself to drive [manual at that!] in the midnight hours when my mom was asleep. I don't think I've ever had so much fun or so much pride with/in one of my possessions. The pop-up headlamps were pure magic to me, the car drove like a bat outta hell, and I woulda driven it into the ground if I didn't fry the electrical system for good w/ a short from too much self-installed stereo equipment- I melted the battery terminals + clamps! Shortly after I met my 1st girlfriend, who drove an '87 RX-7!

You get so much value for your dollar. The vehicle is loaded with features, is way more fun to drive (in the 2.5 Turbo) than its direct competitors, and IMO looks better both inside and out. I've owned BMWs, Audis, VW's, Toyotas, etc, etc and this is by far my favorite. Before I pulled the trigger on the Mazda I test drove the Honda CRV, the Subaru Outback (and I own another Subaru Forester), and a VW Atlas and Tiguan and again it was our clear favorite. So much fun to drive and looks great doing it! As long as the quality holds up I can see myself becoming a pretty loyal Mazda customer.

We were along an airport, so there was a long straight-away with not cross streets or lights. I missed my first shift so he pulled half a car length ahead. After that I stayed even with him. The Cosmo along with the Honda 750 4 cylinder were the hits of the show. After returning to the US both my father and I bought Mazda rotary cars, he bought a 1972 RX-2 coupe (and later an RX-3 wagon) and I bought a 1974 RX-4 wagon. Fabulous, but short lived engines, the metallurgy was just not there to keep the apex seals alive.

Best car I've owned thus far and it's even MORE fun to drive than the Mazda Miata. And while most of my friends and family are complaining about the cost of gas ($4/gallon) I say: TOO BAD SO SAD LOL. I bought a new Mazda GLC in 1981. I believe that the GLC was renamed the 323 later, not originally. By the way, it was a great little car!

Loving my 2019 CX-5 GT Reserve (AWD turbo). Beautifully styled, quick, good handling and great steering feel plus great quality.

Bought a new 5 speed Mazda3 in 2008 and have kept it to this day. 180,000 miles later and the only thing to mechanically fail so far is the wind sheild washer fluid pump. Motor and clutch still going strong. Mazda was known as the poor man's BMW because of the way they drove. From a reliability stand point I'd say they are much better. I can't kill this little car.

This was an inspiring story of entrepreneurship and history. I enjoyed it and fell inspired that a small company can still excel, even in today’s world. Thanks for sharing.

I can attest to this. Our 10-year old Mazda-3 still going strong and has no rust, despite being in slush and salty Canada, It starts in the cold and fun to drive, even tho previous owner was abusing her. Thanks Scotty
