- Wearing sexy, bare midriff outfits, Cher duets with Gregg Allman on "Don't Mess Up A Good Thing" followed by "Midnight Rider" (3:44) on Cher Season One. The May 11, 1975 show was at the beginning of their friendship which led to a short-lived marriage. Cher TV Series variety show premiered on February 16 1975 from Television City in Hollywood, CA.
Originally recorded by The Allman Brothers Band, Midnight Rider became a Billboard Top 20 single for Gregg Allman. Don't Mess Up A Good Thing was a 1965 Fontella Bass and Bobby McClure single, then later covered by Gregg Allman. Both songs are from Gregg Allman's 1973 solo album Laid Back.
Gregg Allman's newest album is Southern Blood, released in January 2017. Gregg is mourning the death of Butch Trucks. The Allman Brothers Band drummer recently committed suicide by gunfire on January 24, 2017.

WTF - The great Greg Allaman singing Midnight Rider with Cher trying to dance in the background? The camera never should have been taken off Greg. He was perfect!

I wish people would recognize Greg as an individual, talented on his own right ,without Duane, and without a band. Something you may not have noticed, the man has a whole lot of soul. See him for who he is and stop judging. And Cher does have a great voice! This was a variety show not a rock concert.

We sure don't have "variety shows" any more. Gregg looks and sounds good. Cher was her 70s outrageous self and they work well together. Cher put a little effort into creating this show. I like it.

Going through the tributes today...don't get this chapter in his life at all. Apparently he woke up and went back to his roots. RIP Greg, a great man who truly embodied Americana.
Great talent! I spent a day with him. He's not a "great man". He's an extremely talented man but just an imperfect man. On the day I spent with Gregg Allman, I was instructed to call his conservator if he wanted to buy something, "up to or over $200.00," for approval. Great, interesting but just a flawed human, different than but very much like others.

I love Greg Allman with Cher, great music, I never thought I would hear him sing When a Man loves a Woman, and he didn't shake my confidence in him as a GREAT Musician. BUT SING PERCY SLEDGE song, they made one album, I wish I had it.
I have never seen CHER do so much great dancing in the 2nd half of the footage from her show. The outfit would fit into today's contemporary fashion. I could see Lady Ga, Ga or even Katy Perry wearing this.

Hmm... I've always viewed Gregg Allman as the quintessential badass - the very epitome of badassery - the ultimate in no-BS badassitude. But after seeing this I am forced to revise that view.

RIP Gregg Allman one of the best ever. I saw this on Get TV Monday, this solo version to me was the best of this song. This video from the show is cool Cher's dance was different but well rehearsed and she did a good job at it.

This is great. I had no idea an interpretative dance version of Midnight Rider was possible. The Cher kung-foo dance moves makes it over the top. Glad Gregg got a little bit of that back then, she was top shelf ass in the 70's...next to Dinah Shore.

OK, most early ABB fans feel like Gregg went off the deep-end with Cher. But, hey she is beautiful (disregard the Bozo the Clown hair here please). Cher could definitely sing well too. Some musicians shouldn't collaborate however. That said if I just listen to this and not think too much it is a fine rendition of the song. As for Midnight Rider I had a distinct dislike of it when WJLN in Birmingham started playing it a lot. I was in high school so I guess my musical tastes were just starting to mature beyond "let's rock". A good friend of mine with mutual interests in rock and audio gear bought the solo album though so I began to listen to how Gregg's solo version re-invented the song into almost a different tune. The dobro guitar first got me and soon I realized it was actually a masterpiece of sorts. I broke down my immaturity and conceded that the arrangement was far more atmospheric and southern gothic. That's th version here and it still stands, the equal of the original if not the definitive version for everyone.

Cher warned Gregg of what he was to face if their relationship were to advance. He thought he could handle it. He soon realized he couldn't. Match that with the fact she could no longer deal with his drug use-the marriage ended quickly.
What in the world are you talking about? They partied together in the beginning and they got sober together. Gregg Allman kept relapsing. Cherilyn Sarkisian wasn't as talented and couldn't afford the diversions he was able to redeem. He couldn't, either but she was more pragmatic. He had to go, period. You can't blame her because she had her own kid with Sonny and one with Gregg. Drug addiction and alcoholism are disease, especially for a brokenhearted man or woman. Cherilyn Sarkisian made the best choices for her career and her children. The breakup probably hurt her daughter as much because she was very close to Gregg.
