The NIH did a study a few years ago. The results were that glucosamine was of some help in moderate to severe arthritis, but not helpful in mild arthritis. They found chondroitin to be ineffective because it simply did not get to where it needed to go.

Good to see this. Thank you. I have been taking glucosamine alone for years, and recently a smaller dose (since my symptoms seem.to have abated in fact gone, I think) but with MSM and minerals. It has worked very well for my knee pain, and also for other people to whom I have suggested it. Somehow it seems doctors don't recommend it, don't prescribe it and tend to brush away any reported benefits as anecdotal and placebo effects, so it's good to see the balanced and open minded approach of this video.

@@user-vn9js9yn1j Hello. I'm 5 feet 7 inches and about 58 to 60 kgs. I used to take I think it was 500mg glucosamine sulphate 'Lubrijoint' made by Wallace industries, Goa, India, twice a day. Am also vegan since many years, 2000 and aim for whole plant food diet, no sugar, almost no salt etc. Then after a few years that brand came out with a Plus formulation, 750 mg glucosamine sulphate plus minerals and MSM so then I started taking that once a day, since my symptoms were much decreased by then. Now since a couple of years I've stopped it, not taking any glucosamine. I also used to take algae derived vegan DHA for several years which too now I've stopped, trying instead to be regular with one or two heaped teaspoons daily of ground flaxseed.

I think almost by second day thought maybe felt a difference but today my 9th day was my best day from suffering osteoarthritis in months . For several years , I've had it come and go for months or at least weeks at a time . This last time , had it since Dec and almost a mooonth ago jst got much worse . I thought maybe this time won't go away after all , osteoarthritis gets progressively worse . Used Diclofenac sodium gel 1% and arthritis acetaminophen 650 MG and brace was so so not great . Now tink I can get back to normal . Woww just fantastic . An dused the hydrochloride form not sulfate which some say don't work but it does for me . I've heard of amny different supplements for many many things and was skeptical but tried this because a friend who I trust was a very long time sufferer of four different types of arthgritius and recommended these supplements

I gotta say, after fairly dramatic improvement in my dog I started taking it in 2008. After several months of a daily dosage I noticed a very significant improvement in outcome while on hiking adventures. Previous to taking it I was limited to around 5 miles per day, followed by Ibuprofen as an anti inflammatory so I could make the return hike the following day. I can now go 10-15 miles without significant joint pain and this has allowed me to maintain high activity levels at age 67. For $10/month I am relieved of joint pain and rarely need to follow up with Ibuprofen. Actual response to G&C or a placebo effect? I don't really care. Quality of life is greatly improved with G&C supplements.

Does a placebo effect mean, take this medicine and see if your brain "thinks" you're better but there has really been no difference at all to your joint health (for example)? Or do you believe it may simply benefit some (up to 50%) of patients who take it, but simply does not work for others?

I started noticing joint pains when I stood up, so to prevent further issues, I bought a bottle of Glucosamine Chondroitin 500/400 mg, 300 easy swallow capsules, premium formula from Costco, a Webber brand. Instead of 3 a day I took only 1 a day since this was a prevention, not a cure. After 1 month, that nuisance pain in my leg joints is gone. I thought it might take longer but maybe if I had waited until the pain was unmanageable, the results might have been different.

A doctor who is not pro or con, fantastic. The issue with so many supplements is how slowly they work. I had to take glucosamine, chondroitin, msn for three months before there was pain reduction, that is a long time. I have read many of the studies and they don't have the subjects take the supplement long enough. Also, the studies done in the US are all over the place, the studies done in Europe find more positive results, what is that all about? Also, the brand you take matters.

  • @robertdeboer2053

I'm trying making my own chondroitin from beef bone joint cartilage, boiling it, then taking it like bone broth.
But looking at the joint cartilage itself I would say cartilage repairs itself from cells deep within the layer of cartilage and hence will take a long time to replace itself. If the arthritis seems better after a short time, I would tend to think dietary chondroitin would be affecting inflammation around the joint.
I must try and understand how a layer of cartilage repairs itself.
