Nice interview. I love his work. Have all his books, not just stories and novels but two biographies (both old and new, collection of letters, and journal too. Goodbye my brother, the swimmer, the country husband, five forty eight, Enormous radio, these are my favorite stories.
The Swimmer - a film I feel the need to return to, from time to time, as I get older and older - trouble is I don't know why.
Kym Lardner You enjoy Burt Lancaster in a Speedo, you naughty boy.
That is but one of the film's delights...
a disappointment. . .
great voice!
The interviewer brings a lot of depth and knowledge to the conversation.
As Cheever says, the publishers' refrain that "short stories don't sell" is utter crap. They don't like them because they can't generally be optioned into electronic media, is all.
Cheever very nice about Updike and Bellow - and honest.
Where is the long overdue 2 hour documentary about Cheever?
Love the Altman shout out: "and after Altman, a line mumbled..."
of course a post by The noochnator2 is superbly interesting & meaningful. thank you again!
did they ever remaster The Swimmer with Miles Davis music?
It brings about the vestiges of a true life story to speculate on and on. I used to bear the gist of his short stories. Now more into the mind parasites by Collins Wilson
am reading his biography right now, very good
by Blake Bailey? Me too. Halfway through. I came across a bit about him being on the Dick Cavett show and I sought youtube for it. Cavett show has uploaded many old vids, but alas no Cheever (yet). Cheers.
Yeah, same here. Reading his biography a few pages at a time this past year... absorbing...
P.S: Love the Cabin
I fear my orgasm has left me a cripple
:)
Seinfeld talks about this
What do we know about the interviewer, Stephen Banker? Is he still around?
He died-- he was a close friend of writer James Fallows.
He had nothing to do with film, The Swimmer? He appeared in the film, so he must have had something to do with the film. He was a very confused man.
@Thomas Pynchon I'm not your Bud. You are quite confused as well.
@Thomas Pynchon Ok Bud. Have you Bud seen the Swimmer Bud? Bud John Cheever was in the movie. That was my point. If John Cheever were in the film then he must have had something to do with the film.
@Thomas Pynchon Well that's an interesting response. If I'm not your Bud, why do you keep calling me Bud?
@Thomas Pynchon I don't like you either.
@Thomas Pynchon I have no idea who the hell you are.
COkoos' Nest? Cuckoo's Nest.
posh american accent. Sadly gone
A friend of mine refers to this as Westchester Lockjaw
Falconer is such an overrated novel. Cheever borrows from The Count of Monte Cristo.
That's fair. But Wapshot Chronicle cannot be overrated. Has not been.
Uh. Uh. Cheever stumbles over his words. Cheever was not a great speaker.
You must be fun at parties.
@@tamburello9902 I don't go to parties. You seem like a boring person if you have nothing better to do than bother me.
I actually think he is a good speaker. Great accent and interesting and open in what he is sharing.
