  • In this video, we take a tour of a super cheap and easy van build conversion. One thing I always recommend is to use furniture, plastic drawers and plastic totes as a simple, light, easy and fast conversion. In this video we see just how cheap, fast and easy it can be. Thanks so much KC for laying out this wonderful road map!

    Refreshing to see a practical set up. I've honestly really never understood the $80k+ builds for tiny living. I've always felt it defeated the purpose of it all so I absolutely love what she has done here. The crawl before you walk makes me appreciate this even more. Congrats to her!!!

      @@susie9893 Also it scares me when I hear of people selling their homes and then spending $80,000 on their RV whether it’s a home built or a fancy store-bought because those vehicles are just going to go down in value and what are they going to do in 10 years from now when it’s not worth anything and they didn’t invest in property which would go up in value and it always scares me for the person I’m watching.

    • @Remianen
      @Remianen Před rokem +6

      I can understand it due to people I've met. Guy who lives near me built out his fourth van last summer and spent $58k (plus the cost of the brand new Transit AWD) on it. His previous three vans (and the skoolie) are currently earning him money on Outdoorsy. They were significantly cheaper so with this build, he wanted to go all-out and add stupid stuff (like a cruise ship bathroom/shower). (Ironically, he was the one who ignited my initial interest in van life but Bob makes it so much more accessible) But for a first timer? No way would I even consider that!

    • @stephenbland7461

      100% agree.
      Just giving a shed load of cash to a professional van builder, together with a top of the range van, seems to defeat the object. Imho, if I had that much cash, I’d keep it a contingency fund for when I really need it, (repairs, medical etc.) rather than spending it on a fancy van build, which, by definition, just like me, will go wrong at some point. But that is just my opinion.
      Your minimalist build is my way also.

Working with dementia patients is difficult enough, but must be extra difficult with it being your Mother. I feel for ya. I became dissabled 3 years back and list all my savings/money and mostvof my posessions (including a nice truck that was paid off and a new car that was almost paid off) so doing the van life will be difficult. Was going to buy my old truck back off my in laws, and look for a 17 ft. RV trailer and put a 250cc dual sport motorcycle/electric mountain bike on the back. Sorry for the long text. agreed. another word would be 'modular'. if anything happens to the van, a breakdown or even a crash, just grab everything and throw it in the next van, in a storage, or in a rented place. much better than putting in months of work and $$$ into a vehicle that is rolling outdoors where, exposed to plenty of things that can go wrong, no matter how careful we are. people put super complex plumbing and electric that stays with the van forever.

      I think it's even more important to be inclusive by not judging. I appreciate some of the clever minimalistic builds but the primitive austerity delayed me from seriously considering vanlife for years. It wasn't until I saw curtains, quilts, rugs, showers that I reconsidered; maybe I didn't have to give up creature comforts like makeup and craft supplies to do this. I still appreciate minimalistic builds without giving up my own asthetics. The "zen-life" isn't for me.

    I have a 120 watt Everstart inverter I picked up at a Walmart in Arkansas for ten bucks. I use it in my minivan. It has 2 AC outlets and 2 usb ports. It is cheap, low wattage and indispensable. I love the "non build". I started out sleeping on the floor of my minivan. I had a make shift bedroll that consisted of a yoga mat, a piece of a waffle mattress and a couple of twin size blankets. I graduated to a camp cot and added a mummy bag courtesy of my brother in law. I was able to stow my plastic drawers and containers under the cot and use it for a seat. 2 milk crates, a bedside table and an old toy box rounded out the furnishings. I secured para-cord at 4 points around the van, pulled it up tight, tied it off and hung black sheets doubled over the para-cord to use as curtains. I ran like that for several weeks. I learned a lot about what works and what does not work without spending much money. Great job KC. Thanks for the video Mr Wells.

    Every once in awhile you come across a quality person. One who does not stumble for words during a conversation. Someone with a calm intellect that is confident in who they are and shows no signs of being a poser in life. From the videos the last few months and the on camera interactions with KC, I see that she is that kind of quality person. Bob, you def made the right choice. Looking forward to KC's build out and hope to see some creativity and innovation with it.
    On a different note I have a tip for better fuel mileage that I have yet to see any van dweller touch on or utilize. I am an independent race crew tech and spend a lot of time travelling and camping. When the races are close enough to home, I pull a teardrop behind my MINI Cooper and when I need to fly, I usually rent a van or suv and car camp at the racetrack (much cheaper than a hotel plus I get more sleep because I'm already at the track). Being around race cars I know that aero plays a huge part in managing fuel windows and race strategy so we generally try to make the underside of the vehicle as smooth and slippery as possible in a passive way so the active (non passive) aero is more effective for down force and fuel economy. My neighbor has been boondocking on and off for about 8 years and couple years ago upgraded to a Sprinter van 3.0l diesel and often moaned about mileage (16.6-18.5 mpg hwy) after his build. So over the course of a couple weekends we did some underside aero and attached some sheet aluminum to smooth the undercarriage and over his last 5 trips his mileage has increased to over 22 mpg and has been as high as 26 mpg. For the record he sometimes hauls a motorcycle on the back so that will always create more drag but we are planning on making a fiberglass cover for it to slipstream a little better. Most body shops could do it and certainly the more "adventurous" van builder could do it themselves. Tip: Be sure to use sound deadening and bracing to keep it from vibrating at high speed. One of the loudest street test drives of my life lol. I wish you and KC the best of luck. Motor On!

    Love that term! It's a put-in, not a build-out. This was an awesome video. It is inspiring to see that you can get started using existing furniture for a low cost put-in and not need all the time, money and energy to build-out a van to make it comfortable.

    • @kernjames
      @kernjames Před 3 lety +2

      @@valeriehancotte-galan4790 You make an interesting point, and I realize her drawers look like the kind in Walmart that you can attach little wheels to on the bottom the structure, but I don't think her structures have wheels on the bottom. Also the actual drawers in the drawer structure have wheels on them. Unlike Walmart drawers are constructed, her's aren't just plastic sliding on plastic when you open or shut them. The actual drawer that slides open has a small wheels attached to the drawer on both sides of the drawer on the outside of the drawer Those wheels slide and rotate in a small railing inside the structure, that is secured with screws, next to the actual drawer, as a person opens and shuts the drawer. I hope I explained that to where you can understand and I didn't confuse you. Even though I can see it in my mind it is hard to explain.

I plan on doing van life in a mini van to start. I am going to try for one year for starters. I will keep my house and I plan on just working at temp agencies while I travel. Thank you I have been watching several of your videos. I think I have enough to get started. If all goes well I will return and sell my home and continue van life.
