It was smart to drop the slip joint, but it is part of a bigger lesson here. This is a master level craftsman showing. It isn't about getting fancy and experimenting with something new and fun. It is showing that you can do the basics to a level of perfection that only a master can achieve. Having a cool design isn't going to make up for having a bad weld or uneven grind. Follow the requirements to a 'T' and don't give them a reason to doubt your skill. You have this!

Hi Will, greetings from the UK. As someone a bit older than you, I’ve had my fair share of projects where the deadline’s really tight. I trust you can do this, but if you start to feel like you can’t complete the set to the best of your abilities, just know that it’s ok. If you decide you need to take a year, that won’t be a failure.

I will be praying that you don't have to restart any more knives. I know you'll be super bummed if you don't manage to finish in time for the blade show, but when you are almost there, just ask yourself if you are 100% happy with what you've produced. I'd encourage you to spend a few hours praying about it, too. I have faith that you can produce the knives in the time you need, but even if you reach the standard needed to qualify, you still need to be comfortable with what you've made and only you will know if you will be looking back at this in a few years and knowing if you are truly happy with what you took to the show...... those knives are going to be out in the world for a very long time. You are the last and most important judge when it comes to submitting for the master smiths and you need to check back in with that judge on a regular basis all the way to the start of the show, just like you're doing at the moment. I am soooooo excited to see the final knives 😊👍👍👍👍👍
