- Building a House Start to Finish | House Framing Begins Episode 5 starts out with us waterproofing cinder block foundation. Then our local energy company shows up to hook up the gas and electricity. At the same time the carpenters arrive and begin framing our house. Overall, this is a simple home design but this construction site feels a little overwhelming, although, we never expected building a house from scratch to be easy! We can not wait to move into our new custom home!

Love the channel. As a builder/ Framer for 30+ yrs , still building custom waterfront homes on Cape Cod , try to take one step at a time , they are all important.
Sealing the footings and foundation is very important, French drains , sealing the inside of the foundation,etc.
16” OC is a great choice for the joists not 2’ OC . Try to use lvl for support joists and headers not “ I joist “ . Advantec is the best 3/4” t&g subfloor , use advantec glue.
Good to see 2x6 framing, make sure to seal under the wall before it goes on the floor . And between walls. Get yourself the best windows . Anderson. Most heat loss is through windows and doors , then roofs and walls .
Thanks JN so glad you are enjoying these episodes! We are new to building, so learning everything as we go! So really appreciate all the tips and pointers. I’m sure we will make tons of mistakes, but learn from them in the end!
Yes we have a combo of I Joists and LVLs beneath the subfloor and we did make sure to seal! We went with a local company here known for very high quality, definitely set a decent budget for windows to help with that heat loss. As you would know, it gets real COLD, in the winters. I assume Cape Cod will have similar temps.
The framing stage is so exciting to watch, impressive to see the talent and skill of the contractors as they get the walls standing! Glad you are having fun with it!

Did you guys have to plan out all the measurements for the doors, walls, rooms, etc?? Or did the carpenters help with that?
Thank you!! We drew up our house plans in CAD and got them approved by engineers! The house plan is finalized before framing comes in. But you can make minor changes if need be!

I enjoy watching videos like this, and great watching the progress (obviously I have a ways to go to catch up). However, man o man is that text popping up in the center of the screen when you are talking annoying. Everything else is great!
