    I play live alot...it's amazing how you play things flawlessly at home by yourself. But then you get in front of a crowd and it all goes to $h!t. Tons of respect for these guys to play so well in front of a crowd critiquing your every note.

      Same with recording. As soon as they cue you, the mind and the fingers loose each other- at least for me. Mad respect for these dreadnaught masters.

    • @toddjones9975
      @toddjones9975 Před rokem +14

      The reason is this. When you’re by yourself you aren’t concerned about the outcome, you just play. You get in front of people and end up trying too hard. Read “The Inner Game Of Music”

    • @patricklundquist9869
      @patricklundquist9869 Před rokem +6

      @@toddjones9975 So true. Hit a clam at home and you will immediately forgive yourself and keep right on playing like it never happened. On stage you judge yourself harshly and it affects what comes next as you desperately try forget, recover and carry on. That look on Mathew Taylor's face as he finishes the first tune says it all. I think the real pros are so good because the stage is their home, so they play like they're at home.

    As a guitar player (note- who CANNOT do what these folks are doing) I really enjoy the flat pickers who try to incorporate the lower, even bass notes, of the chords they are soloing over, it really adds a wholeness to a single guitar's sound. And I know it isn't easy!

    Jokes aside. This is one of the most wholesome videos I've watched in a long time. You can really feel that in the end, it's all about the music.
    In my eyes, all of these guys is a winner. Not just because they all play fantstic guitar, but also because they all seem to be modest, decent people suporting each other.

    Is there somewhere we can find out what tuning some of these guys were playing in? Amazing. As someone already commented. I am inspired and humbled. :) Thanks for sharing these awesome pickers.

      Chordgoblin, for many years the festival (Walnut Valley Association) would not allow anyone to record the contest. Instead they hired a company to film it (Legleiter Video) and only offered each contestant the opportunity to purchase their own performance, and no other part of the contest. As far as I know most people didn't purchase the recordings, and if they did they didn't post them ( most of us work hard on our contest arrangements and prefer they not be posted online for other contestants to see and hear). I did purchase mine, I used them to critique myself and determine what I needed to improve on. My performance in 2019 was not recorded, Mr. Legleiter passed away and I don't know of any other recordings. However, I did post my performance from 2013 on my YT channel, I can post a link to my final round and you can follow links to my channel for the other round and trophy presentation. But I don't know of any other videos posted, aside from this one by The Acoustic Shoppe. czcams.com/video/OsjkLqENEIA/video.html

      @@AcousticShoppe I'm really glad you recorded and posted it and hope you do it for many future years. I want to watch other contestants' videos not to copy them but for the huge amounts of inspiration! And to see what general ideas the winners are executing.

      One of the greatest performances at the WInfield flatpicking contest was this one - it's on several records: czcams.com/video/Iy87kXZpeWo/video.html. He also won the Fiddle contest at Winfield.

    Seems like the pickers get better each year. A bunch of new Bryan Sutton's emerging every year!
