    I began playing "bluegrass techniques" about 57 years ago. I was 12 years old and ""Wildwood Flower" was the very first tune. David is among my favorite acoustic pickers. I am from the Catskills in upstate N.Y. Since retiring I am back up here in these hills that hold so many fond memories.

    One of the important things David Grier said (which flew on by), while trying to show us how to start to learn a cross picking patter, was "oh my gosh, I can't do it when I try to think about it". If you want to build speed, you've got to practice long enough to cross the point of thinking about what you're doing. It may take two or three hours of steady practice or it may take twelve hours of practice, but when you stop focusing on 'what' you are doing and 'only on the melody of the tune you are playing', your hands will coordinate with what's going on in your head. If you're thinking of the tune up to speed, your hands will follow suit.

    • @Scratch_Monsters_Golf
      @Scratch_Monsters_Golf Před 3 lety +1

      It really is. The “pulse,” or as I think of it “dynamics,” is a HUGE part of what separates the greatest players from the really good players. Once you get the notes under your fingers, you’ve got the easy part down. After that, you get into the important stuff like dynamics and swing and feel...and that part is a lifelong learning process.

    If you play on the bridge pins on an acoustic in the middle of the bridge, you can play that way confortably on a hollowboy electric that has some some space between the bridge and tailpiece, like on a 5420 with bigsby. Just get some double side (sticks to itself) velcro strap to wrap around the strings between the bridge and bigsby. Won't affect how the bigsby works. I cut enought to get pushed back against the bigsby and leave a 1/4" gap behind the bridge. You won't feel the gap in crosspicking, but its good to have in palm muting. You can play in that position without scraping up the side of your picking hand, and it moves fluidly against the fuzzy side of the velcro. There's no way that I'm the first to do this. If I am, you can call it Some Guy's strap. Note: You can probably find the strap in 4" width, so you'll have to cut it to a bit narrower.

    I'm just curious but why do bluegrass flat pickers usually use a capo to facilitate playing in a C chord open string shape? He is playing in the Key of E with his capo at the fourth fret so why not just play in E with no capo? Tony Rice favors the key of D so usually capos at the second fret. What is so magical about the C chord shape?

    • @Moovment-Media
      @Moovment-Media Před 5 lety +1

      It is just a personal choice also it gives the guitar a higher pitch as you are playing higher up the neck.
      There is not really a right or wrong way. Just depends on the player.

    • @thirdactwarrior317
      @thirdactwarrior317 Před 5 lety +5

      In addition to what JoeShmo said, it also gives the player a different pallet of chord inversions. In your hypothetical, I find using the open C shape and the 4 and 5 chords of F and G, gives me all sorts of opportunities for hammer-ons, pull-offs, bass runs, etc. It is harder for me to do all those embellishments in E.
      BTW, I took a workshop from Grier once. I wish I could have absorbed more than a small fraction of what he taught!

    • @Moovment-Media
      @Moovment-Media Před 5 lety

      @@thirdactwarrior317 You are correct.
      It gives more opportunity to use those kinds of open strings and such, as well as tonally changing the sound of the guitar.

    • @gatoryak7332
      @gatoryak7332 Před 4 lety +2

      If you practice improvising C-shapes, and you give it some serious effort and time, you will find that Bluegrass and fiddletune melodies are are right there under your fingers if you make the chord changes at the right time. Plus, you have two root notes on the low-E string (G and F) for powerful bass tones, especially valuable when there is no bass fiddle in the mix. G-shapes are almost as easy and utilize the low-E string better because the key tone is on the thickest string. D-shapes can get some pretty sounds that C-shapes capoed up two frets can't quite suffice for some tunes, but the D-shapes are not as easy to improvise at high tempo. Playing in D-shapes can sound wimpy because you won't have much bass unless you drop the low-E to a low-D, but that changes the G-chord.

    • @stepno
      @stepno Před 4 lety

      Having the fifth note of the scale handy on both the low string and high string is just right in first position, both in the C chord shape and the G chord shape, even for the simplest boom-chuck accompaniment. (Wildwood Flower in the video.) And once you get started there, the C scale shapes are familiar too. Just thinkin' out loud. Interesting that blues likes E and A shapes.
