India in earlier days was supposed to be in the middle of USA n USSR but they were more tilted toward socialism. After the wake up call under P V Narasimha Rao n FM Manmohan Singh India adopted new economic policy 1991. Eventually this opened India's economy to world n started moving toward capitalism. The result was a faster growing economy.
So today India is indeed behind USA and far away from USSR in the graph (fortunately).
