Apone tried to tell the LT it was a bad idea to sweep the nest without live ammo but he wouldn't listen and Hudson came through when the chips were down and died fighting. But Lt Gorman made a lot of really really bad choices that got him and his men killed. Remember he was on his very first combat drop, he would have been smart to listen to his Sgt, he would have been smart to leave somebody on the Saluco that could pilot the second drop ship (like Bishop for example). He would have been smart not to let his air support just sit on the deck where it could be easily attacked or infiltrated. He would have been smart to get the colony's com gear working in case something went wrong with the one on the APC, he would have been smart to pull his men back out of the damn nest the moment he knew that he couldn't safely engage in a gun battle in the nest. All the stuff you talk about except for the gunfire that happened in the nest was on one person the LT not the whole platoon. It's said that James Cameron gave each of the actors playing Colonial Marines a detailed "biography" of their character's and their personalities. So that's why this group of Marines is as individualistic as any group of soldiers might be. You've got the heroes, the cowards, the in-between types. Instead of a bunch of stereotypical "Rambos" that so many other movies have, when depicting a group of soldiers.
"t's said that James Cameron gave each of the actors playing Colonial Marines a detailed "biography" of their character's and their personalities." That's a good idea and shouldn't take much time or effort to do. If other directors don't do that, they should.
I am not kidding when I say that I have seen this movie over 60 times since it was released...and if it was on TV again, I would still watch it! It had everything, and it kept you on the edge of your seat! I have found very few believeable movies, that can keep up to this one. You have a future where corporate money, greed, profit, ambition, are still the basis of throwing the human equation into a situation and it's human determination and defiance by so few who won't be snuffed out! Because their actions for others are more important than to be lobed in with those who can't see beyond lining their own pockets! God bless those who have compassion, standing up to those who are only interested in making a quick buck! They are the real heros! That's why this movie stands the test of time! It's a story for all the ages! Thank you James Cameron and Ridley Scott!
The greatest sequel ever made.. You've other great sequels like Terminator 2, French Connection II, Lethal Weapon 2 and many others but the queen of sequels is ALIENS.
@Contrarian DC I'm a WHAT???? How could you say something so cruel and mean? Are you a Republican? Justice now needs to be done. Hate speech should be a federal crime! I was being funny. "Ha ha ha ha" is what you *should* have been thinking. I am funny.
most people don't realise this but there's a reason why Hudson is so worked up in the second scene (the impending nuclear explosion). as soon as Bishop pointed to the emergency venting in the distance, Hudson immediately had a melt-down and paced around in a really agitated manner. Apart from Bishop, Hudson (being the technical guy) is the one who immediately realised the following within micro-seconds a) that emergency venting meant the cooling system is fucked and will lead to nuclear core overload very soon b) there's no way to remotely summon the ship from Sulaco to pick them up c) they are going to die very soon
Hudson is the audience identification figure. He's the only one allowed to show raw fear about the situation. Everyone else acts so stoic. But to his credit, Hudson never backed out of a fight. He was there for you when you needed him.
@@jimlahey854 Actually it wasn't obvious. 25 years of watching this movie, I never noticed that detail and made the connection, but continue with being a smug jerk if you must. .
Ray Lovejoy is at least 50% responsible for the success of Aliens. Just in this short clip alone you can see his brilliance on display. This man edited Kubrick's 2001 a Space Odyssey as well as the Shining. The editing here is no exception and it really adds to Cameron's directing which is obviously on a whole other level as well. Look at how the characters fill the screen while they are talking and how out of focus backgrounds turn sharp just at the right moment to catch the characters facial expressions. It's as beautifully directed as a classic orchestra piece or a ballet.
One of the best scenes in the movie. My stomach turned, as I thought, "What could possibly come next?" All the actors in this scene were at the top of their game. Their feelings are so raw and real, we the audience feel as anxious as they do. Magnificent filmmaking. James Cameron is a creative genius. This movie is also cast to perfection.
I’ve always felt like this was the BEST movie for all of these actors/actresses. How do you top this? After all of these years, it’s still one of the coolest and most memorable movies.
You can tell Breaking Bad took alot of inspiration from this film. Not the specific subject matter obviously, but taking your main characters and placing them in increasingly escalating, and seemingly impossible to escape/survive situations.
Great scene. The creatures closing in on them. The emergency venting giving them the hurry up. Ripley making the tough decisions. Bishop doing it for the team.
Because Hudson behaved how many of us would, at least internally. The situation seems so hopeless and his antics sort of alleviate the tension by just submitting to its inevitability.
Any normal person would act like Hudson in a situation like this. Imagine being stuck in his shoes and you have around 15 hours before you are either blown to atoms or a Xeno gets you before that.
Everyone always praises Hudson (justified) but I love Hicks as well. The way he says we got problems is timeless. Whenever I have a tough day at work and there's an overflow of stuff I just think of hicks attitude and its a winner. Unfazed, unmoved, what's next? Such a great great film
Hudson was smarter than someone so high strung should ever be. He knew the score, and he made sure everyone else knew it too. He said they wouldn't last 17 Hours there, and they don't. According to the timeline, it's 15.5 hours after initial contact that the second attack comes.
Hudson is the tech guy. Note how in the APC he secures everybody before they leave Sulaco, how he does the door overrides and computer stuff. He's not stupid, he is just very easily demoralized.
Thedutchjelle Yeah, he does the door bypasses, the tracker readouts (both at the station & mobile), and many other things. Like Ripley tells him: " We really need you, and I'm sick of your bullshit"; she wasn't that kind to Ash: "What do you want me to do?","Just what you've been doing Ash. Nothing." Ouch lol. He's useful, and even if he doesn't believe it himself, he's brave. It came out in the initial contact, and just before he died.
I love the way Bill Paxtons character really made me tired of his whining but he knew enough that the instant he sees venting he knew it meant that the reactor was on its way to blowing. too many movies make their characters one dimensional but Cameron has guys like Hudson who is emotionally immature but is a competent soldier
Hudson was amazing, smart, funny "maybe we got them demoralized" and ultimately a badass when the time came. This cast was simply perfect, I also love how Hicks reacts at the "4 hours" of Bishop, such a realistic reaction
Bill paxton was brilliant some actors go unnoticed in thier careers but he was well remembered for this performence he was the original coward who turned into a warrior at the end RIP
I agree with your comment but I wouldn't describe Hudson as a coward. The situation becomes too much for him to cope with (same with Gorman) but this provides a perfect contrast to the quiet controlled calm of Ripley & Hicks. He's a fighter but sensible enough to grasp the magnitude of the odds stacked against him. He is brash & overconfident & gets the wind knocked out of his sails but ultimately he is a Marine & does his duty. The rest is just him failing to control his emotions & running his mouth.
No way was he a coward! The character was absolutely essential to building dramatic tension. He was the link between the audience and the horror on screen. Hes basically what most people would do in a situation like that. Imagine if you will, being surrounded by acid blooded killing machines that want to use you as an incubator for more of their kind as you die in the most horrific way possible...
I wouldn't call him a coward. He's your typical new recruit that's overconfident and just lost it all when they were facing an enemy FAR beyond their caliber.
this film matched the character development of the original... so rare in sequels, but you knew and had connection to each character in one way or another... loved them or hated them, and understood how they felt about each other, really nice
Apart from the epic sentry guns scene, Bishop's one subtle line:"I'm afraid I have some bad news" was a much smoother transition than abruptly switching Ripley's confrontation of Burke to the emergency vent scene. This scene as well as the other sentry guns scene should've been left in the theatrical version.
40 megatons at that range would vaporize Hadley's Hope. That's why I have always rolled my eyes at the Colonial Marines game suggesting that Hadley's Hope survived the explosion, albiet heavily damaged.
Rian Johnson's Crackpipe Rey is a bad character, with too many attributes given to her but not earned. Ripley isn't overpowered but brave and pragmatic, it makes her likeable in a way that Rey isn't.
I love this scene for what little it gives. As the audience we only see them looking at the ammunition round deplete and their commentary on it. Leaves a lot to the imagination.
Superb scene that makes the film EVEN better. All of the actors are on top form, but I really love the subtlety in Sigourney's eyes at 0:53. Great acting!
Cameron was very involved with the sound details in this movie. the sound of the pulse rifles, the aliens, the doors, etc. it actually delayed some of the movie cuz of how long they were taking to get the sound right.
vasquez looks like she is holding back another scolding for hudson when he says that bishop should go, he may be synthetic but she considers him as one of them
It's even more terrifying when they abruptly back off, as if they are planning something else. And then they indeed do - by using the vents above them.
Sorry if someone’s already said this. Originally in an extended version of this scene, the Aliens can still be heard banging against the pressure door while the group figure out a plan to get off world. Right after Bishop says “I may be synthetic, but I’m not stupid” the banging stops. Vasquez is first realise this, upon which Hicks says the line “They’re in the complex”. The scene can be viewed on CZcams.
This was the very first movie I ever saw with Lance Henriksen and other movies I saw with him was the original Terminator,The Quick and the Dead,PumpkinHead,PumpkinHead 4:Blood Feud,AVP:Alien vs. Predator,Powder,Big Legend,Alien 3,Mimic 3:Sentinel,Abominable,Close Encounters with the Third Kind,Jagged Edge,Man's Best Friend and AntiBody but you know what would be neat if they could do another Alien film with Sigourney Weaver and Lance Henriksen or another Predator movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger now that would be awesome.
It's fascinating to watch Ripley become more machine-like and violent even as Bishop becomes more and more human throughout the movie. A very interesting study in character development.
"More bad news" - this is the honest assessment of the entire series of movies :) This is what happens when your struggling against evil aliens AND backstabbing greedy untrustworthy people :)
This is such a brilliant film, my favs of all time. Even though it's more than 30 years old, it still holds it's own against todays film. The directors cut is a must.
Released 1986.7.14/18? Too early to make any more sense It could've been filmed 1985.9.30 ~ 12(director's cut pre-main), 1985.12 ~ spring 1986(main theatrical), released autumn 1986
Hudson is such a good character in this, all bullshit aside, if this was real EVERYBODY would be like him. Geniunely terrified and anxious as fuck, and with good reason too. Lets be honest please, the cool headed Ripley types wouldn't exist, you might get one really brave bugger but i highly doubt it! He looks at that ammo count thinking "holy fuck", notice the earlier in the movie bravado showing Ripley all the awesome firepower they were taking, has completely vanished! I guess i can relate to Hudson the most, in a normal war, you do have a good chance to surrender and maybe take a bit of a beating, but in this, those Aliens are coming to rip your head apart, and he absolutely knows it!
It was here where Ripley started to respect Bishop, who'd have thought out of everyone it would be only Ripley & Bishop that would survive until the 3rd movie.
+ zero3778 On the bright side, this saves them all the trouble & effort involved in nuking the site from orbit. Saves on the cost of the missile & warhead, too, which I imagine aren't cheap. 😃👍
Steve Rogers But I heard that installation had a substantial dollar value attached to it. If the company can prove that the atmosphere processor had a design flaw, maybe their insurance would cover it. However, the policy probably included a clause that required the company to mitigate damages, so nuking it from orbit would most likely result in the claim being denied.
Actually, it wasn't. A "laptop computer" is just that - a self-contained computer that fits in your lap. What Bishop used was literally a portable terminal. All it did was provide an interface to the facility's mainframe and the dropship's computer.
@@0megacron He didn't say it was a laptop computer. I know Rob H and he is intimately familiar with all the tech in all Alien franchises and knew full well what it was.
@@JohnFoxx108 I'm responding to the comment, not the person, and I have no idea who Rob H is or who you are. His comment says a portal terminal is equal to a laptop. I'm pointing out that they're not the same thing, and that the device used in this scene is literally a portable terminal.
One of the GREATEST Sci-Fi Movies ever made! Stellar cast, filmography, plot & story direction....a rare instance where a sequel outdid its predecessor. & The inclusion of legendary Bill Paxton, thank u for the wonderfully diverse characters u played to perfection....I salute u good sir & may u RIP!! 🤩🤩
Fantastic scene from a fantastic film. The point of the scene was to emphasize just what a relentless, overwhelming and lethal threat the aliens are even in the face of massive firepower. It succeeded in its goal for the viewer as even these weapons failed with 2,000 rounds and all they have left are "four pulse rifles with 50 rounds each". You could nerd out and say there wouldn't be many aliens left after all this but that misses the point of the scene. Just for the record - we start with 158 colonists - Newt - Chestburster =156. Assume a death rate of 30% on colony attack (battle + those lost in surgery) gives you around 105 alien warriors. Hive Ambush kills +12 or so. APC+ 1, Dropship +1, Sentry Guns +30 at least, 3 guarding the queen. Max 50 participating in last stand battle
I love Bishop. He was one of the best characters in the movie. Honestly tho, everyone was good in this one. Aliens is my favorite out of all of the Alien movies.
I wonder how many of the Xenomorphs were slaughtered before the sentry-guns ran out of ammunition? Anyway when Hudson started whining i'm surprised Vasquez didn't beat the crap out of him.
There were probably 155 to begin with, and the initial encounter in the hive took about a few. Apone killed 1, Vasquez and Drake may have hit 15 - 20, Hicks got at least 2 with his shotgun, Ripley ran over 1 more. So at least 130 still remained. Even if 80 got taken out by both sentry gun emplacements, that still left maybe as many as 45 more that came in the final attack in the ceiling against Hudson, Vasquez, Gorman, and Hicks. Ripley killed 3 more in the Queen's nursery.
The corporate guy says one hundred families. Assuming not everyone was infected, 155 is the low end of the estimated aliens. Could be several hundred in total.
Paxton was great melting down in this scene..The guy who plays Bishop 'I'm the only one qualified...I may be synthetic but I'm not stupid!' Sendational! 👍😆😆😇

And the fact that some of the marines kept their ammo and started using it was the only thing that kept them alive long enough for Ripley to do something to rescue them. No gunfire means that nest and all it's eggs and warriors don't get taken out when the reactor blows. It means everybody except Gorman, Ripley, Burke and Newt die right there in the nest or on the dropship. That wasn't a stupid move on the soldiers part that was them being smart enough to work around their idiot LT and their Sgt who simply couldn't just ignore the man's orders.
@@ashleighelizabeth5916 .. "Very competent?" They got themselves completely wiped out. They were supposed to be the experts in these types of situations, yet did just about everything wrong they could possibly do wrong - starting by not securing their landing area onwards. The lieutenant was out most of the time, so you can't use him alone as an excuse.
@@dwightstewart7181 yes I can because once Hicks was in charge they gave a much better accounting of themselves but by then most of the damage had been done. Lt Gorman screwed them all over. Hicks and Bishop saved Ripley and Newt.
@@ashleighelizabeth5916 .. Each of those marines, including Gorman, would have been carefully selected and received extensive training for a mission such as this. Instead, they were confused, back-talking the sergeant & lieutenant, making subversive comments, disobeying orders, and so on. In other words, they were fuckups. Hell, might as well have sent Gomer Pyle.
"Think of what? We're f*cked! We're doomed!" Hudson saying out loud what everyone's thinking.
Love Hicks' angry retort
This movie, especially the Director's Cut made you feel like you were there with them. One of the team.
Paxton owns this scene. Funny as shit in an intense sorta way. Dude was on the verge of blind panic. We're fucked!! Hahaha!
Lol!!! Right
How do I get put of this chicken shit outfit?
And Hicks is like "Will this guy ever shut the fuck up?" such as when he flat out told him that when the first Dropship went FUBAR.
The thing is, most of the time he is right. They didn't last 17 hours. They didn't survive (except Ripley)
The sound of the heavy banging and hitting is just terrifying. Xenomorphs have insane amounts of physical strength..
"t's said that James Cameron gave each of the actors playing Colonial Marines a detailed "biography" of their character's and their personalities."
That's a good idea and shouldn't take much time or effort to do.
God damn it... I miss Bill Paxton so much... Forever in our hearts!!!

most people don't realise this but there's a reason why Hudson is so worked up in the second scene (the impending nuclear explosion). as soon as Bishop pointed to the emergency venting in the distance, Hudson immediately had a melt-down and paced around in a really agitated manner.
Apart from Bishop, Hudson (being the technical guy) is the one who immediately realised the following within micro-seconds
a) that emergency venting meant the cooling system is fucked and will lead to nuclear core overload very soon
b) there's no way to remotely summon the ship from Sulaco to pick them up
c) they are going to die very soon
Hudson is the audience identification figure.
He's the only one allowed to show raw fear about the situation. Everyone else acts so stoic.
But to his credit, Hudson never backed out of a fight. He was there for you when you needed him.
Hicks seemed to figure it out straight away too.
Thank you for pointing out the obvious!

Ray Lovejoy also was an assistant editor for Stanley's 1964 nuclear war satire Dr. Strangelove Or: How I Learned To Stop And Love The Bomb.
One of the smartest lines in the movie was when Hudson says to Ripley regarding Newt “why don’t you put her in charge?”
Então Ripley pede que ele aceite a situação , ele não tem escolha .
Lol. My favorite too. That, and, if it comes to that, I'll do us both.
Why
@@AbuHajarAlBugatti Newt knew when the aliens came out and she knew the venting systems around the complex.
Watching it now it just feels like these people are there, experiencing it for real. Theres literally no point where I think, "These are actors".
Aliens is one of those rare films: it's damn near perfect. Compare it to the shit Hollywood is shovelling these days.
Great scene. The creatures closing in on them. The emergency venting giving them the hurry up. Ripley making the tough decisions. Bishop doing it for the team.
The behavior of Hudson, it made you feel that this situation was real.
One of a verry few where a sequel becomes a masterpiece!
@Mark Richards Som true!
@Mark Richards terminator 2, godfather 2 and empire strikes back are the only sequels on aliens level
@Mark Richards road warrior is a excellent film definitely worthy of consideration
Also dark knight
I think the alien queen was a weakness to the movie and inconsistent with the first instalment .
Everyone always praises Hudson (justified) but I love Hicks as well. The way he says we got problems is timeless. Whenever I have a tough day at work and there's an overflow of stuff I just think of hicks attitude and its a winner. Unfazed, unmoved, what's next?
Such a great great film
I absolutely love how feminine and confident Ripley was written in this
Hicks: yeah I guess we can just count you out of everything, Hudson. 😒
Hudson: *Thats right, man*
This film is just masterful. Not a single bad scene and too many great scenes to count.
drop your linen and stop your grinnin. immortal words from mr bill paxton.
I certainly hope the Colonial Marines changed their rescue protocol from 17 days to 48 hours.
@@Thedutchjelle "very easily demoralized."
Dude, his unit suffered over 50% casualties and it's command structure. That isn't "easily" demoralized.
I love the way Bill Paxtons character really made me tired of his whining but he knew enough that the instant he sees venting he knew it meant that the reactor was on its way to blowing. too many movies make their characters one dimensional but Cameron has guys like Hudson who is emotionally immature but is a competent soldier
So many great lines in just this small piece of the film. What a great movie Aliens is
Hudson whined a lot....but I liked him.
sillyone52062 "..game over man game over "
Normal human reaction in situation like this. Others of the crew are just too tough.
damn right consider their situation, i would be having a meltdown!
Hudson in the end was a badass and went down fighting
He whined until the final fight started, then he stayed at front of the group fighting the aliens.
'Ya, I guess we can count out of everything then' - suttle yet resounding. Can just feel the pressure rising and then lowering with that line.
Hicks knew before Bishop reported the overload. He looked awfully doubtful when he mentioned the rescue team would be sent after 17 days.
Game OVER man!
Game OVER!!!
Hudson was amazing, smart, funny "maybe we got them demoralized" and ultimately a badass when the time came. This cast was simply perfect, I also love how Hicks reacts at the "4 hours" of Bishop, such a realistic reaction
the spit flying from hicks yelling adds to it for me . no time for pleasantries or calls to impress.
Best Sci-Fi Action film of the eighties. They don't make film sequels like this anymore. Thanks for uploading.

Great scenes, RIP Bill, sad loss. Sigourney Weaver was nominated for an Oscar for this role, the first time in an action adventure movie I believe
I don't think he became brave;
he lost it like Tony Montana
I will always love Ripley. One of the strongest women in movies ever!! :D
smittywerbenyeagermanjensen next to Rey
Rian Johnson's Crackpipe ummm no
Joaquin Alvarez sure...... Ripley needed some training while Rey didnt
Rian Johnson's Crackpipe Rey is a bad character, with too many attributes given to her but not earned. Ripley isn't overpowered but brave and pragmatic, it makes her likeable in a way that Rey isn't.
Django Freeman oh come on..... Rey is a badass
I absolutely love the sound the doors make when they open and close. They sound so much better than Star Trek's doors.
Steel Here 'wha-dummmmm-chuk'
Cameron was very involved with the sound details in this movie. the sound of the pulse rifles, the aliens, the doors, etc. it actually delayed some of the movie cuz of how long they were taking to get the sound right.
No wonder there were very few aliens in the Queen's chamber, pretty much explains why Ripley's attack on the hive had relatively little resistance
Bill Paxton was great. RIP.
I must have watched this movie at least a dozen times. A classic science fiction horror movie that established the bar in making such movies.

God I looove this film, ageless❤
I swear to god, this has to be one of the best films ever made!!! Bless you James Cameron ❤
The sound of the xenos slamming on the blast doors is still terrifying to me, it just evokes a sight of them smashing on it in violent rage.
It's even more terrifying when they abruptly back off, as if they are planning something else. And then they indeed do - by using the vents above them.
@@SoldierOfFatethat is after the second time they try to rush the corridor and we’re pushed back.
That is freaky knowing the only thing keeping you safe is a pressure door, pray it doesn’t break. 😐

This freaked me out too, but not as much as Jaws, or the Exorcist, in their day.

Sorry if someone’s already said this. Originally in an extended version of this scene, the Aliens can still be heard banging against the pressure door while the group figure out a plan to get off world. Right after Bishop says “I may be synthetic, but I’m not stupid” the banging stops.

I always liked Bishop - he may have been synthetic but he certainly wasn't stupid...
He was well-acted by Lance Henriksen, as well.
It's fascinating to watch Ripley become more machine-like and violent even as Bishop becomes more and more human throughout the movie. A very interesting study in character development.

37 years old, I cant believe it 😮
Now THAT's how you build tension! Watching the ammo deplete shows the sheer number or what they're up against.
Honestly this is kinda brilliant. I'm sure it saved on money and it builds up a shit ton of tension just watching the ammo count slowly go down
I love that soft chuckle Hicks gives after Bishop tells him 4 hours till it blows.
It was here where Ripley started to respect Bishop, who'd have thought out of everyone it would be only Ripley & Bishop that would survive until the 3rd movie.
Don’t let the emergency venting distract you from the fact Hudson only 4 more weeks til he was out.
"How long till it blows...." and "We got problems." Sum up what I'd say.

On the bright side, this saves them all the trouble & effort involved in nuking the site from orbit.
Aliens set a bar for sequels that has yet to be passed.
One great flick!
I didn't see this in the cinema but I imagine 'yeah right man, Bishop should go!' was met with some laughter.
"Portable terminal" = laptop
Actually, it wasn't. A "laptop computer" is just that - a self-contained computer that fits in your lap. What Bishop used was literally a portable terminal. All it did was provide an interface to the facility's mainframe and the dropship's computer.
@@0megacron He didn't say it was a laptop computer. I know Rob H and he is intimately familiar with all the tech in all Alien franchises and knew full well what it was.

"Well, that's a switch", is such a great line. Lol
Considering even one of those things is utterly lethal, I’d say it’s a miracle anyone made it off that planetoid alive.
I love Bishop. He was one of the best characters in the movie. Honestly tho, everyone was good in this one. Aliens is my favorite out of all of the Alien movies.
Hicks' 'How long til it blows' is big 2020 mood.
I wonder how many of the Xenomorphs were slaughtered before the sentry-guns ran out of ammunition?
Anyway when Hudson started whining i'm surprised Vasquez didn't beat the crap out of him.
Nicholas Maude Those poor Xenomorphs. They only wanted some food. :(
There were probably 155 to begin with, and the initial encounter in the hive took about a few.
Those sentry guns should have been programmed for "short, controlled bursts".
khartog01 Not to mention, some facebuggers in the expanded universe can deliver 2 embryos like the royal facehugger did.
Paxton was great melting down in this scene..The guy who plays Bishop 'I'm the only one qualified...I may be synthetic but I'm not stupid!' Sendational! 👍😆😆😇
