  • Here are some examples from my combination of the Roland Boutique A-01 controller with my JUPITER-Xm. In this example (ZEN-Core Tone PC025 SL-Jupiter6 2), I've configured the A-01 knob controllers to address hidden SysEx parameters in the ZEN-Core engine (that is, params that are not even in the menu system):
    * Tone Pitch Drift (demonstrated)
    * Tone Pitch Drift Cycle Number
    * Tone Partial LFO Phase Lock
    * Partial VCF Gain Correction (demonstrated)
    The results can be subtle, they can be dramatic. They can add additional character or make it sound like the synth is beyond servicing. I like a little bit of Pitch Drift and VCF Gain, they can add a little more of an analog ambiance to the Tone, without having to spend an LFO on it.
    I'm not sure if these "under the hood" settings are somehow related to the Aging feature of the JUPITER-X/Xm, the Analog Feel param, or some special sauce used to perfect the Model Expansions (J8, 106,101, etc.). But they're interesting tools in the design box.
    Special thanks to James K Hiser (@Musinigon) , Alex van den Berg, and Paul Cotton, all of who have shared so much knowledge and work around the MIDI Implementation Tome and made doing this little bit much easier.

    Gotta be my fave Roland synth, nice workout!

    That’s pretty nifty! Are all these sysex parameters documented in the MIDI implementation chart?

      Yes, though they don't come right out and tell you that these are not in the menus. But look up (PDF search) the names as I listed them in the bullet points above and you'll find the details.

    Too bad i sold my A-01. May get one again. Once you have edited hidden parameters with sysex from A01, if you write the tone on your XM, will it memorize those edited hidden parameters? thanx

    Don't forget phase shifting parameter 'VA Init phase', which can shiftet in 5° steps over 72 steps. Page 82, same as pitch drift. Comes with 3.0 Update!

    I have this problem . When I switch the envelope from filter to amp the sound changes. It looks like it use the filter setting I just made for the amp. I hope you can help me. Thanks

      I’m sorry, that’s not nearly enough information for me to diagnose. I would suggest you make sure you are only working with one Part, one Tone, and try again. Tap Part, turn off Parts 2-4 (buttons 7-9), and make sure you are only hearing Part 1 and seeing it only the display. Tsp Filter and Amp and verify on the display that you are seeing two different envelopes when you select them. Adjust ADSR for each and verify on the display that you are adjust ENV1 and ENV2 separately. Note that what you see may be different for different synths (for instance, Jupiter vs XV). In some cases the Filter and Amp and Pitch may be all lit at the same time, indicating you are adjusting their offsets simultaneously. See if you are having the same issue in different Scenes with different Tones and different Synth Models. Just go through the process of elimination until you find the issue. Good luck!

      @@RobertSaintJohn Thank you for your answer. I will explore that.

    So these are the individual parameters than are 'tweaked' by the 'vintage mode' to make your XM sound like a JP8 that really needs a service :-)

      At its worst, yes. But at the lower values, it can introduce some subtle random drift between the oscillators that you might otherwise have to do in multiple steps, or waste LFOs on

      @@RobertSaintJohn I agree it's a nice find and the ability to play with the osc and filter drift independently will achieve a degree in subtlety which is always the key for a pad to avoid sterile/cycling.
