I recently purchased a 2019 Spacia Gear as a “temporary car” while my century was on its way from Japan to Sydney. Within 2 days, it was obvious we were going to keep both cars. The Spacia is the happiest little car we’ve ever owned. Everyone smiles when it’s around. My family love it. It’s incredibly practical, and fun in silly ways. I used to drive a 911, and this gets 10x more attention and questions that the Porsche. My kid has named it “Bob” and my wife, who gives exactly zero shits about cars, legitimately has grown attached to it.

I own an N-Box in Sydney; great as a daily driver around the city. There's so much room in these that I ended up importing a bed frame/kit built specifically for the N-Box from Japan and go car camping every month or so. Just a tip that if anyone should import these keis that they should always get the turbo version, the difference between an NA and a turbo variant is literally day and night.

The good thing is the entire thing can be assembled in 10-15minutes, and requires no drilling or taking apart anything. Its very sturdy and fits perfectly around the interior edges, and comes with padding protection for the foot of the frame so it won't damage the car interior. The only down side is that importing the thing is quite expensive as its bulky and has a bit of weight to it (frame is all metal and boards are thick)

"Journalists" covering the auto industry, if they work for outlets that rely on auto manufacturer advertising, are compromised. There's more money usually to be made in more expensive models. Banging the drum for vehicles not sold in the market or at the low end of the market doesn't make the automakers all that happy. Even if they sell that kind of vehicle. In the US, many auto "Journalists" don't even own cars. They get loaners from the makers. They will continue to get loaners from the makers as long as they keep the makers happy.

I actually sort of own that. I have an Opel Agila which is just a Suzuki Wagon R+ that Opel licensed and changed basically just front grill and engine. And that Suzuki Wagon R+ I hear is based on some Kei car. It is a little bit wider and longer and has 1.0 or 1.2l engine. Mine is the 1.2 and it is a tiny rocket that takes all the stresses of narrow roads with incompetent SUV drivers on them or parking in a city and turns it into fun. I can't even cound how many times I had a bigger car behind me slam on the brakes because I comfortably went at speed through a gap they didn't want to risk or how many times several cars in front of me pass up on a possible parking spot as being too tight and I just drive into it nose first. My car is 22 years old and I have no idea what to replace it with when I eventually have to. There are no left-hand-drive Kei cars for us in Europe.

I still have no idea why the Japanese manufacturers don't import Kei vehicles into the UK officially. Our cramped congested roads and sky-high insurance costs are basically the ideal market for these cars to eat up the small car segment with their great feature for price ratio and heaps of character, versatility and variety.
It's the same story with the big vans. Alphards and Elgrands are really popular here with large families and as private taxis. They're really missing a beat by not just converting the speedo to read in MPH, adding 5-10% to their reasonable prices and then shipping them here and having them in dealerships.
Even past that, manufacturers with bases here could just make these cars locally and skip the cost/exchange rate nonsense.

I bought a 2019 Spacia hybrid AWD with just under 30,000ks on it a few weeks ago and have done almost 2000kms in it in that time.
I'm constantly surprised at just how good it is.
It's my daily. It has replaced a large 4 door sedan and a Suzuki Carry van and does as good or better than both.
I've taken it from Sydney to Gerringong NSW a couple of times and it went up steep Mount Ousley at the 80kph limit on cruise control without even trying.
My only gripes are the cruise control can only be bumped up to 107kph at most which can be fun on the 110kph freeway in the mornings, and it does move around a bit in crosswinds being a tall lightweight box.
Other than that it's actually a blast to drive and the power button actually works.
I love the way it looks, the way it drives, I just love it! 10/10 would buy again.

Yeah, especially the past few years.
Bob J had 2x choices in 175/55 R15: Either Bridgestone or Yokos, both $250 ea. Be careful not to bugger up the handling with 17"ers, - these things are engineered pretty tight. 16s will get the look if the profile is right. Imo! Anyway, go get that dream! Cheers.

A few years ago I visited the Suzuki Plaza in Hamamatsu, Japan. They had a Suzuki Spacia as a show model where you could actually sit in and even though I'm 1,9m tall, there was indeed room to spare for both my legs and head. I also really liked those electrically operated passenger sliding doors and the cargo space with the rear seats down was truly impressive.
I'm really tempted to import one of those, but since I live in the Netherlands where we drive on the right, preparing it to pass MOT might require some work as the direction of the headlight beam needs to be adjusted.

I've been to Japan a few times and rented kei cars and loved them, i even had a 4WD option when I'm Hokkaido. I'd buy one, but they are probably a bit small than I require currently. The issue with grey imports is the reluctance mechanics have with working on them. I was looking into a Delica D5 when I came across your videos, the Vellfire one made me think your workshop might be interested but the response when I enquired was you avoid them where possible. Which is fine, but it left me questioning if buying a grey import was worth the trouble. Very tempting forbidden fruit.

My wife and I have a 2022 N-Box custom turbo in Sydney and it is hands down the most practical, fun car I've ever owned. EASILY keeps up with freeway traffic due to the torque of the turbo motor and costs $45 a fill with 400KM range. We imported it ourselves with 126KM on the clock for the same (landed and complied )cost of a base model Corolla. It does seem to upset the knuckle dragging bogan tradie demographic though but that's "Straya" for you....

Here in Kuching there is a few already on the road, it very expensive considering the engine capacity and it's size... between 125K to 138K all also from grey import, I'm personally never even test drive any of these not to mention ever sat inside it and check on all the interior. Watching this video and the detail introduction and survey on this car... Again, I'm blown away. The nimble engine capability, the surprisingly spacious interior, the features and etc... no wonder the price is expensive. If I have the money, I would buy both. Why? Coz it's just cute, unique, economical, practical and very low maintenance.... Wow!

Of course there are drawbacks, at least we can try something else in life which we have only one, so take your pick. I've had a fascination with Kei cars since I was like 13 years old and read an article about them in Automobile Magazine (or Road and Track, I forget) that featured a photo of a Pajero Mini next to a full-sized Chevy Blazer, making it look laughably tiny. I envy you in Australia for being able to import these pretty much brand new because we have to wait 25 years to legally run one in the US. But that doesn't mean I haven't been perusing local classified ads for a Pajero Mini or Sambar van just for funsies. :)
