    No one will read this, but here goes. My last bike in England was a Honda firestorm, as I was getting on a bit. Ten years retired in Thailand on 125 Honda Waves, I have to accept I am not the biker I was. I have had my CB500X for two months now. Perfect for a born again biker in his 60's with dodgy roads to deal with.

      @Robbie D The CB500X 2019 sounds like a very good bike, I was trying to get one but could not, after Honda had me on the line for 3 months I took a look at the Versys X 300 form Kawasaki, got it after reading a lot and seeing a lot of on road and off road videos on it, I got a 2018 new so they gave me the engine guards and center stand ( center stand a must for chain maintenance,) I put some after market lights on and am waiting for some hard bags. The seat was very hard but after 2000 Km it is fine. I am glad that I could not get the Honda now as the Versys was over $1000,00 less and came with the center stand and engine guards, and Honda dealer charged me another $ 800. 00 on top of the price, the Kawasaki dealer only put $ 300.00 on top for shop charges. And of course they bough had GSP on them. The break in was slow on the Versys as they wanted you to stay under 4000 rvs for the first bit but after that what a blast to ride, very good off road and great in the windy back roads, and good on the highway. I have been riding for over 50 years and many bikes form 49 CC to over 1000 cc and the Versys x 300 is at the top of my list for fun bikes and I like that you can get over 450 Km on a tank of gas . Good luck with what ever you get, but you should take a look at the Versys x,

    I'm an experienced Motorcyclist of 27 years and have rode many machines and the CB500x is great fun, yes I can see where you think it's aimed at less experienced riders but you are missing the motorcyclists who actually commute day in day out not just get a toy out the garage on a sunny day or at the weekend. The CB500x is great to cut through city traffic or sitting on the motorway and the fuel consumption is better than a 125 scooter I was using to commute. I personally love the CB500x as an everyday bike that can do everything well, yes it's not the most powerful not the fastest but in the real world at legal safe speeds it does everything 's asked and I still have a smile on my face. The only thing I can fault it on is Honda's idea of switching the horn and indicators round, I apologise to all the people who I have beeped at when trying to cancel the turn signal.

    Living in the north of Thailand with some superb roads + a mix of trails/tracks I hired a CB500X with a view to buying a touring bike. I was absolutely amazed by how much fun it was. I'm an experienced rider and I also hired bigger and more powerful machines that I thought would be better tools but I couldn't fault the Honda. Easy to ride, nice buzzy sound to the engine when you on it, fast as you need through the twisties, neutral handling, just digs in and gets on with it... don't like high speed straight line stuff so its top speed never bothered me. Fun fun fun and it love gravel/dirt trails...

    I have a CB400Four which goes to 13,000 RPM as well as the NC700S. Riding the NC700 for only an hour or two is no way to judge the bike. It takes some getting used to a high torque low revving bike. Two months after I got it, I took it for a 2,000 km ride over 4 days and it was superb. The high torque makes it easy to overtake long trucks on narrow rural roads. The under square pistons means you get much better fuel consumption. The low revs makes for longevity and it has twice the service interval of my Honda CB400Four.

    They are comparing apples to oranges and don't seem to truthful in their responses as they all seem to hesitate when answering questions about the bikes. The 650 VStrom is a monster compared to the CB500x in not only weight but power. The same for the BMW which is 75 hp compared again to the CB500x at only 43/45 hp. I've been riding 40 years and have had nothing but issues with BMW bikes and even owned a 2013 F700GS - they are problem childs. I agree as to the other ones who left comments - a bike is a bike. You don't need to go out and buy the most powerful bike as your first or even the smallest. People who have 25/35 years of experience don't need a huge bike to enjoy themselves- I'll be looking into a used CB500x and adding the Ralley conversion kit!

    I had limited budget but wanted something new and reliable so after a few test rides I traded in my Fazer FZ1S for a CB500X.

    I think you are doing a double-whammy disservice to both Honda, and "New Riders." I have grown up with motorbikes, been riding for 30 years. To say that the Honda CB500X is "aimed at new riders" is both an insult to Honda, and really irresponsible. This bike is by far the most frightening/adrenaline inducing, machine I personally have ever ridden. Never in a MILLION YEARS would I recommend this to "New Riders". A CBR150 is a good bike for "New Riders." Are you actually TRYING to get those 20 year old punk kids KILLED? That being said, excellent review of the machines and much appreciated your video.

      @@ezzabay In Canada you just do a written test then ride, I think a smaller bike would be good to start on, for some people, but the 500 would be all wright for others. There are some kids out there that think nothing is going to happen to them and that type should start on a smaller bike for there own safety. To see a beginner get a bike and want to go top speed the first day scares me, and a 500 is not the bike to do this with.

  • @Smaug1
    @Smaug1 Před 7 lety +2

    I started with a 2000 SV650; great bike. I can't think of enough good things to say about that engine. I made it into a mini-tourer, but the V-Strom is better at it, with its taller top gear. The big front wheel makes it handle bad roads really well. Passenger accommodations are wonderful, as well.
    I tried a V-Strom 1000, but it's not as good: a LOT less efficient, and a lot heavier too.
    Honda has figured that they can do the same thing with a parallel twin of about the same displacement and in a more compact form factor with the NC700X. Maybe they can, but this isn't it. Everybody complains about it running out of juice early; the V-Strom doesn't. Suzuki's 645cc 90° V-twin just has power everywhere.
    One thing probably worth mentioning is that the Hondas absolutely DESTROY the competition when it comes to fuel economy, so if that is a motivating factor in the purchasing decision, they might win out despite the V-Strom being a bit more fun.
    I wouldn't even consider the BMW. Not only is the initial purchase price higher, but parts and service are higher too. To deal with that, it would have to be VASTLY better than the Jap bikes.

    Why do they always relate to 500x as a new rider bike, I have been riding for years and have bought the 500x and to be honest the bike takes everything that the British roads can throw at it . The 500x is to powerful for a new rider who has just passed their test and will definitely drop the bike hopefully not when trying to overtake. The price is great and also you can modify with extra parts making it your own.

    The NC's a very good bike that has sold well for a variety of reasons: Economy, torque, stability/handling, long service intervals, storage - and it's a lot of fun to ride. Adapting to the rev limiter's no problem after a few days and the newer 750 version has improved it even more.
    Having ridden both styles I went for the cheaper 750S as it handles better than the X and feels a lot more planted on the road - same for all adventure style bikes I suppose with their higher centre of gravity.

      +monck55 Most people dont understand you need to ride the nc700x like you drive a car. Do you rev your car to 7000rpm when cruising? NO. The nc700 engine is out of a Honda Fit/Jazz, its got great bottom end torque and in fact when I rode it, I hardly have to rev past 4000rpm. Ride it like you drive a car and suddenly it all makes sense. It doesn't buzz or vibrates, it gives better fuel economy than the cb500 and if you're a rookie rider, there's an automatic transmission option.
      That being said, I'd still pick the cb500x over the nc700x.

The v-strom 650 is a great bike but the CB 500 X better gas millage, lighter & to me looks a lot better. ( I think the beak on the v-strom should be yellow and the horn should go quack ) And I do not like where the oil filter is on the V-strom looks like it is asking to get hit. But to tell the truth I had a hard time picking between the 2 , The Honda just felt better as my feet were more firm on the ground, and my off road riding will be back roads and fire roads and a moderate speed, and the 2019 dose have a gear indicator and 19" front wheel and longer suspension .

You just have to change up sooner I have a 700x and gotta tell ya it's a mile muncher. remember NC stands for new concept you have to learn a slightly different way of riding, And if you look the 700x and cb500x have a lot of parts from the same parts bin this is now Honda have managed to get the prices right down on these bikes. I like the 700 X but for having to lift the seat to fill up with gas, and the tank is too small, the 500 x gets more miles per tank. If the 700 x came with a larger gas tank and easy access to it I might of got it . Plus a 19" front wheel would be nice. When going on long tours I will have some things on the back seat and do not have to remove them to get gas. I wanted the CB 500 X 2019 but could not get one in Canada even so they said I could Honda right hand dose not what there left hand is doing hear in Canada. ended up getting a Versys X 300 and love it, comes with 19" front spocked wheels, rear rack, and the 2018 you get the center stand and engine guard. For me the only draw back in the high rev engine but I should get use to it over time. And getting better gas millage than is stated so very good so far.

    There is one essential difference between the NC series (NC750S/X/D) and this CB500X. I'm not talking about the tilted and interesting twin engine. Neither about the fake tank or something alike.
    NC is built in Japan, while CB is assembled in Taiwan. If you search the net a bit you will find that it has reliability issues. In the same time the NC-s already start to built a good reputation for reliability. And I can still confirm that after 2 years ride on a NC750S. The fuel efficiency of the NC-s is incredible and they are also great starter bikes even though much heavier than the CB500. The price difference is very low. I see no reason to chose CB500 instead of NC750 except that it is few hundred EUR cheaper...

    First bike should not be a brand new bike, you will likely drop it and treat it badly whilst you're learning. For your first bike you want something you are happy to bash about on for 6-12 months then go for what you are really after. Save the pain of loosing lots of cash strait up and chewing through two bikes within a year. Sell the little 250 or whatever low powered first bike you choose for only marginally less than you paid a year later then get your dream bike.

    I have an NC700X ABS, and I agree with you. But you forgot that the bike was built for fuel consumption efficiency. This bike makes 3.2l/100km easy. Yes, wont do 200km/h but is the perfect city commuter. And the fake fuel tank, is very handy... But will never be a performance bike in any way. And much cheaper then the V-Strom...

  • @norsefalconer

    Not particular toward this review, but toward almost every motorcycle review I've read and watched, where is the cost of ownership and maintenance schedule stuff? A bike may be cheaper up front, but if, for example, valve adjustments are difficult and/or frequent, the costs of which will close the gap between it and a more expensive bike (not requiring that sort of attention by a professional) pretty quickly.

  • @dbauernf

  • @Purple_Pixel
    @Purple_Pixel Před 11 lety +1

    You left out the Versys 650. Also the review of the NC700 was a bit unfair as it is designed to shift differently. Unlike the other bikes it produces power from just off idle but needs to be shifted much earlier.

  • @JoeGP
    @JoeGP Před 11 lety +1

    did they ride the dual-clutch/automatic NC700X or the manual one ?
    for a new rider not having to worry about shifting would be a huge asset.
    The automatic version in standard mode also does almost 80MPG, i'm pretty sure even the little 500cc can't match that.
    under-revving and killing the engine or over-revving and having the bike jump (and maybe fly into a fence) scares a lot of people from getting a bike, i've seen enough youtube videos on that

    .
    I mean the NC700 doesn't have much going for it besides torque..BUT, that being said, for a daily I"m sure it's a great bike. May not put a smile on your face every time you ride it, but if you're just using it to commute or w.e you may not give a crap! :)

      I would say somewhere in between the V-Strom and CB500X. The V-Strom is a comfy adventure bike for taller riders with an awesome engine, where the CB500X is a good allrounder for medium-sized riders and women (the bike is lighter and not that high and long). The Versys is like the chassis of the CB500X with the engine of the V-Strom: sporty allrounder. It depends on the purposes for the bike you have: fun riding on weekends? Long journeys? Filtering traffic? Commuting on long distances? Just ride them and make your own decision.

    It's no-brainer here in Thailand to get CB500X over NC700X since the price of NC is doubled over the price of CB500X you can actually get CBR500R and CB500X here and you still a $1000 away from NC700X price!

  • @1991ryanl

    there's always this tone that anything under 1000cc is a beginner bike, or a 'baby bike' (ive not seen a review of the g310gs that doesnt call it a "baby GS"), or for small riders; and could only be considered if you dont have the skill to ride a bigger bike; but I feel that just because a big BMW 1250gs is more challenging to ride, it doesnt mean it's better choice, or means that the owner is a better rider (although that is often true; the increase in skill translates to equal performance in various situations).
    I think that for anyone who wants to have fun; keep up with traffic on a motorway; wants good fuel efficiency; and doesnt want to break the law; and wishes to be able to pick their own bike up if it falls (all very sensible, practical and mature qualities to desire), AND doesnt let their ego drive their decision: then I cant see any reason to own a bike bigger than 800cc. I wish there were more 500cc options with larger frames! its as if manufacturers assume that height and size translate to desire to go faster. e.g. which are most 125's tiny? fully grown men and women still need to ride them... I looked like a clown on stilts trying to ride mine and im only 6ft2.
    I guess the whole SUV craze in the UK is the same thing... everyone wants to have the biggest presence on the road, yet it practically makes little difference in the way they are used.
    Apologies for my ranticles.

    What's all the hype over gear position indicators? Back in the day, there were no such things and I never had a problem with knowing which gear I Was in.
    Its just something else to distract you from watching what's going on in front of you and all new riders need to concentrate on that rather than constantly looking down at the dash to see which gear they are in!
    If your bike doesn't pull when you open the throttle, you are in the wrong gear, so just drop down one! You don't need an indicator to tell you to do that as it works in every gear! (Unless you're already in 1st, then even a gear indicator wont help you out of that one!)

    • @larryj8924
      @larryj8924 Před 6 lety

      Agree, gear indicators are for novices, anyone who gets to know their bike well can ride it without an indicator. More electronics drive the cost up and potentially increase maintenance cost.

Also about the Honda NC 700, i think its one of the most interesting motorcycles that should replace the Honda Deauville 700 but i just dont understand why they didnt put a shaft drive on it.. Its a low revving torquey machine that want to last long time making lots of miles at a good cruising speed with great fuel economy thats the point of the bike i guess its not that hard to see..
