  • Lots of different folks swing a leg over the new Rally Raid CB500X Adventure as we compare it to the stock bike. Just two inches taller overall, but a world of off road performance capability.
    The expression from grizzled veteran racer Jim Barber is priceless.
    "The bike Honda should have built"
    Here's where to get YOUR kit from Rally Raid.

    What a difference the Rally Raid kit makes, it's as good as a KTM adventure at probably twice the price. I love my CB500X, but being a short ass, can't see myself doing this mod. It looks way better than that Strom. I thought the old guy was going to throw a leg over, he was tempted.

    • @blancolirio
      @blancolirio  Před 9 lety +2

      Consider the Rally Raid Stage 1 suspension kit...should make a world of difference and keep the stock height.

    • @crackerworld
      @crackerworld Před 8 lety +1

      +IRISHROVER I was thinking about the same about the old guy but unfortunately he didn't. I won a CB500X in a national honda contest from the honda official dealer so I love my free cb500x hahahahha. Moved from a ninja 250r which is a great upgrade. Being 1.80 does help although it's not the same as it was with the ninja, I still feel a bit high in the sky and this is not very good for balance.
      I mean if I have a passenger and it's a hill and I need to stop and he/she moves weirdly ..well it's hard compared to the ninja, also ninja was 169kg this one is 195kg (XA version with the ABS in both tires). So it's easier to lose balance if you're not carefull compared to other bikes that weight 150-170kg, at 195kg and higher seat place it's harder but still all better overall.
      Now when I need to use emergency brakes I don't have to "think" how much pressure to put as I did with the ninja, there I had to press the back brake all the way and the front JUST enough before locking the wheel - With cb500x? ...press them BOTH fully!! with no worries(with the ninja I had to balance half the bike with my body because when locking the back wheel you lose control of the rear tyre so you use ur body to move it where you want it to be)

Just went out of my bikes a few years ago, I had a KLR650, WR250, and a Goldwing all insured at the same time so I could choose which one I wanted for the day, lol. Sold them all after one too many near misses with car drivers not paying attention. I'd be lying if I said I didn't miss them though...

    I wish the basics of the rally raid kit were stock on the cbx. Buying new, the cbx costs more than the cbf and cbr, but it doesn't really do much better off-road, at least not enough to really justify the bigger price. I wish they'd given it the spoked wheels and sturdy tires as standard, as well as longer suspension travel. Then possibly tried to shave off some weight as well, and it would be a propper mini Africa Twin for people with lower budget and more civillian needs in terms of raw endurance performance. This stage 3 kit is really awesome, and completely changes the nature of the bike to the better! awesome vid yet again :)

    I'm looking to buy the 2019 cb500x. I'll probably select the stage 2 spoked 19 inch front wheel, ..not sure what else yet. I'm I'll see how the I fit on the bike before deciding on further possible-height-altering upgrades.

    I saw Sierra Motorsports has a 2018 CB500X still for sale. I would be interested for sure but it might be tough to get the wheels from Rally Raid right now due to the pandemic. I noticed on their website they stated that they "REQUIRE BUILDING AND SENDING TO ITALY" and take 4-6 weeks. Might be 4-6 months now, I will have to contact them and see. I noticed the new 2019+ cb500X have the larger 19" wheel now but it is still a cast wheel that would be inferior to the rim and spoke Rally Raid.

    I'm a senior and would be considered a new rider. Only other bike I've owned was a new 1977 Suzuki 750, but only kept it about a year. I'm also an avid mountain hiker, but with all the hiking and climbing I've done, my knees were really talking to me during last year's hiking season. If I have to give up hiking, I'm thinking an ADV bike would be a good way for me to still experience at least some backcountry adventures.
    I have become really interested in the 2019 CB500X, along with the RR kit, because I would want something that would work for 50/50 riding.
    However, I am only 5' 5", with an inseam of 30 inches (31 inches with hiking boots), so you have an inch on me in both height and inseam. On top of that, I'm a light-weight; might top out at 130 soaking wet. Since you can barely get your toes on the ground, I'm guessing I couldn't even touch the ground.
    With the additional weight of three days of water and camping gear, that might bring the seat height down enough to where it was manageable, but I'm not really certain. On asphalt, seat height wouldn't be a real problem, but off-road, with all that gear, I'm thinking that not being able to get my feet solidly on the ground, even though I wouldn't be an aggressive rider, might be a bit dicey/dangerous, especially since I would almost always be riding solo.
    If/When you have time, I'd like your (or anyone's) opinion as to whether I should cross this bike off my list of possibilities. Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of other options for someone my size.
    BTW, thanks for taking the time to post all your videos. They have been very informative.

    Buy a bike that’s not designed for hardcore off roading, put a ton of money into it to make it off road capable or just buy a bike that’s capable from the start. This bike is for riders that want small displacement and the upright ergonomics of an ADV style bike. It’s great for dirt and gravel in its stock form. If I was going to seriously off road I’d just get the Tenere 700. If I really wanted a Honda and I wanted it off road ready, I’d go with an Africa Twin... which I have.

      blancolirio I saw a video of a guy who did the MABDR on a Honda Super Cub. I’ve seen guys ride Harley Dynas like they are Moto GP bikes. You can accomplish any task with just about any motorcycle. That doesn’t mean that’s what it was designed to do. The 500x is a very capable motorcycle. I’m getting one for my son to learn on because it’s predictable power and it will fit his 6’3” height. However, I wouldn’t put him on a stock 500x and expect him to run the Dakar.

    Ya know what Honda ( or an INTELLIGENT third part company partnered with Honda) should do? Create a height ADJUSTABLE system of the suspension ( kinda like airbag suspension on cars and semi trucks) in which you could ensure it's lowered down ( which would be at least 3 inches lower than the stock suspension) and raise it up as high as 3 inches above stock AS you're going down the road with a tapping of an up button on a tiny remote mounted on the left handle bar area.
    Seriously..this would be VERY game changing for me. And make it to where it lowers from the max height to the lowest height in around 3 or 4 seconds. Also programmable to auto lower if the bike senses a hard sudden stop from more than 20 or 25mph.
    What do ya think? I call dibs on the idea. I'll accept a 5% royalty for the idea.

    Having owned (and sold) a V-Strom DL650 Adventure, this conversion looks really interesting. The V-Strom is too wide and heavy for serious dual sport riding - although I did ride the eastern (easy) half of the Trans-America Trail on it. A sweet, Honda 500cc twin would make a super-economical bike for adventure riding for most people. That is, most people who don't need a motocross bike.

    This is a great alternative to the pricey ktm adventure. Hey I want your opinion. I currently own a 2001 XR650R that has been great but I'm looking to sell it then diversify a little. There are two bikes I have had my eye on this CB500X with rally raid and the KTM 690 Enduro. Could you give me a little insight on some of the pros and cons of each of the bikes?

    Wish Honda would make an adventure version of this motocycle, staraight from the factory!

    • @ylism
      @ylism Před 9 lety +1

      +lagaman11 Yes it would be nice. But If you was to add the cost up new it would cost, seeing the stock price is as of " 2015
      CB500X STARTING AT $6,299*+ DESTINATION CHARGE: $320.00 " and when using the same parts, it would be close to $9,000.00 or more likely more, that's without ABS too.
      That is with weaker forks, then say a V-strom 650 with 43mm forks - verses 41mm used on the Cb500x, or the Versys 650 witch has as standard inverted forks that are even stronger ones then the Dl's.
      The DL650 used for comparison is a new different looking bike that cost more, there is an adventure package DL650 and it comes with hard cases & crash bars panyards like the one shown, but the fairings are different and so are the wheels.
      Let's not forget a big issue the 20+HP min maybe more for both the DL650 & versys 650 ? Note # Check advertized numbers and dyno for these.
      Then there is the extra weight to think about, because this kit adds a good amount of weight over the stock 430 Lbs CB500x with a 471cc motor. BTW in one of the videos the weights are shown for some parts like the new rims, not sure witch one ? ? ?
      It would be nice to have a certified weight of this kit as is, full of fluids, to clear this up, not just guessing numbers.
      Yes it would be nice at the current stock price, it just could not be that way from the factory, we have to be realistic, because the factory would have compromises in the parts used to be able to sell it's bikes, and it still would cost that or more ? Maybe..
      People have already said in reviews, the bike is not that special in performance with it's dyno rating of 42+ Hp, then you must add the extra weight, they would most likely say it's underpowered, even more so like this, unless they only rode 250cc sized bikes.
      Something to think about ?
      Thats my 2 cents worth of thoughts, but it's nice to dream !

      I looked for that, glad to find it's weight is lower than I thought. 450 is not the worst I've seen, in fact I have a Kaw en500ltd that is a little more, but does have a larger motor @ 498cc with a little more power, and It does just fine last time I rode it, it needs a new chain set ect, or it would be in use someplace ? I am sure others wanted that info other than me, being a specs nut, or just a nut.Thanks for the info. yl

    Tip toe does not work for off road riding. Riders need to be able to plant a full foot on the ground.
