7:32 Which Webby jokingly called out in Season One. "It's a trap!"
8:02 That's actually weird/surprising considering they also established that Scrooge LOVES Game Night and is just as competitive playing board games as he is going on adventures. These types of games really shouldn't be any different and it proves so in the episode. I just found it weird Scrooge wasn't initially into it or Webby didn't realize how obsessed he would get when he did get into it, despite her knowing about Game Night.
12:37 I pray to the GODS this film never happens.
20:16 What's interesting about this scene though is that when they electrocute Steelbeak, you can see his skull is fractured. It's possible he wasn't always dumb, but suffered head trauma in his past. I wonder if this will be explained in a future flashback?

    • @ConsoleWarriors
      @ConsoleWarriors Před 4 lety +27

Well the game they were referring to was an adventure game that wasn't really competitive. It's more that Scrooge doesn't see the need for artificial adventures when, given who he is, he has access to real adventures that challenge him. Escapism isn't something he needs.

    • @thedorkknight9684
      @thedorkknight9684 Před 4 lety +11

That's actually a good point about Steelbeak. I just brushed it off as comedy. It's entirely plausible that he was in some sort of accident, potentially even the reason he has his namesake Steel Beak. Black heron mentioned that she broke him out of a St. Canard prison, but i don't think they said why he was in there. I can easily see him causing some sort of crime and being in an accident, then Black Heron was sent to recruit him. He agreed, and F.O.W.L gave him surgery that replaced his beak. That was a potentially important detail, great eye!

I kinda like the whole "Batman Year One" angle they have going on with Darkwing Duck and Steelbeak. Steelbeak is essentially a rookie agent in FOWL and hasn't quite grown into his criminal mastermind/Chief Agent status just yet. The same way Drake Mallard is just starting his superhero career as Darkwing Duck, and hasn't quite gained the fame/reputation as a crimefighter just yet. I'm hoping to see them both grow into their respective roles by the end of the season. Or at least by the time a genuine Darkwing Duck spin-off is ready.

You ever realize that the main villains have similar personality traits for the main triplet of that season? Magica was impulsive, the second she gets out of the dime, she takes over Duckburg, not even trying to make a plan. Lunaris was conniving. He had every aspect of the invasion planned out for years, and adjusted accordingly. He knew what everyone would do before they even knew he existed. And his foil was surprises. That Glomgold helped stop him, that Mitsy showed up with the kids, that Penumbra showed up at the last minute to stop him, all without any warning. Now Huey is the main triplet and in this episode, we saw Bradford solve a rubix cube in less than a minute. I figure at some point, it'll reveal him and the other FOWL High Command to have been Junior Woodchucks at one point or another.

I'm on a similar wave length with you about how the ray affected Launchpad. My headcanon is that it didn't make him smarter, but improved his memory. With all the adventures he's had with Scrooge McDuck, the wealth of knowledge he must have in hos head should be amazing. The ray didn't add to that knowledge (which would be him getting smarter) but instead unlocked what he already knew, allowing him to fully act on it. The ending I think conforms this, as when he goes back to 'normal', he can't remember the FOWL plot, even though part of his brain still has that knowledge, and tries to get it out to Scrooge. If he had been made dumber, he would have lost the knowledge altogether. He didn't, he just lost the ability to access it.

  • @tommihorttana860

I think this is pretty much the best "intelliray" episode I've seen in television, exactly because it's so straightforward in how it handles intelligence. There's no twist: He wasn't smart all along, and being smart didn't make him into an asshole or someone arrogant or unwise. Intelligence is a real thing (even if it's more complex than a single measure like IQ), less intelligent people exist (it's not just about confidence or distractions), and it can be hard sometimes. Yet it's not all that matters: Launchpad is good enough as he is and whatever *other* strengths he has allow him to "survive being that stupid" as he puts it. He's kind and has a generally good attitude, and he almost initially beat up Steelbeak by muscle alone.

    • @adde9506

Agreed. Telling children that their... shortcomings isn't the word I want but we'll go with it... are not real (pretending that some people aren't dumb or ugly or whathaveyou) and that they should expect the same results as people who don't have them is just damaging. Should you be treated badly because you're dumb or ugly: No. Should you expect to become the next Bill Gates/James Bond: also No. Are you capable of doing something unique or difficult, like becoming a pilot: Yes. Children won't get to grow up to be anything they want; that isn't how the world works, and not just because some kids want to be the plane instead of the pilot. A kid with severe dyslexia shouldn't be encouraged to become an author, maybe should be encouraged not to go to college (especially since it's such a racket). You can become a millionaire working at McDonalds, you're results aren't necessarily limited just because you're options aren't as wide open as someone else's. The best thing about this show is that Launchpad is mostly incompetent, but they still treat him well, because he's a good person. At the same time, Glomgold, who is also incompetent, is treated hostilely because he's a Bad Person.

I loved this episode. Like, I really, really loved it. The jokes were (once again) on point, the plot with FOWL and Steelbeak was great, and, of course, Smart Launchpad and the Rescue Ranger's cameos! The idea that Launchpad was the first person to discover FOWL's return, yet was unable to successfully warn Scrooge because his intelligence, represented through the Smart Launchpad persona, is trapped within regular Launchpad's more... simple mind is really intriguing. I kinda hope we see Launchpad's intelligence return somehow, because having Launchpad of all characters being a major player in the FOWL story-line would be REALLY fun. The fact that Smart Launchpad seemingly already knew about FOWL is curious, though - is this merely an effect of the Third Eye Diamond's ray, or was FOWL still a present threat after Della got sent into space, thus meaning that Launchpad has seen FOWL in action at some point? It would explain why the only character Scrooge allowed on his trip to save Agent 27 (not counting Webby, who was a stowaway) - for the longest time I'd just marked that up to Launchpad being Scrooge's chauffeur, but now I'm thinking it's because Launchpad already knew about FOWL and the dangers it brings. After all, if it was such a private mission that Scrooge didn't even bother fishing Donald out of the pantry as back-up, why did he allow LAUNCHPAD of all people to pilot the submarine? Surely Donald (a sailor) or even Scrooge himself would be better off piloting the sub on such an important mission?
Steelbeak in this reboot is a treat. He's the perfect counterpart to Launchpad, having the same level intellect but a more sinister personality setting them against each other. Whilst I do prefer his more cunning Darkwing Duck counterpart, and was honestly expecting to see this version of Steelbeak to use the intelli-ray on himself to make him more like his original counterpart, the idea that this Steelbeak is more of a beginner at the evil game, serving as the Muscle for other FOWL members (such as Black Heron) is still interesting enough for me to want to see THIS Steelbeak get developed more. The idea that he wants to be an equal to members such as Heron and can create schemes that are genuinely (almost cartoonishly) evil proves that he is still a threat, and I can see him being used by The High Command to create distractions for Scrooge and Co if they get too close to uncovering FOWL's plot.
The Rescue Rangers were implemented really well in this episode as well. They were only in it for a few scenes, but served as a perfect example for how the Intelli-Ray works, and their new origin also explains why the Rescue Rangers are more realistic rodents rather than large, anthropomorphic ones (which presumably inhabit Mouseton). The scene near the end where they contribute towards Launchpad's defeat was pure joy, serving not only as well-done fanservice for fans of the Rescue Rangers, but also as a way to set up the idea that the RR exist in this world helping to solve crimes, just in case the DuckTales team are ever allowed to use them again. Personally I hope that the RR end up camping out in Donald's houseboat, purely so we can see moments of Donald vs Chip and Dale, akin to the classic shorts.
The episode's end was also fantastic. Launchpad sacrificing his intelligence (or his confidence, I also like that idea) to help save Dewey and Duckburg helps to show just how good and selfless a character Launchpad is, which is something I'd love to see expanded upon when he teams up with Darkwing in later episodes. The fact that he was SO CLOSE to revealing FOWL's return to Scrooge but simply lost his train of thought and forgot was infuriating in the best possible way - I wonder if this is the only time such a thing will happen this season, or if we'll see Scrooge come close to learning the truth only for something to prevent that more often, as a way to showcase just how important this secrecy is for FOWL? Speaking of FOWL, I'm glad the end states nice and cleanly that FOWL won't be the same style villain as Lunaris or even Magica DeSpell - whilst these two definitely involved a lot of secrecy in their plans, all that went out of the window the moment they got the upper hand, which served as a key player in their downfall - had Magica NOT driven a swirling vortex of pure evil through Duckburg and destroyed the Money Bin, it's likely that the Duck family would never have discovered her return and Scrooge would've been trapped in the dime forever, and if Lunaris hadn't had advertised every bit of his plan as soon as Scrooge seemed defeated it's likely that Glomgold wouldn't have been able to out-stupid it - or, at least not in time. In contrast, it seems that FOWL is going to remain in the shadows until Scrooge and Co uncover them themselves (which will likely only happen after everything has been stolen under Scrooge's... nose? Beak?), whist members such as Steelbeak (and maybe the Phantom Blot) can still provide obvious threats to distract Scrooge, not disclosing the fact they're part of a greater organisation at the time. Providing Scrooge with another intellectual threat, that will likely not be countered with another plan from Glomgold, means that Scrooge will fully be able to prove why he's the Smartest of the Smarties whilst also managing to find a way to tie in the Treasure-Hunting adventures to the greater plot through Finch's journal and FOWL's larceny and I am all for that.

I agree 100% about Steelbeak being the perfect antagonist for Launchpad. I have my own theory about season 3, and how i think F.O.W.L is planning on taking out the duck family. Belive it or not, it's my theory that they're using a strategy similar to one of Glomgold's past schemes. If you recall, in "Glom-Tales!" Glomgold tries to find a perfect match for each individual duck. His biggest fault, as far as i can tell, is that he based it on the roles each character usually played. For example, he recruited Don Carnage because he thought the best advirsary for launch pad was another pilot. It wasn't the plan, but the way he executed it. The best opponents aren't based on physical abilities, but rather what they represent. Steelbeak acts as a sort of dark relection to launchpad, and in my opinion, That's what makes for the best villains. If Glomgold had gone the route of the dark reflection, he might've actually succeeded. And it's my theory that the Dark reflection is exactly what F.O.W.L has in mind. I think the line-up should be something like:
      Steelbeak vs Launchpad
      Gandra Dee vs Fenton
      Black Heron vs Beakly
Gyro vs the guy from Astro B.O.Y.D (forgot his name, oops)
Taurus Bulba vs Darkwing Duck (he's not in the show just yet, but he'll likely be introduced in the big Hour Long DW spotlight episode. We're also getting Gosalyn from that, so that's a nice bonus. Although, Jim Starling/Nega-Duck could also be the perfect enemy for him if we see him again.)
Fowl is a force to fear, and when the time comes to face them, it'll be one heck of a fight.

I was really glad to finally see what Frank and co. had in mind when they announced their own take on the original show's 'Double-O Duck' episode. As per usual with this show, it was entertaining, creative, and gave more insight on the characters. Launchpad was delightful with his suave agent persona, and Scrooge going insane with the Skee-Ball set was amusing. I wonder how FOWL will actually steal the world.
Admittedly though, I was conflicted with how they made Steelbeak less intelligent than his portrayal in DWD; but at least he still pulled off some impressive moves, like when he got the upper hand on Black Heron and snatched her Intelli-ray, and when he fought against Launchpad. Plus, they briefly showed that he has a crack in his skull, which may imply that he used to be smarter than he is now. With that aside, his new voice actor did a great job in his performance, and I love that he did his own take on Steelbeak's chuckle. Also, I can't fully explain why, but I just love how huge his metal beak is.
And of course, I was excited when they brought in the Rescue Rangers. Next to how they handled Darkwing Duck, this has to be favorite take on a classic Disney Afternoon series. It was very creative making them lab animals with enhanced intelligence, and I loved it whenever they played that show's instrumental theme music. As for that live-action movie Disney's been planning, I really hope they won't go through with it. Besides, didn't Disney already make a similar movie years ago (G-Force), and that didn't do well?

The situation of the Rescue Rangers kinda reminds of two Spiderman villains: Electro & Sandman, who were banned to appear in the 1994 animated series because of the movie adaptation by James Cameron that was in production at the time. But when it was official cancelled, the former appeared in the final season, but with a different origin and identity.

You make some good points about how this episode explains how The Rescue Rangers became intelligent. In the original, and in most Disney cartoons, you just accepted that talking animals existed in the human world with no logical explanation. Also, in the classic Donald Duck cartoons, Chip & Dale would just squabble. Barely making any coherent sentences. Eventually, they would speak more words, but you just accepted that they could talk with no explanation. Also, I'm kinda glad to see The Rescue Rangers in this episode instead of that 'live action' movie that was gonna be made, but could still happen sadly.

I assume the Ducktales writers are differentiating between knowledgeable and intelligent. The ray didn't send information into Launchpad's head, he knew all the things he knew before. But it increased his ability to process information, deduce conclusions from this information, and, as a result of understanding the world better, became more confident in whether or not he was right.

Launchpad truly sacrificing himself is among the most beautiful and tender moments of the series, and he and his friendship with Dewey is among the best parts of it as well. • @mightyfilm

I have the feeling that the Rescue Rangers cameo would have hit harder had they not spoiled the crap out of it at last year's ComicCon reveal. You know, like how we weren't expecting Mickey Coconut in the season 2 finale. But they showed the Rescue Ranger concept art, and now we were expecting them to show up, and out fan-fic-y little minds were thinking of ways they'd be used.
The first time I saw this episode, I was on the fence about how Steelbeak wasn't the suave, arrogant jerk he was in Darkwing Duck, but I felt that this series is the rise of Darkwing Duck characters. So Steelbeak was an arrogant jerk, the smoothness comes later. But the thing that sold it was the "Don't call me stupid" bit. There's PAIN in his delivery a couple times that elevates the tone from the obvious "Why you call Grimlock stupid? Grimlock not stupid," to the more implied "I've been called stupid my entire life, and no one took me seriously. Years of rejection twisted me, and now you're going to pay for it." Also, it's the same guy that does the voice of the weird magician kid from Big Mouth, right? I can never get his last name correct. Jason something? Sounded like him, but I didn't realize that until the second watch through. I saw it live, so the end credits were microscopic.

What would have been interesting to see is that the “smart ray” never even hit launchpad- he just thought it did and started to act this way. His “dumb” side would have still shown through hinting that launchpad was still himself all along- and that when Dewey was in danger and maybe thought he was hit by it went into this secret agent mode. And his British accent could have been him trying to intemidate Mrs. Beakly. I don’t know that would have been more interesting or that he was a spy spying on the mcduck family all along and that his launchpad persona was his true personality.

I think you are still pretty well-voiced even unscripted! I love these reactions/recaps/reviews of Ducktales episodes. Your format partially inspired my own for a video I did on the episode Astro B.O.Y.D.
I actually quite liked this episode and it's one of my favorites of the third season so far. The part where Launchpad admits that he just wants to be good enough for Dewey, and Dewey assures him that he has nothing to prove, was really emotional for me, and I think it wouldn't have worked if the intelli-ray hadn't done anything to Launchpad. But that is a cool analysis that I hadn't thought of that the intelli-ray didn't necessarily make Launchpad smarter, it just made him have more focus and confidence. I like Launchpad a lot, and I think he's much more than your trope-y "dumb" character, and I thought that this episode highlighted those misunderstood parts of Launchpad really well.
I've noticed throughout watching all of your Ducktales episodes that we have different opinions on some episodes though, so it might just be a matter of taste. Either way, I thoroughly enjoy these videos and you always bring up new things that I didn't know or think about! Keep it up! I'll be watching!

I personally don't care, he's a new version and a great foil for Launchpad in how he handled his insecurities. Also Frank confirmed on Tumblr that they plan to make Steelbeak grow more competent over time.
Also, I'm gonna miss the scripted version, but this was good! It would be nice to return to the old format for something like the Astro-BOYD episode though, as it would double as a good "Rebooting Gyro Gearloose" video.
