Is Canada prepared for a major earthquake? Experts say yes - but more can be done

  • As one of the world's most seismically active countries, Japan is known for its ability to be prepared for earthquakes like the magnitude 7.6 that hit on New Year's Day.
But what if a major earthquake like that one happened in Canada - or if a bigger one like the magnitude 9.0 that struck that same island in 2011 hit here?
As Sean Previl reports, seismologists, engineers and geologists say Canada is ready but there is still more that can be done.

I lived in Japan for eight years teaching English. Earthquakes are very common there. We would have an earthquake every three or four months. People are used to it over there. Everyone just stops what they're doing and waits for the earthquake to stop. Then, they carry on with their business as if nothing happened. Most earthquakes in Japan usually only last about ten to fifteen seconds.

High-density residential buildings and narrow streets do not affect the severity or rescue efforts of an earthquake. It is more of a matter of having earthquake-resistant building codes. Otherwise, you could argue that the whole of Tokyo, which has extremely high density and very narrow streets, should/would have completely collapsed during this quake or the one in 2011, but it did not. In fact, because they are newer, the residential towers in Victoria are likely more resistant to earthquakes than older single-family homes. As noted, the region in Japan worse affected are places where the building codes are not up to date.

Our hospitals are stretched to breaking point now: We don't have the medical staff. We still allow critical infrastructure to be built near sea level, on fill and on delta lands. These can be expected to liquify under a level 9 or even 8 quake. Our bridges will be out. Why anyone would chose to live in the lower mainland is beyond me.

Is this a lifetime academic desk job credential expert? Toronto needed a military response for a snow storm where they literally shovelled seniors walkways and the infrastructure resources have never improved. Remember the Quebec ice storm?? Hospitals on the brink of collapse during flu season alone, absent of any disaster. Record numbers of Hospital staffing in various jurisdictions on the brink of quitting. Numerous federal government institutions failing at almost every opportunity. Military staffing at dangerously low levels struggling to recruit while the government obsesses and prioritizes pronouns over knowledge, skills, and ability. If people in Canada truly knew how vulnerable they are due to incompetence, not to mention the security threat from organized criminals, terrorists and the like, people would vomit. Canada has never been so not ready for any major event and not all but a lot of this is the Trudeau Governments doing.

We are absolutely not ready. The forest fires had the Govt scrambling and it was ridiculous this summer with the forest fires when they had the summer previous to learn and prepare. They were a nightmare to work with, both for evacuees and hotels. They better have their stupid ducks in a row this summer when it probably happens again.

I've lived 55 years in the prairie provinces of Canada. Never once feared, or even talked about, an Earthquake. We did, however, learn to take cover under our desks at school should a nuclear war break out. Seemed as silly back then as it does now but that's what we feared. Not earthquakes. I think the prairie provinces biggest fear would be freezing to death. Maybe worry about a tornado here and there in summer but we usually get enough warning. Could die of a tumbleweed attack in Manitoba. But earthquakes? If it happened we'd be doomed because nobody here is even remotely prepared for something we have never experienced or even thought could happen here. Good luck BC!! Stay on your side of the mountains! lol (kidding....geez!)

I'm super prepared, I live in the Okanagan so I really only need rubber soled shoes to deal with the shocks. Otherwise, I'm also super prepared to take full advantage of all the carnage and opportunity to make a killing by having skills and being available to help. That's just being a good neighbor, right?

  • @fabienneisore7831

BC maybe, everyone else, no so much. If a quake flattened Ottawa, all resources are centralized there for federal government. Not much of a business continuity plan. A 72hr kit wont do much with a 9.0 quake, and a cross country one even less. Canada needs a civil defence program again, better level of preparedness.

Is Canada prepared for an earthquake? The government, in its limited role of responsibility might be - but as for nearly 90% of the general public - "absolutely not" NOT EVEN CLOSE! You think a little toilet paper panic was an issue, just imagine an everything panic where the event occurred. The full release of Cascadia Subduction zone will cause far more devastation than seen recently in the quake prone ares of the Mediterranean.
