Global National: July 7, 2024 | France’s national election delivers surprising result

  • In tonight's top story, a rather surprising result in France’s national election. After two rounds of voting over the past two weekends, a new left-wing coalition appears to have come out on top. After triggering this race last month following an embarrassing showing at the EU elections, Emmanuel Macron has seemingly staved off what was believed to be his biggest challenger. Marine Le Pen and her right-wing populist national rally party may have actually fallen to third in the polls, something many didn’t expect going into today with some predictions having them win it all.
The potentially dangerous heatwave in Western Canada is only going to get worse in the coming days with Environment Canada issuing more warnings on Sunday evening. And with heat there is often fire. Dan Spector has more on the weather picture which is especially bad south of the border.
A four-person crew re-emerged on Saturday at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, Tex., to applause, after staying in a simulated Mars habitat to study and conduct experiments for about one year. The team of Kelly Haston, Anca Selariu, Ross Brockwell, and Nathan Jones entered their 3D-printed habitat on June 25, 2023, as part of the first Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog (CHAPEA) mission. Retired Canadian astronaut Col. Chris Hadfield joined Antony Robart to discuss the mission and other space-related topics.
The instability of Europe, a more-assertive China and the prospect of another Donald Trump presidency are lending special importance to this year’s annual summit of NATO leaders in Washington. The military alliance - which considers an attack on one of its members as an attack on all - is celebrating its 75th anniversary this month. But as David Akin tells us, the growing gap between Western powers, including Canada, and those on the Eastern flank is creating a lot of anxiety about the future of the alliance.
Plus, barriers are being broken in the Canadian Football League this year through a special initiatives aimed at getting women involved on the sidelines. Jay Janower brings us the story of one woman already creating an impact on one of the league’s best teams.

"Voter data expert hired by Trump campaign says 2020 election was not stolen. Ken Block, whom the Trump campaign hired in 2020 to find voter fraud in the election, penned an op-ed Tuesday stating unequivocally that the 2020 presidential election was not stolen and that there was no evidence of voter fraud sufficient to change the outcome of the election. "I am the expert who was hired by the Trump campaign,” Block wrote.
Block, who owns Simpatico Software Systems, said his company’s findings were communicated directly to then-White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, and transcripts of depositions taken by the Jan. 6 select committee investigating the attack on the Capitol “show that the campaign found no evidence of voter fraud sufficient to change the outcome of any election.” The Hill

It's not necessary to believe everything that climate change activists say because they tend to exaggerate in the same way that climate change deniers do.
